Abstract:The exploration of environmentally friendly slow-release fertilizer (SRF) based on natural bio-polymers is of great importance in the development of modern agriculture and horticulture. Herein, a novel starch carbamate (SC) modified sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel (SC/SAH) was prepared utilizing as-synthesized SC and natural SA through the cationic ions crosslinking method and ultimately the corresponding slow-release fertilizer (SC/SAH-SRF) was successfully developed by immersing the dried SC/SAH matrix into saturated urea solution. Due to the low gelation temperature and high viscosity of the synthesized SC, the formed SC/SAH exhibits significantly enhanced properties including excellent water absorbency up to 8.02 g/g with considerable repeatability, abundant pore structure and high hydrophilicity compared with the neat SAH and natural starch based hydrogel (NS/SAH). Accordingly, the SC/SAH leads to higher urea loading amount ∼ 1.28 g/g. Importantly, the resultant SC/SAH-SRF also shows superior slow-release performance, yielding a cumulative urea release of only 61.6 % within 10 h and almost completely release >16 h in water, what's more, only 58.5 % of the urea releases within 25 days and exceeding 50 days for complete release in soil column assays. The slow-release of urea from SC/SAH-SRF well complies for the first-order kinetics and accomplishes via a non-Fickian diffusion process. Moreover, the pot experiment demonstrates that the SC/SAH-SRF has higher growth promotion role for the maize seedlings than those of others. Consequently, this work provides a novel strategy for preparing environmentally friendly SRF by blending modified starch and hydrogel.

Abstract:Ultrasound (US) assisted with Fenton (US-Fenton) reaction was developed to efficiently and greenly prepare starch nanoparticles (SNPs) that were employed as nanofillers to enhance gelatin (G) film properties. Compared to Fenton reaction alone, US-Fenton reaction significantly improved preparation efficiency and dispersion of SNPs (p < 0.05). An optimal US-Fenton reaction parameter (300 mM H2O2, ascorbic acid 55 mM, US 45 min) was found to prepare SNPs with uniform sizes (50-90 nm) and low molecular weight (Mn 7.91 x 105 Da). The XRD, FT-IR, and SAXS analysis revealed that the US-Fenton reaction degraded the amorphous and crystalline zones of starch from top to down, leading to the collapse of the original layered structure starch and the progressive formation of SNPs. The different sizes of SNPs were selected to prepare the composite films. The G-SNP3 film (with 50-90 nm SNPs) showed the most outstanding UV blocking, tensile, and barrier properties. Especially, the tensile strength of G-5%SNP3 film (containing 5 % SNPs) increased by 156 % and 6 % over that of G film and G5%SNP2 film (containing 5%SNPs with 100-180 nm), respectively. Therefore, the nanomaterial was promisingly prepared by the US-Fenton system and provided a strategy for designing and producing nanocomposite films.
Incorporating iron oxide nanoparticles in polyvinyl alcohol/starch hydrogel membrane with biochar for enhanced slow-release properties of compound fertilizers

Abstract:Biochar-based fertilizers show promise in enhancing nutrient utilization and soil health, but their slow-release performance remains a challenge. Herein, hydrogel membranes incorporating iron oxide nanoparticles within a polyvinyl alcohol and starch matrix (Fe/PVA/ST) were synthesized. These membranes were utilized to coat compound fertilizer particles, with biochar powder applied to the outer layer to form what is known as Fe/PVA/ST-BSRFs. The results revealed that Fe/PVA/ST-BSRFs exhibit markedly improved slow-release performance compared to both PVA/ST-BSRFs lacking iron nanoparticles and commercial compound fertilizers. Within a 30-day period, the cumulative leaching ratios of N, P, and K from Fe/PVA/ST-BSRFs with 0.75 % iron content were significantly lower compared to other tested fertilizers, with values of 22.87 %, 34.93 %, and 84.08 %, respectively. Furthermore, the incorporation of iron oxide nanoparticles into the PVA/ST membrane enhanced its swelling and water-retention properties without compromising its biodegradability. Mechanistic investigations revealed that the exceptional slow-release properties of Fe/PVA/ST-BSRFs stem from a combination of nutrient diffusion control outside the membrane and the loose control mechanism of the membrane. Pot tests demonstrated that Fe/PVA/ST-BSRFs effectively promoted the growth of chili plants while ensuring high utilization of N-P-K and improving the nutritional indices of chili fruits. Economic analysis further underscored the promising application prospects of Fe/PVA/ST-BSRFs.

