Abstract:It is crucial to develop flexible and wearable electronic devices that have attracted tremendous interest due to their merits on compactness, flexibility and high capacitive properties. Herein we report the continuously ordered macroscopic poly(ionic liquid)-graphene fibers by wet spinning method via liquid crystal assembly for supercapacitor application. The fabricated all-solid-state supercapacitors exhibited a high areal capacitance (268.2 mF cm(-2)) and volumetric capacitance (204.6 F cm(-3)) with an outstanding areal energy density (9.31 mu Wh cm(-2)) and volumetric energy density (8.28 mWh cm (-3)). The fiber supercapacitors demonstrated exceptional cycle life for straight electrodes of about 10,000 cycles (94.2% capacitance retention) and flexibility at different angles (0 degrees, 45 degrees, 90 degrees, 180 degrees) along with a good flexible cycling stability after 6000 cycles (92.7% capacitance retention). To date, such a novel poly (ionic liquid)-graphene fiber supercapacitors would be a new platform in real-time flexible electronics. Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel wearable flexible supercapacitor with the conductive carbon-nanotube (CNT)/fabric electrode and PVA/H3PO4 solid-state electrolyte, which is cost-effective and can be easily mass produced. Two kinds of fabric as the electrode substrates, cotton knitting fabric and polyester-fiber knitting fabric, are used for comparison respectively. The flexible fabric-based supercapacitors show good specific capacitance (11.51 mF/cm(2) for cotton fabric-based supercapacitor (CFSC), 15.67 mF/cm(2) for polyester-fiber fabric-cased supercapacitor (PFSC)) and high cycling stability (remaining more than 90% after 1000 cycles). This low cost and simple fabrication process makes this kind of supercapacitors feasible to be power supplies for wearable electronic devices.

Abstract:Carbon-based flexible fiber-based supercapacitors (FFSCs) are promising power sources for portable and wearable electronics, but their applications are limited by low energy density due to a lower specific capacitance of common carbon materials. We fabricated ternary all-carbon fiber electrodes (N-GQD/GH/CF) with improved electrochemical performance. In this structure, graphene hydrogel (GH) was grown on carbon fibers (CFs) to form a 3D interconnected porous network (GH/CF), and nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) with high pseudocapacitive activity were electrodeposited into the GH/CF network. The ternary N-GQD/GH/CF hybrid electrode delivered a volumetric capacitance of 93.7 F cm(-3) at 20 mA cm(-3), which was around 7 times higher than that of the GH/CF, while the capacitance retention after 5000 cycles reached 87.9%, which was only a little lower than that of the GH/CF electrode (90.2%). It indicates the introduction of N-GQDs drastically improves the capacitance of the FFSCs without sacrificing the cycle stability. All-carbon asymmetric FFSCs were assembled using N-GQD/GH/CF as positive electrode and GH/CF as negative electrode. The assembled FFSCs exhibited a high energy density of 3.6 mW h cm(-3) at power density of 35.6 mW cm(-3) owing to the wider potential window (2 V) and the higher volumetric capacitance as well as excellent flexibility and cycling stability. Abstract:The miniaturized supercapacitors are promising energy storage devices that can replace traditional batteries in portable electronics. Excellent graphene-based fibers have becoming a dominant role as electrode materials for supercapacitors. Unique and excellent carbon nanotubes and graphene composite fibers (G/CNTs) with outstanding mechanical properties and excellent capacitive behaviors were prepared by a facile, one-step and timesaving process. Scanning electron microscopy images displayed that the diameter of obtained G/CNTs was similar to 150 mu m, and showed a directional structure of graphene nanosheets and few-walled carbon nanotubes (FWNTs) along the specific direction of the as-prepared composite fibers. The electrochemical performances of the resultant fibers as flexible electrodes were estimated by a three-electrode system. The as-synthesized G/CNTs delivered a specific volumetric capacitance of 312.6 F g(-1) at the current density of 200 mA g(-1), and the capacitance of Gio/CNTs could still remain at 89.6% of original capacitance after 10,000 cycles. Furthermore, the flexible G/CNTs could be fabricated into a stretchable and compressible fiber spring. The fiber super capacitor displayed much efficient electrochemical capacitive behaviors, promising for being portable and wearable electronics, and this development can potentially promote its application in other fields.

