Abstract:In this work, we demonstrated a bottom-up growth of Ag@SiO2/Ag core-shell nanosphere arrays with tunable SiO2 interior insulator and the optimized surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate based on a nanostructure performed with both high sensitivity and large-area uniformity. Their morphological, structural, and optical properties were characterized, and the induced SERS activities were investigated theoretically by the FDTD simulation and experimentally using analyte molecules. An ultrathin SiO2 shell with tunable thickness can be synthesized pinhole-free by a chemical vapor deposition, working as an interior insulator between the Ag core and Ag out-layer coating. A detection limit as low as 10−12 M and an enhancement factor up to 3 × 107 were obtained, and the SERS signal was highly reproducible with small standard deviation. The method opened up a way to create a new class of SERS activity sensor with high-density ‘hot spots’, and it may play an important role in device design and the corresponding biological and food safety monitoring applications. Hybrid Metal-Insulator-metal Structures on Si Nanowires Array for Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering

Abstract:Surface enhanced Raman scattering（SERS）is an efficient technique to detect low concentration molecules.In this work,periodical silicon nanowires（Si NWs）integrated with metal-insulator-metal（MIM）layers are employed as SERS substrates.Laser interference lithography（LIL）combined with reactive ion etching（RIE）is used to fabricate large-area periodic nanostructures,followed by decorating the MIM layers.Compared to MIM disks array on Si surface,the SERS enhancement factor（EF）of the MIM structures on the Si NWs array can be increased up to 5 times,which is attributed to the enhanced electric field at the boundary of the MIM disks.Furthermore,high density of nanoparticles and nanogaps serving as hot spots on sidewall surfaces also contribute to the enhanced SERS signals.Via changing the thickness of the insulator layer,the plasmonic resonance can be tuned,which provides a new localized surface plasmon resonance（LSPR）characteristic for SERS applications.

Abstract:Close-packed Ag pyramidal arrays have been fabricated by using inverted pyramidal pits on Si as a template and used to generate plentiful and homogeneous surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) hot sites. The sharp nanotip and the four edges of the Ag pyramid result in strong electromagnetic field enhancement with an average enhancement factor (EF) of 2.84 × 107. Moreover, the features of the close-packed Ag pyramidal array can be well controlled, which allows SERS substrates with good reproducibility to be obtained. The relative standard deviation (RSD) was lower than 8.78% both across a single substrate and different batches of substrates.

Abstract:Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has drawn much research interest in the past decades as an efficient technique to detect low-concentration molecules. Among many technologies, which can be used to fabricate SERS substrates, laser ablation is a simple and high-speed method to produce large-area SERS substrates. This work investigates the angular texturing effect by dynamic laser ablation and its influence on SERS signals. By tuning the angle between the Si surface and laser irradiation, the distributions and sizes of laser induced hybrid micro/nano-structures are studied. By decorating with a silver film, plenty of hot spots can be created among these structures for SERS. It is found that when the incident laser angle is 15 degrees at the laser fluence of 16.0 J/cm(2), the SERS performance is well optimized. This work realizes antisymmetric distribution of nanoparticles deposited on Si surface, which provides a flexible tuning of the hybrid micro/nano-structures' fabrication with high controllability for practical applications. Abstract:Large-scale Au nanodisk arrays on Si substrate are successfully fabricated via x-ray interference lithography and followed by electron-beam vapor deposition. The Au nanodisk arrays exhibit a significant, uniform, and reproducible surface enhancement on Raman scattering signal, which enables the detection of R6G as low as 10(-8) M with an enhancement factor of 10(6). Importantly, the Au nanodisk arrays SERS-active substrates with uniformly high sensitivity also have high reproducibility and stability. The diameters of the nanodisks and the inter-disk distance can be simply optimized to obtain high enhancement in Raman signal by varying exposure time and development time in XIL process. The electric fields of the Au nanodisks with various diameters and inter-disk distance simulated by the finite difference time domain (FDTD) techniques further confirm that the Raman signal enhancement of Au nanodisks is determined by the diameters of nanodisks and the inter-disk distance of nanodisks. The Au/Ag double-layer bimetal nanodisk arrays are also fabricated which show a significant increase in the Raman signal enhancement than that of the Au nanodisk arrays. XIL nanofabrication appears to be a feasible approach to prepare uniform and reproducible SERS-active substrates with high sensitivity for practical SERS applications.

