Abstract:A novel strategy for surface modification of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) was developed via combination of mussel inspired chemistry and Michael addition reaction. In this procedure, pristine MWCNT were first coated with polydopamine (PDA) through self polymerization of dopamine. The PDA functionalized CNT (CNT-PDA) were further functionalized with amino-terminated polymers (polyPEGMA), which were synthesized via free radical polymerization using cysteamine hydrochloride as the chain transfer agent and poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether methacylate as the monomer. The successful modification of CNT was ascertained by a series of characterization techniques including transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry. The polymer modified CNT showed enhanced dispersibility in aqueous and organic solution. Cytotoxicity evaluation of polymers modified CNT showed that these modified CNT are biocompatible with cells. Finally, due to the universal adhesive of PDA and chain transfer free radical polymerization, this strategy developed in this work can also be extended for surface modification of many other nanomaterials with different functional polymers. Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been widely examined for biomedical applications. However, surface functionalization of CNTs with polymers is often required to improve their application performance. To obtain these CNT-based polymer nanocomposites, surface-initiated polymerization strategies are generally adopted. However, all of these methods rely on the surface oxidation of CNTs, which is a rather complex and time-consuming procedure, and involves hazardous reagents. In this work, a facile and efficient bio-inspired strategy was developed for surface PEGylation of CNTs via a combination of mussel-inspired chemistry and the Michael addition reaction. The potential biomedical applications of these PEGylated CNTs were evaluated for intracellular delivery of a normally used anticancer drug (Doxorubicin hydrochloride). Two steps were involved in this strategy, which included the surface coating of CNTs with polydopamine (PDA) through self-polymerization of dopamine, and a Michael addition reaction between the PDA-coated CNTs (CNT-PDA) and amino-functionalized polymers, which were obtained by free radical polymerization using poly(ethylene glycol) methyl methacrylate and N-(3-aminopropyl) methacrylamide as monomers. Results suggested that these PEGylated CNTs are well dispersed in aqueous solution and showed improved biocompatibility toward cancer cells. On the other hand, we also demonstrated that DOX can be effectively loaded on these PEGylated CNTs and delivered into cells for cancer treatment. More importantly, this strategy can also be utilized for surface modification of many other materials with different polymers due to the strong and universal adhesion of PDA and designability of polymerization. Therefore, this method should be of great interest for the fabrication of multifunctional nanocomposites for biomedical applications.

Abstract:The adsorption removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution using polymer nanocomposites has attracted great interest because of their advantages from both nanomaterials and polymers. In this work, a facile and novel method has been developed for surface modification of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNT) with carboxymethyl chitosan via combination of mussel inspired chemistry and Michael addition reaction. To obtain resultant CNT based chitosan nanocomposites (CNT-PDA-CS), pristine CNT were first coated with polydopamine (PDA) thin films through self polymerization of dopamine under alkaline aqueous solution. Then PDA modified CNT were further functionalized with carboxymethyl chitosan (CS) via Michael addition reaction. The successful preparation of CNT-PDA-CS nanocomposites was ascertained by a series of characterization techniques including transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry. The utilization of the resultant CNT-PDA-CS for removal of Cu2+ from aqueous solution was also examined in this work. The results showed that CNT-PDA-CS exhibited obviously enhanced Cu2+ removal capability as compared with the unmodified CNT. Apart from PDMC, many other amino-terminated polymers can also be used to functionalization of CNTs via similar strategy. Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been widely used as adsorbents to remove various environmental pollutants because of their unique one dimensional structure, large surface areas and amount of micropores. However, the adsorption capacity of unmodified CNTs toward heavy metal ions is still limited due to their poor dispersibility and lack of functional groups. In this work, a novel strategy has been developed to prepare polyethylenimine functionalized CNTs via the combination of mussel inspired chemistry and the Michael addition reaction. The successful preparation of CNTs with amine groups was confirmed by a series of characterization measurements such as transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermal gravimetric analysis. Furthermore, the adsorption application of these amine functionalized CNTs toward Cu2+ was also examined. The effects of various factors including contact time, pH values, temperature and initial Cu2+ concentrations on the adsorption capability of the amine functionalized CNTs were also investigated. Langmuir and Freundlich models were used for thermomechanical analysis. The pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and intra-particle diffusion models were used for the kinetics analysis. The results demonstrated that CNTs can be successfully functionalized with amine groups through a rather facile and mild bioinspired strategy. These amine functionalized CNTs exhibited a much enhanced adsorption efficiency toward Cu2+. Given the strong and versatile adhesion of PDA to various materials, the bioinspired strategy described in this work could also be utilized for the fabrication of many other nanocomposites for environmental applications.

