Abstract:Layered oxides are promising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries because of their high theoretical capacities. However, many of these layered materials experience severe capacity decay when operated at high voltage (>4.25 V), hindering their practical application. It is essential to design high-voltage layered cathodes with improved stability for high-energy-density operation. Herein, nano P2-Na2/3(Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13)O2 (NCM) materials are synthesized using a modified Pechini method as a prospective high-voltage sodium storage component without any modification. The changes in the local ionic state around Ni, Mn, and Co ions with respect to the calcination temperature are recorded using X-ray absorption fine structure analysis. Among the electrodes, NCM fired at 850 °C (NCM-850) exhibits excellent electrochemical properties with an initial capacity and energy density of 148 mAh g-1 and 555 Wh kg-1, respectively, when cycled between 2 and 4.5 V at 160 mA g-1 along with improved cyclic stability after 100 charge/discharge cycles. In addition, the NCM-850 electrode is capable of maintaining a 75 mAh g-1 capacity even at a current density of 3200 mA g-1. In contrast, the cell fabricated with NCM obtained at 800 °C shows continuous capacity fading because of the formation of an impurity phase during the synthesis process. The obtained capacity, rate performance, and energy density along with prolonged cyclic life for the cell fabricated with the NCM-850 electrodes are some of the best reported values for sodium-ion batteries as compared to those of other p2-type sodium intercalating materials.

Abstract:Developing sodium-ion batteries for large-scale energy storage applications is facing big challenges of the lack of high-performance cathode materials. Here, a series of new cathode materials Na0.66CoxMn0.66-xTi0.34O2 for sodium-ion batteries are designed and synthesized aiming to reduce transition metal-ion ordering, charge ordering, as well as Na+ and vacancy ordering. An interesting structure change of Na0.66CoxMn0.66-xTi0.34O2 from orthorhombic to hexagonal is revealed when Co content increases from x = 0 to 0.33. In particular, Na0.66Co0.22Mn0.44Ti0.34O2 with a P2-type layered structure delivers a reversible capacity of 120 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C. When the current density increases to 10 C, a reversible capacity of 63.2 mAh g(-1) can still be obtained, indicating a promising rate capability. The low valence Co2+ substitution results in the formation of average Mn3.7+ valence state in Na0.66Co0.22Mn0.44Ti0.34O2, effectively suppressing the Mn3+-induced Jahn-Teller distortion, and in turn stabilizing the layered structure. X-ray absorption spectroscopy results suggest that the charge compensation of Na0.66Co0.22Mn0.44Ti0.34O2 during charge/discharge is contributed by Co2.2+/Co3+ and Mn3.3+/Mn4+ redox couples. This is the first time that the highly reversible Co2+/Co3+ redox couple is observed in P2-layered cathodes for sodium-ion batteries. This finding may open new approaches to design advanced intercalation-type cathode materials.

Abstract:We designed a new P2 type cathode material, P2-Na2/3(Mn1/2Fe1/4Co1/4)O2, by mixing transition metals in the TM layer in P2 type layered oxide to prevent the long range ordering of Na or transition metals and create a large single phase region which is conductive to good Na+ transport. Futhermore, we suppressed the undesirable monoclinic transition commonly observed in Mn-containing layered oxides by introducing the Co2+/3+ redox couple. As a result, P2-Na2/3(Mn1/2Fe1/4Co1/4)O2 shows so far the largest single phase region and the highest rate performance among layered oxide cathode materials. We believe this work has opened the door for the application of sodium ion batteries in high power energy storage devices.
Optimal Synthesis and New Understanding of P-2-type Na2/3Mn1/2Fe1/4Co1/4O2 As an Advanced Cathode Material in Sodium-Ion Batteries with Improved Cycle Stability

