Abstract:Biochar is produced by pyrolysis of biomass residues under limited oxygen conditions. In recent years, biochar as an amendment has received increasing attention on composting and soil remediation, due to its unique properties such as chemical recalcitrance, high porosity and sorption capacity, and large surface area. This paper provides an overview on the impact of biochar on the chemical characteristics (greenhouse gas emissions, nitrogen loss, decomposition and humification of organic matter) and microbial community structure during composting of organic wastes. This review also discusses the use of biochar for remediation of soils contaminated with organic pollutants and heavy metals as well as related mechanisms. Besides its aging, the effects of biochar on the environment fate and efficacy of pesticides deserve special attention. Moreover, the combined application of biochar and compost affects synergistically on soil remediation and plant growth. Future research needs are identified to ensure a wide application of biochar in composting and soil remediation. Graphical abstract ᅟ
Influence of Pyrolysis Temperature on Production of Digested Sludge Biochar and Its Application for Ammonium Removal from Municipal Wastewater

Abstract:Water contamination by ammonium (NH4+) can present considerable risks to natural ecosystems. This work evaluates the potential application of biochar, produced from the pyrolysis of digested sludge, to remove ammonium from water. Anaerobic digester sludge was collected from a municipal wastewater treatment plant in Alberta, Canada, and individual biochars were produced at 50 degrees C temperature increments between 350 degrees C and 550 degrees C. The chemical characteristics of the resulting biochars were determined using elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), BET surface area analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Our findings demonstrate that the biochar yield decreased with increasing pyrolysis temperature, and biochar produced at 450 degrees C (BC450) had the highest ammonium removal capacity due to its higher surface area and functional group density. The Langmuir isotherm best described the observed ammonium removal capacity by the biochars, indicating that monolayer chemical adsorption may be the dominating mechanism. Biochar ammonium removal capacity was 1.2 mg NH4-N per gram of biochar in municipal wastewater, which is lower than that observed in parallel experiments using a synthetic ammonium solution (1.4 mg NH4+-N/g biochar). This phenomenon is likely due to competition between ammonia and other containments for sorption to biochar surface sites. Our results demonstrate for the first time ever that biochar produced from digester sludge is a promising adsorbent for ammonium removal from municipal wastewater. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Biochar is produced from the pyrolysis of carbon-rich plant- and animal-residues under low oxygen and high temperature conditions and has been increasingly used for its positive role in soil compartmentalization through activities such as carbon sequestration and improving soil quality. Biochar is also considered a unique adsorbent due to its high specific surface area and highly carbonaceous nature. Therefore, soil amendments with small amounts of biochar could result in higher adsorption and, consequently, decrease the bioavailability of contaminants to microbial communities, plants, earthworms, and other organisms in the soil. However, the mechanisms affecting the environmental fate and behavior of organic contaminants, especially pesticides in biochar-amended soil, are not well understood. The purpose of this work is to review the role of biochar in primary processes, such as adsorption–desorption and leaching of pesticides. Biochar has demonstrable effects on the fate and effects of pesticides and has been shown to affect the degradation and bioavailability of pesticides for living organisms. Moreover, some key aspects of agricultural and environmental applications of biochar are highlighted.

Abstract:This work aimed to investigate the effect of pyrolysis temperature on the yield and properties of biochars synthesized from herbaceous and woody plants. Four typical materials, including two herbaceous plants (rice straw, corn straw) and two woody plants ( camellia oleifera shells, garden waste), were used in the experiments under five operating temperatures (from 300 °C to 700 °C, with an interval of 100 °C). The results showed biochar derived from herbaceous plants had a significantly higher pH (from 7.68 to 11.29 for RS), electrical conductivity (EC, from 6.5 Ms cm −1 to 13.2 mS cm −1 for RS), cation exchange conductivity (CEC, from 27.81 cmol kg −1 to 21.69 cmol kg −1 for RS), and ash content (from 21.79% to 32.71% for RS) than the biochar from woody plants, but the volatile matter (VM, from 42.23% to 11.77% for OT) and specific surface area (BET, from 2.88 m 2 g −1 to 301.67 m 2 g −1 for OT) in the woody plant-derived biochar were higher. Except for CEC and VM, all the previously referred physicochemical characteristics in the as-prepared biochars increased with the increasing pyrolysis temperature, the H/C and O/C values of herbaceous and woody plant-derived biochar were lower than 0.9 and 0.3, respectively, confirming their potential as the material for carbon sequestration. The results revealed that biochar made from herbaceous plants was more suitable for acidic soil amendments. In contrast, woody plant-derived biochar were recommended to remove heavy metals in environmental remediation and water treatment.