Abstract:A number of nanomaterials, such as silicon dioxide, graphene oxide, nano-diamond, etc. have been discovered and reported for various applications in recent years. The removal of environmental pollutants using nanomaterials should be one of the most important topics owing to their small size, high specific surface areas and catalytical properties. However, the removal capability of some nanomaterials is still need to improve for the lack of active adsorption sites. The surface modification of nanomaterials to endow new functional groups should be promising route to improve their adsorption performance. In this work, a novel strategy that combination of mussel inspired chemistry and Mannich reaction was reported for the first time for preparation of CNT@PDA@PEI composites. The adsorption behaviors of the modified carbon nanotubes (CNT) and pristine CNT toward Cu2+ have been determined and compared to verify the effects of surface modification. The CNT related samples were characterized by a series of instruments. The results further indicated that the method is an excellent route of surface modification of CNT. The adsorption experimental results suggested that the functionalized CNT via the combination of Mannich reaction and mussel inspired chemistry was an excellent adsorbent for removal of Cu2+. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report for surface modification of CNT through the combination of mussel inspired chemistry and Mannich reaction. This method could also be expanded for the surface modification of other materials for various applications owing to the universality of mussel inspired chemistry and well designability of multicomponent reactions.

Abstract:We report a facile one-pot method to produce magnetic carbon nanotubes (MCNTs) using as-prepared carbon nanotubes modified by NaClO. MCNTs were used as adsorbents for the removal of dye pollutants, and the resulting MCNT hybrids exhibit good dispersibility, excellent magnetic and adsorption properties of dyes, which could favor many applications such as in biomedicine, environmental and energy industries.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are a type of one-dimensional carbon nanomaterials that possess excellent physicochemical properties and have been potentially utilized for a variety of applications. Surface modification of CNTs with polymers is a general route to expand and improve the performance of CNTs and has attracted great research interest over the past few decades. Although many methods have been developed previously, most of these methods still showed some disadvantages, such as low efficiency, complex experimental procedure and harsh reaction conditions etc. In this work, we reported a practical and novel way to fabricate CNTs based polymer composites via the combination of mussel inspired chemistry and reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. First, the amino group was introduced onto the surface of CNTs via self-polymerization of dopamine. Then, chain transfer agent can be immobilized on the amino groups functionalized CNTs to obtain CNT-PDA-CTA, which can be utilized for surface-initiated RAFT polymerization. A water soluble and biocompatible monomer poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA) was adopted to fabricate pPEGMA functionalized CNTs through RAFT polymerization. The successful preparation of CNTs based polymer composites (CNT-pPEGMA) was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in details. The CNT-pPEGMA showed good dispersibility and desirable biocompatibility, making them highly potential for biomedical applications. More importantly, a large number of CNTs based polymer composites could also be fabricated through the same strategy when different monomers were used due to the good monomer adaptability of RAFT polymerization. Therefore, this strategy should be a general method for preparation of various multifunctional CNTs based polymer composites.

Abstract:An efficient and facile strategy was developed for the surface modification of functional carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by the combination of mussel inspired chemistry and single electron transfer living radical polymerization (SET-LRP). This method involves the dopamine (DA) formation of polydopamine (PDA), which was coated on the surface of pristine CNTs via self-polymerization in alkaline solution. Then, the Br-containing initiator was covalently attached on the surface of CNTs modified with PDA. Subsequently, the poly[ poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate] (PPEGMA) was in situ grown on the surface of Br-containing CNTs via the SET-LRP method. The resulting functional materials were characterized by a series of characterization techniques. It was demonstrated that PPEGMA chains were successfully conjugated to the surface of CNTs via a combination of mussel inspired chemistry and SET-LRP. After modifying with PPEGMA, the functional CNTs retain their pristine structure, but their dispersibility was significantly improved in polar and nonpolar solutions. Compared with previous methods, the strategy developed in this work is rather simple and effective. More importantly, due to the universality of mussel inspired chemistry, this novel strategy could also be used for the surface modification of many other materials.

