Abstract:Carbon nanotube fibers (CNTFs) are widely utilized in flexible and wearable electronics due to their outstanding electrical and mechanical properties. However, the spinning process of CNTFs has limited the CNTs from exposure, leading to an ultralow usage efficiency of individual CNTs. Here, we propose an electrochemical expansion strategy of a single CNTF at the liquid-air interface, forming a macroscopic spindle-shaped CNTF (SS-CNTF) with an enlarged volume of up to 5000-fold upon the spindle. The obtained spindle-shaped structure endows CNTF with a high specific surface area together with excellent conductivity and good mechanical properties. Therefore, the SS-CNTF-based devices exhibit outstanding performances both in energy storage (electrical double-layer supercapacitor, energy density: 11.22 Wh kg-1, power density: 203.9 kW kg-1) and electrochemical sensing (ascorbic acid: 1.26 μA μM-1 cm-2; dopamine: 103.91 μA μM-1 cm-2; uric acid: 11.53 μA μM-1 cm-2). The novel architecture of SS-CNTF prepared by one-step electrochemical expansion at the liquid-air interface enabled its high performance in multiple applications, providing new insight into the development of CNTF-based devices.
High Performance Electrochemical Capacitors from Aligned Carbon Nanotube Electrodes and Ionic Liquid Electrolytes

Abstract:We report a new class of electrochemical capacitors by utilizing vertically aligned carbon nanotubes as the electrodes and environmentally friendly ionic liquids (ILs) as the electrolytes. With their vertically aligned structures and well spacing, aligned carbon nanotubes showed a strong capacitive behavior in the ionic liquid electrolyte. Plasma etching played an important role in opening the end tips of nanotubes and in introducing defects and oxygenated functionalization to the nanotubes, further enhancing the capacitive behavior of carbon nanotubes. With the combined contribution from double-layer capacitance and redox pseudocapacitance, carbon nanotubes showed a remarkable capacitance in ionic liquid electrolyte. Combining the highly capacitive behavior of carbon nanotube electrodes with the large electrochemical window of ionic liquid electrolytes, the resultant capacitors showed a high cell voltage, high energy density, and high power density, potentially outperforming the current electrochemical capacitor technology. The device configuration incorporating vertically aligned nanostructured electrodes and inherently safe electrolytes would be useful for improving performances for new energy storage technologies.

Abstract:Electrodes and electrolytes are two essential components of a supercapacitor and play important roles in determining the performance for the supercapacitor. In the present work, we investigated the electrochemical and capacitive behavior of aligned carbon nanotube electrodes in ionic liquid electrolytes to study the feasibility to develop high performance supercapacitors from these two components. Synthesis procedure of the carbon nanotubes and composition of the ionic liquids have been studied to achieve a high capacitance and fast charge/discharge process for the carbon nanotube electrode in the ionic liquid electrolyte.

Abstract:Performance of electrochemical capacitors is largely determined by the properties of the electrodes and the electrolytes employed. In this work, we utilized carbon nanotubes to develop a range of nanostructured carbon electrodes and combined them with ionic liquid electrolytes to fabricate new electrochemical capacitors. Difference in the cost, preparation, and performance of these electrode materials allows us to achieve the optimal performance / cost value for the capacitors and to select a specific type of nanoelectrodes to fabricate capacitors for a particular application. Combing the highly conductive and electrolyte-accessible structures of these nanoelectrodes with the large electrochemical window of the ionic liquid electrolytes, the resultant capacitors have achieved superior performances over the current state-of-the-art electrochemical capacitor technology. Excellent safety-related properties of the ionic liquid electrolytes ensure superior safety and lifetimes for these new capacitors.