Abstract:Biochar, a by-product of biomass pyrolysis, has been suggested as a mean to combat climate change, and at the same time to achieve agricultural and environmental benefits. As one possible source of the components with high aromatic structure in soil humus, biochar is of great importance in increasing soil carbon storage and improving soil nutrient retention and nutrient availability, and in maintaining the balance of soil ecosystem. This paper briefly reviewed and synthesized recent findings and discussions regarding the production and characteristics of biochar, its effects on global climate change and particularly in relation to the environmental effects of biochar in soils. Agronomic benefits of biochar application are critically highlighted because researches show that biochar had varied effects on crop productivity thorough the different bio-physical interactions between the biochar and the soils, which are deserved for further investigations. Potential pitfalls and knowledge gaps were briefly discussed on the environmental behavior and the effects of biochar in agricultural ecosystem.

Abstract:This work explored the effect of temperature, production method, and feedstock type on the physicochemical and biological properties of biochars and hydrochars. Biochars and hydrochars made at lower temperatures had higher production rates. Higher pyrolysis temperatures not only increased carbon content of biochars but also produced higher thermal stability biochars that did not start to decompose in air after 400–450°C. The production method showed strong effect on biochar properties. Compared to the dry-pyrolysis biochars derived from the same feedstocks, the hydrochars had more acidic pH values and lower carbon contents. The results showed that feedstock types could also influence characteristics of the biochars. None of the chars showed statistically significant effects on plant seed germination and seedling growth and thus could be used as soil amendments. Our findings indicated that biochars with different properties could be developed by changing production conditions to better satisfy their environmental applications.

Abstract:Biochar obtained from a biomass pyrolytic polygeneration technology exhibits great potential as an adsorbent, because of its renewability, porosity and desirable surface chemical properties. Pyrolysis temperature and feed are important elements in the preparation of biochar. Thus, the effects of these factors on the physicochemical properties of biochar were investigated in this study. The adsorption of biochar was evaluated using water, CO2, phenol, and methylene blue (MB) as adsorbates. The correlation between adsorption capacity and physicochemical properties was determined using the Pearson correlation. Results indicated that temperature could significantly affect the structure of biochar. The effects of biomass species were also noticeable as well. The number of macropores and their contribution to the total surface area for cotton stalk, bamboo, and rapeseed stalk increased with an increase in temperatures, meanwhile, the number of micropores decreased at high temperatures. At the same temperature, the macropore, mesopore, and micropore components of biochar produced by different species were markedly different. The water adsorption and CO2 adsorption of biochar were close to those of commercial activated carbon (AC), whereas the adsorption capacity of untreated biochar on phenol and MB was less than that of AC. Porosity exerted more significant effects on the adsorption capacity of biochar, compared with functional groups. The surface area of the micropores exhibited a significant positive correlation with the adsorption of CO2, phenol, and MB. The hydroxyl group was positively correlated with water adsorption.

Abstract:Abstract Recent studies on water retention behaviour of biochar amended soil rarely considers the effect of pyrolysis temperature and also feedstock type into account. It is well known that pyrolysis temperature and feedstock type influences the physical and chemical properties of biochar due to stagewise decomposition of structure and chemical bonds. Further, soil density, which is in a loose state (in agricultural applications) and dense (in geo-environmental engineering applications) can also influence water retention behaviour of biochar amended soils. The major objective of this study is to investigate the water retention properties of soil amended with three different biochars in both loose and dense state. The biochars, i.e. water hyacinth biochar (WHB), chicken manure biochar (CMB) and wood biochar (WB) were produced in-house at different pyrolysis temperature. After then, biochars at 5% and 10% (w/w%) were amended to the soil. Water retention behaviour (soil suction and gravimetric water content) was studied under drying and wetting cycle simulated by varying relative humidity (RH, 50–90%). Results show that 10% WHB produced at 300 °C were found to possess highest water retention. CMB is found to possess higher water retention than WB for 10% amendment ratio. In general, the addition of three biochars (at both 300 °C and 600 °C) at 10% (w/w) significantly improved the water retention at all suction ranges in both loose and dense compaction state as compared to that of the bare soil. The adsorption (wetting) and desorption (drying) capacity of biochar amended soils is constant at corresponding RH.

