Abstract:The high recombination rate of photogenerated charges is the main problem that limits the photocatalytic activity of semiconductor photocatalysts. Herein, we have reported novel heterojunctions of BiOBr–carbon nitride (BiOBr–C3N4) fabricated by depositing BiOBr nanoflakes onto the surface of C3N4. These visible light responsive heterojunctions possess intimately contacted interfaces and well-aligned straddling band-structures, which are propitious to the effective separation and transfer of photogenerated charges, bringing an improved performance. Their photocatalytic activities were evaluated by degrading Rhodamine B in aqueous solution induced by visible or indoor light. The optimum photocatalytic activity of the 0.5BiOBr–0.5C3N4 heterojunction was almost 4.9 and 17.2 times as high as those of individual BiOBr and C3N4 under visible light irradiation, and 1.5 and 48.9 times as high under indoor light irradiation, respectively. Moreover, its activity was also much higher than those of TiO2 (P25), BiOBr–TiO2, and C3N4–TiO2 heterojunctions. On the basis of experimental and theoretical results, the photocatalytic mechanism was proposed, which revealed that organic molecules were mainly oxidized by holes concentrated in the valence band of C3N4. Our work highlights that the design of heterojunctions with well-aligned straddling band-structures by combining two visible light responsive semiconductors provides an efficient method to prepare new photocatalysts working with natural light.

Abstract:Construction of p-n heterostructured semiconductor photocatalysts is of great attention. Herein, BiOI-TiO2p-n heterojunction photocatalysts with different molar ratios have been successfully synthesized by ultrasonic-assisted method. On the basis of the XPS analysis, Ti-O-Bi bonds are formed between BiOI nanosheets and TiO2nanoparticles rather than a simple overlap of single material. Compared to the pure BiOI and TiO2, the BiOI-TiO2p-n heterojunctions show prominently enhanced photocatalytic activity for degradation of methyl orange (MO) under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm). Especially, 80% BiOI-TiO2possesses the highest photocatalytic reaction rate constant, which is 3.9 and 12.2 times higher than that of BiOI and TiO2, respectively. The superoxide radical species (•O2−) has been regarded as the predominant active species in the reaction process, confirmed by the trapping experiments and Electron spin resonance (ESR) results. In addition, efficient separation and transfer of photogenerated electron-hole pairs rendered by the heterojunctions are proved employing photocurrent experiments, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and photoluminescence (PL). Moreover, the positions of the conduction bands (CB) and valence bands (VB) of the samples are investigated by Mott–Schottky measurements. It can be deduced that the existence of internal electric field caused by p-n junction leads to effective separation of electron hole pairs, resulting in the production of a large number of active species for the MO degradation.

Abstract:Bismuth-based compounds have been regarded as an important class of visible-light photocatalysts due to their special electronic structures. In this paper, iodide ions are introduced to modify bismuth-based compound, Bi 24 O 31 Br 10 , forming a Bi 24 O 31 Br 10 /BiOI heterojunction structure. A significant enhancement of photocatalytic activity compared to the parent compounds is observed in de-coloration of rhodamine B（Rh.B） solution. The improved photocatalytic property of Bi 24 O 31 Br 10 /BiOI heterojunction is ascribed to the unique electronic structure consisting of complementary band structures of BiOI and Bi 24 O 31 Br 10 .Iodide ions are regarded as an effective reagent to construct bismuth-based photocatalytic heterojunctions with improved photocatalytic activity.
Multifunctional Mulberry‐like BiVO 4 −Bi 2 O 3 p‐n Heterostructures with Enhanced both Photocatalytic Reduction and Oxidation Activities

Abstract:Rationally engineered p-n heterojunctions with the extensive heterogeneous interfaces is a promising method to pursue high charge carrier mobility and excellent photocatalytic activity in a wide range of applications. A porous mulberry-like BiVO 4 -Bi 2 O 3 composite with p-n heterojunctions was synthesized via a one-pot hydrothermal approach. There exist intimate interfaces between the two semiconductors because of the in situ growth condition. The as-obtained BiVO 4 -Bi 2 O 3 heterojunction exhibit excellent photocatalytic performance not only for CO 2 and Cr(VI) reduction, but also for NO removal under visible light irradiation in contrast to pure BiVO 4 . The CH 4 and CO yields for CO 2 reduction reaches 13.16 μmol g -1 and 1.68 μmol g -1 , about 47 and 25.7 times higher than that of pure BiVO 4 , and the highest apparent rate constant is about 56 times than that of BiVO 4 in the process of Cr(VI) reduction. Further detailed characterization reveals that the enhanced and stable photocatalytic reduction and oxidation activities can be attributed to the efficient transfer and spatial separation of the photo-induced carriers, resulting from not only p-n heterojunctions with matched band structures, but also intimate contact and the abundant interfaces between BiVO 4 and Bi 2 O 3 .

