Abstract:Orthogonal time division multiplexing (OrthTDM) interleaves sinc-shaped pulses to form a high baud-rate signal, with a rectangular spectrum suitable for multiplexing into a Nyquist WDM (N-WDM)-like signal. The problem with generating sinc-shaped pulses is that they theoretically have infinite durations, and even if time bounded for practical implementation, they still require a filter with a long impulse response, hence a large physical size. Previously a method of creating chirped-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) pulses with a chirped arrayed waveguide (AWG) filter, then converting them into interleaved quasi-sinc pulses using dispersive fiber (DF), has been proposed. This produces a signal with a wider spectrum than the equivalent N-WDM signal. We show that a modification to the scheme enables the spectral extent to be reduced for the same data rate. We then analyse the key factors in designing an OrthTDM transmitter, and relate these to the performance of a N-WDM system. We show that the modified transmitter reduces the required guard band between the N-WDM channels. We also simulate a simpler scheme using an unchirped finite-impulse response filter of similar size, which directly creates truncated-sinc pulses without needing a DF. This gives better system performance than either chirped scheme.

Abstract:A numerical analysis is presented on the long-haul wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmission system employing fiber-optic parametric amplifier (FOPA) cascades based on one-pump FOPA model with Raman Effect taken into account. The end-to-end equalization scheme is applied to optimize the system features in terms of proper output powers and signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) in all the channels. The numerical results show that—through adjusting the fiber spans along with the number of FOPAs as well as the channel powers at the terminals in a prescribed way—the transmission distance and system performance can be optimized. By comparing the results generated by different lengths of fiber span, we come to the optimal span length to achieve the best transmission performance. Furthermore, we make a comparison among the long-haul WDM transmission systems employing different inline amplifiers, namely, FOPA, erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), and Fiber Raman Amplifier (FRA). FOPA demonstrates its advantage over the other two in terms of system features.

Abstract:The impact of (de)multiplexers on 40 Gbit/s WDM system is investigated for NRZ and RZ coding formats. Performances of (de)multiplexers with different crosstalk, filter bandwidth and channel spacing are systematically analyzed to get the best system performance for 40 Gbit/s WDM transmission system with high spectral efficiency. The limitations imposed by misalignment and cascade of filters are also discussed.

Abstract:We compare the interchannel four-wave mixing (FWM) in dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems with continuous waves, quasi-continuous waves and ultrashort pulses. The differences are theoretically analyzed for the three inputs. We investigate the FWM conversion efficiency as a function of the channel spacing, the fiber length, the single bit energy and the pulse width. It is shown that the FWM effect in DWDM systems with quasi-continuous waves is the strongest and with ultrashort pulses is the lowest among the three cases. The FWM conversion efficiency changes periodically with the propagation length, and it is approximately an exponential function of the single bit energy. The performance of the pulse FWM effect versus the pulse width is different from that of the quasi-continuous wave FWM, which may be one possible way to suppress the interchannel FWM.

Based on the models, bandwidth optimization of the F-P demultiplexer in HD-WDM systems is discussed.

Abstract:We investigate power-dependent phase-matched four-wave mixing (FWM) in wavelength division multiplexing transmission lines, in which positive and negative dispersion fibers are alternately arranged to manage the dispersion and the dispersion slope. The FWM effect shows power-independent phase matching when the channel power is low. However, it is power dependent at high power. The maximum FWM conversion efficiency is shifted away from the zero channel space in the case of power-dependent phase matching. Optimization of the dispersion system for suppression of the FWM effect is determined.

Abstract:The performance of the hybrid optical codedivision multiple-access (OCDMA) and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network is analyzed. End-toend bit error rate (BER) of the network adopting error correction coding is calculated, and the expressions which show spectral efficiency performance, including the effects of polarization mode dispersion (PMD), are derived. The result demonstrates that PMD can decrease spectral efficiency dramatically. Analysis of the blocking performance with and without orthogonal optical codes (OOCs) and wavelength conversion shows that OOC and wavelength can improve the performance of the network. Since the wavelength conversion is much more costly than OOC conversion, a scheme for spare placement wavelength conversion is introduced to balance the cost and performance.

Abstract:The crosstalk penalty on the performance of optical satellite networks with wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) architectures is analyzed and quantified. The crosstalk is generated due to imperfection of the wavelength filtering devices at the wavelength router onboard a satellite node, when several optical WDM intersatellite links (ISLs) arrived and their channels are recombined though demultiplexer/multiplexer pairs, then they are transited. The Doppler wavelength shift is introduced to the ISLs. It causes the fluctuation to the system power penalty. The worst case of the system power penalty is used to analyze satellite networks with multihop ISLs, and crosstalk specification of wavelength filtering devices is given for the different number of multihop ISLs. This work contributes heuristically to the design of constellation networking with WDM Laser ISLs architectures.

Abstract:We systematically analyze the interchannel ultrashort pulses four-wave mixing (FWM) in dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems with single-mode fiber (SMF), nonzero dispersion-shifted fiber (NZDSF), and highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF). We investigate the FWM conversion efficiency as functions of channel spacing, fiber length, and signal power. We show that the FWM in DWDM system with HNLF is almost 40 times larger than with NZDSF and 400 times larger than with SMF. We obtain the minima of WDM channel spacings limited by FWM for SMF, NZDSF, and HNLF. The FWM conversion efficiency approaches to a constant as the propagation length increases and is approximately an exponential function of the peak power of incident signals.

