Abstract:Orthogonal time division multiplexing (OrthTDM) interleaves sinc-shaped pulses to form a high baud-rate signal, with a rectangular spectrum suitable for multiplexing into a Nyquist WDM (N-WDM)-like signal. The problem with generating sinc-shaped pulses is that they theoretically have infinite durations, and even if time bounded for practical implementation, they still require a filter with a long impulse response, hence a large physical size. Previously a method of creating chirped-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) pulses with a chirped arrayed waveguide (AWG) filter, then converting them into interleaved quasi-sinc pulses using dispersive fiber (DF), has been proposed. This produces a signal with a wider spectrum than the equivalent N-WDM signal. We show that a modification to the scheme enables the spectral extent to be reduced for the same data rate. We then analyse the key factors in designing an OrthTDM transmitter, and relate these to the performance of a N-WDM system. We show that the modified transmitter reduces the required guard band between the N-WDM channels. We also simulate a simpler scheme using an unchirped finite-impulse response filter of similar size, which directly creates truncated-sinc pulses without needing a DF. This gives better system performance than either chirped scheme.

Abstract:We theoretically and experimentally investigate the performance of two self-heterodyne detected radio-over-fiber (RoF) links employing phase modulation (PM) and quadrature biased intensity modulation (IM), in terms of bit-error rate (BER) and optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR). In both links, self-heterodyne receivers perform down-conversion of the RF subcarrier signal. A theoretical model including noise analysis is constructed to calculate the Q factor and estimate the BER performance. Furthermore, we experimentally validate our prediction from the theoretical modeling. Both the experimental and theoretical results show that the PM link offers superior OSNR receiver sensitivity performance (more than 6 dB) over the quadrature biased IM counterpart.

Abstract:A theoretical assessment of the interferometric noise in the optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) transmission system is presented. The impact of such noise on the system performance were investigated in detail. The corresponding system requirements were also revealed by the calculation results. Recommendations on the use of prechirping to reduce the interferometric noise in the OTDM system are given.

Abstract:The downsampling scheme of the Rayleigh backscattered signal in heterodyne phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) has been proven valid to reduce computational resource consumption, which is a critical issue in areas such as real-time monitoring applications. However, the influence of downsampling on the system’s sensing performances has not been explored. In this work, we established a model for the deterioration of noise caused by downsampling. The model reveals that the degradation of the power spectral density (PSD) of the demodulated phase noise is attributed to the out-of-band noise aliasing into the beat frequency signal. Moreover, the model provides the PSD degradation at different downsampling frequencies. The upper bound of the PSD degradation has been verified in the experiment, without any anti-aliasing operations, which demonstrates good consistency with the theoretical and simulation predictions (the PSD deviation values are less than 0.5 dB). Additionally, we optimized the downsampling process using an anti-aliasing filter with a more matched filter characteristic, resulting in reduced noise PSD which still falls within the PSD degradation range. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first detailed analysis of the downsampling influence on Φ-OTDR sensing performance. It provides theoretical guidance for practical engineering applications of downsampling.

Abstract:The performance of optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) system is limited by a complex combination of noise. In this paper we present a theoretical framework for the optical receiver in OTDM system based on the moment generation function. The proposed receiver model is showed to be more accurate in predicting the bit error rate (BER) performance than the former ones. Its validity is also verified by the experimental results.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the impacts of transmitter and receiver windows on orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) modulation and propose a window design to improve the OTFS channel estimation performance. Assuming ideal pulse shaping filters at the transceiver, we first identify the role of window in effective channel and the reduced channel sparsity with conventional rectangular window. Then, we characterize the impacts of windowing on the effective channel estimation performance for OTFS modulation. Based on the revealed insights, we propose to apply a Dolph-Chebyshev (DC) window at either the transmitter or the receiver to effectively enhance the sparsity of the effective channel. As such, the channel spread due to the fractional Doppler is significantly reduced, which leads to a lower error floor in channel estimation compared with that of the rectangular window. Simulation results verify the accuracy of the obtained analytical results and confirm the superiority of the proposed window designs in improving the channel estimation performance over the conventional rectangular or Sine windows.