Abstract:TiO2/BiOI heterostructures were prepared with BiOI nanosheets and phosphorus-doped TiO2 nanoparticles by a facile method at a low temperature. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra and X-Ray Photoelectron spectroscopy were employed to characterize the phase structures, morphologies and optical absorption properties of TiO2/BiOI p-n heterojunction. The experimental results show that BiOI nanoplates and TiO2 nanoparticles bind through chemical bonds rather than a simple mixture of the two materials. The optical absorption edge of TiO2/BiOI heterostructures was extended to more than 650nm in visible-light region. The samples exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than pure BiOI and TiO2 for the degradation of Rhodamine B under the irradiation of visible light. In addition, the photocatalytic mechanism of TiO2/BiOI heterostructures has also has been investigated in the presence of active species scavengers. The photocatalytic activity enhancement of TiO2/BiOI heterostructures could be attributed to the synergistic effect of the strong absorption in the visible region and low recombination rate of the electron-hole pairs because of the p-n heterojunction of BiOI naosheets and P-doped TiO2 nanoparticles.
Synthesis of BiOCl/TiO2 Heterostructure Composites and Their Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:The BiOCl/TiO2 heterojunction photocatalysts with varying weight ratio were synthesized through a modified sol-gel method. The prepared photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), N-2 adsorption-desorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoluminescence (PL) and UV-visible diffused reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS). The photocatalytic activities of the catalysts were evaluated using rhodamine B, tetracycline hydrochloride and formaldehyde as the target pollutants. The characterization results revealed that the BiOCl/TiO2 composite photocatalyst exhibited the higher visible-light-responsive photocatalytic performance than pure BiOCl and TiO2. The results showed that the BiOCl/TiO2 with mass ratio of 70% exhibited the optimal photocatalytic performance. The rate constant of it for rhodamine B degradation is around 11 times as high as that of the pure BiOCl and 46 times than pure TiO2. The enhanced photoactivity should be attributed to the formation of heterojunction between BiOCl and TiO2. The BiOCl/TiO2 hybrid photocatalyst exhibited higher surface area, smaller crystallite size, stronger visible light absorption and improved charge separation efficiency. The excellent activity reveals that BiOCl/TiO2 heterojunction is a promising visible-light-responsive photocatalyst. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Photocatalytic materials have shown great potential in the field of wastewater purification. Unfortunately, one major drawback is the issue of fast photogenerated charge recombination and low quantum utilization in pure photocatalysts. Constructing a p-n heterostructure represents a feasible approach for enhancing the photocatalytic activity of photocatalysts. The BiOBr/Bi2WO6 (BiOBr/BWO) p-n heterojunctions composite materials were synthesized using solvothermal method. The impact of varying BiOBr/BWO molar ratios on the structure of BWO and its photocatalytic performance was systematically investigated. The morphology results reveal that the sheet-like BWO is dispersed on the surface of the microsphere-shaped BiOBr, and the two are in close contact with each other. Photodegradation experiments results revealed that the optimal photocatalytic activity was achieved when the BiOBr/BWO molar ratio was 1:1. The first-order reaction rate constant is 0.068 min−1, which is 8.5 times higher than that of pure BWO (0.008 min−1). Mott-Schottky curves prove that BiOBr and BWO are coupled to form p-n heterojunctions. The formation of a p-n heterojunction is the key factor in enhancing the photocatalytic properties of composite materials. This heterojunction effectively inhibits the recombination of photogenerated charges and improves the utilization of quantum energy. The design of p-n heterojunctions offers a promising strategy for enhancing the application of photocatalytic materials in wastewater purification.

