Abstract:A topological method for the design and optimization of planar circularly polarized (CP) directional antenna with low profile was presented. By inserting two parasitic layers, generated by particle swarm optimization, between the equiangular spiral antenna and the ground, a low-profile wideband CP antenna with directional radiation pattern and high gain is achieved. The optimized antenna shows an impedance matching band (S11<-10 dB) of 4–12 GHz with a whole-band stable directional pattern in 4–11.5 GHz, and the antenna gain peak is 8 dBi, which work well in the available band. Measured return loss, antenna gain, and far field patterns agree well with simulation results.

Abstract:A novel dielectric-supported switched parasitic antenna array for mobile wireless communications is developed. The antenna array provides multiple radiation patterns with a single RF port without the need for RF switches or phase shifters in the direct RF signal path. The size reduction of the seven-element monopole antenna was accomplished by employing dielectric-supported structure with a relative permittivity around 2.2. Measured results are used to demonstrate the performance improvement.

Abstract:This paper postulates a novel omnidirectional low-profile ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna, which is structured by discrete embedded dielectric resonator antenna with features of both low-profile dielectric resonator (DR) and thin planar monopole antenna, where the laminated equilateral triangular DR and the rectangular metal patch monopole are stacked up. This new design can lower the profile of the antenna. Furthermore, the symmetric DR and the monopole structure are able to make the surface currents in some operating modes opposite in phase, together with the characteristics of the coplanar waveguide (CPW) feed structure and the DR, the cross-polarization is reduced effectively. The mode analysis has been done to show how the antenna achieves the UWB. The CPW which can integrate with integrated circuits easily is used to provide the excitation source. The antenna provides consistent omnidirectivity, consistent gain, low cross-polarization, and high-radiation efficiency within the entire operation band. A prototype (dimensions are 17.6 mm $\times33.6$ mm and 1.524 mm thickness) is fabricated and measured. The measurements are well correlated with the simulations.

Abstract:There is a dilemma for omnidirectional antennas between a narrow beam on the elevation plane and a low-profile antenna configuration. In this communication, an annular loading of parasitic elements mechanism is proposed to circumvent the difficulty. A study for the proposed analytical model shows that the radiation from the parasitic elements can sufficiently cancel the original one in unwanted directions and thus reduce the beamwidth sufficiently. This array-based mechanism is validated for an omnidirectional circular patch antenna. With a proper design of the coplanar parasitic elements, a beamwidth reduction of 50° for the maximum radiation toward the ground plane and 73° for the maximum radiation toward the direction of 45° above the ground plane has been achieved, respectively. Both antennas have a simple configuration, and the total antenna thicknesses are only 0.06 and 0.01 guide wavelength, respectively.

Abstract:Proposed is an ultra-low-profile loop antenna backed by an electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) surface reflector, where the EBG surface can effectively exhibit the property of a perfect magnetic conductor (PMC) inside a deliberately designed bandwidth. It is shown that, assisted by the effective PMC bandwidth, while the proposed antenna is with a 0.07-lambda spacing between the loops and the EBG reflector, its axial ratio (AR) and voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) performances are significantly improved. Experimental measurements show that the prototype antenna has a 3 dB AR bandwidth of 17% with an input VSWR less than 1.6. The proposed approach can find a wide range of low-profile circularly polarised (CP) antenna applications.

Abstract:A wideband tri-polarized antenna is presented in this letter. The proposed hybrid structure consists of a cylindrical dielectric resonator (DR) and a copper cylinder. Tri-polarized operation is achieved by exciting the HE11x and HE11y modes of the DR, and the /4 monopole mode of the copper cylinder. The resonant frequency of the monopole mode is well tuned to work cooperatively with the two HE11 modes. Only one single substrate layer is required to integrate the three balanced feedings. A prototype of the proposed antenna is built and tested. The measured overlapping impedance bandwidth of the three ports is 410 MHz (2.38-2.79 GHz), and the isolation among the three ports is also less than -27 dB across the bandwidth. Abstract:A high-gain hybrid monopole dielectric resonator antenna is proposed. The bridge-shaped dielectric resonator is selected as radiator, which works in high-order modes. The monopole excites the DR as the feeding mechanism and also acts as an effective radiator itself. The bandwidth of 46.6% at the centered frequency of 4.85GHz and the gain of over 8dBi for the entire operational bandwidth have been achieved. An enhancement of gain by over 3dBi has been obtained compared to a single monopole antenna mounted on the ground plane.