Abstract:A novel strategy for surface modification of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) using reversible addition fragmentation transfer (RAFT) derived pH- and thermo-responsive polymers was developed via a combination of mussel inspired chemistry and a Michael addition reaction. In this procedure, pristine MWCNTs were first coated with polydopamine through self polymerization of dopamine under alkine solution, and then RAFT derived stimuli-responsive polymers were further grafted onto PDA modified MWCNTs via a Michael addition reaction. The successful modification of MWCNTs was confirmed by a series of characterization techniques including transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry. These polymer modified CNTs showed enhanced dispersibility in various solutions and pH-/temperature-responsive properties. Due to the strong adhesion of polydopamine to various materials surface, the method described in this work could also be extended to the surface modification of other nanomaterials.
Preparation, characterization and cellular biological impact of water soluble multiwalled carbon nanotubes

Abstract:Biological effect and multiple application potentials of carbon nanotubes have been becoming important issues attracting intense research interests and concerns. In this work, water dispersible oxidized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (o-MWNTs) were prepared by an optimal combination of ultrasonication and concentrated acids oxidation; stable concentrations of 0.3 mg/ml were obtained in deionized water of surfactant free. The o-MWNTs dispersing in water displayed a strong characteristic adsorption at 253 nm in the spectra of UV/VIS/NIR. XPS analysis showed the presence of carboxylated groups on the o-MWNTs. SEM observation indicated that after the oxidation, the as received MWNTs were cut short; the average length was around 500 nm-800 nm, the maximum effective size obtained by DLS measurement was about 340 nm. It was inferred that the oxidation degree was one major key factor to determine the stable dispersion concentration of o-MWNTs in water. The o-MWNTs dispersing in water entered into the cells and located in the cytoplasm. Cells proliferation and living cycle were affected by the o-MWNTs dispersing in the culture medium in a concentration dependant manner; the cells cultivated in the medium with high concentration of o-MWNTs underwent apoptosis to a point determined by flowcytometry and TEM respectively, while low concentration of o-MWNTs induced light suppression of cells proliferation examined with cell viability assay.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are one of the most intensively studied nanomaterials due to their extraordinary mechanical, electrical and optical properties. Many fundamental studies and applications of SWCNTs, such as imaging, sensing and sorting, require SWCNTs to be dispersed in aqueous solutions first1, which is typically realized via ultrasonication in the presence of surfactants followed by ultracentrifugation2. However, due to the large energy input, ultrasonication inevitably introduces defects to SWCNTs and cuts the tubes into smaller pieces, compromising the many intriguing properties of SWCNTs3,4. Here, we show a simple method that disperses individual SWCNTs in water while retaining their lengths and avoiding introduction of defects. The as-prepared SWCNTs are 350% longer in length and 150% lower in defect density than their sonicated counterparts. These SWCNTs can also be further sorted in a chirality-specific manner. Due to the nondestructive merit of our method, the resulting full-length tubes showed a 50% increase in photoluminescence and an order of magnitude improvement in sheet conductance over those of sonicated controls. 1De Volder, M. Preparation and Characterization of Highly Stable and Aqueous Dispersion of Conjugated Polyelectrolyte/Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Nanocomposites

Abstract:The dispersion of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) is a key point to develop their extensive applications. Especially, to meet the requirements of future green chemistry, the preparation of environmentally-friendly, highly stable and well-distributed SWNTs in aqueous solution becomes particularly important. Based on it, a water-soluble conjugated polyelectrolyte, namely poly[3-[6-(N-methylimidazolitun)hexyl]thiophene] (P3MHT) was designed and used to disperse SWNTs through non-covalent strategy. P3MHT was synthesized by a modified Grignard metathesis (GRIM) polymerization followed by quatemization of the bromohexyl side groups of the poly[3-(6-bromohexyl)thiophene] with N-methylimidazole. The P3MHT/SWNTs nanocomposites were prepared by mixing P3MHT and SWNTs in water during ultrasonication followed by centrifugation. UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope (TEM), Zeta-nano electric potential analyzer, thermogravimetric (TGA) analysis were applied to characterize P3MHT/SWNTs nanocomposites. Compared to the commercial sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant to disperse SWNTs in aqueous solution, P3MHT exhibited a much better ability to disperse SWNTs under the same condition, i.e., the concentration of SWNTs dispersed by P3MHT was about two times than that of SWNTs dispersed by SDS. In P3MHT/SWNTs nano-composite solution, SWNTs were exfoliated to form individuals or small bundles with an average size of 298 nm. However, in SDS/SWNTs solution, SWNTs preferred to form small aggregates with an average size of more than 500 nm. The P3MHT backbones were wrapped around individual SWNTs via pi-pi interactions to form the charge-transfer complexes. The ionic side chains of P3MHT not only made the nanocomposites dispersed in water, but also prevented the aggregation of SWNTs by electrostatic repulsion, resulting in aqueous dispersion of P3MHT/SWNTs nanocomposites. While SDS molecules were adsorbed on the surface of SWNTs via hydrophobic alkyl chains, which was much weaker than the pi-pi interactions between P3MHT and SWNTs. Such P3MHT/SWNTs nanocomposite solution exhibited high stability which remained almost unchanged after 6 months while SDS/SWNTs nanocomposite had already precipitated then. Overall, it provides a promising and simple method to develop highly stable and water processed SWNTs.
PEGylation of Double-Walled Carbon Nanotubes for Increasing Their Solubility in Water

