Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors have shown enormous potential for portable electronic devices. Herein, hierarchical 3D all-carbon electrode materials are prepared by assembling N-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) on carbonized MOF materials (cZIF-8) interweaved with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for flexible all-solid-state supercapacitors. In this ternary electrode, cZIF-8 provides a large accessible surface area, CNTs act as the electrical conductive network, and N-GQDs serve as highly pseudocapactive materials. Due to the synergistic effect and hierarchical assembly of these components, N-GQD@cZIF-8/CNT electrodes exhibit a high specific capacitance of 540 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1) in a 1 m H2SO4 electrolyte and excellent cycle stability with 90.9% capacity retention over 8000 cycles. The assembled supercapacitor possesses an energy density of 18.75 Wh kg(-1) with a power density of 108.7 W kg(-1). Meanwhile, three supercapacitors connected in series can power light-emitting diodes for 20 min. All-solid-state N-GQD@cZIF-8/CNT flexible supercapacitor exhibits an energy density of 14 Wh kg(-1) with a power density of 89.3 W kg(-1), while the capacitance retention after 5000 cycles reaches 82%. This work provides an effective way to construct novel electrode materials with high energy storage density as well as good cycling performance and power density for high-performance energy storage devices via the rational design.

Abstract:A three-dimensional hierarchical graphene/polypyrrole aerogel (GPA) has been fabricated using graphene oxide (GO) and already synthesized one-dimensional hollow polypyrrole nanotubes (PNTs) as the feedstock. The amphiphilic GO is helpful in effectively promoting the dispersion of well-defined PNTs to result in a stable, homogeneous GO/PNT complex solution, while the PNTs not only provide a large accessible surface area for fast transport of hydrate ions but also act as spacers to prevent the restacking of graphene sheets. By a simple one-step reduction self-assembly process, hierarchically structured, low-density, highly compressible GPAs are easily obtained, which favorably combine the advantages of graphene and PNTs. The supercapacitor electrodes based on such materials exhibit excellent electrochemical performance, including a high specific capacitance up to 253 F g(-1), good rate performance, and outstanding cycle stability. Moreover, this method may be feasible to prepare other graphene-based hybrid aerogels with structure-controllable nanostructures in large scale, thereby holding enormous potential in many application fields.
Supercapacitors Based on Three-Dimensional Hierarchical Graphene Aerogels with Periodic Macropores

Abstract:Graphene is an atomically thin, two-dimensional (2D) carbon material that offers a unique combination of low density, exceptional mechanical properties, thermal stability, large surface area, and excellent electrical conductivity. Recent progress has resulted in macro-assemblies of graphene, such as bulk graphene aerogels for a variety of applications. However, these three-dimensional (3D) graphenes exhibit physicochemical property attenuation compared to their 2D building blocks because of one-fold composition and tortuous, stochastic porous networks. These limitations can be offset by developing a graphene composite material with an engineered porous architecture. Here, we report the fabrication of 3D periodic graphene composite aerogel microlattices for supercapacitor applications, via a 3D printing technique known as direct-ink writing. The key factor in developing these novel aerogels is creating an extrudable graphene oxide-based composite ink and modifying the 3D printing method to accommodate aerogel processing. The 3D-printed graphene composite aerogel (3D-GCA) electrodes are lightweight, highly conductive, and exhibit excellent electrochemical properties. In particular, the supercapacitors using these 3D-GCA electrodes with thicknesses on the order of millimeters display exceptional capacitive retention (ca. 90% from 0.5 to 10 A·g(-1)) and power densities (>4 kW·kg(-1)) that equal or exceed those of reported devices made with electrodes 10-100 times thinner. This work provides an example of how 3D-printed materials, such as graphene aerogels, can significantly expand the design space for fabricating high-performance and fully integrable energy storage devices optimized for a broad range of applications.
Nitrogen- and Oxygen-Containing Three-Dimensional Hierarchical Porous Graphitic Carbon for Advanced Supercapacitor

Abstract:Three-dimensional hierarchical porous graphitic carbon (HPGC) were synthesized via one-step carbonization-activation and a catalytic strategy. The method can not only improve the graphitization degree of carbon materials, but also offer plentiful interfaces for charge accumulation and short paths for ion/electron transport. Polypyrrole, potassium hydroxide, and nickel acetate were used as the carbon precursors, activating agent, and catalyst, respectively. The retraction and dissolution of Ni caused the change of pore size in the material and led to the interconnected micro/nano holes. Nickel acetate played a significant role in enhancing the electrical conductivity, introducing pseudocapacitance, and promoting ion diffusion. In the supercapacitor, HPGC electrode exhibited a remarkable specific capacitance of 336.3 F g−1 under 0.5 A g−1 current density and showed high rate capability, even with large current densities applied (up to 50 A g−1). Moreover, HPGC showed optimal cycling stability with 97.4% capacitance retention followed by 3000 charge-discharge cycles. The excellent electrochemical performances coupled with a facile large-scale synthesis procedure make HPGC a promising alternative for supercapacitors.