A High-Performance Bi2O3/Bi2SiO5 P-N Heterojunction Photocatalyst Induced by Phase Transition of Bi2O3

Abstract:In this work, Bi2O3/Bi2SiO5 p-n heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully fabricated via a facile one-step synthesis using Bi(NO3)(3) and nano-SiO2 as precursors. With the increasing amount of SiO2, alpha-Bi2O3 gradually transferred into beta-Bi2O3, and Bi2O3/Bi2SiO5 p-n heterojunction was obtained at the same time. The as-prepared samples were systematically characterized by XRD, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The Bi2O3/Bi2SiO5 heterojunction photocatalysts exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than alpha-Bi2O3 on the degradation of organic pollutants under simulated sunlight irradiation. The enhanced photocatalytic activity could be ascribed to the larger specific surface area, the larger contact angle, the formation of beta-Bi2O3 and construction of p-n heterojunction. More importantly, the phase transition mechanism of Bi2O3 in Bi2O3/Bi2SiO5 heterojunction photocatalyst was proposed, which is significant for the theoretical study and application of photocatalytic materials.
Facile Fabrication of BiOI Decorated NaNbO3 Cubes: A P–n Junction Photocatalyst with Improved Visible-Light Activity

Abstract:To enhance the separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers, a p-n junction photocatalyst BiOI/NaNbO3 has been fabricated by a facile method. The obtained samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, PL, N-2 sorption-desorption and DRS. DRS results showed that the light absorption edges of BiOI/NaNbO3 hybrids were red-shifted with the increase of BiOI content. The SEM and TEM images revealed that the BiOI was widely decorated over the surfaces of NaNbO3 cubes. The formation of p-n heterojunction at their interfaces was proved by the HRTEM image. The visible light-driven photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution. Compared with single NaNbO3 and BiOI, the BiOI/NaNbO3 hybrid photocatalysts have exhibited significantly enhanced activities. Meanwhile, the mass ratio of BiOI/NaNbO3 displayed important influence on the MB degradation. The hybrid photocatalyst with BiOI content of 40% performed the optimal activity. This activity enhancement should be attributed to the strong visible light absorption, the high migration and separation efficiency of photo-induced carriers. The photocurrent and PL measurements confirmed that the interfacial charge separation efficiency was greatly improved by coupling BiOI with NaNbO3. Controlled experiments proved that the degradation of pollutants was mainly attributed to the oxidizing ability of the generated holes (h(+)), center dot O-2(-), and center dot OH radicals. Interfacial chemical bond modulated ultrathin PbBiO2Cl/Bi2O3 Z-scheme heterojunction for promoting charge separation and enhancing photocatalytic activity

Abstract:Rational design of heterojunction can effectively promote photogenerated charge separation, which is considered to be an effective strategy to enhance the photocatalytic activity. Here, 2D ultrathin PbBiO2Cl/Bi2O3 heterojunction was synthesized in situ by glucose assisted one-step hydrothermal reaction followed by calcination. The theoretical calculations and experimental results indicate that the ultrathin PbBiO2Cl/Bi2O3 heterojunction has a direct Z-scheme band structure modulated by the interfacial chemical bonds of Pb-O and Bi-O, which can significantly improve the charge separation efficiency, thereby enhancing the photocatalytic activity. The full spectrum photocatalytic activity of the ultrathin PbBiO2Cl/Bi2O3 heterojunction is 10 and 30 times higher than that of pristine PbBiO2Cl and Bi2O3, and the visible light photocatalytic activity is 13.5 and 112.3 times higher than that of pristine PbBiO2Cl and Bi2O3, respectively. This work provides a new strategy for in situ construction of ultrathin Z-scheme heterojunction with efficient charge separation modulated by interfacial chemical bonds.

Abstract:Close interfacial contact between two photocatalysts can effectively separate photoexcited carriers, improving photocatalytic capacity of the photocatalysts. Herein, S-scheme BiOI/BiVO4 composites were successfully synthesized by a two-step synthetic strategy with the existence of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide ([EMIm]I), NH4VO3 and Bi(NO3)3⋅5H2O. [EMIm]I serves as a solvent to provide iodine source for the heterojunctions to produce small lamellar BiOI anchored on BiVO4. Electrochemical and surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPS) measurements confirm that S-scheme heterojunctions greatly inhibits the recombination of photoinduced carriers. Photocatalytic removal rate constant of rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline (TC) by BiOI/BiVO4 composites is significantly enhanced with visible light, the 5% sample exhibits the highest photocatalytic performance, which is 14.7 and 4.1 times of that of the reference BiVO4 for removal of RhB and TC, separately. The 5% sample can effectively treat Chinese Baijiu industrial wastewater obtained from a local brewery, the removal of total organic carbon (TOC) of the wastewater can achieve about 76% after visible light irradiation for 4 h. Cyclic experiments show that the BiOI/BiVO4 heterojunctions exhibit outstanding stability. The fabricated BiOI/BiVO4 heterojunctions with high activity and persistence have potential applications in water purification. This work proffers a significant reference for in-situ fabrication of S-scheme heterojunctions using ionic liquid.