Abstract:A dual-band coaperture monopolar antenna with a very low profile is investigated in this communication. A novel cross-layer folded structure is proposed to construct a single-band monopolar antenna in the lower band. It can provide enough space for another higher band section to be integrated together without extra profile. Meanwhile, by adding a high-frequency radiation element to the reserved space, a dual-band coaperture antenna with independent frequency control is obtained. Moreover, by exciting TM01 and TM02 modes in both bands, the proposed antenna can achieve a relatively large impedance bandwidth of 10.9% in the lower band and 14.6% in the upper band with a thickness of 3.14 mm. Stable monopole-like radiation patterns are achieved within the two bands and the gains in the lower and upper bands are 5.2–5.8 and 3.7–5 dBi, respectively. Compared with other works, the proposed antenna features its low-profile and independent band performance.

Abstract:A low-profile broadband circularly polarized (CP) dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) is proposed, utilizing DR reutilization and metasurface (MS) techniques. Two resonant frequencies and an AR minimum are achieved simultaneously, by exciting a rectangular DR with an inclined corner-truncated coupling slot, for it generates nearly degenerated TE 111 modes. For significant bandwidth enhancement and low profile, a new resonator is formed by reusing the DR and loading an MS above, which works in orthogonal TM modes. To increase the axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) further without enlarging the antenna size, two parasitic patches are printed on two adjacent side walls of the DR. To verify the rationality and feasibility, the antenna is fabricated and measured. The fabricated prototype possesses the profile of 0.06 λ 0 ( λ 0 is the free-space wavelength at the center frequency). The measured impedance bandwidth (IBW) and ARBW are 36.05% (4.23 ~ 6.09 GHz) and 22.46% (4.9 ~ 6.14 GHz), respectively. The proposed antenna has both broadband characteristics and a low profile, making it easy to integrate into space-limited wireless communication systems with high data rates.

Abstract:A radiation pattern reconfigurable antenna for WLAN applications is proposed in this paper. The antenna consists of center monopole, a pair of parasitic elements and PIN diodes. By controlling the switch states of the PIN diodes, the antenna can be worked as a monopole antenna with an omnidirectional pattern (Mode 1), a monopole antenna with reflector providing unidirectional pattern (Mode 2 and 3) or a 3-element monopole array with bidirectional pattern (Mode 4). The simulated results demonstrated S11 better than -10 dB for all the four modes over 2.4 -2.48 GHz.

Abstract:In this paper, a high-gain low-sidelobe circular-shaped monopulse antenna array operating in W-band is proposed. The antenna array is distributed on a circular aperture, which maximizes the usage efficiency of area and is suitable for mounting on a rotating platform with limited space. By loading dielectric in the waveguide, more radiating slots can be arranged in the same physical length as compared to the hollow waveguide, which is beneficial to suppress the sidelobe level. The feed network and the sum-difference network are placed on different layers to reduce the overall size of the antenna. The proposed antenna structure ensures good electrical connection between the feed network and the radiation array, and has high mechanical strength. Besides, the antenna array is low profile and is easy to machine. The measured results show that at center frequency 93 GHz, the reflection coefficients of sum and difference ports are less than -15 dB, the maximal gain is 38.58 dBi, the sidelobe level is lower than -20 dB, and the sum-difference contradictions are less than 4 dB.

OAM features of this microwave antenna are characterized in detail based on simulation and experimental results. Near fields and far fields with different OAM modes are investigated as well. This dielectric resonator antenna is expected to be widely used in the future wireless OAM system owing to its small size, compact structure and low cost.

