Abstract:Amine-terminated seventh generation dendrimers (G7-NH2) were synthesised and employed to investigate the interior and exterior template processes for the preparation of copper particles. Ultra-violet spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy were used to characterise the absorption properties of the G7-NH2(Cu2+)n complexes and the morphology of G7-NH2(Cu)n composite particles, respectively. Unlike the case where dendrimers with hydroxyl end-groups are used, copper particles could be prepared by exterior template process. Both the size of the copper particles and their tendency to aggregation increased as the Cu2+/G7-NH2 molar ratio increased. The copper particles were stable under oxygen-free conditions and could easily be oxidised to G7-NH2(Cu2+)n complex ions in the presence of oxygen.
One-step synthesis of low-dimensional copper-based nanomaterials with intrinsic antioxidant properties

Abstract:Copper nanomaterials have remarkable application potential in electronic devices, catalysis, biological materials, and other fields, but their easy oxidation characteristics have become a problem in their practical application. Many antioxidant technologies have been developed. However, these technologies are usually accompanied by changes in physicochemical properties, complicated operations, and high costs. Here, we describe a method for simultaneously achieving controllable morphology synthesis and antioxidative preparation of copper nanomaterials through a single solvothermal reaction in a polar organic solvent environment with formate groups. The stability of one-step copper nanomaterials in different environments is monitored and compared with traditional copper nanomaterials. Notably, the two-dimensional copper nanomaterial Cu NSs-FA prepared by one-step method has a low initial resistance of 48 × 10−3 Ω/sq, and the resistance only rises to 221 × 10−3 Ω/sq after treatment in a harsh alkaline environment for 12 h, which is comparable to that of ordinary Cu NSs (379 ×10−3 Ω/sq). The ratio reflects good environmental stability. This antioxidation strategy, which is suitable for a variety of copper nanomaterials, is simple to operate and has low cost, showing broad prospects in the practical application of copper nanomaterials.

Abstract:Owing to its high thermal and electrical conductivities, its ductility and its overall non-toxicity<a href="#ref-CR1">1</a>,<a href="#ref-CR2">2</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-020-2783-x#ref-CR3">3</a>, copper is widely used in daily applications and in industry, particularly in anti-oxidation technologies. However, many widespread anti-oxidation techniques, such as alloying and electroplating<a href="/articles/s41586-020-2783-x#ref-CR1">1</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-020-2783-x#ref-CR2">2</a>, often degrade some physical properties (for example, thermal and electrical conductivities and colour) and introduce harmful elements such as chromium and nickel. Although efforts have been made to develop surface passivation technologies using organic molecules, inorganic materials or carbon-based materials as oxidation inhibitors<a href="#ref-CR4">4</a>,<a href="#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="#ref-CR6">6</a>,<a href="#ref-CR7">7</a>,<a href="#ref-CR8">8</a>,<a href="#ref-CR9">9</a>,<a href="#ref-CR10">10</a>,<a href="#ref-CR11">11</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-020-2783-x#ref-CR12">12</a>, their large-scale application has had limited success. We have previously reported the solvothermal synthesis of highly air-stable copper nanosheets using formate as a reducing agent<a href="/articles/s41586-020-2783-x#ref-CR13">13</a>. Here we report that a solvothermal treatment of copper in the presence of sodium formate leads to crystallographic reconstruction of the copper surface and formation of an ultrathin surface coordination layer. We reveal that the surface modification does not affect the electrical or thermal conductivities of the bulk copper, but introduces high oxidation resistance in air, salt spray and alkaline conditions. We also develop a rapid room-temperature electrochemical synthesis protocol, with the resulting materials demonstrating similarly strong passivation performance. We further improve the oxidation resistance of the copper surfaces by introducing alkanethiol ligands to coordinate with steps or defect sites that are not protected by the passivation layer. We demonstrate that the mild treatment conditions make this technology applicable to the preparation of air-stable copper materials in different forms, including foils, nanowires, nanoparticles and bulk pastes. We expect that the technology developed in this work will help to expand the industrial applications of copper.