Abstract:Given the increase in global threats to the environment and the growth in energy demand, there is great interest in developing renewable and green biochar-based materials. This article investigated ball-milled cellulosic biochar-based composites incorporating minerals (montmorillonite, calcite, or quartz) synthesized by an in situ carbon-bed pyrolysis method. The synthesized samples were examined using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM, TEM), N-2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), Raman spectroscopy, and organic dyes adsorption analysis. It was shown that the mineral components incorporated during ball-milling modified the microstructure, morphology, and surface properties of biochar composites. Synergistic effects of oxygen functional groups and mesoporous layered structure contributed to the functionalization and surface modification of biochar-based montmorillonite composites, as reflected by a remarkably enhanced adsorption performance of organic dyes. Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models were found to provide an accurate description of the chemical adsorption of MB onto the heterogeneous surface of the biochar-based montmorillonite composite via cation exchange.

Abstract:Biochars, produced by pyrolyzing vermicompost at 300, 500, and 700°C were characterized and their ability to adsorb the dyes Congo red (CR) and Methylene blue (MB) in an aqueous solution was investigated. The physical and chemical properties of biochars varied significantly based on the pyrolysis temperatures. Analysis of the data revealed that the aromaticity, polarity, specific surface area, pH, and ash content of the biochars increased gradually with the increase in pyrolysis temperature, while the cation exchange capacity, and carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen contents decreased. The adsorption kinetics of CR and MB were described by pseudo-second-order kinetic models. Both of Langmuir and Temkin model could be employed to describe the adsorption behaviors of CR and MB by these biochars. The biochars generated at higher pyrolysis temperature displayed higher CR adsorption capacities and lower MB adsorption capacities than those compared with the biochars generated at lower pyrolysis temperatures. The biochar generated at the higher pyrolytic temperature displayed the higher ability to adsorb CR owing to its promoted aromaticity, and the cation exchange is the key factor that positively affects adsorption of MB.

Abstract:Transforming biosolids into biochar, through pyrolysis, could result in more sustainable waste management. Influence of pyrolysis conditions (temperature, heating rate and residence time) on physico-chemical properties of biosolids (collected at Mount Martha Water Recycling Plant, Melbourne), phosphorus fractions and phosphorus forms was investigated. Twelve different biochar samples were produced at 400, 500 and 600 °C, at two heating rates (5 and 20 °C/min) and at two residence times (30 and 120 min). Biochar yield, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), elements (C, H and N) and BET surface area were analysed. Sequential extraction of P in biosolids and resultant biochars was done using Hedley method. Characterization was completed with SEM images and results from 31P liquid state NMR. Increased temperatures would not only increase the alkalinity, decrease EC and increase the adsorption capacity by increasing the surface area but also convert the readily available P to a less available pool. Therefore, this nutrient might be released to soil slowly over a longer period of time. The results showed that temperature, along with residence time and heating rate, had a significant effect on the characteristics observed. Therefore, all these factors need to be carefully considered when preparing biochar for use as a soil amendment.

