Abstract:Tunable photoluminescent nitrogen-doped graphene and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) quantum dots are synthesized via a facile solid-phase microwave-assisted (SPMA) technique utilizing the pyrolysis of citric acid and urea precursors. The atomic ratio, surface functionalization, and atomic structure of as-prepared quantum dots strongly depend on the ratio of citric acid to urea. The quantum dots have a homogeneous particle size and tend to form a circle and/or ellipse shape to minimize the edge free energy. The atomic ratio of surface nitrogen to carbon (N/C) in the quantum dots can reach as high as 1.74, among the highest values reported in the literature. The SPMA technique is capable of producing high-quality quantum dots with photoluminescence (PL) emission at various wavelengths on a pilot scale. The atomic structures of the N-doped graphene and g-C3N4 quantum dots are explored using molecular dynamics simulations. Increasing the urea concentration increases the tendency of in-plane N (i.e., quaternary N) substitution over that of other amino functionalizations, such as pyrrolic and pyridinic N. The PL emission can be precisely tuned via a one-step SPMA method by adjusting the precursor composition. A high quantum yield of 38.7% is achieved with N-doped graphene quantum dots, indicating the substantial influence of the N- and O-rich edge groups on the enhancement of PL efficiency. A bandgap structure is proposed to describe the interstate (π*–π) transition of quantum dots. This work introduces a novel approach for engineering the chemical composition and atomic structure of graphene and g-C3N4 quantum dots, facilitating their research and applications in optical, electronic, and biomedical devices.

Abstract:Highly bright-fluorescent N (nitrogen), S (sulfur) co-doped graphene quantum dots (GQDs) were synthesized through an modified hydrothermal method. The doped GQDs are smaller than 10 nm in size in average and stable in aqueous solution. Unlike many reports on graphene oxide (GO), the as-synthesized doped GQDs exhibit bright blue photoluminescence (PL) emission and the emission wavelength is excitation-independent. The intriguling results indicate that GQDs may have great potential in the optic and optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:In this study, nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) and a TiO2 nanocomposite were synthesized using a simple hydrothermal route. Ammonia water was used as a nitrogen source to prepare the N-GQDs. When optically characterized by UV-vis, N-GQDs reveal stronger absorption peaks in the range of ultraviolet (UV) light than graphene quantum dots (GQDs). In comparison with GQDs/TiO2 and pure TiO2, the N-GQDs/TiO2 have significantly improved photocatalytic performance. In particular, it was found that, when the added amount of ammonia water was 50 mL, the content of pyridinic N and graphitic N were as high as 22.47% and 31.44%, respectively. Most important, the photocatalytic activity of N-GQDs/TiO2-50 was about 95% after 12 min. The results illustrated that pyridinic N and graphitic N play a significant role in photocatalytic performance.
Gram-scale Synthesis of Single-Crystalline Graphene Quantum Dots with Superior Optical Properties

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have various alluring properties and potential applications, but their large-scale applications are limited by current synthetic methods that commonly produce GQDs in small amounts. Moreover, GQDs usually exhibit polycrystalline or highly defective structures and thus poor optical properties. Here we report the gram-scale synthesis of single-crystalline GQDs by a facile molecular fusion route under mild and green hydrothermal conditions. The synthesis involves the nitration of pyrene followed by hydrothermal treatment in alkaline aqueous solutions, where alkaline species play a crucial role in tuning their size, functionalization and optical properties. The single-crystalline GQDs are bestowed with excellent optical properties such as bright excitonic fluorescence, strong excitonic absorption bands extending to the visible region, large molar extinction coefficients and long-term photostability. These high-quality GQDs can find a large array of novel applications in bioimaging, biosensing, light emitting diodes, solar cells, hydrogen production, fuel cells and supercapacitors.

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) hold promising application in electronics and optoelectronics because of their excellent photo-stability, tunable photoluminescence and high quantum yield. However, the absorption and emission mechanisms have been debated for years. Here, by employing time-dependent density functional theory, we demonstrate that the different N-doping types and positions give rise to different absorption and emission behaviors, which successfully addresses the inconsistency observed in different experiments. Specifically, center doping creates mid-states, rendering non-fluorescence, while edge N-doping modulates the energy levels of excited states and increases the radiation transition probability, thus enhancing fluorescence strength. More importantly, the even hybridization of frontier orbitals between edge N atoms and GQDs leads to a blue-shift of both absorption and emission spectra, while the uneven hybridization of frontier orbitals induces a red-shift. Solvent effects on N-GQDs are further explored by the conductor-like screening model and it is found that strong polarity of the solvent can cause a red-shift and enhance the intensity of both absorption and emission spectra.