Abstract:The porous structure and hydrophilicity of coating shells affect the nutrient controlled-release performance of castor oil-based (CO) coated fertilizers. In order to solve these problems, in this study, the castor oil-based polyurethane (PCU) coating material was modified with liquefied starch polyol (LS) and siloxane, and a new coating material with cross-linked network structure and hydrophobic surface was synthesized, and used it to prepare the coated controlled-release urea (SSPCU). The results demonstrated that the cross-linked network formed by LS and CO improved the density and reduced the pores on the surface of the coating shells. The siloxane was grafted on the surface of coating shells to improve its hydrophobicity and thus delayed water entry. The nitrogen release experiment indicated that the synergistic effects of LS and siloxane improved the nitrogen controlled-release performance of bio-based coated fertilizers. Nutrient released longevity of SSPCU with 7 % coating percentage reached >63 days. Moreover, the nutrient release mechanism of coated fertilizer was further revealed by the analysis of the release kinetics analysis. Therefore, the results of this study provide a new idea and technical support for development of efficient and environment-friendly bio-based coated controlled-release fertilizers.

Abstract:Over the past two decades, the development and commercialization of slow-release fertilizers (SRFs) have significantly advanced, with the primary aim of mitigating environmental issues associated with excessive fertilizer use. A range of methodologies, including chemical and physical reactions, incorporation into carriers with porous and layered structures, and coating techniques, have been explored and refined. On the other hand, global challenges such as drought and desertification further underscore the need for SRFs that not only control nutrient release but also improve soil moisture retention. This paper reviews the development and application of eco-friendly starch hydrogels as fertilizer carriers and water retention for SRFs, particularly starch-based superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) produced through grafting copolymerization with acrylamide. This review explores both scientific issues, such as the microstructures and releasing mechanisms of SAPs, and technical development, involving copolymerization technologies, multi-initialization processes, methods of loading fertilizer into hydrogel, etc. Starch, as both a biodegradable and renewable carbohydrate polymer, offers distinct advantages due to its excellent chemical stability and high reactivity. The fabrication techniques of SAPs have been developed from traditional batch polymerization in aqueous solutions to more efficient, solvent-free reactive extrusion. The benefits of SRFs based on SAPs encompass enhanced soil aeration, the prevention of soil deterioration, the minimization of water evaporation, environmental pollution control, reduction in plant mortality, and prolonged nutrient retention within soil. In this review, we summarize the current progress, identify limitations in existing technologies, and propose future research directions to further enhance the performance of starch-based SRFs.

Abstract:In this study, a method of preparing fertilizers with the fly ash from biomass power plants and the waste acid solution from flue gas desulfurization and denitrification was disclosed. In addition, the study also explored the effects of added fine particles, unburned biochar, and other commercial fertilizers on soil water retention and slow-release effect of fertilizers. The analysis was done by comparing the aggregation degrees of crystalline salt and the variations of the chemical bonds. The experimental results showed that the added fine particles could effectively increase the water absorption of fertilizers, which helped to improve soil water retention. Meanwhile, the fine particles could strengthen the special adsorption of basic compounds containing N, P, and other nutrients by biochar and enhance the slow-release effect of fertilizers. Although adding part commercial fertilizers weakened the water absorption of fertilizers slightly, it had only a relatively small effect on the aggregation of water-soluble crystalline salt on the surfaces of fine particles and biochar. Furthermore, the microwave was applied to promote the absorption of N by unburned biochar, during which only small amounts of volatile were released and lost. The experiments had confirmed that microwave irradiation could promote the agglomeration of biochar on crystalline salt effectively, thus enhancing the slow-release effect of crystalline salt in fertilizers. Finally, pot experiments demonstrated that the self-prepared fertilizer improved plant growth by its better water absorption and slow-release properties during the whole growth period, which had promising application potential as the slow-release fertilizer in the plant growth field.