Abstract:A sol-gel method with ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid and citric acid as co-chelates is employed for the synthesis of P2-type Na2/3Mn1/2Fe1/4Co1/4O2 as cathode material for sodium-ion batteries. Among the various calcination temperatures, the Na2/3Mn1/2Fe1/4Co1/4O2 with a pure P2-type phase calcined at 900°C demonstrates the best cycle capacity, with a first discharge capacity of 157mAhg−1 and a capacity retention of 91mAhg−1 after 100 cycles. For comparison, the classic P2-type Na2/3Mn1/2Fe1/2O2 cathode prepared under the same conditions shows a comparable first discharge capacity of 150mAhg−1 but poorer cycling stability, with a capacity retention of only 42mAhg−1 after 100 cycles. Based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the introduction of cobalt together with sol-gel synthesis solves the severe capacity decay problem of P2-type Na2/3Mn1/2Fe1/2O2 by reducing the content of Mn and slowing down the loss of Mn on the surface of the Na2/3Mn1/2Fe1/4Co1/4O2, as well as by improving the activity of Fe3+ and the stability of Fe4+ in the electrode. This research is the first to demonstrate the origin of the excellent cycle stability of Na2/3Mn1/2Fe1/4Co1/4O2, which may provide a new strategy for the development of electrode materials for use in sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Layered P-type structures are integral to most competitive cathodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, the performance of P2-type cobalt-based layered materials is unsatisfactory owing to a low initial discharge capacity caused by Na deficiency. Here, Mn-doped NaxCoO2 with a P3 structure is synthesized by using a modified solvent-thermal method with calcination. A structural analysis shows that partial Mn doping can effectively control P3 phase formation and increase d-layer spacing, thereby improving the diffusion of Na+. In addition, enhanced electrochemical performance is observed in optimized P3-type Na0.26Co0.48Mn0.52O2(NCMO-1), which exhibits a reversible specific capacity of 64 mAh g−1 at 3 A g−1 and a good capacity retention of 58% after 500 cycles. Furthermore, the Na-ion full cell constructed with an NCMO-1 cathode and a hard carbon anode yields a competitive energy density of 175.9 Wh kg−1 at 0.4 A g−1 with excellent cycle stability. Thus, this work provides a new viewpoint on the development of P3 structural materials with higher electrochemical performance for SIBs.

Abstract:Co-free cathode material is an ideal material for developing low-cost sodium ion batteries. Both O3 and P2 single-phases suffer structural degradation, resulting in irreversible structural collapse and rapid capacity decline. Compared with the single-phase crystal structure type O or P, the composite phase crystal structure has attracted the attention of researchers due to its superior performance advantages. Referring to the element composition and crystal structure of Li-rich cathode material, the novel biphasic P2/O3-Na1-xLixNi0.33Mn0.67O2 cathode material was synthesized by solid state method. The introduction of Li+ makes more Na+ in the material remain in the triangular prism position at high charging voltage, which will not destroy the biphasic structure and improve the stability of high rate during the cycle. At 0.1C and 20C rates, Li0.2Na0.8Ni0.33Mn0.67O2 released 132.5 and 70.1 mAh g−1 discharge specific capacities, respectively. In the deep charging and discharging status, the superior capacity retention of 80.1 % is measured even after 120 cycles of sodium ion extraction and insertion.

