Abstract:Mercury (Hg) is a heavy metal with high toxicity and easy migration; it can be enriched through the food chain, and cause serious threats to the natural environment and human health. So, the development of a method that can be used to detect mercury ions (Hg2+) in the environment, in cells, and in organisms is very important. Here, a new 7-hydroxycoumarin-derived carbonothioate-based probe (CC-Hg) was designed and synthesized for detection of Hg2+. After addition of Hg2+, a large fluorescence enhancement was observed due to the formation of 7-hydroxyl, which reinforced the intramolecular charge transfer process. The CC-Hg probe had good water solubility and selectivity. Moreover, the probe was able to detect Hg2+ quantitatively over the concentration range 0-2 mu M and with a detection limit of 7.9 nM. Importantly, we successfully applied the probe to detect Hg2+ in water samples, in living cells, and in zebrafish. The experimental results demonstrated its potential value in practical applications.

Abstract:Using the Hg2+-induced desulfurization reaction of thiosemicarbazide derivative, we designed and synthesized a novel "turn on" coumarin-based fluorescent probe L with a simple structure for detecting mercury ion (II). Spectroscopy revealed that the probe responds selectively to mercury ions over other metal ions with marked fluorescence enhancement. Detection of Hg2+ was effective at pH 7.0-9.5, with high selectivity and significant effect in HeLa cells, human umbilical vein endothelial cells and Escherichia coli, but no cytotoxicity. This probe could be an ideal and practical Hg2+ probe with important biological significance. (C) 2013 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Mercury, as a highly toxic heavy metal, can cause very serious harm to human health and even death in severe cases. Therefore, we synthesized a novel ratiometric fluorescent probe for detecting mercury ions, with mercaptoethanol as the recognition receptor. Probe CMER could determine mercury ions in 0-1.6 μM and the detection limit is 7.6 nM. Moreover, CMER manifested a fast response for Hg2+ (within 5 s) and simultaneously observed that the color changed from light yellow to orange by naked eye. In addition to these preeminent spectral properties, the probe also had satisfactory bioimaging results in RAW 264.7 macrophage cells and zebrafish.

Abstract:In this work, a simple dichlororesorufin-based colorimetric and fluorescent probe R-Hg with the recognition receptor of carbon- othioate was designed, synthesized, and exploited to determine mercury ions in aqueous solution and living cells as well as in zebrafish. After a series of analytical tests, probe R-Hg showed some excellent characteristics, such as ultrasensitivity, high selectivity, and good water solubility. The probe solution exhibited a very large fluorescence enhancement (about 150-fold) upon addition of He2+. Additionally, probe R-Hg exhibited excellent sensitivity, which could quantificationally detect Hg2+ at the nanomolar level, and the detection limit was 0.49 nM. Moreover, probe R-Hg could be used as a "naked-eye" probe for monitoring Hg2+, because the color of its solution transformed remarkably from yellow into pink with the participation of Hg2+. Importantly, probe R-Hg has potential application value and has been successfully applied to the determination of He2+ in practical water samples and in living RAW 264.7 cells as well as in zebrafish as a bioimaging reagent.

Abstract:Mercury (II) ions are non-biodegradable and its abnormal accumulation in the human body through the food chain can cause various diseases. It is crucial to develop an analytical method with excellent performance to detect and monitor mercury ion in the environment, food and living creature. Fluorescent probe has attracted considerable attention due to its excellent properties (e.g., facile, real-time operation and low detection limit). Herein, we summarize the recent efforts to develop fluorescents probes for detecting mercury ions. This study highlights those strategies and approaches of probe design as well as the capability of the probe. Additionally, prospects for future research are proposed.

Abstract:We developed a new probe based on rhodamine B and 5-ferrocenyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole. The probe can be used to sensitive and selective fluorescent recognition of Hg2+ with good quantum yield. The fluorescence intensity was remarkably increased upon the addition of Hg2+ within 1 or 2min with about 27 fold enhancement. Additionally, the turn-on fluorescent probe with good membrane-permeable property was successfully applied to microscopic imaging for the detection of Hg2+ in HeLa cells. The probe facilitates also naked-eye detection of Cu2+ in aqueous solution.

Abstract:Since the accumulation of mercury (II) ions in the environment and ecosystem causes serious problems to environment and disease, the recognition of Hg2+ ions and its bio-imaging is of high importance. In sight of the advantages of fluorescence probes, a new probe (PMH) was facilely synthesized by incorporating phenylimidazole fluorophore and 3-methyl-2- benzothiazolinone hydrazone hydrochloride monohydrate. The PMH probe exhibited a ratiometric response for Hg2+ ions with fluorescence intensity increasing at 520 nm and decreasing at 445 nm simultaneously. The PMH probe interacted with Hg2+ ions in seconds with high optical stability and showed good selectivity over other metal ions. In addition, the probe has excellent biocompatibility and imaging performance in cells and zebrafish.