Abstract:We introduce a novel approach for enhancing ion-storage capabilities through the self-assembled formation of ternary nanowires, consisting of a CoO-and-Nafion nanocomposite encasing metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). These nanowires highlight the indispensable role of the conductor-semimetallic SWNT-CoO heterojunction in expediting the redox reaction kinetics of the CoO while the Nafion component facilitates the transport of hydroxide ions. Consequently, supercapacitors comprising the ternary nanowires deliver the specific capacitance of calculated 18.84 mF cm −2 , five times higher than those obtained at the counterpart devices that lack Nafion and/or CoO. This self-assembly method precisely organizes functional components within the nanowires, aligning with electrochemical principles to optimize charge transfer and minimize concentration gradients for improved electrochemical polarization. Our function-enhanced ternary nanowires, together with their straightforward synthetic process, promise an alternative opportunity for formulating high-performance ion-storage electrodes and thus pave the way for their application in next-generation supercapacitor technologies.

Carbon Nanotube Wiring of Electrodes for High-Rate Lithium Batteries Using an Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquid Precursor As Dispersant and Binder: A Case Study on Iron Fluoride Nanoparticles

Abstract:To meet the energy and power demands of lithium-based batteries, numerous nanostructured and -decorated material prototypes have been proposed. In particular for insulating electrodes, a decrease of grain size coupled with wiring by a conductive phase is quite effective in improving the electroactivity. In this work, we report a novel electron-wiring method using single-wall carbon nanotubes in an imidazolium-based ionic liquid precursor, which enables them to be well disentangled and dispersed, even unzipped. As a case study, in situ formed iron fluoride nanoparticles (∼10 nm) are collected into micrometer-sized aggregates after wiring of merely 5 wt % carbon nanotubes in weight. These composite materials act as cathodes and exhibit a remarkable improvement of capacity and rate performances (e.g., 220 mAh/g at 0.1C and 80 mAh/g at 10C) due to the construction of mixed conductive networks. Therein, the ionic liquid remainder also serves as an in situ binder to generate a nanographene-coated fluoride, which can even run well without the addition of extra conductive carbon and binder. This nanotechnological procedure based on an ionic liquid succeeds without applying high temperature and pressure and is a significant step forward in developing high-power lithium batteries.
Controlled electrochemical oxidation for enhancing the capacitance of carbon nanotube composites

Abstract:The electrochemical oxidation, a promising method to enhance the capacitance of carbon nanotubes (CNT) composite electrodes and to fabricate ultrahigh capacitors based on CNT, was discussed. Measurement of d.c. capacitance and equivalent series resistance (ESR) of EDLC was presented. It was concluded that the electrochemical oxidation of carbon nanotube composite electrodes increases their capacitance by over a factor of two, due to a combination of amorphous carbon removal and the addition of functional groups. The acid oxidation of a CNT composite electrode and the electrochemical oxidation of a carbon fiber electrode enhanced the specific capacitances by 40%-70%. The ESR of capacitor units increased a little (under 15%) after electrolytic oxidation.
Enlarging Ion-Transfer Micropore Channels of Hierarchical Carbon Nanocages for Ultrahigh Energy and Power Densities

Abstract:Increasing the energy density of supercapacitor without sacrificing its high power is an everlasting pursuit in energy storage. Using ionic liquid electrolyte with high operating voltage can increase the energy density but usually at the expense of power density due to the large ion size, low ionic conductivity and high viscosity. Herein we demonstrate a simultaneous increase of the energy and power densities with ionic liquid electrolyte (EMIMBF4) mainly by enlarging the ion-transfer micropore channels of the electrode material, i.e., the unique hierarchical carbon nanocages (hCNC). Boudouard reaction is adopted to tune the micropore size while remaining the hierarchical framework of hCNC. Meanwhile, the specific surface area, pore volume and conductivity are also increased under optimal activation temperature. Such a unique modification boosts the large-sized ion transfer, leading to the obvious decrease of equivalent series resistance and the dramatic increase of supercapacitive performance thereof. The optimized product exhibits an energy density up to 153.8 W h kg−1 at the power density of 1.8 kW kg−1, and maintains 54.0 W h kg−1 even at an ultrahigh power density of 480.1 kW kg−1. This study demonstrates an effective way to explore advanced electrode materials by the fine regulation of micropores and related properties.