A Simple and Effective Method for Fabricating Novel P–n Heterojunction Photocatalyst G-C3n4/bi4ti3o12 and Its Photocatalytic Performances

Abstract:A novel g-C3N4/Bi4Ti3O12 photocatalyst with the p-n heterojunction structure was prepared through ball milling. The morphologies, structures, and optical properties of the photocatalyst were comprehensively characterized. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images and the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed the interfacial interaction between g-C3N4 and Bi4Ti3O12, indicating that a heterojunction between g-C3N4 and Bi4Ti3O12 was formed during ball milling. In addition, the optimum activity of the coupling semiconductor is higher than that of individual g-C3N4 and Bi4Ti3O12 for the degradation of acid orange-II(AO-7). The enhanced photocatalytic activity could be ascribed to the p-n junction of g-C3N4/Bi4Ti3O12 with strong oxidative ability and efficient charge separation. The highest activity was obtained in the g-C3N4/Bi4Ti3O12 p-n heterojunction using a composite of 10 wt.% g-C3N4 and 90 wt.% Bi4Ti3O12 by ball milling in 16 h. The removal of AO-7 was not only mainly initiated by valence band holes (hi), but also affected by O-center dot(2)-, which was verified by the effects of scavengers. The mechanism underlying the observed photocatalytic activity was also described based on the semiconductor energy band theory and the formation of an internal electrostatic field. Construction of p-n heterostructured BiOI/TiO2 nanosheets arrays for improved photoelectrochemical water splitting performance

Abstract:The construction of p-n heterojunction is one of the effective strategies to improve the spatial charge separation due to built-in electric field. In this study, the p-type BiOI ultrathin 2D nanoplates decorated n-type TiO2 nanosheets arrays (TNS) heterojunction photoanode was successfully fabricated through hydrothermal methods. The photocurrent density achieved for optimized BiOI/TNS photoanode was 0.54 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE, which is 15 times higher than that of unmodified TNS photoelectrode (0.036 mA cm−2) under simulated sunlight irradiation without any cocatalyst. In addition, the onset potential of BiOI/TNS photoanodes has a certain negative shift from 0.5 to 0.3 V, which can demonstrate BiOI/TNS photoanodes possesses better catalytic activity and kinetics for water oxidation. The excellent photoelectrochemical activity of BiOI/TNS could be attributed to the type-II energy structure of BiOI/TiO2 photoanode, the built-in electric field of p-n heterojunction, and TiO2 nanosheets arrays with high exposed {0 0 1} facets.

Combination of covalent-organic framework and Bi2O2S by covalent bonds to form p-n heterojunction for enhanced photocatalytic CO2 conversion

Abstract:The objective of current photocatalysis research is to increase the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers and convert CO2 into useful resources for human beings. In the present study, TpPa-2-COF was successfully grown in situ on Bi2O2S nanosheets by hydrothermal and thermal solvent two-step experimental method, and a typical p-n heterojunction was constructed by covalent-bond between TpPa-2-COF and Bi2O2S, which significantly improved the photocatalytic activity of CO2. When Bi2O2S@TpPa-2-COF-15 heterojunction was illuminated with 300 W xenon lamp for 3 h, the CO yield reached 19.5 μmol·g−1·h−1, while the CH4 yield reached 6.2 μmol·g−1·h−1. Compared with pure TpPa-2-COF and Bi2O2S, the photocatalytic activity of the Bi2O2S@TpPa-2-COF-15 increased 66.8 and 3.96 times, respectively. Meanwhile, the Bi2O2S@TpPa-2-COF-15 composite showed good stability under multiple cycles. Furthermore, the mechanism of Bi2O2S@TpPa-2-COF heterojunction enhanced photocatalytic reduction of CO2 was also proposed. The experimental and characterization findings have shown that the transit of photo-generated electron-hole pairs via TpPa-2-COF to Bi2O2S may be greatly promoted to achieve the effect of electron hole separation under visible-light irradiation.

