Abstract:The formation of type II heterostructures is proved to be an effective method to improve the photocatalytic performance of semiconductors. In this report, a surface functionalization method using 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) as the surface functionalizing agent was adopted for the fabrication of Bi2WO6/MS (M = Cd and Zn) heterostructures. The composition and microstructures of the as-prepared heterostructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The as-prepared Bi2WO6/CdS and Bi2WO6/ZnS heterostructures exhibit enhanced photocatalytic activities for the degradation of Rhodamine B (Rh B) as compared to pure Bi2WO6, CdS, ZnS nanoparticles and Degussa P25. The enhanced photocatalytic activities of the as-prepared heterostructures may relate to the effective electron-hole separation during the photocatalytic process. A series of scavengers (benzoquinone for O-2(center dot-), ammonium oxalate for h(+), AgNO3 for e(-), and t-BuOH for (OH)-O-center dot) were employed to investigate the possible mechanism of the photocatalytic process. The results clearly indicate that the photogenerated holes are the main active species during the photocatalytic process.
Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity of Bi24O31Br10: Constructing Heterojunction with BiOI

Abstract:Bismuth-based compounds have been regarded as an important class of visible-light photocatalysts due to their special electronic structures. In this paper, iodide ions are introduced to modify bismuth-based compound, Bi 24 O 31 Br 10 , forming a Bi 24 O 31 Br 10 /BiOI heterojunction structure. A significant enhancement of photocatalytic activity compared to the parent compounds is observed in de-coloration of rhodamine B（Rh.B） solution. The improved photocatalytic property of Bi 24 O 31 Br 10 /BiOI heterojunction is ascribed to the unique electronic structure consisting of complementary band structures of BiOI and Bi 24 O 31 Br 10 .Iodide ions are regarded as an effective reagent to construct bismuth-based photocatalytic heterojunctions with improved photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Construction of vertical heterostructures by stacking two‐dimensional (2D) layered materials via chemical bonds can be an effective strategy to explore advanced solar‐energy‐conversion systems. However, it remains a great challenge to fabricate such heterostructures based on conversional oxide‐based compounds, as they either do not possess a 2D layered structure or are not suitable for epitaxial growth due to large lattice mismatch. Here, a vertical heterostructure of bismuth oxyhalide semiconductors fabricated through a heteroepitaxial anion exchange method is reported. Monolayer Bi2WO6 is epitaxially grown on the exposed surface of BiOI to inhibit photocorrosion and introduce active sites. Theoretical and experimental results reveal that electrons generated under visible‐light irradiation can directly transfer to surface coordinatively unsaturated (CUS) Bi atoms, which contribute to the adsorption and activation of reactant molecules. As a result, the Bi2WO6/BiOI vertical heterostructures exhibit significantly enhanced visible‐light‐driven NO oxidation activity compared with BiOI and Bi2WO6.

Abstract:In this work, we provide a facile method to synthesize Bi2O4/Bi2WO6 heterojunction by a two-step hydrothermal. Bi2O4 micro-rods are in-situ generated on the surface of Bi2WO6 microspheres. Compared to pure Bi2WO6, the photocatalytic activity for the Bi2O4/Bi2WO6 heterojunction was enhanced 5 folds in degradation of Rhodamine B. In the degradation of Methyl Orange, the enhanced factor could reach to 90 folds under visible light. The superior activity could be attributed to the rapid separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carries, which could be proved by photocurrent test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Moreover, the active material trapping experiments proved that ·O2− and h+ are the main active species in the degradation process. The present work provides a new sight for the fabricating of visible light-driven photocatalyst with high efficiency.

Abstract:The photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance of bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ) suffers from sluggish charge mobility and substantial charge recombination losses due to its intrinsic defect. To rectify the problem, we developed a novel approach to prepare an n - n + type II BVO ac -BVO al homojunction with staggered band alignment. This architecture involves a built-in electric field that facilitating the electron-hole separation at the BVO ac /BVO al interface. As a result, the BVO ac -BVO al homojunction shows superior photocurrent density up to 3.6 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) with 0.1 M sodium sulfite as the hole scavenger, which is 3 times higher than that of the single-layer BiVO 4 photoanode. Unlike the previous efforts that modifying the PEC performance of BiVO 4 photoanodes through incorporating heteroatoms, the highly-efficient BVO ac -BVO al homojunction was achieved without incorporating any heteroatoms in this work. The remarkable PEC activity of the BVO ac -BVO al homojunction highlights the tremendous importance of reducing the charge recombination rate at the interface by constructing the homojunction and offers an effective strategy to form the heteroatoms-free BiVO 4 thin film as an efficient photoanode material for practical PEC applications.