Abstract:AbstractA novel and efficient surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate has been presented based on Gold@silver/pyramidal silicon 3D substrate (Au@Ag/3D-Si). By combining the SERS activity of Ag, the chemical stability of Au and the large field enhancement of 3D-Si, the Au@Ag/3D-Si substrate possesses perfect sensitivity, homogeneity, reproducibility and chemical stability. Using R6G as probe molecule, the SERS results imply that the Au@Ag/3D-Si substrate is superior to the 3D-Si, Ag/3D-Si and Au/3D-Si substrate. We also confirmed these excellent behaviors in theory via a commercial COMSOL software. The corresponding experimental and theoretical results indicate that our proposed Au@Ag/3D-Si substrate is expected to develop new opportunities for label-free SERS detections in biological sensors, biomedical diagnostics and food safety.

Abstract:Two-dimensional crystals-based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates are a research hot spot in the realm of chemistry and biology. Herein, a novel hybrid substrate based on AuNPs/GaTe/Au-film is proposed and fabricated for SERS activity. Finite-difference time-domain numerical simulations demonstrate that the plasmonic coupling in the hybrid structure, particularly the LSPs coupling of AuNPs and Au-film, promotes an enhanced electric field and consequently, greatly enhances the Raman activity. Impressively, the enhancement factor of 3 × 10 5 and the limiting detection concentration of 10 −14 M have been achieved for the rhodamine 6G molecules, which are equivalent to the best results achieved from the patterned graphene substrates. Due to its simple structure, cost-effectiveness, good uniformity, reproducibility, and stability, it is expected that such a SERS substrate will open up a new way toward the ultrasensitive detection of molecules.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a high-performance surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate based on high-density ordered Ag@Al2O3 nanobowl arrays. By ion beam etching (IBE) the anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) and subsequent Ag coating, ordered Ag@Al2O3 nanobowl arrays were created on the Si substrate. Unlike the 'hot spots' generated between adjacent metallic nanostructures, the Ag@Al2O3 nanobowl introduced 'hot spots' on the metal boundary of its hemispherical cavity. Based on the analysis of SERS signals, the optimized SERS substrate of Ag@Al2O3 nanobowl arrays had both high sensitivity and large-area uniformity. A detection limit as low as 10(-10) M was obtained using chemisorbed p-thiocresol (p-Tc) molecules, and the SERS signal was highly reproducible with a small standard deviation. The method opens up a new way to create highly sensitive SERS sensors with high-density 'hot spots', and it could play an important role in device design and corresponding biological and food safety monitoring applications.
Developing highly reliable SERS substrates based on Ag grown on alumina nanomeshes anodized under 1 V for efficiently sensing Raman-active molecules

Abstract:We have developed silver-nanostructures grown on anodic alumina nanomesh (AAN) films to create new-type substrates for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). AAN with uniform thin sidewall of ∼ 5 nm was fabricated by anodizing Al sheets at 1 V in 6% H3PO4 solution. Subsequent AC electrochemical deposition of silver created an array of nanoparticles or nano-islands depending on growth time. The particle-island transition is non-monotonic evolution, since metal growth and dissolution compete in AC electrodeposition process. Systematic SERS study on various Ag-AAN films with trial probes of adenine solutions reveals collective contribution of electron-plasma oscillation and surface area of silver nanostructures in Raman enhancements. SERS signals are primarily contributed by surface area under excitation wavelength of 532 nm (away from plasmonic resonance). The average correlation coefficient between the SERS intensity and surface area was 0.85, indicating robust correlation. This value was reduced to 0.61 under excitation wavelength of 633 nm (closer to plasmonic resonance). Furthermore, increased Ag-deposition reduced the relative standard deviation of SERS intensities and thus improved both the uniformity and quality consistency of SERS substrates. Therefore, fabrication of SERS substrate with larger Ag surface area under similar SERS enhancement factors is suggested for high throughput in commercial sectors.