Abstract:We report an in-depth investigation of the inter-modulation crosstalk in subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) systems with optical demultiplexing (ODeMux). Both theoretical derivations and numerical simulations show that the crosstalk in ODeMux systems mainly comes from the nonlinear mixing of the baseband and subcarrier modulations inside the signal channels. Several key parameters are then studied to estimate their effects on the magnitude of the crosstalk. As a result, performance optimization strategies are proposed for ODeMux SCM systems. In order to further enhance the transmission performance of ODeMux SCM systems, we discuss two techniques to suppress the inter-modulation crosstalk and analyze their effectiveness with numerical simulations.

Abstract:In an all-optical double-hop free-space optical communication system, the outage probability and bit error rate are analyzed using a composite channel. The model involves atmospheric attenuation, atmospheric turbulence, pointing error, and fiber coupling efficiency. Based on analysis of the channel model and amplifier spontaneous emission noise, the outage probability and bit error rate are obtained. For an all-optical double-hop link, fiber coupling efficiency has an important impact on outage probability, especially at relatively short total link length. By compensating for three terms of wavefront distortions, the system outage probability significantly decreases. The communication performance is further improved by optimizing the receiving aperture diameter and beam width.
Unified Crosstalk Theory of Fabry-Perot and Grating Demultipliers in Amplified WDM Transmission

Abstract:The crosstalk effects of Fabry-Perot and grating demultiplexers in Amplified WDM transmission are investigated by taking into consideration of contribution from far channel crosstalk. The crosstalk characteristics of grating demultiplexers is measured to be nearly independent of the channel separation due to device imperfection and dispersion, while the channel crosstalk of the Fabry-Perot demultiplexer assumes Lorentzian form. A unified theory for crosstalk effects of Fabry-Perot and grating demultiplexers is given, and the required fineness for Fabry-Perot demultiplexer and the required crosstalk coefficient for grating demultiplexer are predicted to be 100 and -32 dB respectively to assure 0.5 dB power penalty for a typical 16 channel 350 Km amplified WDM system with 2 nm spacing using SNR equalization method proposed by Dr. A.R. Chraplyvy.

In this paper, we study the effects of FWM along with Dispersion and Polarization in WDM networks. The simulation is done using OPTSIM and the results of input and output spectrum gives the amount of Non-linearity in WDM Optical Network.

Abstract:Intraband crosstalk (IXT) is one of the major factors limiting the performance of all-optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks. In this paper, the technology of forward error correction (FEC) is employed to improve the performance of a WDM network node impaired by IXT. Based on the moment generation function, a theoretical framework for the FEC coded optical receiver is presented, and the performance of the receiver in terms of IXT induced power penalty is evaluated by using saddle point approximation. The results show that due to FEC the power penalties can be significantly reduced by at least 3dB at the bit error rate of 10−10, so FEC technology can be used to increase scalabilities of wide area networks or decrease costs of local area networks.
A novel coding technique to suppress FWM effect in WDM transmission systems

Abstract:In long-haul Wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) transmission systems, the technique of unequal channel spacing is often adopted to suppress Four-wave mixing (FWM) crosstalk. However, the technique occupies wide bandwidth and this bandwidth conflicts with a cascade of Erbium doped fiber amplifier's (EDFA) and whole system's bandwidth. In this paper, a novel technique is proposed for solving this conflict and also helpful for further suppressing of FWM crosstalk by adopting bit-phase arranged Return-to-zero (RZ) code. A theoretical study is presented. Simulations are performed to show the effectiveness of this technique in 10 Gb/s WDM systems. We got good agreement between theory and simulations.

Abstract:In order to weaken the bit format effect of converted signal of wavelength converter based on cross-polarization-modulation in semiconductor optical amplifier (CPM-SOA), the principle of CPM-SOA wavelength converter is analyzed; and after discussing the characteristics of frequency chirping of converted signal pulses, a simple method is proposed to improve the bit format effect by using the positive or negative transmission slope of a filter to optimize the converted signal of in-phase or out-of-phase. 10 Gb/s wavelength conversion based on CPM-SOA experiment is demonstrated by using a JDS filter with 0.3 nm optical bandwidth, the bit format effect of long “1” bit and long “0” bit in converted signal is mostly eliminated, the converted signal of in-phase or out-of-phase is reshaped and their power penalties are reduced by more than 3 dB.

Abstract:The performances of SCDCF-based and RDF-based 40Gb/s OTDM and WDM systems are compared by means of numerical simulation. Theory and numerical results were presented and discussed with 40Gb/s signal of different duty cycles. Cross-phase modulation effects in 40Gb/s WDM systems are showed for the first time. We find that in single channel transmission small duty cycle signal shows superior performance. The problem of RDF based system is mainly due to large nonlinearity of the RDF fiber we choose to calculate. The residual dispersion remains potential problem even at very excellent slope compensation in 40Gb/s systems. RDF based system offers more robust performance than SCDCF at the same value of compensation rate due to its relative short SMF fiber in every span.

Abstract:Communication between computing systems is recognized as the main limitation to increasing the speed of all-electronic systems beyond levels currently achieved in existing supercomputers. Optical interconnects hold great promise in eliminating current communication bottlenecks because of properties that stem from optics inherent parallelism. Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) technology, by which multiple optical channels can be simultaneously transmitted at different wavelengths through a single optical transmission medium is a useful means of making full use of optics parallelism over a wide wavelength region. In this talk, we review the working principles of wavelength division (de) multiplexers (WD(D)M) for optoelectronic interconnection in high-throughput optical links and address the optical design issues of Wd9D)Ms. Several grating-based WD9D)M structures are analyzed. We report experimental data for several versions of WD(D)Ms which exhibit low insertion loss, high reliability, and low cost.