Abstract:High performance and flexible supercapacitors are strongly desired in miniaturized, smart energy-storage devices. Here, a hierarchical three-dimensional carbon nanostructure based on the thin carbon nanotube (TCNT) coiled around thick branched carbon nanotube (BCNT) composites (TCNT/BCNT) is constructed to improve the accessibility of ions in the electrodes of electrochemical energy storage devices. The coiled TCNT could increase the surface area for ions storing and accumulating charge, while the branches of BCNT provides ion and electron path channels for efficient charge transport. When assembled into an electric double layer (EDL) capacitor using an ionic liquid electrolyte, it exhibits the maximum energy density of 73.2 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 523.0W kg-1 and remains 27.9Wh kg-1 at a higher power density of 9.87 kW kg-1. Moreover, TCNT/BCNT-based flexible supercapacitors exhibit exceptional cycling performance and remarkable flexibility over 10 000 cycles under bending. The excellent electrochemical performance shows the great application potential of TCNT/BCNT in wearable and portable electronics.

Abstract:Ion‐insertion capacitors show promise to bridge the gap between supercapacitors of high power densities and batteries of high energy densities. While research efforts have primarily focused on Li+‐based capacitors (LICs), Na+‐based capacitors (SICs) are theoretically cheaper and more sustainable. Owing to the larger size of Na+ compared to Li+, finding high‐rate anode materials for SICs has been challenging. Herein, an SIC anode architecture is reported consisting of TiO2 nanoparticles anchored on a sheared‐carbon nanotubes backbone (TiO2/SCNT). The SCNT architecture provides advantages over other carbon architectures commonly used, such as reduced graphene oxide and CNT. In a half‐cell, the TiO2/SCNT electrode shows a capacity of 267 mAh g−1 at a 1 C charge/discharge rate and a capacity of 136 mAh g−1 at 10 C while maintaining 87% of initial capacity over 1000 cycles. When combined with activated carbon (AC) in a full cell, an energy density and power density of 54.9 Wh kg−1 and 1410 W kg−1, respectively, are achieved while retaining a 90% capacity retention over 5000 cycles. The favorable rate capability, energy and power density, and durability of the electrode is attributed to the enhanced electronic and Na+ conductivity of the TiO2/SCNT architecture.

Abstract:Ionic conductivity of a polymer electrolyte is a critical property for its application performance in lithium-ion batteries. This work reports a general and effective approach to increase the ionic conductivity of polymer electrolytes. Construction of ion-conducting pathways in polymer electrolytes is achieved with addition of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) functionalized with ion conductors, which build up as continuous ion-transport channels in the polymer electrolytes. Small amounts of the functionalized MWCNTs of about 0.02-0.03 wt % are effective to increase the ionic conductivities of polymer electrolytes by more than four times. The high ionic conductivity of polymer electrolytes allows the corresponding cells to operate at high C rates. The results demonstrate a general and effective approach for increasing the ionic conductivities of existing polymer electrolytes and the performance of the corresponding cells.
CNTs in Situ Attached to Α-Fe2o3 Submicron Spheres for Enhancing Lithium Storage Capacity

Abstract:In this work, we developed a facile hydrothermal method for synthesis of hybrid α-Fe2O3-carbon nanotubes (CNTs) architectures (α-Fe2O3-CNTs-1 and α-Fe2O3-CNTs-2). The CNTs are in situ attached to the α-Fe2O3 submicron spheres and form three-dimensional network robust architectures. The increase in the amount of CNTs in the network α-Fe2O3-CNTs architectures will significantly enhance the cycling and rate performance, as the flexible and robust CNTs could ensure the fast electron transport pathways, enhance the electronic conductivity, and improve the structural stability of the electrode. As for pure α-Fe2O3 submicron spheres, the capacity decreased significantly and retained at 377.4 mAh g(-1) after 11 cycles, and the capacity has a slightly increasing trend at the following cycling. In contrast, the network α-Fe2O3-CNTs-2 electrode shows the most remarkable performance. At the 60th cycle, the capacity of network α-Fe2O3-CNTs-2 (764.5 mAh g(-1)) is 1.78 times than that of α-Fe2O3 submicron spheres (428.3 mAh g(-1)). The long-term cycling performance (1000 cycles) of samples at a high current density of 5 C showed that the capacity of α-Fe2O3 submicron spheres fade to ∼37.3 mAh g(-1) at the 400th cycle and gradually increased to ∼116.7 mAh g(-1) at the 1000th cycle. The capacity of network α-Fe2O3-CNTs-2 maintained at ∼220.2 mAh g(-1) before the 400th cycle, arrived at ∼326.5 mAh g(-1) in the 615th, cycle and retained this value until 1000th cycle. The network α-Fe2O3-CNTs-2 composite could significantly enhance the cycling and rate performance than pure α-Fe2O3 submicron spheres composite.