Abstract:In this study, corn straw derived biochars were prepared at different temperatures of 300, 500, 700ï'°C, respectively, and the characteristics of corn straw biochars were investigated. Additionally, the adsorption behaviors of vanadium (III, IV, V) on biochars were systematically studied by batch experiments. The absorbents were characterized by ion-exchange capacity (IEC), X-ray Diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption, and FTIR. The yield of biochar decreases with the increase of pyrolysis temperature. The more ash content is retained, the more alkaline biochar is. The specific area of biochars increased with the rising pyrolysis temperature. With the increase of temperature, the structure became porous and the content of surface functional group elements remained low. Although the content of zinc in biochar is relatively high, the leaching toxicity of biochar does not exceed the Chinese standard. The adsorption capacity of biochars for vanadium (V) decreased under high temperature (700ï'°C). In the contrast, The adsorption capacities of biochars for vanadium (IV) and vanadium (III) improved under high temperature. The adsorption mechanisms for vanadium (V), vanadium (IV) and vanadium (III) were surface complexation, which can be proved by FTIR analysis.

Abstract:Abstract Biochar is a pyrogenous, organic material synthesized through pyrolysis of different biomass (plant or animal waste). The potential biochar applications include: (1) pollution remediation due to high CEC and specific surface area; (2) soil fertility improvement on the way of liming effect, enrichment in volatile matter and increase of pore volume, (3) carbon sequestration due to carbon and ash content, etc. Biochar properties are affected by several technological parameters, mainly pyrolysis temperature and feedstock kind, which differentiation can lead to products with a wide range of values of pH, specific surface area, pore volume, CEC, volatile matter, ash and carbon content. High pyrolysis temperature promotes the production of biochar with a strongly developed specific surface area, high porosity, pH as well as content of ash and carbon, but with low values of CEC and content of volatile matter. This is most likely due to significant degree of organic matter decomposition. Biochars produced from animal litter and solid waste feedstocks exhibit lower surface areas, carbon content, volatile matter and high CEC compared to biochars produced from crop residue and wood biomass, even at higher pyrolysis temperatures. The reason for this difference is considerable variation in lignin and cellulose content as well as in moisture content of biomass. The physicochemical properties of biochar determine application of this biomaterial as an additive to improve soil quality. This review succinctly presents the impact of pyrolysis temperature and the type of biomass on the physicochemical characteristics of biochar and its impact on soil fertility.

Abstract:To investigate systematically the influence of pyrolysis temperature on properties and heavy metal adsorption potential of municipal sludge biochar, biophysical dried sludge was pyrolyzed under temperature varying from 500°C to 900°C. The biochar yield decreased with the increase in pyrolysis temperature, while the ash content retained mostly, thus transforming the biochars into alkaline. The structure became porous as the temperature increased, and the concentrations of surface functional group elements remained low. Despite the comparatively high content of heavy metal in the biochar, the leaching toxicity of biochars was no more than 20% of the Chinese standard. In the batch experiments of cadmium(II) adsorption, the removal capacity of biochars improved under higher temperature, especially at 800°C and 900°C even one order of magnitude higher than that of the commercial activated carbon. For both energy recovery and heavy metal removal, the optimal pyrolysis temperature is 900°C.

Abstract:Temperature greatly determines biochar's physicochemical characteristics during the pyrolysis of a biowaste. This study aimed to investigate how pyrolysis temperature alters the physicochemical characteristics of water hyacinth (WH) biochar as a soil amendment. WH biomass was slowly pyrolyzed at three temperatures (350, 550, and 750 °C) for 2 h. Results show that biochar yield lessened from 51.0 to 33.3% with a temperature rise. When pyrolysis temperature increased biochar's pH (9.24–11.2), electrical conductivity (28.0–44.7 mS cm −1 ), liming capacity (17.7–33.0% CaCO 3 equivalence), ash content (33.3–52.4%), available nutrients (Ca, Mg, K, P), surface area (1.1–29.8 m 2 g −1 ), pore volume, C/N ratio (15.9–20.3), and water holding capacity increased. However, C, H, N, H/C (0.89–0.11) and O/C (0.62–0.49) ratios, cation exchange capacity (CEC) (44.4–2.3 cmol + kg −1 ), and pore width decreased. Surface functional groups shrank when pyrolysis temperature increased. As the temperature rises, WH biochar becomes structured, porous, and recalcitrant. All WH biochar samples show high alkalinity, particularly developed at 550 °C and 750 °C could replace liming materials in soil acidity alleviation. Biochar produced at 350 °C and 550 °C could improve agricultural soil fertility and nutrient retention capacity due to the lower C/N ratio, high N content, and CEC. Biochar produced at 550°C and 750 °C can sequester carbon in the soil. Biochar developed at 750 °C be applied to amend soil physical properties due to its comparably high surface area and porosity. Hence, the thermal conversion of WH biowaste to biochar helps obtain suitable biochar properties for soil amendment.