Abstract:Flexible all-solid-state supercapacitors based on graphene fibers are demonstrated in this study. Surface-deposited oxide nanoparticles are used as pseudo-capacitor electrodes to achieve high capacitance. This supercapacitor electrode has an areal capacitance of 42 mF cm(-2), which is comparable to the capacitance for fiber-based supercapacitors reported to date. During the bending and cycling of the fiber-based supercapacitor, the stability could be maintained without sacrificing the electrochemical performance, which provides a novel and simple way to develop flexible, lightweight and efficient graphene-based devices.

Abstract:High-performance fiber-shaped power sources are anticipated to considerably contribute to the continuous development of smart wearable devices. As one-/two-dimensional (1D/2D) frameworks constructed from graphene sheets, graphene fibers and fabrics inherit the merits of graphene, including its lightweight nature, high electrical conductivity, and exceptional mechanical strength. The as-fabricated graphene fiber/fabric flexible supercapacitor (FSC) is, therefore, regarded as a promising candidate for next-generation wearable energy storage devices owing to its high energy/power density, adequate safety, satisfactory flexibility, and extended cycle life. The gap between practical applications and experimental demonstrations of FSC is drastically reduced as a result of technological advancements. To this end, herein, recent advancements of FSCs in fiber element regulation, fiber/fabric construction, and practical applications are methodically reviewed and a forecast of their growth is presented.Graphical Abstract

Microfluidic Fabrication of Hierarchically Porous Superconductive Carbon Black/graphene Hybrid Fibers for Wearable Supercapacitor with High Specific Capacitance

Abstract:The growing demands for wearable, portable, and flexible textile electronics have attracted enormous attention in this field and technology. Herein, we put forward a controllable method of microfluidic fabrication strategy to synthesize superconductive carbon black/graphene composite fibers (SCB/GFs). The SCB/GFs demonstrate large specific surface areas (296.236 m(2) g(-1) , average pore size of 2.6 nm), high electrical conductivity (22316 S m(-1)), and good mechanical flexibility. Moreover, a flexible supercapacitor (CGSC) assembled by SCB/GFs is successfully manufactured. As expected, the CGSCs display outstanding electrochemical performances, including large specific capacitance (volume capacitance, 176.6 F cm(-3), mass capacitance, 241.8 F g(-1)), high energy densities (5.6 mWh cm(-3)), and superior long-period cyclic stability (92.6% retention after 10000 charge-discharge cycles). Based on these excellent performance, we further employ the assembled CGSCs coated with organic ionic liquid electrolyte (EMIMBF4/PVDF/DMF) to power an electronic timer and some light emission diode lamps when it is completely charged, exhibiting the enormous capability as highly effective electrode materials for energy storage devices. Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors using graphene have been intensively investigated due to their potential applications for wearable and smart devices. In order to avoid stacking between graphene layers, spacers such as carbon fibers and metal oxide particles are often introduced. Such composites enhance effectively the specific surface area of the electrodes and eventually supercapacitor performance. In present work, the graphene/g-C3N4 composite is fabricated and further employed as the supercapacitor electrode. The atomic interaction between C and N of g-C3N4 and O of graphene oxide during the post-reduction in graphene oxide is found to affect device performance. The devices fabricated using the graphene/g-C3N4 composite electrode exhibit a specific area capacitance of 1500 mF cm−2, and 95% of initial capacitance after 5000 cycles and a maximum energy density of 0.075 mWh cm−2. These all-solid-state flexible supercapacitors are thus promising for miniaturized electronics.

Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors have shown enormous potential for portable electronic devices. Herein, hierarchical 3D all-carbon electrode materials are prepared by assembling N-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) on carbonized MOF materials (cZIF-8) interweaved with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for flexible all-solid-state supercapacitors. In this ternary electrode, cZIF-8 provides a large accessible surface area, CNTs act as the electrical conductive network, and N-GQDs serve as highly pseudocapactive materials. Due to the synergistic effect and hierarchical assembly of these components, N-GQD@cZIF-8/CNT electrodes exhibit a high specific capacitance of 540 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1) in a 1 m H2SO4 electrolyte and excellent cycle stability with 90.9% capacity retention over 8000 cycles. The assembled supercapacitor possesses an energy density of 18.75 Wh kg(-1) with a power density of 108.7 W kg(-1). Meanwhile, three supercapacitors connected in series can power light-emitting diodes for 20 min. All-solid-state N-GQD@cZIF-8/CNT flexible supercapacitor exhibits an energy density of 14 Wh kg(-1) with a power density of 89.3 W kg(-1), while the capacitance retention after 5000 cycles reaches 82%. This work provides an effective way to construct novel electrode materials with high energy storage density as well as good cycling performance and power density for high-performance energy storage devices via the rational design.