Abstract:P2-type Na-Ni-Mn layered oxides are potential cathode materials for energy storage in sodium-ion batteries, but have low cycling stability and limited Na storage capacity due to complex phase transitions. Herein, co-regulating vacancies and doping were implemented to address the issue, resulting in the successful synthesis of hexagonal columnar P2-Na0.5Li0.1Ni0.2Mn0.7O2 through a solid-state synthesis method. Increased interlayer spacing of Na+ can offer numerous active sites for Na+ insertion and extraction. P2-Na0.5Li0.1Ni0.2Mn0.7O2 exhibits an impressive initial discharge capacity of 139.1 mAh g−1 and 78.5 % capacity retention after 100cycles at 1.0C, which is a significant improvement compared to the pristine Na0.7Ni0.3Mn0.7O2. Overall, our study significantly boosts the electrochemical performance of P2-type materials, thus offering exciting avenues for the advancement of high-performance sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:P‐type layered oxide is a promising cathode candidate for sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs), but faces the challenge of simultaneously realizing high rate capability and long cycle life. Herein, Co‐substituted NaxMnO2 nanosheets with tunable P2/P3 biphase structures are synthesized by a novel dealloying–annealing strategy. The optimized P2/P3–Na0.67Mn0.64Co0.30Al0.06O2 cathode delivers an excellent rate capability of 83 mA h g−1 at a high current density of 1700 mA g−1 (10 C), and an outstanding cycling stability over 500 cycles at 1000 mA g−1. This excellent performance is attributed to the unique P2/P3 biphases with stable crystal structures and fast Na+ diffusion between open prismatic Na sites. Moreover, operando X‐ray diffraction is applied to explore the structural evolution of Na0.67Mn0.64Co0.30Al0.06O2 during the Na+ extraction/insertion processes, and the P2–P2′ phase transition is effectively suppressed. Operando Raman technique is utilized to explore the structural superiority of P2/P3 biphase cathode compared with pure P2 or P3 phase. This work highlights precisely tailoring the phase composition as an effective strategy to design advanced cathode materials for SIBs.

Cobalt-substituted Na0.44Mn1-xCoxO2: Phase Evolution and a High Capacity Positive Electrode for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Na0.44Mn1-xCoxO2 (x=0, 0.01, 0.08, 0.11, 0.22, 0.33, 0.44) powders are synthesized as positive electrodes for sodium-ion batteries via a thermopolymerization method. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy are used to analyze their crystal structures and particle morphologies. Galvanostatic cell cycling is used to characterize the electrochemical properties. The Co-substitution can change the structure of Na0.44Mn1-xCoxO2 from T-type (x=0) into layered P2-type (x=0.11) or P3-type (x=0.44). For the samples synthesized under our specific conditions, the particle morphology can be used as an indicator of their crystal structures: rod-like (T-type), plate-like (P2-type) and granules (P3-type). P2-type Na0.44Mn0.89Co0.11O2 allows more Na+ intercalation into the inter-layer spacing and results in a high discharge capacity with 220mAhg−1 at 12mAg−1 in initial cycle, 180mAhg−1 after 40 cycles in the voltage range of 2.0-4.2V and a good rate performance of 104mAhg−1 at a rate of 600mAg−1 in the voltage range of 2.0-4.0V.
On the P2-NaxCo1-y(Mn2/3Ni1/3)yO(2) Cathode Materials for Sodium-Ion Batteries: Synthesis, Electrochemical Performance, and Redox Processes Occurring During the Electrochemical Cycling

Abstract:P2-type NaMO2 sodiated layered oxides with mixed transition metals are receiving considerable attention for use as cathodes in sodium-ion batteries. A study on solid solution (1 - y)P2-NaxCoO2-(y)P2-NaxMn2/3Ni1/3O2 (y = 0, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, 1) reveals that changing the composition of the transition metals affects the resulting structure and the stability of pure P2 phases at various temperatures of calcination. For 0 ≤ y ≤ 1.0, the P2-NaxCo(1-y)Mn2y/3Niy/3O2 solid-solution compounds deliver good electrochemical performance when cycled between 2.0 and 4.2 V versus Na+/Na with improved capacity stability in long-term cycling, especially for electrode materials with lower Co content (y = 1/2 and 2/3), despite lower discharge capacities being observed. The (1/2)P2-NaxCoO2-(1/2)P2-NaxMn2/3Ni1/3O2 composition delivers a discharge capacity of 101.04 mAh g-1 with a capacity loss of only 3% after 100 cycles and a Coulombic efficiency exceeding 99.2%. Cycling this material to a higher cutoff voltage of 4.5 V versus Na+/Na increases the specific discharge capacity to ≈140 mAh g-1 due to the appearance of a well-defined high-voltage plateau, but after only 20 cycles, capacity retention declines to 88% and Coulombic efficiency drops to around 97%. In situ X-ray absorption near-edge structure measurements conducted on composition NaxCo1/2Mn1/3Ni1/6O2 (y = 1/2) in the two potential windows studied help elucidate the operating potential of each transition metal redox couple. It also reveals that at the high-voltage plateau, all of the transition metals are stable, raising the suspicion of possible contribution of oxygen ions in the high-voltage plateau.
Orthorhombic Na2/3Cu0.1Mn0.9O2 cathode: Enhanced Na storage performances with the suppressed Mn–O bond anisotropy