Abstract:A millimeter-wave (mmW) low-profile wideband magneto-electric (ME) monopole antenna with the vertically polarized endfire radiation is presented by combining a pair of the top-loaded electric monopoles with a thin open-ended substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) with the extended lower broad wall. The antenna has a profile of 0.19 wavelength at the center frequency of the operating band, a wide bandwidth of 60.7% (from 23.5 to 44 GHz) covering all the fifth-generation (5G) mmW bands in the Ka-band, a stable gain of around 7 dBi, and a tilted radiation pattern. Then a $1 times 8$ ME-monopole array is designed to investigate the beam scanning properties and the effects of the metallic ground and the polycarbonate radome, which should be considered in practical applications. As a sample, a $1 times 8$ array fed by an SIW feed network, assembled on a metallic ground plane, and covered by a polycarbonate radome is finally designed, fabricated, and measured. The prototype achieves promising radiation features with a gain up to 15.3 dBi. Owing to the compact low-profile structure with good performance, the proposed design would be valuable to the mmW applications.

Abstract:A dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) with the loading of metasurface (MS) is proposed for low-profile, wide-bandwidth and compact-size. Firstly, an MS structure consisting of $6times6$ periodic metallic patch cells is loaded above the DRA. It aims to excite an additional TM surface wave above the fundamental TE<sub>111</sub> mode of the rectangular DRA. Then, the shorting walls are printed on two sides of the dielectric, thus moving down the operating frequency with respect to its TM surface wave mode. As such, the bandwidth of the antenna is significantly widened with compact-size under the operation of TE<sub>111</sub> and TM surface wave modes. Finally, the proposed DRA with enhanced performance is fabricated and tested. The results show that an impedance bandwidth of the antenna is dramatically increased to about 17.2%, covering the frequency range from 1.75 to 2.08 GHz, which is about 9.6 times wider than the traditional DRA at the same thickness (1.8%). Besides, it still maintains the broadside radiation pattern with stable gain of around 6.6 dBi and fairly low cross polarizations of below −26 dB. Particularly, the overall size of the radiator still maintains as small as about $0.32lambda _{0} times 0.32lambda _{0} times 0.044lambda _{0}$ . It should be noted that the analysis of the antenna is carried out by using Ansys HFSS software version 14.0 and ADS 2011.

Abstract:A low-profile dual-polarized planar ultrawideband modular antenna (PUMA) array is proposed in this article. The overall profile is as small as 11.4 mm ( $0.228\lambda _{high}$ , where $\lambda _{high}$ is the free-space wavelength at the highest operating frequency) based on element sizes $25\times25$ mm2 ( $0.5\times 0.5\lambda _{high}^{2}$ ) and a large operating frequency bandwidth achieved by loading lossless parasitic metal strips between the dipole patches and the ground plane. The loop-mode resonance that causes deterioration of the port isolation around the lowest operating frequency is comprehensively analyzed and suppression methods are proposed. To further reduce the overall profile, a metasurface-based wide-angle impedance matching (MS-WAIM) layer is introduced. The surface waves guided by the MS-WAIM layer during wide-angle scanning in H-plane are suppressed by cutting properly-sized square holes at critical positions. The calculated results show that the proposed infinite array can scan up to ±60° in E-/H-planes with active voltage standing wave ratios (VSWRs) below 2.9 within 2-6 GHz and orthogonal port isolations beyond 20 dB. A $12\times11$ array prototype is fabricated and reasonable agreement is achieved between the calculated and measured results.

Abstract:This communication mainly discusses the design of the low-profile tri-polarized diversity dielectric resonator antenna (DRA). It employs the ${\text{HEM}}_{\mathrm {13\delta }}^{\mathrm {x}}$ , ${\text{HEM}}_{\mathrm {13\delta }}^{\mathrm {y}}$ , and ${\text{TM}}_{\mathrm {02\delta }}$ modes of the cylindrical DRA. Using the dielectric waveguide model (DWM), new solution with a low-profile feature (height-to-radius ratio = 0.17) is found. For the demonstration, a low-profile tri-polarized cylindrical DRA is developed for WLAN 5.8-GHz application, which is fed by four notched slots of nearly a “O” shape. Two sets of slot pairs excite the ${\text{HEM}}_{\mathrm {13\delta }}^{\mathrm {x}}$ and ${\text{HEM}}_{\mathrm {13\delta }}^{\mathrm {y}}$ modes, which generate the broadside radiation patterns with $y$ - and $x$ -polarization, respectively. As four slots have in-phase and equal-amplitude inputs, the ${\text{TM}}_{\mathrm {02\delta }}$ mode of the cylindrical DRA can be activated, which produces the omnidirectional radiation pattern with vertical polarization. The result shows that the proposed tri-polarized cylindrical DRA can provide a height of $0.1\lambda _{\mathrm {o}}$ , which is a new low among the reported tri-polarized DRAs. In addition, the proposed DRA exhibits other advantages, such as high gain, simple processing, and easy integration with the circuit.