Abstract:In the realm of photocatalysis, understanding the interface issues (solid/solid and solid/liquid) inherent in heterojunction at the atomic level is the ultimate for engineering an efficient photocatalyst. Herein, an electrophoretic deposition technique is adopted to synthesize BiOI/β-Bi 2 O 3 heterojunction, exhibiting superior photocatalytic activity and stability in H 2 evolution (91.5 μmol g –1 h –1 ) and H 2 O 2 production (11.3 mg L –1 h –1 ). Combined with the experimental and computational results, a lower free energy of hydrogen evolution reaction (252.4 meV) has been observed contrast to BiOI and β-Bi 2 O 3 samples. A carrier transfer process of like S-scheme heterojunction is proposed based on density of states (DOS) and carrier distribution calculations. The theoretical calculations illustrate the transition dipole moment, migration and accumulation of carrier in BiOI/β-Bi 2 O 3 heterojunction. Subsequent ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) results of solid/liquid interface systems (BiOI/β-Bi 2 O 3 /H 2 O and β-Bi 2 O 3 /H 2 O) unravel the interface H 2 O (solvent) behaviors. The local aggregation of photo-generated electrons in BiOI/β-Bi 2 O 3 /H 2 O leads to a large potential drop, high proton migration rate and the steady electric double layer (EDL) structure compared to the β-Bi 2 O 3 /H 2 O, which facilitates the occurrence of photocatalytic reactions in solution. In addition to offering new insights into the hydrogen evolution and proton transfer in the EDL model and the association between the heterojunction effect and EDL structure, this work also introduces a novel design strategy for Bi-based heterojunctions.

Abstract:An efficient and facile method to fabricate a surficial dispersive heterojunction based on the assembly of g-C3N4 nanoparticles was proposed. A p-n nano heterojunction composed of BiOI and g-C3N4 was constructed by simply loading g-C3N4 nanoparticles on flower-like BiOI nanosheets. The structure-dependent optical, electronic and photoelectric properties were investigated, and the structure-property relationship was discussed. The results show that the g-C3N4 nanoparticles are uniformly loaded on the surface of BiOI nanosheets and thus form a p-n heterojunction with an intimate interface. The as-prepared samples exhibit enhanced photocatalytic degradation ability towards MO under visible-light irradiation. With the unique structure and morphology, enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activities are achieved owing to the synergistic effect of light harvesting, high transfer efficiency and enhanced separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers.

Abstract:As 2D heterojunction photocatalysts, lateral heterojunctions (LHs) formed based on chemical bonding generally exhibit much higher photocarrier separation efficiency than vertical heterojunctions (VHs) formed by van der Waals bonds. However, little is known about the different detailed interfacial structures and photocarrier separation mechanisms of the two heterojunctions. Herein, 2D BiOCl and Bi4O5I2 were selected as model building blocks to construct BiOCl/Bi4O5I2 VHs and LHs. The LHs with direct charge carrier transport channels show stronger interfacial electric field and higher charge transfer efficiency than the VHs. The photogenerated charge carrier migration pathway in the LHs follows a Z-scheme model, while the VHs fits a type II model. As a result, the BiOCl/Bi4O5I2 LHs exhibited higher redox performance than the VHs, which is 1.55, 1.56 and 2.1 times better for H2 production, Cr(VI) photoreduction and phenol photodegradation, respectively. This study demonstrates a new approach to constructing highly efficient facet-dependent 2D heterojunction photocatalysts.

Abstract:To further extend the light response range of BiPO4 and meanwhile keep its strong photocatalytic oxidation ability, the design of a type-II heterojunction by coupling BiPO4 with a narrower band gap semiconductor of Bi2SiO5 as a novel and efficient photocatalytic catalyst has been successfully realized through a simple co-precipitate method. Moreover, under 365 nm UV light irradiation, pure BiPO4 shows no photo-activity, whereas the optimal Bi2SiO5/BiPO4 heterostructure exhibits highly enhanced photocatalytic activity than pure Bi2SiO5 in systems of photo-degradation over phenol and MB, which is 4.36 times and 1.13 times the values of pure Bi2SiO5. Experimental results reveal that the superior photocatalytic performance can be attributed to the synergetic effect of the evidently improved charge separation ability via the heterojunction, good crystallinity, expanded light absorbance and the moderate BET specific surface area.