In-situ preparation of S-scheme BiOI/BiVO4 heterojunctions with enhanced photocatalytic performance

Abstract:Close interfacial contact between two photocatalysts can effectively separate photoexcited carriers, improving photocatalytic capacity of the photocatalysts. Herein, S-scheme BiOI/BiVO4 composites were successfully synthesized by a two-step synthetic strategy with the existence of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide ([EMIm]I), NH4VO3 and Bi(NO3)3⋅5H2O. [EMIm]I serves as a solvent to provide iodine source for the heterojunctions to produce small lamellar BiOI anchored on BiVO4. Electrochemical and surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPS) measurements confirm that S-scheme heterojunctions greatly inhibits the recombination of photoinduced carriers. Photocatalytic removal rate constant of rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline (TC) by BiOI/BiVO4 composites is significantly enhanced with visible light, the 5% sample exhibits the highest photocatalytic performance, which is 14.7 and 4.1 times of that of the reference BiVO4 for removal of RhB and TC, separately. The 5% sample can effectively treat Chinese Baijiu industrial wastewater obtained from a local brewery, the removal of total organic carbon (TOC) of the wastewater can achieve about 76% after visible light irradiation for 4 h. Cyclic experiments show that the BiOI/BiVO4 heterojunctions exhibit outstanding stability. The fabricated BiOI/BiVO4 heterojunctions with high activity and persistence have potential applications in water purification. This work proffers a significant reference for in-situ fabrication of S-scheme heterojunctions using ionic liquid.

Zno/Bioi Heterostructures: Photoinduced Charge-Transfer Property and Enhanced Visible-Light Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:In this study, ZnO/BiOI heterostructures were synthesized by a facile chemical bath method at low temperature. Control of the morphology and constituents of the ZnO/BiOI heterostructures was realized by simply tuning the Bi/Zn molar ratios. The resulting ZnO/BiOI heterostructures exhibited high photocatalytic activity in the degradation of methyl orange under visible-light irradiation. The high photocatalytic activity of the ZnO/BiOI heterostructures was first attributed to their high surface area. Surface photovoltage spectroscopy and transient photovoltage measurements revealed that the photoinduced charge-transfer property of p-type BiOI could be improved greatly by coupling with n-type ZnO. The heterojunction at the interface between the BiOI and ZnO could efficiently reduce the recombination of photoinduced electron hole pairs to increase the lifetime of charge carriers by 15 times and thus enhance the photocatalytic activity of the ZnO/BiOI heterostructures, in addition to the high surface area This study reveals that the heterostructure construction between two different semiconductors plays a very important role in determining the dynamic properties of their photogenerated charge carriers and their photocatalytic propertis.

Abstract:The BiVO4/WO3 heterostructure material is promising photoanode architecture in photoelectrocatalysis hydrogen generation system. However, most studies focused on the relationship between BiVO4/WO3 heterostructure material preparation method, morphology design, heteroatom doping and efficiency. Its internal mechanism and interface engineering have not been investigated in theory. In this work, these questions are answered by exploring the structure, electronic and optical properties of the system, as well as investigating the band arrangement and charge transfer when the interfacial interaction goes from van der Waals form to binding form. The binding form occurs when WO3 slab and BiVO4 slab are close enough to form a coherent boundary. It is found that the combination of WO3 and BiVO4 can form a heterostructure of type-II energy band arrangement and the formation of built-in electric field at the interface, which allows for better photogenerated charge carrier separation. When the interface binding form appears, the interface channel effect makes the maximum effective electron accumulation more than 4 times that of van der Waals form. Our work not only provides a perspicacious understanding of the photoexcited carrier separation mechanism for BiVO4/WO3 heterostructure, but also sheds light on exploring interfacial interaction in other heterostructure semiconductor materials.