Abstract:Orthorhombic Mn-based layered oxides (P′2) have drawn much attention as promising cathode materials for sodium ion batteries (SIBs) with high specific capacities and rich resources. However, P′2-Na x MnO2 cathode suffers from inferior rate capability and poor cycling performances, owing to the complicated phase transition during de-/sodiation process. Herein, Cu-substitution P′2-Na2/3Cu0.1Mn0.9O2 is successfully prepared to mitigate the multiple phase transition by reducing the distortion of the MnO6 octahedron. Mn–O bond anisotropy is decreased and the spacing distance of Na layer is constricted by the modulation of the CuO6 octahedron, giving enhanced electronic conduction, validated by theoretical calculations and X-ray diffraction refinement. P′2-OP4 phase transition is replaced by reversible P′2-Z phase transition with slighter volume change, leading to the lower lattice strain in both c-axis direction and a-b plane, as probed by Operando/ex situ X-ray diffraction and synchrotron X-ray absorption spectra, which strengthens the stability of lattice skeleton. Consequently, P′2-Na2/3Cu0.1Mn0.9O2 exhibits outstanding rate capabilities (102 mAh/g at 750 mA g−1) and enhanced cycle performances (91 % at 150 mA g−1 after 100 cycles). This Cu-substitution strategy provides an effective method to design the structure-stable layered oxide cathodes for SIBs.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries are considered as the most promising candidates for grid-level energy storage applications due to its unique features of much lower cost and comparable energy density to lithium ion batteries. However, searching for suitable cathode materials with high capacity and good cycling stability are still the bottleneck issues due to the involved unmanageable phase transitions and difficult morphology control. Herein, unique fullerene-like hollow polyhedrons of P2-type Na0.67Ni0.15Mn0.85O2 cathode were successfully synthesized via a facile and scalable self-template strategy, where largely enhanced electrochemical properties can be achieved compared to its bulk counterpart. It can deliver a high specific capacity of 101 mAh g(-1) after 120 cycles at a rate of 100 mA g(-1), reaching an excellent capacity retention of 96.8 %. The possible origins of the enhanced performance were further analyzed to be the synergistic effect of hollow interior and novel morphology of the polyhedron, leading to well exposed (002) planes, shorter diffusion path and better structural robust. Importantly, the full battery without pre-sodiation treatment could deliver a high energy density of 133.1 Wh kg(-1) based on the total mass of cathode and anode, which sheds a new light for designing high energy density sodium-ion full batteries.

Abstract:P2‐type layered transition metal oxide Na0.67Ni0.33Mn0.67O2 is considered as a promising cathode for advanced sodium‐ion batteries due to its high theoretical specific capacity. However, the P2‐type cathode suffers severe P2‐O2 phase transition during cycling process, resulting unsatisfactory cyclic stability and rate capability. Herein, a Ca/Li co‐doped P2‐type Na0.62Ca0.05Ni0.33Mn0.57Li0.10O2 (NCNMLO) cathode material was synthesized through a simple sol‐gel method. With the synergistic effect of Ca‐doping at Na sites and Li substitution at transition metal (TM) sites, the cathode achieves an excellent electrochemical performance due to the inhibited P2‐O2 phase transition and improved ion diffusion with Na+/vacancy disordering arrangement. The NCNMLO cathode exhibits a good cyclic stability with 70.8% of capacity retention at 1 C after 200 cycles and excellent rate capability with 40.1 mAh g−1 at 20 C. The dual sites doping strategy provides an effective and simple approach for designing high‐performance layered oxide cathode materials for sodium‐ion batteries.