Abstract:Effect of stacking structure of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) on its performance as electrode of supercapacitor was investigated in the present work. Considering SWCNTs easily formed bundles due to strong van de Waals attraction between tubes, we proposed first dispersion of SWCNTs by ionic liquids (ILs) of 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMIMBF4), followed by fabrication of buckypaper by compression. The debundling effect of ILs on SWCNTs increased the interface between electrode and electrolyte, decreased electrical resistance, and, consequently, increased performance of the supercapacitor. Since ILs, used to disperse SWCNTs, also functioned as electrolyte in supercapacitor, our method is a simple way to prepare buckypaper electrode with high performance.
Aligned carbon nanotube/zinc oxide nanowire hybrids as high performance electrodes for supercapacitor applications

Abstract:Carbon nanotube/metal oxide based hybrids are envisioned as high performance electrochemical energy storage electrodes since these systems can provide improved performances utilizing an electric double layer coupled with fast faradaic pseudocapacitive charge storage mechanisms. In this work, we show that high performance supercapacitor electrodes with a specific capacitance of ∼192 F/g along with a maximum energy density of ∼3.8 W h/kg and a power density of ∼28 kW/kg can be achieved by synthesizing zinc oxide nanowires (ZnO NWs) directly on top of aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). In comparison to pristine MWCNTs, these constitute a 12-fold of increase in specific capacitance as well as corresponding power and energy density values. These electrodes also possess high cycling stability and were able to retain ∼99% of their specific capacitance value over 2000 charging discharging cycles. These findings indicate potential use of a MWCNT/ZnO NW hybrid material for future electrochemical energy storage applications.

Abstract:Electrochemical cyclic voltammetric(CV) scan was applied to inducing the partial oxidation and defects of carbon nanotubes(CNTs). The electrochemically induced functional groups and physical defects were demonstra- ted to show positive effects on the nanotube capacitance, as exemplified by super-long CNT arrays as model for the easy fabrication of CNT electrodes. Abstract:A lithium-ion capacitor (LIC) consisting of a lithium-ion battery (LIB)-type anode and a supercapacitor (SC)-type cathode gains wide attention on account of the integration with the merits of high-energy LIB and high-power SC. However, LIC usually shows low energy/power density at high charge/discharge rate due to the sluggish charge/discharge kinetics of the LIB-type anode. Herein, to address this issue, we develop a self-supported anode material for LIC (V2O3@CNFs) with good charge transfer kinetics by encapsulating V2O3 nanoparticles in carbon nanofibers with internal void spaces. The V2O3 nanoparticles not only provide abundant Litstorage sites but also shorten routes for Li+ diffusion and electron transport, which both improve the charge transfer kinetics. Besides, the 3D conductive carbon nanofiber network serves as a mechanical support for V2O3 nanoparticles and provides the reserved internal void spaces to buffer the volumetric expansion and subsequent aggregation during the charge-discharge process of V2O3. Consequently, the optimal V2O3@CNF anode delivers a high capacity (569.1 mA h g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1)), surprising rate capability (238.5 mA h g(-1) at 10.0 A g(-1)) and long-term cyclic steadiness (91.0% retention after 1000 cycles at 1.0 A g(-1)) in half-cell tests. Furthermore, the LICs assembled with activated carbon cathode and V2O3@CNF anode exhibit a high energy density (97.6 W h kg(-1)), a high power density (12.1 kW kg(-1) with 20.2 W h kg(-1) retained), and impressive cyclic steadiness (73% retention after 5000 cycles at 1.0 A g(-1)) in a broad working voltage (0.005-4.0 V).
Molten-salt Directed Mesopore Engineering of Carbon Nanotubes for Energetic Quasi-Solid-state Supercapacitors