Abstract:This study investigates the stability against oxidation and aggregation of a group of plasmonic copper nano and micro structures. The stabilities were validated through studies on the structures for changes to crystallinity as well as optical absorbance. We reveal interesting mechanisms that lead to remarkable stabilities against the two phenomena, providing avenues for stable particle design. Out of all the candidate plasmonic metals, copper has noteworthy optical characteristics and is also economically favourable for use. However, the stability of plasmonic copper nanomaterials against the loss of the plasmonic property is a setback. The present work is on the synthesis of oxidation‐stable copper micro/nanoparticles (CuMps/NPs) at ambient conditions with chosen precursors, antioxidizing agents, polymeric capping agents and chelating ligands. The Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) response of the synthesized Cu structures and their morphological analyses are studied. XRD data revealed changes in crystal structure such as crystallite sizes, lattice distortions and dislocation densities as a result of variations in the synthesis conditions. We present from these analyses micro/nanostructures of oxidation‐stable plasmonic Cu. The validation of the aggregation and oxidation stabilities of the different synthesized samples make them a worthy choice for multiple plasmonic applications, along with showing the synthesis protocols as viable approaches for achieving such structures with a markedly increased shelf life.

Abstract:Copper nanoparticles possess unique physical and chemical properties; however, their application is often restricted, owing to their tendency to oxidize. In this work, we prepared copper nanoparticles with enhanced oxidative stability via a simple and low-cost method, where a modified starch was used as an environmentally friendly reducing agent and biocompatible polyethylenimine was used as a stabilizer. The prepared copper nanoparticles could be stored in air for at least 6 months without any oxidation in a dried state. Interestingly, our synthesis could even be performed at room temperature with a longer reaction time. We used various characterization methods to study the reaction mechanism. The prepared copper nanoparticles were further uniformly doped into an agar film, and this composite showed excellent bacterial killing efficiency, owing to the antibacterial properties of the copper nanoparticles. Our composite film shows potential for various clinical applications, such as wound dressing materials.

Abstract:Metallic core–shell nanostructures have inspired prominent research interests due to their better performances in catalytic, optical, electric, and magnetic applications as well as the less cost of noble metal than monometallic nanostructures, but limited by the complicated and expensive synthesis approaches. Development of one-pot and inexpensive method for metallic core–shell nanostructures’ synthesis is therefore of great significance. A novel Cu network supported nanoporous Ag-Cu alloy with an Ag shell and an Ag-Cu core was successfully synthesized by one-pot chemical dealloying of Zr-Cu-Ag-Al-O amorphous/crystalline composite, which provides a new way to prepare metallic core–shell nanostructures by a simple method. The prepared nanoporous Ag-Cu@Ag core-shell alloy demonstrates excellent air-stability at room temperature and enhanced oxidative stability even compared with other reported Cu@Ag core-shell micro-particles. In addition, the nanoporous Ag-Cu@Ag core-shell alloy also possesses robust antibacterial activity against E. Coli DH5α. The simple and low-cost synthesis method as well as the excellent oxidative stability promises the nanoporous Ag-Cu@Ag core-shell alloy potentially wide applications.
Enhanced Oxidation-Resistant and Conductivity in MXene Films with Seamless Heterostructure

Abstract:MXene-based films have garnered significant attention for their remarkable electrical and mechanical properties. Nevertheless, the practical application of MXene is impeded by its intrinsic instability caused by spontaneous oxidation. The traditional anti-oxidative strategies frequently lead to a compromise in stability, electrical conductivity, and mechanical properties. In this study, a novel approach is proposed involving metal nano-armoring, wherein a copper layer with nano thickness is deposited onto MXene film surfaces to establish a uniform and seamless heterogeneous interface (MXene@Cu). The precise tunability and uniformity of this heterostructure are consistently demonstrated through both theoretical calculations and experimental results. The MXene@Cu films exhibit exceptional electrical conductivity of 1.17 × 106 S m-1, electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness of 77.1 dB, and tensile strength of 43.4 MPa. More importantly, this heterostructure significantly improves MXene's stability against oxidation. After exposure to air for 30 days, the resultant MXene@Cu films exhibit a remarkable conductivity retention of 72.0%, significantly exceeding that of pristine MXene films (44.3%). This scalable synthesis approach holds significant promise for electronic device applications, particularly in electromagnetic shielding and thermal management.
Antioxidative Effect of Lactic Acid-Stabilized Copper Nanoparticles Prepared in Aqueous Solution