Abstract:A novel type of sulfur-doped graphene fibers (S-GFs) were prepared by the hydrothermal strategy, the in situ interfacial polymerization method and the annealing method. Two S-GFs were assembled into an all-solid-state fibriform micro-supercapacitor (micro-SC) that is flexible and has a high specific capacitance (4.55 mF·cm −2 ) with the current density of 25.47 µA·cm −2 . The cyclic voltammetry (CV) curve of this micro-SC kept the rectangular shape well even when the scan rate reached 2 V·s −1 . There is a great potential for this type of S-GFs used in flexible wearable electronics.

Abstract:Fiber-based supercapacitors (FSCs) that display small volume, robust weavability, high power density, and long-term stability, have urgently become the indispensable power supplies in smart wearable industries. Graphene fiber is regarded as an ideal FSCs electrode due to its remarkable natures of anisotropic framework, adjustable layer spacing, porous structures, large specific-surface-area, processable electroactivity, and high electronical and mechanical properties. This review, mainly focuses on the graphene fiber-based supercapacitors (GFSCs), with respect to fiber preparation, micro-nanostructure modulation, supercapacitor construction, performance optimization, and wearable applications. Various fiber fabrication strategies, including wet-spinning, dry-spinning, film conversion, confined hydrothermal self-assembly, and microfluidic-spinning are presented for fiber's structure manipulation and large-scale production. Advanced nanostructures and electroactivity with various building principles, such as oriented alignment, porous network, hierarchical, and heterogeneous skeleton, engineered active-sites, and mechanical regulation are discussed for boosting charge transfer, and ionic kinetic diffusion and storage. Especially, the optimizing approaches for regular unit alignment, enhanced interlayer interactions, modulated structural nano-architecture are presented to deliver high capacitance and energy density. Moreover, the flexibility and stretchability of graphene fiber, together with wearable applications of power supply are highlighted. Finally, a short summary, current challenges and future perspectives for designing high energy density GFSCs are proposed.

Abstract:Wearable energy storage devices are crucial for the development of flexible and wearable electronics. However, their performance is still limited due to the addition of inactive additives and low porosity of electrodes. Herein, a novel strategy is reported to enhance the performance of flexible supercapacitor by a multifunctional interface design on cellulose substrate. The multifunctional interface can simultaneously take the function of binder, conductive additive and active material through the transition from the adhesive polydopamine interface to the nitrogen-doped carbon interface, and allows the electrode maintain nanoscale porosity and high specific area of 347.6 m2 g−1. The composite electrodes exhibit high specific areal capacitance of 3100 mF cm−2. All-solid-state supercapacitor based on them shows remarkable capacitance of 1208.4 mF cm−2 with excellent flexibility and rate capability, which is much higher than recently reported textile-based supercapacitors. This work may open up new opportunities for flexible electrodes and wearable supercapacitors with excellent performance.

Abstract:Modern wearable electronics are thirsty for flexible, lightweight energy storage and supply devices. Flexible fiber-shaped supercapacitors, possess good flexibility, high power density, fast charging capability and long cycle life, becoming a promising option for wearable devices. The past decade has witnessed the emergence of graphene fiber based supercapacitors (GFSCs) as one of the most active vicinity in fiber-supercapactiors, for their excellent properties including high surface area, chemical stability, excellent electrical conductivity, lightweight and mechanical properties. In this perspective, we introduced the basic energy storage mechanisms of GFSCs, followed by the analysis in improving their overall performances, recent advances, and a conclusive discussion on the challenges and opportunities.