Abstract:To construct 3D hierarchical structures with the synergy effect is an effective strategy to improve the electrochemical properties of electrode materials as high-performance supercapacitors. Herein, a sandwich-like VO2(B)/carbon nanotube/reduced graphene oxide (abbreviated as VO2(B)/CNT/rGO) ternary nanocomposite is synthesized by a facile hydrothermal process. VO2(B) nanoribbons cover on the 3D CNT/rGO networks to form a novel 3D hierarchical porous sandwich-like structure. Thanks to the improved electric conductivity, abundant porosity, optimized accessibility and firm framework yielded from the synergy effect and unique structure, the produced ternary nanocomposite exhibits exceptional electrochemical properties including a high specific capacitance up to 649.1 F.g(-1) at 0.5 A.g(-1), a maximum energy density of 32.5 W.h.kg(-1) as well as long-term lifespan of 81.6 % after 10,000 cycles. Results imply a great potential of VO2(B)/CNT/rGO ternary nanocomposite for practical applications as a supercapacitor electrode material.

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbons are prepared by hydrothermal crosslinking reaction and KOH activation using sodium lignosulfonate as carbon precursor, 1,6-hexanediamine as crosslinking agent and nitrogen source. As-prepared nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbon possesses a high specific surface area (1867.4 m(2) g(-1)), moderate nitrogen-doped content (3.6 at.%) and presents a superior three-dimensional hierarchical porous structure with rich micropores, favorable mesopores and interconnected macropores. The nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbon electrode performs high specific capacitance (440 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1)) and excellent cycle stability (94.8% of its initial capacitance after 3000 cycles at 20 A g(-1)) in a three-electrode workstation using 6M KOH electrolyte, while it shows a superior rate capability (80.4% from 331 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) to 266 F g(-1) at 20 A g(-1)) in 1 MH2SO4. Furthermore, the nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbon assembled supercapacitor delivers a high specific capacitance (370 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1)) and remarkable energy density (18.5 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 300 W kg(-1), 10.4 Wh kg(-1) at high power density of 12 kW kg(-1)) in 6M KOH electrolyte. Abstract:A novel approach is reported to synthesize carbon foams with designable hierarchical porous structures for energy storage. The obtained carbons have an interconnected macroporous channel structure with narrow mesopores (3-5 nm in diameter) embedded throughout the carbon walls, providing low-resistance pathways for ion transportation to internal carbon surfaces. The obtained carbon electrodes can offer a capacitance up to 270 F g(-1) at a current density of 0.1 A g(-1) and especially an excellent high-rate performance with 222 F g(-1) as the current density increases to 10 A g(-1). Additionally, the electrodes exhibit a long cycling life at a high current density up to 10 A g(-1).

Abstract:Improving the conductivity and optimizing hierarchical porous structures are the efficient strategies to enhance the electrochemical performance of biomass-based porous carbon. Herein, high rate performance biomass-based porous carbon/graphene composite aerogels with the new hierarchical porous hybrid architectures were successfully synthesized by chemical self-assembly method using nontoxic Vitamin C as a reducing agent. As an electrode material for supercapacitor, the as-prepared composite aerogels not only show good conductivity and high specific surface of 893.9 m2 g−1, but also display ultrahigh specific capacitance and rate performance of 176 F g−1 at 20 A g−1 and 81.6% at current density ranging from 0.5 to 20 A g−1, respectively. Moreover, the composite aerogels-based device exhibits excellent cycling stability of up to 99.9% after 10000 cycles at a current density of 2 A g−1 and a higher energy density of 6.11 Wh kg−1 at 5000 W kg−1 compared with the individual porous carbon. The facile strategy developed here is of great significance to further improve and control the performance of biomass-based porous carbon and promote its development as high-rate performance electrode materials in the field of energy storage.