Abstract:Copper nanoparticles are an alternative for the currently used silver and gold nanoparticles in inkjet printing of conductive patterns because of the low cost and high electrical conductivity. However, a serious impediment to using copper nanoparticles for conductive inks is their spontaneous oxidation. This paper describes a simple, large-scale and high-throughput (0.2 M) process for the synthesis of copper nanoparticles in aqueous solution at room temperature in a short reaction period. The well-dispersed antioxidative copper pastes were prepared by dispersing the nanoparticles in an ethanol solution of lactic acid, and then depositing on glass slides. The resistivity of the conductive copper film was 14.0 ± 4.5 μΩ cm after annealing at 200 °C for 30 min in nitrogen, which was about eight times of the resistivity of bulk copper (1.7 μΩ cm). The copper nanoparticles and films were characterized by TEM, UV-vis, SEM, XRD and XPS. Lactic acid-stabilized copper nanoparticles showed relatively better disperse stability and resistance to oxidation than the other carboxylic acids. Furthermore, the copper film after annealing at 200 °C for 30 min in nitrogen showed antioxidative characteristics. It was experimentally proven that lactic acid could react with the copper oxides surrounding copper nanoparticles to form copper lactate, which was then reduced to copper in the annealing process.

Abstract:Certain bimetallic nanocrystals (NCs) possess promising catalytic properties for electrochemical energy conversion. Herein, we report a facile method for the one-step synthesis of porous dendritic PtNi NCs in aqueous solution at room temperature that contrasts with the traditional multistep thermal decomposition approach. The dendritic PtNi NCs assembled by interconnected arms are efficient catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction. This direct and efficient method is favorable for the up-scaled synthesis of active catalysts used in electrochemical applications.
2D PdCu Alloy Nanodendrites Manifest Effective Peroxidase-Like Activity Against Biofilms

Abstract:Noble metal nanomaterials with peroxidase-like catalytic activity have received great interest lately for their potential applications in biomedicine and environmental protection; however, it is still challenging to achieve high catalytic efficiency despite enormous efforts. In this work, a novel but simple route was developed to synthesize 2D PdCu alloy nanodendrites (PdCu NDs) as a high-performance peroxidase mimic for biofilm elimination. Catalytic kinetics shows that the composition-dependent synergy between Pd and Cu in the PdCu NDs can strongly enhance the peroxidase-like activity. Density functional theory calculations further provide the underlying mechanisms at both atomic and electronic levels for the effective adsorption and dissociation of H2O2 molecules on PdCu NDs surfaces. Owing to their superior peroxidase-like activity, the PdCu NDs exhibit striking biofilm inhibition properties, which suggests that the controlled synthesis of 2D noble metal alloy may open up new opportunities for enhancing enzyme-like activities of noble metal nanomaterials.
Preparation and anti-oxidation properties of carbon-coated copper nanoparticles

Abstract:Four different kinds of carbon-coated copper nanoparticles were synthesized by carbon arc discharge method using powder mixtures containing copper and graphite with mass ratios of graphite to copper of 4:1,3:2,2:3,1:4,respectively.The structures,topographies,size distributions,phase compositions and anti-oxidation properties of those nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffratometry(XRD),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) and differential scanning calorimety(DSC),respectively.And the factors influencing the particles size and the yield of carbon coated copper nanoparticles were also discussed.The results indicate that the carbon-coated copper nanoparticles show clear core-shell structure,the cores of the particles are copper,and shells of the particles are graphite carbon layers.The sizes of carbon coated copper nanoparticles are 20?60 nm,and the sizes of nanoparticles increase with increasing the copper content in sample electrode,meanwhile,the particles sizes increase accompanying the increase of the discharge current and reaction pressure.The yield of carbon coated-copper nanoparticles increases with the increase of the copper content,while reaction gas pressure has no significant effect on the yield.And with the increase of copper content,the inner copper core has a trend of further crystallization.Copper possesses catalysis to the external carbon layers,and the graphitization degree becomes more obvious as the content of copper increases.The outside graphitic carbon layers effectively prevent unwanted oxidation of the copper inside.The anti-oxidation property of carbon-coated copper nanoparticles is superior to that of the pure copper powder.