Abstract:In direct-detection optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, channel impairments such as residual chromatic dispersion (CD), residual synchronization error, and clock frequency offset induce phase shifts over subcarriers. We propose a method of using image processing for phase channel estimation with negligible overhead which is applicable to various subcarrier modulation formats. We conduct experiment of 32-Gbit/s, 40-Gbit/s, and 48-Gbit/s direct detection optical (DDO) OFDM with 16QAM, 32QAM, and 64QAM subcarrier modulation to verify this method. We investigate the effects of the numbers of required test phases and OFDM symbols with experimental data. We also present an approach to reduce the complexity of this method.

Abstract:In this letter, we investigate error performance of rectangular pulse-shaped orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation with a practical receiver. Specifically, we consider an essential bandpass filter at receiver RF front-end, which has been ignored in existing works. We analyse the effect of rectangular pulses on practical OTFS receiver performance, and derive the exact forms of interference in delay-Doppler (DD) domain. We demonstrate that the transmitted information symbols in certain regions of the DD domain are severely contaminated. As a result, there is an error floor in the receiver error performance, which needs to be addressed for such OTFS waveform in practical systems.

Abstract:In the past decade, an increasing number of studies of double-pulse ϕ -OTDR systems have been reported, but so far, there are no studies specifically analyzing the influences of double pulses on system performance. In this paper, we construct a theoretical model of the double-pulse ϕ -OTDR system, analyze the interference process of the system theoretically, and make conjectures on spatial resolution and demodulation range. On the basis, we build a double-pulse ϕ -OTDR experimental setup based on Sagnac balanced interferometer. The feasibility of the proposed theory is verified by experiments altering the probe pulse parameters and localizing two-point disturbances at different frequencies. The results also indicate when pulse width is greater than the pulse interval, this system offers more accurate positioning capabilities and a continuous demodulation range with high fidelity. The conclusions provide a reference for the selection of appropriate double-pulse parameters for similar systems, and the theoretical model offers a methodological suggestion for exploring other types of double pulses or even multi-pulse systems.

Abstract:An orthogonal time sequency multiplexing (OTSM) scheme using practical signaling functions is proposed under strong phase noise (PHN) scenarios. By utilizing the transform relationships between the delay-sequency (DS), time-frequency (TF) and time-domains, we first conceive the DS-domain input-output relationship of our OTSM system, where the conventional zero-padding is discarded to increase the spectral efficiency. Then, the unconditional pairwise error probability is derived, followed by deriving the bit error ratio (BER) upper bound in closed-form. Moreover, we compare the BER performance of our OTSM system based on several practical signaling functions. Our simulation results demonstrate that the upper bound derived accurately predicts the BER performance in the case of moderate to high signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), while harnessing practical window functions is capable of attaining an attractive out-of-band emission (OOBE) vs. BER trade-off.

Abstract:The performance of a novel all-optical sampling orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system is proposed and analyzed. Time delays and phase shifters are used to realize all optical forward/inverse discrete Fourier transform (DFT/IDFT). Different system configurations are tested and analyzed to optimize the performance, including the system capacity, modulation formats, DFT/IDFT constructions, and the width of the sample pulse. The 50- and 100-Gb/s real-time all-optical sampling (AOS) OFDM systems are investigated. All results are analyzed, and useful suggestions are offered for future high-speed applications.