Abstract:To improve the utilization of stover and fertilizer and also save water resources, a degradable slow‐release fertilizer of corn stover cellulose graft poly (acrylic acid‐potassium humate) (CSC‐g‐P(AA‐KHA)) was prepared using corn stover cellulose (CSC), acrylic acid (AA) and potassium humate (KHA) by aqueous solution polymerization. Characterization of CSC‐g‐P(AA‐KHA) with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques provided evidence for the successful preparation. The product prepared exhibited excellent water absorbency (792.89 g·g−1 and 72.69 g·g−1 in deionized water and 0.9 wt% NaCl solution, respectively) and enhanced soil's capacity of water holding and water retention. After 5 cycles, the water absorptivities of CSC‐g‐P(AA‐KHA) in deionized water and 0.9 wt% NaCl solution were 51.71% and 49.97% of their initial water absorption, respectively. The degradation rate of CSC‐g‐P(AA‐KHA) was 32.02% after 50 days. Soil column leaching test and pot experiment demonstrated the slow‐release effect and plant growth promotion of CSC‐g‐P(AA‐KHA). CSC‐g‐P(AA‐KHA) showed desirable application potential in agriculture and is expected to become a functional fertilizer that integrates water absorbing, water‐holding and slow‐release properties.

Abstract:A slow-release fertilizer is important to improve soil conditions and enhances food security through continuous plant supply. With urea as a nitrogen source, kaolin as a carrier, acrylic acid as a reaction monomer, potassium persulfate as an initiator, N, N '- methylene bisacrylamide as a crosslinking agent, under the action of cyclohexane and sorbitan monostearate, kaolin based slow-release fertilizer was synthesized by reverse suspension method for the first time. The optimum conditions for the synthesized polymer were 0.6 g kaolin, 2 g urea and 80 °C temperature. The maximum water absorption capacity of the slow-release fertilizer was as high as 219.75 g/g. The water retention performance lasted for at least 10 days, and the slow-release property lasted for at least 28 days. The release of nitrogen content was slow and stable. The FTIR analysis indicated that the cross-linking occurred between kaolin, urea, and resin meanwhile, the SEM analysis supported that the product had a special network structure with a rough and porous surface. TGA analysis confirmed the stability of the kaolin-based slow-release fertilizer. The findings fully validated that the synthesis method of slow-release fertilizer was feasible and has the potential to be a popular commercialized product be popularized in areas lacking water or fertilizer.

Abstract:Nitrogen (N) losses from conventional N fertilizers contribute to environmental degradation and low N use efficiency. Highlighting the need for slow-release fertilizers (SRFs) to mitigate these problems, this study aims to develop slow-release N fertilizers using starch-grafted-poly[(acrylic acid)-co-acrylamide] based nanoclay polymer composites (NCPCs) and investigate their efficacy for slow N delivery in soil. Three types of NCPCs, NCPC(A) (poly [(acrylic acid)-co-acrylamide]), NCPC(W) (wheat starch-grafted-poly[(acrylic acid)-co-acrylamide), and NCPC(M) (maize starch-grafted-poly[(acrylic acid)-co-acrylamide) were prepared and characterized using FTIR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. N-release behaviour of the products was assessed under two distinct soils, i.e., Assam (Typic Hapludults, pH 4.2) and Delhi (Typic Haplustepts, pH 7.9) soils. Additionally, the effects of varying soil moisture and temperature levels on N release were studied in the Assam soil. The N-release kinetics of the synthesized fertilizers were assessed using zero-order, first-order, Higuchi, and Korsmeyer−Peppas models. Degradability of the NCPCs was evaluated by measuring evolved CO2–C under various soil conditions as an indicator of microbial degradation. The results indicated that NCPC fertilizers significantly slowed down the release of N compared to urea. According to the R2 values obtained, it was evident that the first-order kinetic model most accurately describes the N release from both urea and NCPC-based N fertilizers in the studied soils. Among the formulations, NCPC(A) exhibited the lowest N release (42.94–53.76%), followed by NCPC(M) (51.05–61.70%), NCPC(W) (54.86–67.75%), and urea (74.33–84.27%) after 21 days of incubation. The rate of N release was lower in the Assam soil compared to the Delhi soil, with higher soil moisture and temperature levels accelerating the release. Starch addition improved the biodegradability of the NCPCs, with NCPC(W) showing the highest cumulative CO2-C evolution (18.18–22.62 mg g−1), followed by NCPC(M) (15.54–20.97 mg g−1) and NCPC(A) (10.89–19.53 mg g−1). In conclusion, NCPC-based slow-release fertilizers demonstrated a more gradual N release compared to conventional urea and the inclusion of starch enhanced their degradability in the soil, which confirms their potential for sustainable agricultural applications. However, soil properties and environmental factors influenced the N release and degradation rates of NCPCs.