Abstract:In this study, we present a facile method for preparing oxidation-resistant Cu nanoparticles through a liquid-phase reduction with imidazole compounds (imidazole, 2-methylimidazole, 2-phenylimidazole, and benzimidazole) that serve as protective and dispersing agents. Through a complexation reaction between Cu atoms, the imidazole compounds can form a protective film on the Cu nanoparticles to prevent the particles from rapidly oxidizing. We compared the effects of the four kinds of imidazole compounds on the oxidation resistance and sintering properties of Cu particles. The Cu particles prepared with benzimidazole could be stored in the air for 30 days without being oxidized. After sintering at 300 °C and 2 MPa, the joint of the particles could reach a shear strength of 32 MPa, which meets the requirements for microelectronic packaging.

Comparison Study on the Stability of Copper Nanowires and Their Oxidation Kinetics in Gas and Liquid.

Abstract:The unsaturated "dangling" bonds on the surface of nanomaterials are extremely sensitive to the external environment, which gives nanomaterials a dual nature, i.e., high reactivity and poor stability. However, studies on the long-term effects of stability and reactivity of nanomaterials under practical conditions are rarely found in the literature and lag far behind other research. Furthermore, the long-term effects on the stability and reactivity of a nanomaterial without coating under practical conditions are seriously long-neglected. Herein, by choosing copper nanowire as an example, we systematically study the stability of copper nanowires (CuNWs) in the liquid and gas phase by monitoring the change of morphology, phase, and valence state of CuNWs during storage. CuNWs exhibit good dispersibility and durable chemical stability in polar organic solvents, while CuNWs stored in water or nonpolar organic solvents evolve into a mace-like structure. Additionally, fresh CuNWs are oxidized into CuO nanotubes with thin shells by heating in air. The activation energies of oxidation of CuNWs in the gas phase are determined by the Kissinger method. More importantly, the different oxidation pathways have significant effects on the final morphology, surface area, phase, optical absorption, band gap, and vibrational property of the oxidation products. Understanding the stability and reactivity of Cu nanostructures will add value to their storage and applications. This work emphasizes the significant issue on the stability of nanostructures, which should be taken into account from the viewpoint of their practical application.

Abstract:Copper (Cu) is prized for its exceptional conductivity and catalytic properties. However, its susceptibility to oxidation, particularly in the presence of water, poses a significant challenge, potentially compromising its inherent properties. Despite numerous efforts to address Cu oxidation, effective remedies remain elusive. Herein, we present the identification of nanobubbles (NBs) as a novel strategy to sustain Cu in a metallic state for extended durations within aqueous environments. The Cu foils immersed in pure water undergo rapid oxidation within a mere 4-hour timeframe, while ultra-small NBs maintain the metallic state for a prolonged 72-hour immersion period. During this process, the immersion treatment with ultra-small NBs induces nanocavity formation on Cu foils, accompanied by the detection of zero-valent Cu clusters in the bulk solution. This suggests a process wherein a fraction of metallic copper ionizes, enters the solution and undergoes reduction to form metallic copper clusters. This finding recovers a spatially separated redox process, with the NBs interface playing a pivotal role. The significance of this work extends beyond proposing a simple method to sustain Cu in a metallic state. It also unravels the anti-oxidant mechanism by using spatially separated redox reactions, which hold great potential for broad applications.

Abstract:In the current contribution, copper-manganese bimetallic oxide nanoparticles attached to carbon nanotube surfaces have been created utilizing a straightforward method rather than complicated machinery. The employed sources of Cu and Mn were copper sulfate and potassium permanganate, which were combined with modified carbon nanotubes and thermally treated at 250, 350, and 450 °C, respectively. As the annealing temperature rises from 250 to 450 °C, the copper-manganese bimetallic oxide nanoparticles adhered to the surface of the carbon nanotubes gradually grow in size from 9 to 45 nm. XRD and FTIR methods were used to study structural characteristics. The existence of copper-manganese bimetallic oxide phases was established based on the results. The peak height and sharpness of the XRD data were also improved by increasing the annealing temperature, reflecting an improvement in the crystallinity. A broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) was used to show how the applied frequency affected the dielectric characteristics.

