Abstract:profound charismatic and prophetic inspiration appears, but they also show how this model of holiness is religiously and socially defined, in private and institutional relationships, by illuminating some spiritual and social dynamics that are developed in relation to such forms of religious experience. It is striking, indeed, how the mystical and visionary experience of Mary or the infant Jesus not only translates into religious example and practice but is also an authoritative source for concrete imperatives and practical indications relating to everyday decisions about the community. Precisely because of these questions of historical and historical-religious interest, it is a pity that the present edition does not include an introductory essay or a broader commentary dealing briefly with these issues. Such a commentary would have helped the reader to immediately place the documents both within Giovanna’s biography and, more generally, against their cultural and religious background—for example, in their relation to key religious texts such as the Song of Songs and the Apocalypse. The reader feels the lack of an apparatus of notes and an index that at least report the biblical references that are implicitly at the basis of Giovanna’s interpretation of her mystical experience. This kind of apparatus would have helped readers understand the documents also as literary and ideological testimonies, with the lens of historical-critical investigation, and not only as transparent and innocent statements about her visionary experiences.
