Abstract:An efficient and facile strategy was developed for the surface modification of functional carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by the combination of mussel inspired chemistry and single electron transfer living radical polymerization (SET-LRP). This method involves the dopamine (DA) formation of polydopamine (PDA), which was coated on the surface of pristine CNTs via self-polymerization in alkaline solution. Then, the Br-containing initiator was covalently attached on the surface of CNTs modified with PDA. Subsequently, the poly[ poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate] (PPEGMA) was in situ grown on the surface of Br-containing CNTs via the SET-LRP method. The resulting functional materials were characterized by a series of characterization techniques. It was demonstrated that PPEGMA chains were successfully conjugated to the surface of CNTs via a combination of mussel inspired chemistry and SET-LRP. After modifying with PPEGMA, the functional CNTs retain their pristine structure, but their dispersibility was significantly improved in polar and nonpolar solutions. Compared with previous methods, the strategy developed in this work is rather simple and effective. More importantly, due to the universality of mussel inspired chemistry, this novel strategy could also be used for the surface modification of many other materials.

Abstract:Surface functionalization of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with a thermo responsive polymer was achieved via combination of mussel inspired chemistry and surface initiated single electron transfer living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP). In this procedure, CNTs were first coated with polydopamine (PDA) through self polymerization under a rather mild condition. And then PDA functionalized CNTs bearing with amino and hydroxyl groups were further reacted with bromo isobutyryl bromide. Finally, a thermo responsive polymer poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) was introduced on the CNTs via SET‐LRP. The successful surface modification of CNT‐PDA‐PNIPAM was evidenced by a series of characterization techniques. The resulting CNT‐PDA‐PNIPAM showed significant enhancement of dispersibility in both aqueous and organic solvents. More importantly, these CNT‐polymer nanocomposites showed obvious thermo responsive behavior due to the surface coating CNTs with PNIPAM. As compared with previous methods, this method is not required oxidation of CNTs to introduce funcitonal groups for immobilization of the polymerization initiators. More importantly, this method could also be utilized for fabricating many other polymer nanocomposites because of the strong and universal adhesive of PDA to various materials. It is therefore, the novel strategy via marrying mussel inspired chemistry with SET‐LRP should be a simple, general and effective method for surface functionalization. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:A novel approach has been developed to synthesize magnetic nanoparticle and carbon nanotube (CNT) core-shell nanostructures, such as CoO/CNTs and Mn3O4/CNTs, by the nonaqueous solvothermal treatment of metal carbonyl on CNT templates using hexane as the solvent. The morphological and structural characterizations indicate that numerous cubic CoO or tetragonal Mn3O4 nanoparticles are deposited on the surfaces of the CNTs to form CNT-based core-shell nanostructures. It is revealed that the hydrophobic interaction between nanoparticles and CNTs in hexane plays the critical role for the formation of CNT-based core-shell nanostructures. A physical property measurement system (PPMS-9, Quantum Design) analysis indicates that the CoO/CNT core-shell nanostructures show weak ferromagnetic performance at 300 K due to the ferromagnetic Co clusters and the uncompensated surface spin states, while the Mn3O4/CNT core-shell nanostructures display ferromagnetic behavior at low temperature (34.5 K), which transforms into paramagnetic behavior with increasing temperature.