Si/TiO 2 /Ag Multistorey Structures with Interfacial Charge Transfer for a Recyclable Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Substrate

Abstract:In this work, highly ordered TiO2/Ag bilayer structures on p-type silicon (Si) wafers are prepared by photolithography and electrochemical self-assembly methods. The interfacial charge transfer (CT) of this Si/TiO2/Ag multistorey structure with a specially aligned work function is studied. This is important to deduce the interfacial electron migration behavior of SERS. The three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (3D FDTD) simulation is used to explore the combined CT–EM enhancement mechanism. The result shows that the electron movement under the CT mechanism can induce the resonance effect of free electrons to further improve EM performance. In addition, the effect of agglomerated Ag nanoparticle size distribution on the SERS property and the self-cleaning property of Si/TiO2/Ag multistorey structures is investigated. Finally, this unique structure of highly ordered Si/TiO2/Ag SERS substrate shows superior sensitivity, reproducibility, and stability. Rhodamine 6G (R6G) with trace concentrations as low as 10–15 M can be detected, and the EF is estimated to be about 8.9 × 1013. The relative standard deviation (RSD) at 1511 cm–1 is about 4.7%. Abstract:We introduce a simple and cost-effective approach for fabrication of effective surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates. It is shown that the as-fabricated substrates show excellent SERS effects in various probe molecules with high sensitivity, that is, picomolar level detection, and also good reliability. With a SERS enhancement factor beyond 108 and excellent reproducibility (deviation less than 5%) of signal intensity, the fabrication of the SERS substrate is realized on a four-inch wafer and proven to be effective in pesticide residue detection. The SERS substrate is realized first through the fabrication of quasi-periodic nanostructured silicon with dimension features in tens of nanometers using superaligned carbon nanotubes networks as an etching mask, after which a large amount of hot spots with nanometer gaps are formed through deposition of a gold film. With rigorous nanostructure design, the enhanced performance of electromagnetic field distribution for nanostructures is optimized. With the advantage of cost-effective large-area preparation, it is believed that the as-fabricated SERS substrate could be used in a wide variety of actual applications where detection of trace amounts is necessary.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection technique has gained much attention as a powerful analytical tool in these years. Nevertheless, the attention was mainly focused on the efficient scattering platform by structuring metals themselves, leading to the more complex platforms and simultaneous the higher cost. Herein, a new and simple strategy to prepare large-area, low-cost, high-performance SERS substrate is introduced. Ultra-thin semiconductor silicon (Si) film is used as the functional layer for the metallic nano-particles based meta-surface. During the SERS sensing process, the emergence of Si layer is observed to provide three key contributions: 1) to produce a maximal enhancement factor (EF) ~470% than that of the bare meta-surface, 2) to keep a higher spectral stability for the Raman signal, 3) to physically interdict the contact between the metal and the molecule. Moreover, the Si film's thickness is down to the scale close to electron's Bohr radius, indicating efficient electronic oscillations for the semiconductor material under electromagnetic excitation. The charge transfer behaviors between the molecules and the Si layer and metal nano-particles can also emerge. These findings could pave new insights on the surface-enhanced spectroscopy and hold applications on the high-performance, large-area, low-cost SERS sensing.

Abstract:As a noninvasive and label-free optical technique, Raman spectroscopy offers significant advantages in studying the structure and properties of biomacromolecules, as well as real-time changes in cellular molecular structure. However, its practical applications are hindered by weak scattering responses, low signal intensity, and poor spectral uniformity, which affect the subsequent accuracy of spectral analysis. To address these issues, we report a novel surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate based on a pyramidal pitted silicon (PPSi) array structure adhered with Au-shell Ag-core nanospheres (Au@Ag NSs). By preparing a highly uniform PPSi array substrate with controllable size and arrangement, and constructing SERS-active Au@Ag NSs on this substrate, a three-dimensional (3D) composite SERS substrate is realized. The enhancement performance and spectral uniformity of 3D composite SERS substrate were examined using crystal violet (CV) and Rhodamine 6G (R6G) molecules, achieving a minimum detectable concentration of R6G at 10 −9 M and the analytical enhancement factor (AEF) of 4.2 × 10 8 . Moreover, SERS detection of biological samples with varying concentrations of Staphylococcus aureus demonstrated excellent biocompatibility of the SERS substrate and enabled quantitative analysis of bacterial concentration ( R 2 = 99.7 %). Theoretical simulations using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) analysis were conducted to examine the electromagnetic field distribution of the three-dimensional SERS composite substrate, confirming its local electric field enhancement effect. These experimental and theoretical results indicate that the Au@Ag NSs/PPSi substrate with a regulable pyramidal pitted array is a promising candidate for sensitive, label-free SERS detection in medical and biotechnological applications.