Abstract:Polyethylene glycol (PEG) functionalized double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) have been synthesized by a [2 + 1] cycloaddition reaction and characterized by transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, and UV-visible spectroscopy. Functionalization affords a large increase in the aqueous solubility of DWNTs. The saturated concentrations of DWNTs functionalized with diazido-terminated PEG 800 (with a molecular weight of 800) and azido-terminated PEG 750 monomethylether (with a molecular weight of 750) are very similar—0.36 and 0.37 mg/mL (DWNTs equivalent concentration), respectively.
Dispersing Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes with Water–soluble Block Copolymers and Their Use As Supports for Metal Nanoparticles

Abstract:Oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were dispersed in aqueous and organic solvents by non-covalent modification with a double-hydrophilic block copolymer, poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly [2-(N,N-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (PEO-b-PDMA). The PDMA segments were anchored onto the surface of the oxidized MWCNTs through multi-site zwitterionic interactions between the amino and the carboxyl groups while the PEO segments formed corona to promote the solubility of MWCNTs in different solvents. FT-IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy gave structural information on the resulting composite, supporting the successful modification. Thermal gravimetric analysis showed that the grafting yield could reach 26%. UV/vis and transmission electron microscopy provided direct evidence for the individual dispersion. The resulting modified MWCNTs could find broad spectrum of applications. As an example, Au and Pt nanoparticles were attached on the sidewall of the modified MWCNTs by using the amino groups of PDMA segments.
A Cell Membrane Biomimetic Polymer for Surface Modification of Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:A novel biomimetic amphiphilic polymer, cholesterol-end-capped poly (2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (CPMPC) was used as surfactant to achieve water soluble and biocompatible carbon nanotubes (CNTs) Crude CNTs were facilely dispersed in aqueous media by ultrasonication with the help of CPMPC, with cholesterol-end-capped PEG (CPEG) and lecithin as controls. The ability of the novel biomimetic amphiphile to solubilize and stabilize the CNTs was investigated by UV spectra. The solubility of CNTs in 1 mg/mL CPMPC and CPEG aqueous solutions was found to be 1.705 mg/mL and 1.468 mg/mL, respectively. The solubility of CNTs, in 0.8 mg/mL lecithin was I however, only 0.326 mg/mL. Furthermore, CPMPC coated CNTs precipitated quite slowly compared with CPEG coated CNTs, which indicated better stabilizing ability of CPMPC. Cell culture was used to evaluate the biocompatibility of the amphiphiles stabilized CNTs using MTT assay and cell morphology observation. While CPEG coated CNTs showed obviously detrimental effect on the growth of HUVEC304 cells, CPMPC coated CNTs did not exhibit obvious toxicity. The biocompatible CPMPC coated CNTs represent an excellent nano-object for potential biomedical applications.
Preparation of Micelle-Encapsulated Single-Wall and Multi-Wall Carbon Nanotubes with Amphiphilic Hyperbranched Polymer

Abstract:The hyperbranched polyester (BoltornTM H20) was modified by maleic anhydride and then polystyrene (H20-MAh-PSt) to form amphiphilic micelles in water. The single-wall and multi-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs and MWCNTs, respectively) were encapsulated in the formed micelles through non-covalent interactions. The formed structures were confirmed by FTIR, NMR, GPC, and XPS analysis. The dispersion and aggregation behaviors were observed by TEM and UV–vis and Raman spectroscopic analysis. The results showed that the dispersion performance of the obtained micelle-encapsulated carbon nanotubes in water was greatly improved compared to the pure carbon nanotubes. From the TEM observation, the individual SWCNT structure and the uniform polymer coating around the surface of SWCNT were seen after crosslinking. The Raman spectroscopic measurements also demonstrated that for the crosslinked samples, no effect occurred associated with concentration-dependent carbon nanotube aggregation.