Abstract:Hydroxyl-graphene quantum dots (GQDs) modified mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (mpg-C3N4) composites were fabricated through electrostatic interactions. A variety of techniques were applied to discuss systematic effect on the morphology, optical, electronic properties and structure of GQDs/mpg-C3N4 composites. Remarkably, the 0.5 wt% GQDsimpg-C3N4 composites exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than that of the pure mpg-C3N4 by using rhodamine B (RhB) and colorless tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) as pollutants under visible light irradiation. The results indicated that uniform dispersion of GQDs on the surface of mpg-C3N4 and intimate contact between the two materials contributed to the enhanced activity. Radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance tests both certified that the GQDsimpg-C3N4 composites can generate more center dot O-2(-) species and a small fraction of holes for photocatalytic degradation. Abstract:<p>Materials with tunable photoluminescence (PL) are highly desirable. It can lead to important applications such as photodetectors, bio-imaging, and broadband modulators. In this work, nitrogen-doped graphene oxide quantum dots (NGOQDs) were synthesized by hydrothermal method. The microstructures as well as optical properties of NGOQDs were studied. The as-prepared NGOQDs present tunable PL and exhibit a maximal PL blue-shift of ca. 88 nm compared to that of the graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs). The observed PL blue-shift of the NGOQDs is attributed to the high content of pyridine-like and pyrrolic-like nitrogen atoms doping in the NGOQDs. Our proposed mechanism for the PL blue-shift of the NGOQDs is supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations.</p>

Abstract:A hydrothermal approach was developed for the synthesis of N-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) by cutting N-doped graphene. The N-GQDs obtained have a N/C atomic ratio of ca. 5.6% and diameter of 1–7 nm. The photoluminescence (PL) properties of the N-GQDs were investigated. It was found that the N-GQDs possess bright blue PL and excellent upconversion PL properties.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) represent a new class of quantum dots with unique properties. Doping GQDs with heteroatoms provides an attractive means of effectively tuning their intrinsic properties and exploiting new phenomena for advanced device applications. Herein we report a simple electrochemical approach to luminescent and electrocatalytically active nitrogen-doped GQDs (N-GQDs) with oxygen-rich functional groups. Unlike their N-free counterparts, the newly produced N-GQDs with a N/C atomic ratio of ca. 4.3% emit blue luminescence and possess an electrocatalytic activity comparable to that of a commercially available Pt/C catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in an alkaline medium. In addition to their use as metal-free ORR catalysts in fuel cells, the superior luminescence characteristic of N-GQDs allows them to be used for biomedical imaging and other optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:This paper reports a facile fabrication of N-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) showing controllable chemical properties through a hydrothermal treatment. The N-GQDs have a uniform size of 3.06 +/- 0.78 nm and prefer the equilibrium shapes of circle and ellipse due to the minimization of edge free energy. The N/C atomic ratio in N-GQDs can be precisely tailored in a range from 8.3 at% to 15.8 at% by simply controlling the concentration of N source (ammonium hydroxide). One order of magnitude quantum yield of 34.5% is achieved by N-GQDs, compared with the N-free GQDs, as the substitutional N has an essential role in more effective radiative emission. Excessive N dopants in N-GQDs can lead to photoluminescence quenching, through nonradiative transition back to the ground state. The N-GQDs are further found to be suitable as photocurrent conversion materials due to benign energy matching with anatase nanofibers, the ultrafast electron injection at their interface, and efficient electron transfer. This work provides an efficient and inspiring approach to engineering both chemical components and physical properties of N-GQDs, and will therefore promote their basic research and applications in energy conversion.