Abstract:Biopolymer-based slow-release fertilizers (SRFs) have attracted increasing interest because of their environmental benefits. Herein, a hydrophobic thermoplastic lignin with favorable film formation properties was synthesized through simple crosslinking followed by esterification reactions. The chemical structure, glass transition temperature, and hydrophobicity were determined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and contact angle studies. The newly synthesized esterified crosslinked sodium lignosulfonate (ECSL) enables the encapsulation of urea via a solvent-free coating method to prepare SRFs because of its appropriate glass transition temperature (Tg) and excellent film formation properties. The ECSL-based SRF released only 86.9% of the encapsulated urea within 44 d, which is superior to most lignin-based SRFs in previous studies. The release rate can also be tuned by adjusting the ECSL ratio. The synthesis of hydrophobic lignin biocomposites with suitable Tgs for film formation resolves the bottleneck of using these types of non-thermoplastic polymers (e.g., lignin) for SRFs. This study not only maximizes the value of biowaste lignin but also offers a non-paradigm approach toward low-cost SRFs for sustainable agriculture.

Abstract:Using slow-release fertilizer is one of the sustainable strategies to improve the effectiveness of fertilizers and mitigate the environmental pollution caused by excess usage of fertilizer. In this study, a slow-release urea fertilizer with water retention and photosensitivity properties was prepared by a two-step method. It was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy and an infrared camera. This fertilizer can prolong the release period of urea, improve water-retention capacity of soil, and carry out photothermal conversion under illumination. Comparing four release kinetics models, the Ritger–Peppas model was the best fitting model for releasing behavior in soil, and diffusion followed the Fickian mechanism. The application of fertilizer on winter wheat was carried out to intuitively evaluate the fertilizer's effects on promoting plant growth and resisting water stress. Thus, this study provides a new strategy for improving fertilizer utilization rate and maintaining soil moisture, which will be beneficial for sustainable agriculture.

Abstract:The inherent limitations of Cornstarch (CS) and Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) membranes, such as brittleness, fragility, and water solubility, limit their use in controlled-release fertilizers. This study reports on the synthesis of crosslinked CMC/CS-20-E composite membranes using the casting technique, with epichlorohydrin (ECH) as the crosslinking agent in an acidic environment to crosslink CS and CMC. The synthesized composite film demonstrates remarkable water resistance, as evidenced by the insignificant alteration in its morphology and structure post 72 h of water immersion. Its flexibility is reflected in its capacity to endure knotting and bending, with an elongation at break reaching 78.1 %. Moreover, the degradation rate surpasses 90 % within a span of seven days. The CMC/CS-20- E -x-urea controlled-release fertilizer was subsequently produced using a layer-by-layer self-assembly technique, where urea particles were incorporated into the crosslinked composite solution. This CMC/CS-20- E -x-urea controlled-release fertilizer displayed superior controlled-release performance over a duration of seven days when juxtaposed with pure urea. In particular, the CMC/CS-20-E-3 %-urea controlled-release fertilizer showed a cumulative release rate of 84 % by the seventh day. The controlled-release fertilizers developed in this study offer a promising strategy for creating eco-friendly options that are crucial for fertilizing crops with short growth cycles.

A biodegradable multifunctional pectin-montmorillonite fertilizer coating: Controlled-release, water-retention and soil-cementation