Abstract:High-performance and high-stability surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates are urgently needed in the detection field, chemical engineering, etc. Ag nanoislands/Ag-V alloy films on polyimide (PI) have been designed and fabricated as high-sensitivity SERS substrates. The dependence of surface morphology, roughness, water contact angle, and contents of islands and films on SERS performance are systematically discussed. In addition, covering the surface of the annealed alloy films with a 12 nm Ag layer could improve the SERS performance of the alloy films by coupling enhancement of the electric field. The Ag layer/Ag nanoisland/Ag-V alloy films SERS substrates are capable of detecting rhodamine 6 G (R6G) solution at a consistency of 5 × 10 −13 mol/L. The low-cost, mass-producible Ag nanoisland/film prepared in this paper can be used as stable and sensitive SERS substrates.

Abstract:A facile method to prepare uniform and reproducible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates is presented. Quasi-spherical silver colloids prepared by microwave heating and wafer-scale uniform silicon nanowire (SiNW) arrays fabricated via wet chemical etching were united together as SERS substrates. The novel SERS substrates displayed stronger Raman enhancement than conventional silver colloids as well as outstanding uniformity and reproducibility in our experiments. In addition, it was found that the cross section of SiNW arrays possessed stronger enhancement activity than the front side. The enhancement effects of two adjacent SiNWs (as a simplification of SiNW arrays) were evaluated by the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method.

The ordered dendritic silver-copper on silicon substrate was fabricated through photolithography and electrodeposition. The performance of the structure as a SERS substrate was assessed using rhodamine 6G (R6G) as the probe molecule at concentrations ranging from 1.010-5 to 1.010-10 mol/L. Through optimization of the period length and deposition parameters, the substrate has shown an enhancement factor (EF) up to 107, demonstrating excellent SERS activity. We also discovered Cu-only substrate demonstrates similar performance. The proposed method provides new pathways for designing various alloyed SERS substrates.
Quantitative Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy for Field Detections Based on Structurally Homogeneous Silver-Coated Silicon Nanocone Arrays

Abstract:Practical application of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is greatly limited by the inaccurate quantitative analyses due to the measuring parameter's fluctuations induced by different operators, different Raman spectrometers, and different test sites and moments, especially during the field tests. Herein, we develop a strategy of quantitative SERS for field detection via designing structurally homogeneous and ordered Ag-coated Si nanocone arrays. Such an array is fabricated as SERS chips by depositing Ag on the template etching-induced Si nanocone array. Taking 4-aminothiophenol as the typical analyte, the influences of fluctuations in measuring parameters (such as defocusing depth and laser powers) on Raman signals are systematically studied, which significantly change SERS measurements. It has been shown that the silicon underneath the Ag coating in the chip can respond to the measuring parameters' fluctuations synchronously with and similar to the analyte adsorbed on the chip surface, and the normalization with Si Raman signals can well eliminate the big fluctuations (up to 1 or 2 orders of magnitude) in measurements, achieving highly reproducible measurements (mostly, <5% in signal fluctuations) and accurate quantitative SERS analyses. Finally, the simulated field tests demonstrate that the developed strategy enables quantitatively analyzing the highly scattered SERS measurements well with 1 order of magnitude in signal fluctuation, exhibiting good practicability. This study provides a new practical chip and reliable quantitative SERS for the field detection of real samples.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