Abstract:A novel three-dimensional (3D) porous graphene/polyaniline/Co3O4 (GPC) ternary hybrid aerogels is firstly fabricated via self-assembly of graphene oxide/polyaniline (GO/PANI) by in situ polymerization and GO/cobalt salts hybrid sols through hydrothermal treatment. The prepared ternary hybrid aerogels features an interconnected 3D macroporous structure in which PANI/Co3O4 nanoparticles (PANI/Co3O4 NPs) with a diameter ∼ 20nm uniformly distributed on the surface of graphene nanosheets (GNs), and possesses an excellent performance with high specific capacitance of 1247Fg−1at a current density of 1Ag−1 and the capability can reach to 755Fg−1 even at 20Ag−1. Furthermore, no obvious capacitance loss is observed during 3500 cycles, indicating an outstanding cycling stability. The extraordinary electrochemical performance of the 3D GPC hybrid can be attributed to not only the high capacitance of PANI and Co3O4 with pseudocapacitive, but also the strong synergistic effect between the uniformly dispersed PANI/Co3O4 NPs and graphene aerogel, in which a powerful 3D porous structure with short diffusion path length for fast electron transportation.

Abstract:Supercapacitors based on two-dimensional (2D) ultrathin nanomaterials of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) are rapidly growing, but constructing three-dimensional (3D) skeleton networks structure with both high energy density and superior cycle stability remains challenging. In this work, supercapacitor based on 3D skeleton networks of rGO nanosheets/V2O5 nanobelts hybrids has been successfully constructed via a simple one-pot hydrothermal method. The resultant rGO/ V2O5 hybrid aerogel electrodes show a high specific capacitance of 310.1 F g(-1) (1 A g(-1)) and 195.2 F g(-1) (10 A g(-1)). Moreover, the assembled symmetric supercapacitors based on as-fabricated hybrid electrodes deliver a high gravimetric capacitance of 225.6 F g(-1) (0.5 A g(-1)), a high energy density of 31.3Wh kg(-1) (249.7 Wkg(-1)) and excellent long-term cycle stability (remain 90.2% after 5000 cycles). Above all, the as-designed 3D skeleton networks, with rGO nanosheets and V2O5 nanobelts hybrids intimately stacked, can give a guidance for designing other high-performance graphene-based electrodes and hold a great potential for high-performance electrical energy storages. Low-cost and High-Performance of a Vertically Grown 3D Ni–Fe Layered Double Hydroxide/graphene Aerogel Supercapacitor Electrode Material

Abstract:Developing low cost, highly efficient, stable and earth-abundant electrode materials for supercapacitors is critical for energy storage devices. In this work, a two-dimensional (2D) nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (Ni–Fe LDH) hybrid with 2D graphene was constructed into a three-dimensional (3D) aerogel by a facile one-step hydrothermal process assisted by freeze-drying treatment. Compared with the 2D structure, the 3D hybrid aerogel shows several advantages, including a unique porous framework, a multidimensional electron transport pathway and excellent electrical conductivity. When used as a supercapacitor electrode, benefiting from the above characteristics, the Ni–Fe LDH/graphene hybrid aerogel (Ni–Fe LDH/GHA) displays a high capacitance of 1196 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 and outstanding cycling stability with a capacitance retention of 80% after 2000 cycles. Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor device with Ni–Fe LDH/GHA and active carbon as the positive and negative electrodes, respectively, achieved an energy density of 17.6 W h kg−1 at a power density of 650 W kg−1 and excellent long-term cycle stability (a specific capacitance of 91 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 after 3500 cycles with 87.2% retention). This work demonstrates that low cost, high performance Ni–Fe LDH/GHA has great potential for practical applications as a positive electrode in supercapacitors.