Abstract:Flexible solid-state supercapacitors are of considerable interest as mobile power supply for future flexible electronics. Graphene or carbon nanotubes based thin films have been used to fabricate flexible solid-state supercapacitors with high gravimetric specific capacitances (80-200 F/g), but usually with a rather low overall or areal specific capacitance (3-50 mF/cm(2)) due to the ultrasmall electrode thickness (typically a few micrometers) and ultralow mass loading, which is not desirable for practical applications. Here we report the exploration of a three-dimensional (3D) graphene hydrogel for the fabrication of high-performance solid-state flexible supercapacitors. With a highly interconnected 3D network structure, graphene hydrogel exhibits exceptional electrical conductivity and mechanical robustness to make it an excellent material for flexible energy storage devices. Our studies demonstrate that flexible supercapacitors with a 120 μm thick graphene hydrogel thin film can exhibit excellent capacitive characteristics, including a high gravimetric specific capacitance of 186 F/g (up to 196 F/g for a 42 μm thick electrode), an unprecedented areal specific capacitance of 372 mF/cm(2) (up to 402 mF/cm(2) for a 185 μm thick electrode), low leakage current (10.6 μA), excellent cycling stability, and extraordinary mechanical flexibility. This study demonstrates the exciting potential of 3D graphene macrostructures for high-performance flexible energy storage devices.

Abstract:Graphene fiber-based supercapacitors have attracted tremendous interest and possess the greatest potential for flexible/wearable energy storage devices. However, their specific capacitance and energy density are not sufficient and impede their widespread practical application. Here, polyaniline/graphene hybrid fibers (PANI/GF) were fabricated by a simple in situ chemical polymerization of polyaniline on graphene fibers synthesized by the wet-spinning method and a chemical reduction process. The crumpled morphology of the graphene fibers and polymerization process in a dilute solution of aniline monomer improve the structural uniformity and stability of the composite fibers. The hybrid fibers based flexible supercapacitor with solid-state electrolyte not only deliver high specific capacitance of 87.8 m F cm−2 and high energy density of 12.2 μW h cm−2 at a current density of 0.22 mA cm−2, but also exhibits long cycling stability after 10,000 cycles. This is mainly ascribed to the uniform dispersion of polyaniline on the graphene fibers and the stable structure of the hybrid fibers. The as-synthesized graphene hybrid fibers are a promising candidate for flexible/wearable supercapacitors.

Abstract:Nowadays, lightweight, flexible, and wearable sustainable electric-power sources have attracted increasing attention due to the rapid development of portable electronics. Graphene fiber fabrics, as newly discovered carbon textiles, have exhibited attractive properties for wearable power devices. How to realize scalable construction of non-woven graphene-based fabric electrodes with high areal capacitance is challenging for portable electronics. Here, a novel coagulation bath fabrication technique was firstly reported to prepare reduced graphene oxide fiber fabrics (rGOFFs) for areal-energy-dense supercapacitors. The as-prepared rGOFFs showed high flexibility and conductivity. The symmetric supercapacitors (SCs) assembled with rGOFFs (95 μm) based fabric electrodes performed a high specific gravimetric capacitance (Cm) of 285 F/g at 0.1 A/g and 220 F/g at 1 A/g. The areal capacitance (Ca) of rGOFFs (220 μm) based electrode reached up to 2812 mF/cm2 at 1 mA/cm2. After electrochemical deposition of polyaniline (PANI) on rGOFFs (220 μm) substrate, the Ca of rGOFF@PANI – 220 μm based electrode was intensified to 3828 mF/cm2 at 1 mA/cm2 (172 F/cm3). The symmetric all-solid-state SCs showed an energy density from 28 μWh/cm2 (254 μW/cm2) to 11 μWh/cm2 (4950 μW/cm2). Overall, the as-designed rGOFFs based fabric electrodes and their fabrication techniques are of great potential for the next-generation multi-functional textile electronics.

Abstract:The proposed approach for fabricating ultralight self sustained electrodes facilitates the structural integration of highly flexible carbon nanofibers, amino-modified multiwalled carbon nano tubes (AM-MWNT), and MnO2 nanoflakes for potential use in wearable supercapacitors. Because of the higher orientation of AM-MWNT and the sublimation of terephthalic acid (PTA) in the carbonization process, freestanding electrodes could be realized with high porosity and flexibility and could possess remarkable electrochemical properties without using polymer substrates. Wearable symmetric solid-state supercapacitors were further assembled using a LiCl/PVA gel electrolyte, which exhibit a maximum energy density of 44.57 Wh/kg (at a power density of 337.1 W/kg) and a power density of 13330 W/kg (at an energy density of 19.64 Wh/kg) with a working voltage as high as 1.8 V. Due to the combination of several favorable traits such as flexibility, high energy density, and excellent electrochemical cyclability, the presently developed wearable supercapacitors with wide potential windows are expected to be useful for new kinds of portable electric devices.