Abstract:Here, nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) were successfully synthesized by the solvothermal method using graphite as the carbon source and N,N-dimethylformamide as the nitrogen source. We characterized the structure and chemical constitution of N-CQDs using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We investigated the pump- and temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) properties and the dynamic exciton recombination processes of N-CQDs, using both steady-state and time-resolved PL techniques. The spectral results show that the PL emission peak located at 518 nm at room temperature, mainly originates from the n - p * transition on the surface of N-CQDs. The pump fluence and PL integral intensity were analyzed to demonstrate the existence of single -photon excitation under the 405 nm laser excitation. As the temperature increases, the non -radiative transition gradually increases, which decreases the PL intensity, the full width at half maxima first narrows and then widens and the PL lifetime gradually decreases. Furthermore, we combined the N-CQDs with chip to prepare light-emitting diode (LED). The resulting chromaticity coordinate was obtained to be (0.29, 0.40). This study offers a comprehensive understanding of the luminescence mechanism in N-doped CQDs and introduces a novel approach for the quickly fabrication of full-color display LEDs. Abstract:Nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) exhibit exciting properties in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for ample electrocatalytic edging and N-doped active sites. However, low yield and high dispersity of N-GQDs prohibit their direct application as the electrocatalyst. In this paper, two facile hydrothermal progress were developed to synthesize the high-yield N-GQDs with the diameter of ca. 2-6nm and the hybrid of N-GQDs/Reduced Graphene Oxide (N-GQDs/r-GO). The results demonstrated that the N-GQDs/r-GO display remarkable electrocatalytic activity. Moreover, it can be found that the pyridinic-N plays a major role in ORR. Both the average electron transfer number and the onset potential depend on the content of pyridinic-N. The proposed synthesis strategy is facile and low-cost, serving as a feasible method for the development of highly efficient electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) are promising biocompatible nanomaterial which has received much attention for biological application. However, the effect of the engineered electronic structure of N-GQDs to the fluorescence of GQDs applied for bio-imaging is still under debate. In this study, N-GQDs were synthesized by a facile one-step hydrothermal method for 10 hours at 180°C and theoretical calculation of electronic structure using density functional theory (DFT) by GAUSSIAN 09, were compared. Single to multilayer of N-GQDs with the particle size of 3.2 nm in average were obtained from hydrothermal synthesis. The optical properties of N-GQDs emitted green photoluminescence (PL) at 525 nm (2.36 eV) with PL excitation (PLE) at 367 nm (3.38 eV). From DFT calculation, the optoelectronic properties of GQDs from HOMO to LUMO differ between edge functionalization and graphitic nitrogen doping. Furthermore, cells cytotoxity showed that N-GQDs possess non-toxic property, and the cells were presented with high viability. In summary, by comparing experimental and theoretical calculations, the electronic properties of N-GQDs could enhance their reactivity in photo-electronics for biological application.

Abstract:Sulfur-doped graphene quantum dots (S-GQDs) were synthesized by two facile hydrothermal technologies. The photoluminescence (PL) properties of the GQDs and S-GQDs samples were mainly investigated. Through regulating the content of S powders in S-GQDs synthesizing process, the optimal S-GQDs have a high S/C atomic ratio of 19.53%. The S doping introduce more functional groups on the C sp2 skeleton of S-3 sample and result in the appearance of the strong absorption band in the UV region. In comparison with other reported S-GQDs, the S-GQDs exhibit overwhelming high fluorescence quantum yield (57%) and excitation-independent emission, resulting from the outcome of the doped sulfur atoms. Moreover, the PL intensity of GQDs can be increased by doping it with S and the increasing efficiency depends on the thiophene sulfur content.

Abstract:A novel graphitic carbon nitride based quantum dots with controllable fluorescence emission wavelength were prepared by changing the primary framework of tri-s-triazine structure. Electron-rich heterocycle embedding of carbon nitride quantum dots with pyrimidine donors effectively increased the conjugation effect of electrons on triazine ring. More importantly, with the increase of asymmetrical heterocycle structures, the fluorescence emission peaks of the quantum dots gradually shifted from 425 nm to 575 nm, and the maximum fluorescence wavelength red shifted 700 nm. The maximum fluorescence quantum yield of this modified quantum dots is up to 22.39%. Those quantum dots have the advantages of improved water solubility and biocompatibility.

Abstract:Sulfur-doped graphene quantum dots (S-GQDs) decorated with high-quantum-yield titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanocomposite are synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. Photoluminescence characterization shows that S-GQDs exhibit stronger absorption peaks at ultraviolet (UV) region than GQDs. Photocatalytic activity of the obtained S-GQD/TiO2 nanocomposite reaches 70% in 8 min; this activity is significantly enhanced compared with those of GQDs/TiO2 and pure TiO2. Improved UV light absorption and effective transfer of photogenerated electrons can be attributed to integration of S-GQDs with TiO2 in a cladding manner. The present work provides a new approach for development of attractive GQD-based nanocomposites with controllable structures and photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:A very simple electrochemical top-down procedure was employed to obtain pure graphene quantum dots (GQDs) in water and using only graphite as carbonaceous precursor. The graphitic structure of the GQDs has been clearly observed by high-resolution transmission electronic microscopy (HRTEM). Then, the synthesis of N-doped GQDs was allowed by the addition of ammonia in the solution. The nitrogen doping was plainly evidenced by X-ray photoelectron (XPS) and Raman spectroscopies. The role of the electrolytic solution employed during the synthesis has been also discussed. Finally, these N-doped and non-doped GQDs were further used to prepare hybrids by grafting them onto ZnO semi-conductors, and their photocatalytic properties towards water-splitting were investigated. Interestingly, a very important enhancement of the amount of dihydrogen produced was observed with N-doped GQDs, compared to ZnO alone or to hybrids prepared with non-doped GQDs.
