Abstract:To manufacture high bio-content degradable polyurethane-coated fertilizer, the co-liquefaction of corn straw and starch was carried out to convert more biomass into bio-polyol so as to substitute petroleum-based polyol. The effect of the corn straw to starch ratio on liquefaction behavior was mainly investigated by monitoring acid value, hydroxyl value, and liquefaction rate. Both chemical structures and properties of bio-polyols and their coatings were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), etc. The results indicated that adding a certain amount of starch to corn straw for co-liquefaction could contribute to a higher hydroxyl content of bio-polyol than that from sole biomass. Compared to molecular weight, the hydroxyl value was a more significant index to ensure coating quality. The incorporation of starch segments to bio-polyol led to good thermal stability, limited residual small molecules, and high crosslinking density of the coating. The controlled-release ability of coated urea prepared by co-liquefied bio-polyol was better than that of corn-straw-based bio-polyol, and the optimal ratio of corn straw to starch was 3:1. Overall, this study provides a new route to fabricate corn straw as a cost-effective and degradable coating with good controlled-release properties, which benefits solid biomass recycling.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to improve the bio - content and controllable - release performance of biomass - based polyurethane - coated fertilizers. Specifically, researchers prepare bio - polyols with high bio - content through the co - liquefaction of corn stalks and starch to replace petroleum - based polyols, and then prepare polyurethane - coated fertilizers with controllable - release characteristics. The focus of the research is to explore the influence of the ratio of corn stalks to starch on the co - liquefaction behavior and product properties, aiming to provide a new approach for preparing highly bio - content degradable polyurethane coatings from agricultural wastes. ### Main Objectives: 1. **Improve Biomass Utilization Efficiency**: By optimizing the co - liquefaction process of corn stalks and starch, increase the conversion rate of biomass to bio - polyols, thereby increasing the bio - content of the final product. 2. **Improve Coating Properties**: Study the influence of different ratios of corn stalks and starch on the acid value, hydroxyl value, molecular weight and viscosity of bio - polyols to obtain the best coating materials. 3. **Enhance the Controllable - Release Ability of Fertilizers**: By preparing polyurethane coatings with high bio - content, achieve precise controlled - release of fertilizers, improve fertilizer utilization rate and reduce environmental pollution. ### Research Methods: - **Co - liquefaction Reaction**: Use corn stalks and starch to carry out a co - liquefaction reaction under the action of a catalyst to prepare bio - polyols. - **Coating Preparation**: Mix the prepared bio - polyols with raw materials such as isocyanates and form a polyurethane coating on the surface of urea particles through spraying technology. - **Performance Characterization**: Characterize the chemical structure and performance of bio - polyols and their coatings through various analytical means (such as FTIR, GPC, TGA, etc.). ### Key Findings: - **Co - liquefaction Effect**: As the proportion of starch increases, the co - liquefaction rate gradually increases. When the ratio of corn stalks to starch is 3:1, the co - liquefaction rate reaches 82.0%. - **Properties of Bio - polyols**: The introduction of starch significantly increases the hydroxyl value of bio - polyols while reducing the acid value, which helps to improve the quality of the coating. - **Coating Properties**: The prepared polyurethane coating has good thermal stability and cross - linking density, and its controlled - release performance is better than that of the coating prepared from single corn - stalk - based bio - polyols. Through these studies, the paper provides theoretical and technical support for efficiently preparing highly bio - content degradable polyurethane - coated fertilizers from agricultural wastes, which is helpful for promoting the resource utilization of agricultural wastes and environmental protection.