Synthesis of oxidation-resistant electrochemical-active copper nanowires using phenylenediamine isomers

Abstract:Phenylenediamine (PDA) was chosen as a coordinating, reducing, and capping agent to effectively direct growth and protect against oxidation of Cu nanowires (Cu NWs) in an aqueous solution. PDA was found to reduce Cu (II) to Cu (I) at room temperature, and stabilize the resulting Cu (I) by forming a coordination complex. The presence of a stable, intermediate Cu (I) complex is an essential step in the synthesis of Cu NWs under mild conditions. Incorporation of different PDA isomers leads to different growth paths of forming Cu NWs. Both pPDA and mPDA-synthesized Cu NWs are covered with a thin layer of polyphenylenediamine and show excellent oxidation-resistant in boiling water (3 days), and long-term stability in water at room temperature (10 months). The polyPDA-coated Cu NWs are electrochemically active even after a long-term storage in water. The usefulness of the oxidation-resistant electrochemical-active Cu NWs prepared here for a variety of nanotechnology applications is discussed.

Abstract:The copper nanoflowers, assembled by sub-2 nm rough nanowires with high catalytic active (200) facets, are prepared by a prompt and simple method with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a capping agent. The CTAB plays a vital role in the synthesis process, whereas the copper nanorod arrays assembled by copper nanoparticles are obtained without CTAB. The copper nanoflowers are used as catalysts in oxygen reduction reactions and exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity, which shows nearly the same activity compared with the commercial Pt/C catalyst, attributing to the nanoflower-exposed higher catalytic active (200) facets. Furthermore, the nanoflowers can avoid methanol-poison effect and show better long-term operation stability. The density functional theory was used to calculate the atom energy of Cu(100) facets and Cu(111) facets. Both of O2 dissociation and H2O activation on the facets are very easy. However, the difference between Cu(100) facets and Cu(111) facets is the adsorption and dissociation energy of O2, and the adsorption and activation of oxygen molecule is much easier on Cu(100) facets than on Cu(111) facets because of the more open nature of (100) facets.
Li 2 O-Reinforced Cu Nanoclusters as Porous Structure for Dendrite-Free and Long-Lifespan Lithium Metal Anode.

Abstract:A nano-structured protective structure, pillared by the copper nano-clusters and in-situ filled with lithium oxide in the interspace, is constructed to efficiently improve the cyclic stability and lifetime of lithium metal electrodes. The porous structure of copper nano-clusters enables high specific surface area, locally reduced current density and dendrite suppressing, while the filled lithium oxide leads to the structural stability and largely extends the electrode lifespan. As a result of the synergetic protection of the proposed structure, lithium metal could be fully discharged with efficiency ~97% for more than 150 cycles in corrosive alkyl carbonate electrolytes, without dendrite formation. This approach opens up a novel route to improve the cycling stability of lithium metal electrodes with the appropriate protective structure.
Highly Stable Oil-Soluble Iron-Sulfur Nanoparticles: Preparation, Characterization and Electrochemical Properties

Abstract:To improve the stability of iron-sulfur clusters to air, an oil-soluble dialkyidithiophosphate (DDP) as a modifier, stabilizer, and coordination agent, was used to prepare highly stable iron-sulfur NPs in water-alcohol mixed solvents in this work. The morphology, surface composition, microstructure, stability and electrochemical properties of the as-prepared iron sulfure NPs were characterized by many techniques, such as Uv-vis, FT-IR, TEM, Raman, TG, and electrochemical analyzer. The results showed that DDP had been successfully covalently bonded onto iron sulfur NPs surface, and endowed the iron sulfur NPs with excellent oil-solubility, high stability, and good electrochemical performance. The stability test showed that the powders of iron sulfur NPs had excellent stability when exposed to oxygen. The electrochemical tests indicated that the iron sulfur NPs had excellent electrochemical reversibility. These findings suggest that the iron sulfur NPs prepared in this work has similar structure and electrochemical reversibility as the iron-slufur clusters in living organisms, and lays the foundation for its application in microelectronic devices and sensors.