Abstract:Polymer gel electrolytes have been actively employed in exploiting solid-state supercapacitors. However, the access to tiny pores of electrode materials is hindered by the sticky nature and sluggish ion transport of polymers. Consequently, supercapacitors usually present much lower capacitance in gel electrolytes than in liquid elec-trolytes. Here, we develop a molten-salt-directed mesopore engineering to design carbon nanotubes that are highly accessible to gel electrolytes. The rich mesopores, 12-15 nm in diameter and cross-linked, drastically facilitate the infilling of gel electrolytes into carbon nanotubes, leading to robust capacitive performance. Such mesoporous carbon nanotubes exhibit a high capacitance of 195.2 F g-1 in polyvinyl alcohol electrolyte and an ion diffusion coefficient of 2.8 x 10-7 cm2 s- 1, close to that in liquid electrolyte. Additionally, solid-state supercapacitors based on mesoporous carbon nanotubes exhibit a short relaxation time of 39 ms and a capac-ity retention of 93% over 10000 cycles, thus demonstrating their great potential in practical applications.
Hierarchical architecture of ZIF-8@ZIF-67-Derived N-doped carbon nanotube hollow polyhedron supported on 2D Ti3C2Tx nanosheets targeting enhanced lithium-ion capacitors

Abstract:The matching of long cycle life, high power density, and high energy density has been an inevitable requirement for the development of efficient anode materials for lithium-ion capacitors (LICs). Here, we introduce an N-doped carbon nanotube hollow polyhedron structure (Co3O4-CNT-800) with high specific surface area and active sites, which is anchored with two-dimensional (2D) Ti3C2Tx nanosheets with metallic conductivity and abundant surface functional groups by electrostatic adsorption to form a hierarchical multilevel hollow semi-covered framework structure. Benefiting from the synergistic effect between Co3O4-CNT-800 and Ti3C2Tx, the composites exhibit superior energy storage efficiency and long cycling stability. The Co3O4-CNT-800/Ti3C2Tx electrodes exhibit a high specific capacity of 817C/g at a current density of 0.5 A/g under the three-electrode system, and the capacity retention rate is 91 % after 5000 cycles at a current density of 2 A/g. Additionally, we assembled Co3O4-CNT-800/Ti3C2Tx as the anode and Activated carbon (AC) cathode to form LIC devices, which showed an electrochemical test result of 90.01 % capacitance retention after 8000 cycles at 2 A/g, and the maximum power density of the LIC was 3000 W/kg and the maximum energy density was 121 Wh/kg. This work pioneered the combination of N-doped carbon nanotube hollow polyhedron structure with two-dimensional Ti3C2Tx, which provides an effective strategy for preparing LIC negative electrode materials with high specific capacitance and long cycling stability.
Enhanced Supercapacitor Performance by Harnessing Carbon Nanoparticles and Colloidal SnO2 Quantum Dots

Abstract:The creation of effective supercapacitor materials is still a priority in the quest to improve energy storage technology. Herein, we present a novel nanocomposite composed of carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) and colloidal SnO2 quantum dots (c-SQDs) or colloidal SnO2 ultrasmall nanoparticles, synthesized through a facile sonochemical-assisted hydrothermal approach. The XRD and XPS analyses confirmed the successful synthesis and composition of the CNP/c-SQD nanocomposite. Morphology studies revealed a well-dispersed morphology with intimate interfacial interactions between the CNPs and c-SQDs. Specifically, the nanocomposite exhibited a high specific capacitance of 569 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g, surpassing conventional carbon-based supercapacitors. Furthermore, the nanocomposite displayed excellent stability with 99% capacity retention after 5000 cycles, indicative of its superior cyclability. These results underscore the potential of the CNP/c-SQD nanocomposite as a promising electrode material for high-performance supercapacitor applications, offering enhanced charge storage capacity, stability, and cyclability. This study contributes to the advancement of energy storage technologies, paving the way for the development of efficient and sustainable electrochemical energy storage devices.