Abstract:Coated fertilizers have been widely used to improve fertility in barren land. However, improving soil structure and water-retention capacity is also essential for arid and semi-arid areas with sandy soils to promote crop growth. Most currently available coated fertilizers rarely meet these requirements, limiting their application scope. Therefore, this study "tailored" pectin-montmorillonite (PM) multifunctional coatings for arid areas, featuring intercalation reactions and nanoscale entanglement between pectin and montmorillonite via hydrogen bonding and electrostatic and van der Waals forces. Notably, PM coatings have demonstrated an effective "relay" model of action. First, the PM-50 coating could act as a "shield" to protect urea pills, increasing the mechanical strength (82.12 %). Second, this coating prolonged the release longevity of urea (<0.5 h to 15 days). Further, the remaining coating performed a water-retention function. Subsequently, the degraded coating improved the soil properties. Thus, this coating facilitated the growth of wheat seedlings in a simulated arid environment. Moreover, the cytotoxicity test, life cycle assessment, and soil biodegradation experiment showed that the PM coating exhibited minimal environmental impact. Overall, the "relay" model of PM coating overcomes the application limitations of traditional coated fertilizers and provides a sustainable strategy for developing coating materials in soil degradation areas.

Abstract:Despite the non-biodegradable petrochemical polymers-coated controlled-release fertilizers have revolutionarily promoted the agricultural production, more researches should be devoted to developing the biodegradable starch films-packaged controlled-release fertilizers. To inform the development of the starch films-packaged controlled-release fertilizers, the water-repellent ability and the controlled-release characteristic of the starch films need to be enhanced. Here, the densified starch/PBAT composite films-packaged controlled-release fertilizers (DSCFs) with the excellent water tolerance, the superior controlled-release performance and the low film materials content (1–2 %) were fabricated using the simple and solvent-free process. The significantly reduced water vapor transmissions (1-fold) and the enhanced nutrient release longevities (20–100 days) can be flexibly regulated by adjusting the PBAT contents and the film thicknesses. To fast predict the nutrient release longevity, the prediction model between the longer nutrient release longevity at 25 °C water and the accelerated longevity at 40 °C water was established by the response surface methodology. The controlled-release mechanism was clarified by the three-dimensional computerized tomography scanning technology: The smaller and lesser micropores and the densified cross-linked network of the starch/PBAT films with the increasing PBAT content can effectively resist the water into and the dissolved nutrient out of the DSCFs films, hence improving the controlled-release characteristic. Furthermore, the starch/PBAT films can be biodegraded in the soil environment to reduce the residual film contamination. The dramatically increased rice yield (71.75 %) showed the reliable practical application value of the DSCFs. The development of the biodegradable DSCFs was benefit to foster the end-user confidence in the low-film-content controlled-release fertilizers.

Abstract:Encapsulation through polymeric membranes to control the release rate of fertilizers can reduce fertilizer's losses and minimize environmental pollution. A biodegradable starch/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) blend film for coating the soluble granular fertilizer has been prepared. The influence of the blending ratio of starch/PVA and the content of formaldehyde on the properties of the film has been investigated. The membrane (starch:PVA=7:3, crosslinked by formaldehyde content:10 wt%) structure was observed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared absorption spectra (FTIR), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The XRD results shows that the crystal structure of PVA was changed after being crosslinked with starch, whose vice-bond was broken and crystal was destroyed. The FTIR explores the starch was linked with PVA by chemical binding the crosslinking reaction results in an improvement of compatibility of the starch/PVA blend films. The AFM results show that the films’ surface became level and smooth due to the crosslinking reaction with the application of formaldehyde. The starch/PVA blend films could biodegrade in the soil environment.

Abstract:To enhance utilization of waste straw and improve fertilizer efficiency, a novel semi-interpenetrating polymer network fertilizer (MSP-g-AA/PVA-APP) synthesized from straw cellulose and linear polymer was prepared by solution polymerization. The ammonium polyphosphate (APP) was introduced to supply nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients. The prepared materials were characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The water absorbency and slow-release behavior of MSP-g-AA/PVA-APP were also studied. The results indicated that MSP-g-AA/PVA-APP exhibited excellent water absorbency of 681.3 g/g in distilled water and enhanced the water retention capacity of soil. The cumulative N and P release rates of MSP-g-AA/PVA-APP were 55.1 % and 47.3 % after 30 days in soil, respectively. The effect of MSP-g-AA/PVA-APP on growth of wheat was studied, and the results show that the application products could facilitate the growth of wheat. It could be concluded that the product with water retention and slow-release property, being low costs and friendly to environment, had great potential for application in agricultural.