The synthesis involves a facile anion exchange process by reacting pre-synthesized BiVO4 discoid-like particles with Na2S in an aqueous solution. Benefiting from the unique structural features and the formation of heterostructure, the as-prepared BiVO4/Bi2S3 hollow discoids exhibit significantly enhanced photoelectrochemical current response and photocatalytic activity for reduction of Cr-VI under visible-light illumination.

Abstract:Bismuth vanadate is a promising semiconductor for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation under visible light. Yet its PEC performance is limited by its poor electron-transfer mobility. In this study we modified the BiVO4 surface with Zn to address this problem. We used a ZnO coating and etching treatment to dope Zn atoms at the surface of BiVO4 by replacing the Bi atoms. The surface Zn doping treatment lowered the Fermi level of the outer part of BiVO4 (surface) and formed a BiVO4/Zn:BiVO4 homojunction with a typeII band alignment with the inner part of BiVO4 (bulk). With this homojunction, the charge transfer process across the depletion region of the BiVO4 electrode was improved and the surface trapping of photogenerated electrons was avoided, which led to an enhanced PEC performance.

Abstract:BiVO4/TiO2 nanocomposites were fabricated by a facile wet-chemical process, followed by the synthesis of TiO2 hierarchical spheres via hydrothermal method. The BiVO4/TiO2 nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results showed that prepared TiO2 presented hierarchical spherical morphology self-assembled by nanoparticles and an anatase–brookite mixed crystal phase. The introduction of monoclinic BiVO4 components retained the hierarchical structures and expanded the light response to around 510 nm. Type II BiVO4/TiO2 heterostructured nanocomposites exhibited improved photocatalytic degradation towards methylene blue under visible-light irradiation, especially for the composite photocatalysts with atomic Ti/Bi = 10, which showed double degradation rate than that of pure BiVO4. The enhanced photocatalytic mechanism of the heterostructured BiVO4/TiO2 nanocomposites was discussed as well.

Abstract:BiVO4–Bi2O3 p–n heterojunction composites have been prepared via a facile one-step hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction revealed the as-obtained composites are composed of BiVO4 and Bi2O3 both with monoclinic structures. Subsequently, the photocatalytic activity of composites was evaluated by degradation of Rhodamine B under visible light irradiation. The results indicated that the photocatalytic activity of BiVO4–Bi2O3 composites (BV-1.3) was approximately 3 times higher than that of pure BiVO4. The enhanced photocatalytic property may mainly due to the high separation efficiency of electron–hole pairs caused by the p–n heterojunction.
BiVO4/CuBi2O4 heterojunction photoanodes with enhanced charge separation for efficient photoelectrochemical water splitting

Abstract:BiVO4/CuBi2O4 photoanodes were fabricated by depositing CuBi2O4 layers on top of BiVO4 layers while employing a solution-based deposition technique. Carrier separation and transfer are facilitated by the heterojunction that forms between BiVO4 and CuBi2O4, which significantly raises carrier density. Time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL), UV–VIS absorption spectra, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed for the characterization of the photoelectrode. The heterojunction photoelectrode demonstrated enhanced photoelectrochemical activity in comparison to BiVO4 alone, with the maximum photocurrent density of 1.15 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE. The improvement is attributed to decreased recombination of photo-generated electrons and holes and improved charge separation and transport in the heterostructure. By the generation of heterojunctions, the current work offers a new avenue for the design and construction of photoanodes with high charge separation efficiencies. This may be useful for the further enhancement of PEC water-splitting performances.

Abstract:Solar energy is used as a driving force to create electron-hole pairs on the surface of electrodes, releasing hydrogen and oxygen through oxidative reductionism, which can directly generate clean energy by a lower resource and environmental costs. The novel ternary photoanode was successfully prepared by Bi nanoparticles modified on BiVO4/ZnFe2O4 heterojunction using simple and effective SILAR and impregnation reduction method. Based on the successful construction of heterostructure to accelerate the separation of electron-hole pairs, the addition of plasmonic nanoarchitectures can effectively capture photons and improve the water oxidation performance of semiconductors through the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). The ternary photoanode shows a significant improvement with bare BiVO4 photoanode, its photocurrent density reachs 2.72 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V (vs. RHE), which is 4.2 times higher than that of pure BiVO4 photoanode (0.65 mA cm−2). The IPCE and the ABPE are substantially increased by 2.7 times and 5 times higher than single component, respectively.