Abstract:As a waste‐derived soil amendment with a long history, biochar has received extensive attention for its capability to improve soil fertility/health, remove or immobilize contaminants in soil, water and air, and mitigate climate change. With the aim of producing engineered biochars with excellent performances, new trends in biochar pyrolytic production and modification strategies have emerged. This review critically summarizes novel pyrolysis methods (e.g., microwave‐assisted pyrolysis, co‐pyrolysis and wet pyrolysis) and modification approaches (e.g., mineral modification, photocatalytic modification, electrochemical modification) with a focus on 1) the mechanisms involved in environmental remediation processes including soil immobilization, contaminant adsorption and catalytic oxidation, 2) effects of feedstock and pyrolysis conditions on physicochemical properties, 3) sustainability considerations in novel modification and pyrolysis strategies, and 4) the feasibility of extrapolating the results from wastewater treatment to soil remediation. It is argued that in order to achieve the maximum net environmental benefits, "greener" modification methods are warranted, and the risks associated with pyrolysis of contaminated feedstock in soil amendment and contaminant sorption can be minimized through various novel approaches (e.g., co‐pyrolysis). Furthermore, novel pyrolysis methods can be combined with emerging modification strategies to synthesize more "effective" biochars. Considering the similar aims of modification (e.g., increase surface area, introduce oxygen‐containing functional groups, increase aromaticity, etc.), the applicability of several novel approaches can be expanded from contaminant adsorption/degradation in the aqueous media to soil remediation/fertility improvement in future studies.

Abstract:Biochar’s ability to amend and remediate agricultural soil has been a growing interest, though the energy expenses from high-temperature pyrolysis deter the product’s use. Therefore, it is urgent to improve the pyrolysis efficiency while ensuring the quality of produced biochar. The present study utilized three types of feedstock (i.e., switchgrass, biosolid, and water oak leaves) to produce biochar via conventional slow pyrolysis and microwave pyrolysis at different temperature/energy input. The produced biochar was characterized and comprehensively compared in terms of their physiochemical properties (e.g., surface functionality, elemental composition, and thermal stability). It was discovered that microwave-mediated biochar was more resistant to thermal decomposition, indicated by a higher production yield, yet more diverse surface functional groups were preserved than slow pyrolysis-derived biochar. A nutrient (NO3-N) adsorption isotherm study displayed that microwave-mediated biochar exhibited greater adsorption (13.3 mg g−1) than that of slow pyrolysis-derived biochar (3.1 mg g−1), proving its potential for future applications. Results suggested that microwaves pyrolysis is a promising method for biochar production.

Abstract:Biochar has high potential for organic pollutant immobilization due to its powerful sorption capacity. Nevertheless, potential risks may exist when biochar-sorbed organic pollutants are bioavailable. A direct plant exposure assay in combination with an organic solvent extraction experiment was carried out in this study to investigate the bioavailability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with the application of pine needle biochars pyrolyzed under different temperatures (100, 300, 400, and 700 °C; referred as P100–P700 accordingly). Biochar reduced solvent extractability and plant uptake of PAHs including naphthalene (Naph), acenaphthene (Acen), phenanthrene (Phen), and pyrene (Pyr), especially for three- and four-ring PAHs (Phen and Pyr) with high-temperature biochar. Plant uptake assay validates with organic solvent extraction for bioavailability assessment. Sorption of PAHs to biochars reduced plant uptake of PAHs in roots and shoots by lowering freely dissolved PAHs. Aging process reduced the bioavailability of PAHs that were bound to biochar. High pyrolysis temperature can be recommended for biochar preparation for purpose of effectively immobilizing PAHs, whereas application of moderate-temperature biochar for PAH immobilization should concern the potential risks of desorption and bioavailability of PAHs.