Abstract:Amorphous vanadyl phosphate/graphene nanohybrids is successfully synthesized by first exfoliating bulk layered vanadyl phosphate (VOPO4 center dot 2H(2)O) into nanosheets, and then hydrothermal treatment with graphene oxide (GO). The electrochemical properties of the resulted materials are systematically investigated. It is found that a phase transformation from crystalline to amorphous is occurred to VOPO4 center dot 2H(2)O. As supercapacitor electrode material, the amorphous VOPO4/graphene composite exhibits a high specific capacitance (508 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g-1), an excellent rate capability (359 F g-1 at 10 A g(-1)), and a good cycling stability (retention 80% after 5000 cycles at 2 A g-1). Particularly, it simultaneously has a greatly enhanced energy density of 70.6 Wh center dot kg(-1) with a power density of 250 W kg(-1). The outstanding energy storage performance mainly originates from the generation of amorphous VOPO4 phase that facilitates ion transport by shortening ion diffusion paths and provides more reversible and fast faradic reaction sites, the hybridization with graphene that greatly improves the electric conductivity and structure stability, and the unique layer-on-sheet nanohybrid structure that effectively enhances the structure integrity. This work not only provides a facile method for the preparation of amorphous VOPO4/graphene composites, but also demonstrates the enhanced energy density and rate capability of amorphous VOPO4-based materials for potential application in supercapacitors. A Facile Alkali-Assisted Synthesis Strategy for Hierarchical Porous Carbon Aerogels for Supercapacitors

Abstract:Carbon aerogels synthesized via the polymerization of resorcinol (R) and formaldehyde (F) exhibit remarkable physiochemical properties, such as high thermal stability and excellent electrical conductivity. However, their limited specific surface area and porosity restrict their application potential. Herein, we developed hierarchical porous carbon aerogels using a one-step carbonization and activation method, directly converting the resin into carbon aerogel material by adding KOH as an activating agent. In contrast to conventional carbon aerogels with an irregular block ground structure, our hierarchical porous carbon aerogels exhibit substantially enhanced specific surface area, total pore volume, and surface oxygen content. In addition, this straightforward one-step fabrication approach holds significant promise for energy storage applications. Notably, the hierarchical porous carbon aerogel C1, with a KOH/RF mass ratio of 1, was proven to be the most effective electrode candidates, achieving a specific capacitance of 261.9 F∙g−1 at 1 A∙g−1 and 208.2 F∙g−1 at 20 A∙g−1. Moreover, it exhibited an outstanding rate capability of 79.5% and excellent capacity retention of approximately 97.5% after 10,000 cycles (7 A∙g−1). Abstract:Heteroatom-doped carbon materials with a high specific area, a well-defined porous structure is important to high-performance supercapacitors (SCs). Here, S and N co-doped three-dimensional porous graphene aerogel (NS-3DPGHs) have been synthesized in a facile and efficient self-assembly process with thiourea acting as the reducing and doping agent solution. Operating as a SC electrode, fabricated co-doping graphene, i.e. the sample of NS-3DPGH-150 exhibits the highest specific capacitance of 412.9 F g-1 under 0.5 A g-1 and prominent cycle stabilization with 96.4% capacitance retention in the back of 10 000 cycles. Furthermore, based on NS-3DPGH-150, the symmetrical supercapacitor as-prepared in 6 M KOH displays a superior energy density of 12.9 Wh kg-1 under the power density of 249 W kg-1. Hence, NS-3DPGHs could be considered as an excellent candidate for SCs.
Porous Multishelled Nio Hollow Microspheres Encapsulated Within Three-Dimensional Graphene As Flexible Free-Standing Electrodes For High-Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:Exploration of electrode materials with well-defined nanostructures and good flexibility is an efficient approach for achieving high-performance and flexible energy storage systems. However, it is still challenging to well integrate active materials into flexible electrodes and simultaneously maintain satisfactory electrochemical performance. Herein, we successfully synthesize novel three-dimensional graphene (3DG)-encapsulated porous multishelled NiO hollow microsphere (3DG/pMS-NiO) composite aerogels via a modified self-templating method and a dopamine (DA)-assisted self-assembly route. The well-designed highly interconnected porous 3DG network and the close contact NiO-graphene structure of the 3DG/pMS-NiO composite aerogels offer multiple advantages such as high porosity and accessible area, improved conductivity, enhanced electrolyte diffusion and a simple electrode preparation process. Thus, the as-prepared flexible 3DG/pMS-NiO electrodes showed significantly improved specific capacitance of 710.4 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1) and excellent rate capability with an ultrahigh capacitance retention of 92.5% at 10 A g(-1). In addition, the fabricated asymmetric supercapacitors (3DG/pMS-NiO//AC) showed a high specific capacitance of 34.4 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) with a voltage window of 0-1.6 V, a large energy density of 12.3 W h kg(-1) at a power density of 815.3 W kg(-1), and a decent cycling stability. This work profoundly enlightens the material design and electrode preparation, and even opens up an avenue for the development of high-performance and flexible energy storage systems.