Abstract:To manufacture high bio-content degradable polyurethane-coated fertilizer, the co-liquefaction of corn straw and starch was carried out to convert more biomass into bio-polyol so as to substitute petroleum-based polyol. The effect of the corn straw to starch ratio on liquefaction behavior was mainly investigated by monitoring acid value, hydroxyl value, and liquefaction rate. Both chemical structures and properties of bio-polyols and their coatings were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), etc. The results indicated that adding a certain amount of starch to corn straw for co-liquefaction could contribute to a higher hydroxyl content of bio-polyol than that from sole biomass. Compared to molecular weight, the hydroxyl value was a more significant index to ensure coating quality. The incorporation of starch segments to bio-polyol led to good thermal stability, limited residual small molecules, and high crosslinking density of the coating. The controlled-release ability of coated urea prepared by co-liquefied bio-polyol was better than that of corn-straw-based bio-polyol, and the optimal ratio of corn straw to starch was 3:1. Overall, this study provides a new route to fabricate corn straw as a cost-effective and degradable coating with good controlled-release properties, which benefits solid biomass recycling.

Abstract:To enhance the effectiveness of fertilizers, a novel double-coated multifunctional slow-release fertilizer (DMSRF) was developed using urea as the core, ethyl cellulose (EC) as inner coating and cellulose-based superabsorbent polymer (cellulose-SAP) adsorbing biochemical inhibitors dicyandiamide (DCD) and thiourea as outer coating. The cellulose-SAP was synthesized by acid-pretreated cellulose grafted acrylic acid and acrylamide, and was characterized by FTIR, TGA and C<sup>13</sup>-NMR. The water absorbency, water-retention and adsorption for DCD and thiourea of cellulose-SAP were studied. The cellulose-SAP not only showed excellent water absorbency and water-retention capacity of soil, but could significantly adsorb biochemical inhibitors. In soil, compared with urea, the DMSRF exhibited a steady release behavior for a period longer than one month. In contrast with the coated materials un-adsorbed biochemical inhibitors, the DMSRF could control the nitrate content to a lower level. The study showed that the DMSRF not only has the functions of water retention and slow-release, but also inhibits the conversion of ammonium nitrogen to nitrate nitrogen.

Abstract:In this study, a novel type of slow-release fertilizer (SRF) was synthesized through lignin-based microcapsules. K2HPO4 and urea were coated by lignin and formaldehyde to prepare microcapsules of NPK compound SRF. The slow-release performance was measured by determining the NPK contents in water solution and soil column leaching. The release amounts of N, P and K after 5 days were 95.39, 95.28 and 96.75% in water, and 83.35, 96.62 and 90.75% in soil, respectively. The properties of SRF were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry and scanning electron microscopy. NPK release from the SRF was promoted by higher temperature and acid environment, but inhibited by alkaline environment. The first order kinetics equation provides the best correlation to describe nutrient release characteristics. The results indicated that SRF have good slow-release properties and are cost-saving and environment-friendly, and thus can efficiently improve the utilization efficiency of fertilizers in agricultural production.

Abstract:Chemical fertilizer has become a necessary condition for increasing the production and income of agricultural products in modern agriculture. However, excessive fertilization and fertilizer leakage could cause environmental pollution. To improve the utilization rate of agricultural fertilizers and reduce environmental pollution, the degradability of slow‐release fertilizers (SRFs) has become a research hotspot. In this work, a double‐layer coating material of slow‐release fertilizer was fabricated using low‐cost polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and methylcellulose (MC) as the inner coating materials, and attapulgite was doped into super absorbent polymer poly acrylic acid (PAA) and polyacrylamide (PAM) grafted natural biodegradable lignin as the outer coating materials. We investigated the chemical structures, mechanical properties, hydrophilic properties, and water retention properties of the double‐layer coating material coated on the surface of urea particles, and optimized the synthesis parameters to obtain the best water absorption properties of the outer layer water absorbent. Simultaneously, urea release was evaluated in dissolution experiments. The results show that at the PVA concentration of 5 wt% and the MC addition amount of 2.0 g, the performance indicators of the inner coating liquid were better than other contents. At the same time, more urea molecules (>30 days) were released in the single‐layer and double‐coated fertilizers, and the cumulative release rates of urea molecules were 92.36% and 85.10%, respectively. Therefore, this work provides research ideas for the preparation of double‐coated slow‐release fertilizers, which can improve soil water retention and fertilizer utilization.