Abstract:In this paper, 40Gb/s optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) experimental system is presented and discussed. In the bit-interleaved OTDM data stream, frame structure is designed with unequal amplitude coding methods. We employ the Gain-Switched distributed-feedback laser (G-S DFB) and Comb-like Dispersion Profiled Fiber (CDPF) to generate the ultra-short optical pulses and chirped fiber grating for dispersion compensation. In the reception part, 10GHz frame clock is extracted from 40Gbit/s data stream with high Q value electronic filter and 10Gbit/s data channel is de-multiplexed with electro-absorption modulator (EAM). After transmission over 122km single mode fiber (SMF), bit error rate of the whole system is less than 10-9. In addition, the impact of OTDM channels amplitude difference particularly to the amplitude and jitter of extracted and clock is experimentally and theoretically discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we comprehensively investigate the performance of error-feedback noise shaping (EFNS) in low-resolution high-speed intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM/DD) PAM4 and coherent DP-mQAM transmission systems by simulation and experiments. The influence of EFNS parameters and digital to analog converter (DAC) parameters on EFNS performance is first numerically investigated in a low-resolution 56-GBaud 2-km IM/DD PAM4 transmission system. The combination of clipping and EFNS is also numerically evaluated and the impact of overloading is deeply analyzed. For coherent transmission, the EFNS performance is investigated for different modulation formats including QPSK, 16QAM and 64QAM. The optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) penalties for different modulation formats are evaluated numerically in a low-resolution 56-GBaud 80-km coherent transmission system. Finally, we experimentally demonstrate the EFNS performance in low-resolution 32-GBaud 10-km IM/DD PAM4 and 28-GBaud 80-km coherent DP-64QAM transmission experiments. Extensive numerical and experimental results show that EFNS can effectively mitigate the quantization noise of low-resolution DAC and thus reduce received optical power or OSNR penalty significantly. Although EFNS is a little inferior to DRE at the PNoB of 3, both of them have very similar performance when PNoB$geq$4. Compared with DRE, EFNS has lower computational complexity and no processing latency. In addition, no channel response is required for EFNS.

Abstract:The transimission performance of on-off keying (OOK) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals in radio-over-fiber (ROF) system is experimentally and theoretically studied. The theoretical results show that OFDM signal is almost not affected by inter-symbel interference (ISI), only with the phase changed, where as OOK signal is seriously affected by ISI. The experiment results show that the eye diagram of 2.5 Gb/s OOK signal is closed when transmitting over 60 km in single mode fiber (SMF), and its bit error rate (BER) can only reach 10~(-3). The constellation of OFDM is clear when ttransmitting over 130 km with BER of 10~(-4). All theoretical and experimental results show that the performance of OFDM is better than that of OOK in ROF system.

Abstract:According to the researches of transmitting downlink signal based on optical carrier suppression,we demonstrate two different ROF systems,one is based on intensity modulation to suppress the optical carrier,another is using phase modulation to generate sidebands to transmit the downlink signal.Simulation results prove the validity and reliability of the systems.A comparative study is carried out to the advantages and disadvantages of the transmission performance of both systems according to the spectra,the parameter of Q value,eye diagrams and BER curve,meanwhile the effectiveness and reliability of system are verified.

Abstract:We experimentally investigate the influence of vestigial sideband (VSB) filtering in a 40-Gbit/s optical system. Two kinds of optical filters and different pseudorandom bit sequences (PRBS) are used in experiment. The results show that optical filter ramp and PRBS length will cause different impacts in a VSB carrier suppressed return-to-zero system.

Abstract:The non-ideal frequency response and power fading phenomenon caused by optic-electric device in the transmission link of a direct-detection optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing(DDO-OFDM) system are theoretically analyzed.In order to reduce the influence of the non-ideal frequency response and power fading phenomenon,a digital pre-distortion technique for power fading of OFDM signal subcarriers is proposed.We compare regular OFDM signal with the pre-distorted OFDM signal in a DDO-OFDM system.The experimental results show that the power of high frequency subcarriers of the regular OFDM signal is attenuated severely after 200 km standard single-mode fiber(SMF) transmission, but the spectrum is relatively flat by pre-distorting the power of the OFDM subcarriers at the high frequency.In addition,the received sensitivity of the pre-distorted OFDM signal is significantly improved by about 3 dB at a bit error rate of 1×10~(-4) compared with the regular one without this technique.It is demonstrated that this pre-distortion technique can improve the system's performance effectively.