Abstract:A highly selectivity and senstivity fluorescent probe for Hg2+. A simple naphthalimide‐based fluorescent probe was designed and synthesized for the determination of mercury ion (Hg2+). The probe showed a noticeable fluorescence quenching response for Hg2+. When added with Hg2+, the fluorescence intensity of the probe at 560 nm was remarkably decreased with the color changed from yellow to colorless under ultraviolet (UV) light. The probe had a notable selectivity and sensitivity for Hg2+ and displayed an excellent sensing performance when detecting Hg2+ at low concentration (19.5 nM). The binding phenomenon between the probe and Hg2+ was identified by Job's method and high‐resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). Moreover, the probe was not only utilized to identify Hg2+ in real samples with satisfactory results (92.00%–110.00%) but also was successfully used for bioimaging in cells and zebrafish. The recognition mechanism has been verified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for the first time. All the results showed that the probe could be used as a potent useful tool for detection of Hg2+.

Abstract:As one of the most toxic heavy metals, mercury ion causes severe environmental and healthy problems. Hence, its sensing methods have been widely studied. Due to their unique advantages, such as high sensitivity, low cost and fast detection, fluorescent probes have been one of the most important sensing methods for mercury ion. The mercury ion could be coordinated with specific receptors of fluorescent probes. Such complexation causes the changes of photophysical properties and realizes highly selective mercury ion detection. Herein, fluorescent probes for mercury ion based on small molecules reported in recent years have been reviewed. The design principles of probe materials, as well as their sensing mechanisms and applications are summarized. The structure-property relationships are also elucidated. Finally, the development and prospect are foreseen in the field of mercury ion probes.

Abstract:A new Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer (ESIPT) based fluorescent probe for the detection of Hg2+ has been rationally designed and developed. Based on the specific reactivity of mercury-promoted hydrolysis, the probe exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity for mercury ions in almost pure aqueous solution (containing only 1% DMSO) with a low detection limit of 1.9 ppb. Abstract:Mercury is a highly toxic and non-essential element that is found in every corner of the globe. The small amount of mercury produced by various pathways eventually enters freshwater and marine ecosystems, circulating through the food chain (especially fish) and causing various environmental problems in aspects including plants, animals, and human. There are several traditional quantitative methods developed for mercury ions (II) analysis in water samples. However, due to the complexity of the detection process, high cost and strong technical expertise, it is difficult to detect mercury ions in real-time. Therefore, in recent years, a large number of researchers have developed small-molecule fluorescent probes for Hg ions detection. Fluorimetry has the advantages of convenient detection, short response time, high sensitivity and good selectivity. This review summarized the small-molecule fluorescent probes for mercuric ion detection developed in recent years according to the chemical structural classification, compared their performances and elaborated the mechanism. We hope that the review will help the researches for the designs of metal ions fluorescent probes and their applications with certain reference value.

Abstract:Mercury is currently widely used in industries which leads to various means of Hg(II) waste exposure and its accumulation in organisms will cause neurological damages. Thus, there is a great need for the design of probes or sensors with high sensitivity and selectivity for detecting and monitoring Hg(II) at physiological pH. Thus a novel and simple molecular probe P1 was prepared from 1,1'-(1,3-phenylene)-bis(2,4-pentanedionato) for sensing Hg(II) via chelation-enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) mechanism. The probe indicated a selectively fluorescent response to Hg(II) in aqueous media excited by the ultraviolet light of 254 nm. The recognition mechanism was further studied by semi-empirical AM1 and molecular mechanics MM+ methods in HyperChem 8.0. The calculation indicated a tetrahedron coordination geometry for Hg(II) and a chair-like configuration for the total molecule. The fluorescent images sensing Hg(II) in living mouse fibroblast cells by the probe were obtained by fluorescence microscope.

Abstract:A fluorescent probe RCHg based on a novel rectilinear pi-extended rhodol-coumarin hybrid dye has been designed and synthesized for the detection of Hg2+ ions. Via a specific Hg2+-promoted ring-opening and desulfurization cascade reaction, RCHg shows high selectivity and sensitivity for Hg2+ detection and with a detection limit down to the nanomolar range. Abstract:A water-soluble, biocompatible, and fluorescent chemosensor (1) for label-free, simple, and fast detection of mercury ions (Hg(2+)) in aqueous solutions and in HepG2 cells with high selectivity is reported herein. Chelation of 1 with Hg(2+) results in the disappearance of its fluorescence emission at 350 nm and the appearance of a new emission at 405 nm. Selectivity and interference studies indicated that 1 could be selectively chelated by Hg(2+) without interference from other metal ions. Insight into the mechanisms responsible for its fluorescence effect was gained from ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy. With these properties, 1 was successfully applied for imaging Hg(2+) in living cells and for removing Hg(2+) from river water. Moreover, we also constructed a simple device for fast and effective removal of Hg(2+) from contaminated liquid samples.

Abstract:Since mercury could accumulate along with the food chains and undermine environment and human health, development of efficient mercury detection tools in water samples, plants and living systems is of great significance. In this work, we designed a hemicyanine-based fluorescent probe HCYS for mercury detection. The probe exhibited distinct near-infrared fluorescence intensity. Based on the spin orbit coupling effect and heavy atom effect of Hg 2+ , a significant fluorescent change was exhibited since Hg 2+ chelated with the probe by inhibition of the intramolecular charge transfer process in HCYS . The limit of detection (LOD) was calculated to be 1.41 μM. Exploiting the benefits of fast response time (less than 1 min), high selectivity and noninvasively track capacity, the probe has been applied in biological systems. The solid results proved that the probe HCYS is a powerful tool for Hg 2+ imaging in living cells, zebrafish, pea spouts and water samples.