Abstract:A low-profile omnidirectional dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) with wide-bandwidth and high-selectivity filtering response is proposed. Initially, the traditional low-profile DRA has no filtering response. Then, an array of four shorting pins1 is loaded inside the DRA. It proves that the nonradiative pins1 mode could be excited and the radiation-gain null1 in the upper stopband is produced due to the canceled electric fields. Then, the shorting pins2 is loaded to reallocate these modes closely to each other. After that, the additional shorting pins3 is embedded to resonate the nonradiative pins3 mode, thus forming up the radiation-gain null2 in the lower stopband. Finally, the proposed DRA is fabricated and measured. The antenna has simultaneously acquired wide bandwidth (41.2%) and stable omnidirectional patterns in the range of 1.85–2.81 GHz. Besides, the filtering response is generated with a 14 dB out-of-band suppression level. Particularly, it maintains the primary property of the traditional DRA without extra feeding circuit, such as single layer, compact volume, and low profile (0.12 free-space wavelength).

Abstract:A dual-band surface wave antenna (DBSWA) that realizes a monopole-like radiation pattern with a low-profile configuration is designed and measured. The antenna consists of two parts: a center-fed modified crosspatch to excite surface waves at two frequency bands, and a thin dielectric slab loaded with periodic patches to support the propagation of the surface waves. The surface wave property and radiation mechanism of the DBSWA are described, and parametric studies are performed to understand the dual-band characteristics of the antenna. The proposed antenna with only 3 mm thickness (< 0.05 lambda) is fabricated and tested, which resonates at 4.2 and 4.9 GHz. The corresponding impedance bandwidths and gains are 1.10% and 4.9 dBi for the low frequency band and 3.94% and 5.4 dBi for the high frequency band.

Abstract:A low-profile broadband vertically polarized microstrip magnetic dipole antenna with endfire radiation is proposed for millimeter-wave (mmWave) applications. For the bandwidth enhancement, a lower resonance is introduced by the parasitic patches firstly. Then, a top-loaded circular probe and an inset proximity-coupled feed structure are employed for adjusting the resonances from the magnetic dipole antenna and the parasitic patches. In this way, a broad impedance bandwidth is attained. After that, a 1 × 4 antenna array prototype is designed, fabricated and tested. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed array features an impedance bandwidth wider than 19% at 28 GHz mmWave frequency band under an ultralow-profile of 0.075λ0 at the center frequency.

Abstract:A low-profile wide-angle coverage antenna for Ad Hoc communication networks is presented in this letter, which consists primarily of a rotationally symmetrical structure with a microstrip patch antenna positioned at its center. Utilizing two orthogonal coupling feeds, the microstrip antenna produces circularly polarized radiation in the broadside direction. Meanwhile, the rotationally thin structure is driven by the coupling of the microstrip patch, and a linearly polarized radiation out of the range of ±15° is generated. Due to this parasitic structure, the radiation of the whole antenna at the upper hemisphere is balanced greatly, which leads to the wide-angle coverage ability enhancement of the low-profile antenna. A prototype operating at 2.7 GHz is fabricated and tested, demonstrating an impedance bandwidth of 15% (2.4 to 2.8 GHz). Measurement results show a 6 dB difference between the maximum and minimum gain in the upper hemisphere. With an overall antenna height of just 6 mm, all gains in the upper hemisphere exceed −3.5 dB.