Na-Rich Layered Transition Metal Oxides with Core/Shell Structures for Improved Performance of Sodium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:While P2-type layered transition metal oxides are regarded as potential cathode candidates for sodium-ion batteries because of the high theoretical capacity and a wide operating voltage window, they still suffer from low capacity and sluggish sodium-ion kinetics. Here, we report a Na0.67Mn0.66Co0.17Ni0.17O2 cathode material with a core/shell structure. P2-Na0.67Mn0.66Co0.17Ni0.17O2 has exhibited excellent discharge specific capacity (266 mAh g–1 at 0.1 C and 89 mAh g–1 at 5 C) and ultralong cycle stability, which are among the best state-of-the-art values for Na-based Na-ion batteries. The superior stability results from core/shell structures composed of nanosheets, and the space between the core and shell effectively relieves the volume expansion caused by the deintercalation of sodium ions. Transition metal doping effectively improves the structural distortion caused by the Jahn–Teller effect and provides high sodium mobility, creating higher specific capacity. These findings provide new ideas for the design and development of high-performance sodium-ion battery cathode materials.

Abstract:Ternary layered oxide Na0.67Ni0.17Co0.17Mn0.66O2 with P2 structure has emerged as alternative to the lithium-ion batteries. The main cause of the induced circulation fluctuation is the P2-O2 change that exists during the charging and discharging process. In this study, a Ca/Mg co-doped strategy has been employed to solve this problem and P2-type Na0.64Ca0.03(Ni0.17Co0.17Mn0.66)0.9Mg0.1O2 with satisfactory electrochemical performance has been successfully prepared. XRD results confirm that no impure phases formed after Ca/Mg co-substitution. Particularly, the co-doped Na0.64Ca0.03(Ni0.17Co0.17Mn0.66)0.9Mg0.1O2 shows an impressive initial discharge capacity of 158 mAh g−1, and the capacity after 100 cycles reaches 140 mAh g−1, which has been greatly improved than the raw Na0.67Ni0.17Co0.17Mn0.66O2. Small amount of Ca expands the lattice spacing and improves the specific capacity. The presence of inert Mg2+ inhibits P2-O2 transition, thus enhancing the structure stability. The study shows that the cycling stability and the rate capability of Na0.67Ni0.17Co0.17Mn0.66O2 can be improved by Ca/Mg co-doping.

Abstract:P2-type layered manganese-based oxides, as promising high-energy-density and low-cost cathodes, have been triggered considerable attentions in sodium ion batteries (SIBs). Nevertheless, P2-type manganese-based oxides still suffer from the sluggish kinetics and unfavorable Jahn-Teller effect. Herein, motivated by the high ionic conductivity and rigid three-dimension framework of NASICON-type materials, the well-known Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 thin layer was coated on P2-type Na 0.612 K 0.056 MnO 2 surface to modify electrochemical sodium storage and structural stability. The optimal Na 0.612 K 0.056 MnO 2 @Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 exhibited a high discharge capacity of 203 mA h g − 1 within 1.8 − 4.3 V at a low current density of 10 mA g − 1 . When the current density enhances into 500 mA g − 1 , it delivers a high initial discharge capacity of 145.7 mA h g −1 within 1.8 − 4.3 V at 500 mA g −1 and maintains 69% capacity retention after 100 cycles. Besides, at low temperature of −20 °C, it offers 100.1 mA h g − 1 after 100 cycles within 1.8 − 4.3 V at 100 mA g − 1 , which is much higher than that of NKMO (65.2 mA h g − 1 ). The Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 can decrease Mn 3+ content and avoid the Jahn-Teller effect of Na 0.612 K 0.056 MnO 2 in structural level, enabling the enhanced Na + diffusion coefficient of Na 0.612 K 0.056 MnO 2 . Such strategy NASICON coating on cathode would pave a new pathway on rational design of high-performance cathode for SIBs.