Abstract:In this work, a novel strategy for surface modification of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was developed via combination of mussel inspired chemistry and chain transfer free radical polymerization. First, pristine CNTs were functionalized with polydopamine (PDA), which is formed via self-polymerization of dopamine in alkaline conditions. These PDA functionalized CNTs can be further reacted with amino-terminated polymers (named as PDMC), which was synthesized through chain transfer free radical polymerization using cysteamine hydrochloride as chain transfer agent and methacryloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride as the monomer. PDMC perfectly conjugated with CNT-PDA was ascertained by a series of characterization techniques including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The dispersibility of obtained CNT nanocomposites (named as CNT-PDA-PDMC) was further examined. Results showed that the dispersibility of CNT-PDA-PDMC in aqueous and organic solutions was obviously enhanced. Apart from PDMC, many other amino-terminated polymers can also be used to functionalization of CNTs via similar strategy. Abstract:WOx (2 < x < 3) and WS2 nanostructures have been widely praised due to applications as catalysts, solid lubricants, field emitters, and optical components. Many methods have been developed to fabricate these nanomaterials; however, most attention was focused on the same dimensional transformation from WOx nanoparticles or nanorods to WS2 nanoparticles or nanotubes. In a solid-vapor reaction, by simply controlling the quantity of water vapor and reaction temperature, we have realized the transformation from quasi-zero-dimensional WS2 nanoparticles to one-dimensional W18O49 nanorods, and subsequent sulfuration reactions have further converted these W18O49 nanorods into WS2 nanotubes. The reaction temperature, quantity of water vapor, and pretreatment of the WS2 nanoparticle precursors are important process parameters for long, thin, and homogeneous W18O49 nanorods growth. The morphologies, crystal structures, and circling transformation mechanisms of sulfide-oxide-sulfide are discussed, and the photoluminescence properties of the resulting nanorods are investigated using a Xe lamp under an excitation of 270 nm.

Abstract:A thiol-functionalized poly (phenylacetylene) has been synthesized and characterized. The disappearance of the characteristic vibrations at 3312 and 776 cm(-1) (C=C-H) and 2106 cm(-1) (C=C), together with the vanishing of the chemical shifts at 3.0 (C=C-H) and the appearance of the chemical shifts at 6.4 (C=C-H) indicate the polymerization of the thiol-containing monomer. The hybrid of thiol-functionalized poly(phenylacetylene) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) showed good solubility in organic solvents. Meanwhile,the wrapping of the polymer chains on MWNTs led to the surface functionalization. By aid of the interactions between thiol groups and zinc cations, ZnO nanoparticles were assembled onto out-shells of the hybrids. These results suggested a novel route to the fabrication of multi-component nanostructures.

Abstract:Inorganic nanotubes with unique and well-defined porous structures show promising applications in diverse functional materials. However, it remains a challenge to fabricate inorganic nanotubes with precise length controllability. Herein, we report the synthesis of block copolymers consisting of a crystalline π-conjugated oligo(p-phenylenevinylene) (OPV) block, a hydrophilic poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) segment and a photo-cleavable o-nitrobenzyl (ONB) junction. By taking advantage of crystallinity of OPV segment, self-seeding approach of living crystallization-driven self-assembly was employed to generate uniform fiber-like micelles composed of an OPV core and a P2VP corona. The P2VP corona was then used to host the formation of silica, titania and Pt(0)-embedded silica shell. After the photo-cleavable OBN junctions were broken under light irradiation, the OPV core can be removed in a good solvent for OPV segments to give silica, titania and Pt(0)-embedded silica nanotubes. Significantly, the Pt(0)-embedded silica nanotubes exhibited much higher catalytic activity toward the reduction of p-nitroaniline than Pt(0)-embedded silica nanofibers with the same Pt content, probably owing to the presence of porous channel for nanotubes. This work opens a new avenue to fabricate inorganic nanotubes of controlled length.