Abstract:Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is a promising photocatalyst material for photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutions. However, the fast recombination of photo-induced charge and insufficient light absorption often lead to poor photocatalytic performance. Herein, novel fibrous BiVO4/CdS (BVO/CdS) heterostructures are constructed by uniformly modifying caterpillar shaped electrospun BiVO4 nanofibers with controllable quantity of CdS nanoparticles through hydrothermal reaction. The absorption of visible light and separation efficiency of photo-generated charge of BiVO4 are significantly promoted after the decoration of CdS nanoparticles. As a result, the photocatalytic efficiency of the optimized BVO/CdS sample (BVO/CdS-2 stands for the sample synthesized with 0.05 mmol Cd(CH3COO)2 and CH4N2S) is 90.43%, which is 3.3 times as high as that of pure BiVO4 after 180 min irradiation under visible light, respectively. Moreover, the .O2− and .OH are the predominant active species for the degradation process indicated by scavengers added photocatalytic experiments. Due to the simple, low-cost and controllable synthetic process, the BVO/CdS heterojunctions are suitable for practical usage.

Abstract:Flowers-like structure BiOCl/BiOI heterojunctions with exposed {001} facets have been prepared by a facile one-step hydrothermal method. The 70% BiOCl/BiOI heterojunction exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity. The highly enhanced visible light photocatalytic performance was mainly ascribed to the synergistic effect of {001} crystal facets, sensitization of RhB, increasing photo absorption and heterojunctions. The synergistic effect of coupled system could open up new opportunities to develop high-performance photocatalysts for degradation of organic pollutants in water.
Atomic Interfacial Structure and Charge Transfer Mechanism on In-Situ Formed BiOI/Bi2O2SO4 P–n Heterojunctions with Highly Promoted Photocatalysis

Abstract:Developing novel and highly efficient Bi-based photocatalysts induced by visible light, and determining their interfacial mechanism represent two significant challenges in the environmental catalysis field. Herein, the preparation of bismuth oxysulfate, Bi2O2SO4, and in-situ couping with BiOI to form a novel BiOI/Bi2O2SO4 p-n heterojunction are described. The optimized BiOI/Bi2O2SO4 heterojunction exhibits remarkable photocatalytic NO oxidation under visible-light irradiation, with multifold higher activities than pristine BiOI or Bi2O2SO4. The BiOI/Bi2O2SO4 heterojunction enforces a directional charge transfer induced by the internal electric field, and substantially boosts the charge separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs at the Bi2O2SO4 and BiOI interface. The electron-rich interfacial environment promotes reactant activation and reactive oxygen species generation, and prevents the formation of toxic NO-derived by-products, resulting in superior photocatalytic activity. Considered in its entirety, the current work introduces a promising Bi-based photocatalyst and provides guidance for the rational design of highly efficient heterojunction photocatalysts.
Surface Modulation Inducing Bismuth-Rich Surface Composition in BiVO 4 for Efficient Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Abstract:Surface engineering affects the photoelectrochemical properties of multinary oxide photoelectrodes. Here, we report a simple alkaline solution treatment of the (010) faceted bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) photoanode to increase the surface ratio of bismuth to vanadium, thus improving the performance of photoelectrochemical water oxidation. This study demonstrates that the preferential vanadium dissolution occurs in an alkaline solution, resulting in a bismuth-rich surface on the outer region of the pristine BiVO4 to afford the formation of homojunction within BiVO4. The homojunction promotes the charge separation efficiency of the treated BiVO4 photoanode to reach an almost ∼100% enhancement at 1.23 VRHE under simulated sunlight. Upon further loading NiFeO x cocatalyst, the maximum applied-bias photon-to-current conversion efficiency (ABPE) of treated BiVO4 photoanode also shows a further 100% enhancement in 0.1 M KPi electrolyte. This study sheds light on the critical role of surface termination/composition on the photoelectrochemical properties of the BiVO4 photoanode. This essential surface property can be modulated through a simple strategy to improve its charge transport for efficient water oxidation.