Abstract:The particle pulverization induced by volume change and the disproportionation reaction of Mn3+ to Mn4+ and electrolyte-soluble Mn2+ are two major challenges for Na0.67MnO2 cathodes in Na-ion batteries. Herein, Ni and/or Fe doped Na0.67MnO2 was synthesized to suppress the particle pulverization and disproportionation reaction. The replacement of 33% Mn ions by Ni in Na0.67MnO2 can effectively reduce the particle pulverization and disproportionation of Mn3+, resulting in improved cycling stability at the cost of reduced capacity. To develop a high capacity and long cycle life cathode material, Ni in Na0.67Ni0.33Mn0.67O2 is further partially substituted by Fe to generate Na0.67Fe0.20Ni0.15Mn0.65O2, which retains similar to 70% of its initial capacity after 900 cycles, corresponding to a very low capacity decay rate of 0.033% per cycle. To the best of our knowledge, the Na0.67Fe0.20Ni0.15Mn0.65O2 synthesized by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) represents one of the best cathode materials for Na-ion batteries to date. In addition, a thin layer (5 nm) of Al2O3 is deposited on the Na0.67MnO2 electrode by atomic layer deposition (ALD) to further reduce the dissolution of Mn ions and accommodate the volume change, which further extend the cycling stability of Na0.67MnO2 electrodes.

Abstract:A Co‐Ni‐free, poly‐elemental doping strategy (Li, Mg, and Cu) with sodium‐rich Mn‐based P2‐layered cathodes for Na+ ion storage. The sodium‐rich host structure promotes high reversible capacity with high initial coulombic efficiency, enhances structural stability, and mitigates internal stress due to volume changes. This study investigated the factual structural transformation and surficial chemistry of cathodes during charging and discharging in a half‐cell sodium‐ion battery. The rapid capacity loss attributed to irreversible phase reactions and structural instability has consistently affected the development of P2‐layered cathode materials. Moreover, the introduction of costly elements such as single or multiple dopants has failed to resolve the sustainability challenges in designing an optimal Mn‐based layered oxide cathode. This study proposes a Co‐Ni‐free, poly‐elemental doping strategy (Li, Mg, and Cu) combined with high sodium content for an Mn‐based P2‐layered cathode designed for Na+ ion storage. In situ X‐ray diffraction analysis confirms the absence of P2 – O2 phase transitions during cycling for both NLMMC87 (Na0.87Li0.1Mg0.1Mn0.7Cu0.1O2) and NLMMC77 (Na0.77Li0.1Mg0.1Mn0.7Cu0.1O2). This can be attributed to the co‐substitution of the electronegative Cu element and the stabilizing dopants Li and Mg, which suppress oxygen evolution. Simultaneously, the high sodium content within the host structure promotes high reversible capacity, enhances structural stability, and minimizes internal stress due to volume changes. Moreover, NLMMC87 demonstrates a reversible capacity of 167.9 mA h g−1 at 0.1 C (97% Coulombic efficiency) and maintains excellent stability across various current rates. Further investigations into the practical application of NLMMC87 in a sodium full cell will be a critical step toward realizing an ideal cathode for sodium‐ion batteries.

Abstract:P2-type manganese-based layered oxides are considered as promising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, most of them suffer from sluggish kinetics and unfavorable structural stability, severely impeding their practical applications. Herein, Nasicon-type NaTi2(PO4)3 (NTP) nanoshell is coated on the surface of P2-type Na0.67Co0.2Mn0.8O2 (NCM) to boost its performance as a novel cathode for SIBs. The as-prepared NCM@NTP7 exhibits smooth electrochemical charge/discharge profiles, with a specific capacity of 70.7 mAh/g at 20C, and 86.7% capacity retained at 0.5C after 150 cycles at room temperature. Impressively, the bulk structure can be stabilized via the absolute solid-solution reaction at low temperature (-20℃), which shows 120.9 mAh/g discharge capacity at 0.2C with 92.3% retention and fast Na+ transport kinetic, wherein the D value is 16 times as large as that of pristine NCM. Our study provides a simple and efficient strategy to design and optimize promising layer-structural cathodes for SIBs.