Abstract:A facile, green, low cost and efficient one-step technology to synthesize highly dispersible functional single-walled and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (f-SWNTs and f-MWNTs) up to supergrams is reported. Large-scale (up to hundreds of grams) synthesis of functional azides was developed at first, and various reactive groups (i.e., -OH, -NH2, -COOH, and -Br) were then introduced onto the convex surfaces of CNTs in merely one reaction of nitrene addition under a relatively mild condition without causing significant damage to nanotubes. The contents of the functional moieties can be easily controlled by adjusting the feed ratio of the azide compounds to CNTs. In order to demonstrate the reactivity and functions of the immobilized organic moieties, different chemical reactions, including surface-initiated polymerizations, amidation, and reduction of metal ions, were performed on the functional CNTs, affording various CNT-polymer and CNT-Pt nanohybrids. The resulting materials were characterized by various measurements, such as TGA, Raman, XPS, FTIR, NMR, XRD, SEM, TEM, and HRTEM. The presented one-step methodology opens the avenue for industrial production of functional CNTs.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been widely used as adsorbents to remove various environmental pollutants because of their unique one dimensional structure, large surface areas and amount of micropores. However, the adsorption capacity of unmodified CNTs toward heavy metal ions is still limited due to their poor dispersibility and lack of functional groups. In this work, a novel strategy has been developed to prepare polyethylenimine functionalized CNTs via the combination of mussel inspired chemistry and the Michael addition reaction. The successful preparation of CNTs with amine groups was confirmed by a series of characterization measurements such as transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermal gravimetric analysis. Furthermore, the adsorption application of these amine functionalized CNTs toward Cu2+ was also examined. The effects of various factors including contact time, pH values, temperature and initial Cu2+ concentrations on the adsorption capability of the amine functionalized CNTs were also investigated. Langmuir and Freundlich models were used for thermomechanical analysis. The pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and intra-particle diffusion models were used for the kinetics analysis. The results demonstrated that CNTs can be successfully functionalized with amine groups through a rather facile and mild bioinspired strategy. These amine functionalized CNTs exhibited a much enhanced adsorption efficiency toward Cu2+. Given the strong and versatile adhesion of PDA to various materials, the bioinspired strategy described in this work could also be utilized for the fabrication of many other nanocomposites for environmental applications.
General Oriented Formation of Carbon Nanotubes from Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are of great interest for many potential applications because of their extraordinary electronic, mechanical and structural properties. However, issues of chaotic staking, high cost and high energy dissipation in the synthesis of CNTs remain to be resolved. Here we develop a facile, general and high-yield strategy for the oriented formation of CNTs from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) through a low-temperature (as low as 430 °C) pyrolysis process. The selected MOF crystals act as a single precursor for both nanocatalysts and carbon sources. The key to the formation of CNTs is obtaining small nanocatalysts with high activity during the pyrolysis process. This method is successfully extended to obtain various oriented CNT-assembled architectures by modulating the corresponding MOFs, which further homogeneously incorporate heteroatoms into the CNTs. Specifically, nitrogen-doped CNT-assembled hollow structures exhibit excellent performances in both energy conversion and storage. On the basis of experimental analyses and density functional theory simulations, these superior performances are attributed to synergistic effects between ideal components and multilevel structures. Additionally, the appropriate graphitic N doping and the confined metal nanoparticles in CNTs both increase the densities of states near the Fermi level and reduce the work function, hence efficiently enhancing its oxygen reduction activity. The viable synthetic strategy and proposed mechanism will stimulate the rapid development of CNTs in frontier fields.

Abstract:A novel strategy for surface modification of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) using reversible addition fragmentation transfer (RAFT) derived pH- and thermo-responsive polymers was developed via a combination of mussel inspired chemistry and a Michael addition reaction. In this procedure, pristine MWCNTs were first coated with polydopamine through self polymerization of dopamine under alkine solution, and then RAFT derived stimuli-responsive polymers were further grafted onto PDA modified MWCNTs via a Michael addition reaction. The successful modification of MWCNTs was confirmed by a series of characterization techniques including transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry. These polymer modified CNTs showed enhanced dispersibility in various solutions and pH-/temperature-responsive properties. Due to the strong adhesion of polydopamine to various materials surface, the method described in this work could also be extended to the surface modification of other nanomaterials.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that are derived from coordination polymers (CPs) and which have controllable structures have served as a significant class of sorbents in renewable materials. However, it is difficult to achieve efficient conversion of CPs to small-diameter CNTs (SDCNTs) via chemical vapor deposition (CVD). As described herein, we first report the large-scale growth of SDCNTs from a Co-based CP. The oxygen atoms of trimesic acid (BTC) which surround the Co-based CP crystals impede the aggregation of Co nanocatalysts so that they effectively serve as a unique “sieve” which allows the catalyst to promote the formation of SDCNTs during the CVD process. CNTs with a diameter of ∼14 nm evolved from the pristine CP architecture. This strategy is novel and provides a new approach for the large-scale preparation of SDCNTs, and it that may facilitate the development of high performance and inexpensive sorbents as well as photocatalysts for water treatment.
