Abstract:The realization of pseudomagnetic fields for lightwaves has attained great attention in the field of nanophotonics.Like real magnetic fields,Landau quantization could be induced by pseudomagnetic fields in the strain-engineered graphene.We demonstrated that pseudomagnetic fields can also be introduced to photonic crystals by exerting a linear parabolic deformation onto the honeycomb lattices,giving rise to degenerate energy states and flat plateaus in the photonic band structures.We successfully inspire the photonic snake modes corresponding to the helical state in the synthetic magnetic heterostructure by adopting a microdisk for the unidirectional coupling.By integrating heat electrodes,we can further electrically manipulate the photonic density of states for the uni-axially strained photonic crystal.This offers an unprecedented opportunity to obtain on-chip robust optical trans-ports under the electrical tunable pseudomagnetic fields,opening the possibility to design Si-based functional topological photonic devices.

Abstract:Our recent efforts in manipulating electromagnetic (EM) waves using metamaterials (MTMs) are reviewed with emphasis on 1) manipulating wave polarization and transporting properties using homogeneous MTMs, 2) manipulating surface-wave properties using plasmonic MTMs, and 3) bridging propagating and surface waves using inhomogeneous meta-surfaces. For all these topics, we first illustrate the physical concepts and then present several typical practical realizations and applications in the microwave regime.

Abstract:We examine manipulating electromagnetic waves in magnetic photonic crystals (MPCs) with external magnetic fields. We predict new giant magnetoreflectivity and giant magnetorefractivity effects: with an external magnetic field of a magnitude much smaller than the anisotropy field of the ferromagnet, the MPC can be changed from completely reflecting to nonreflecting with corresponding changes in the angle of refraction. Application to the storage of electromagnetic radiation is also discussed.

Abstract:Metamaterials are composite artificial materials composed of sub-wavelength resonant building blocks designed with state-of-the-art configurations, which exhibit novel and unique electromagnetic (EM) properties. The building blocks are usually made of metallic material, where surface plasmon polaritons can be excited at the interface, leading to many interesting and promising phenomena and applications. However, some drawbacks are accompanied such as intrinsic loss, narrow working frequency, and tunability limitation. We have designed a class of metamaterials composed of building blocks made of ferrite materials, it is accordingly termed magnetic metamaterials (MM). It is demonstrated that with the MM we can construct a magnetically tunable negative index material with the impedance matched to the air. The excitation of the magnetic surface plasmon (MSP) resonance can also be observed in the MM. Due to the MSP resonance and the time reversal symmetry breaking nature of the MM, the unidirectional waveguiding of the EM wave is demonstrated.

Abstract:We demonstrate a flexibly controllable molding of electromagnetic waves by designing magnetic metamaterials and metasrufaces with an array of ferrite rods under a particularly arranged bias magnetic field. The manipulation is accomplished for both the spatially propagating waves and the surface waves confined at the interface. Nonreciprocal properties associated with the magnetic surface plasmon resonance can be observed as well.

Abstract:We show that the polarization states of electromagnetic waves can be manipulated through reflections by an anisotropic metamaterial plate, and all possible polarizations (circular, elliptic, and linear) are realizable via adjusting material parameters. In particular, a linearly polarized light converts its polarization completely to the cross direction after reflection under certain conditions. Microwave experiments were performed to successfully realize these ideas and results are in excellent agreement with numerical simulations.

Abstract:We demonstrate that it is possible to mold the flow of an electromagnetic (EM) beam in a magnetic photonic crystal by the application of a nonuniform external static magnetic field (ESMF). The beam bending can be understood and explained by analyzing the isofrequency (IF) curves. The effect of the ESMF on the shape and size of the IF curves enables the manipulation of the group velocity of the beam, resulting in the bending of the EM beam and creating a mirage effect.

Abstract:We have investigated a kind of metamaterials consisting of an array of ferrite rods, which possess intrinsic magnetic response, thus termed magnetic metamaterials (MMs). It is demonstrated that a Gaussian beam striking the interface of an MM slab exhibits nonreciprocal reflection and absorption due to the excitation of the nonreciprocal magnetic surface plasmon. By combing two MM slabs of opposite magnetization together, a one-way waveguide robust against position and size disorders as well as the inhomogeneity of an external magnetic field can be constructed as corroborated from both theoretical and experimental points of view.

Abstract:We examine manipulating the electromagnetic (EM) wave with an external static magnetic field (ESMF) taking advantage of the versatility of the magnetic photonic crystal (PC). The effect of a nonuniform ESMF on the permeability of the constituent magnetic material in the PC is demonstrated to create a gradient of the effective optical index in the crystal, leading to the focusing of the EM wave, with a magnetically tunable focal length, focused waist radius, and the intensity at the focus.
Nonreciprocal electromagnetic wave manipulation via a single reflection

Abstract:Electric field manipulation plays a key role in applications such as electron acceleration, nonlinear light-matter interaction, and radiation engineering. Nonreciprocal materials, such as Weyl semimetals, enable the manipulation of the electric field in a full photonic manner, owing to their intrinsic time-reversal symmetry breaking, leading to asymmetric material response for photons with +k and -k momenta. Here, the results suggest that a simple planar interface between semi-infinite air and a nonreciprocal material can achieve spatio-temporal manipulation of the electric field. In particular, this work presents three compelling scenarios for electromagnetic wave manipulation: radiation pattern redistribution (with closed-form expressions provided), carrier-envelope phase control, and spatial profile control. The presented results pave the way for electric field manipulation using pattern-free nonreciprocal materials.

Abstract:Metamaterial which usually possesses material constitutive parameters not obtained with natural material becomes a hot research topic recently.Its designabilty and flexible tunability of the electromagnetic(EM)properties can be utilized to manipulate EM wave propagation.In this paper,we propose a variety of functional materials and devices that could manipulate the EM waves through metamaterials,including device that enables asymmetric EM wave propagation,tunable EM wave absorber,EM wave polarization modulator,magnetic photonic crystal,magnetic left-handed materials as well as the terahertz metamaterials based on superconductor thin films.Due to their specific and designable characteristics,these devices could have novel functionality and superior performances,enhancing the ability of EM wave manipulation.

Abstract:In this presentation, we will demonstrate some examples of applying the transformation optics to the manipulation of electromagnetic radiations from antenna or antenna array. By designing through different kinds of coordinate transformations, the radiation direction of an omni-directional antenna could be modulated through a metamaterial cylindrical shell, and conformal antenna array located on an arbitrary curved surface could be modulated to a planar array by covering with properly designed metamaterial structure. The validity of the proposed wave manipulations have been verified through two dimensional full-wave numerical simulations based on the finite element method. The electromagnetic wave manipulation through metamaterials provides alternative ways to steer electromagnetic irradiation and may find novel applications in microwave antenna technology.

Abstract:The control of magnetic fields underpins a wide variety of cutting-edge technologies, ranging from the guiding of micro-robots for medical applications to the trapping of atoms for quantum experiments. Relying on different arrangements of coils, these technologies demand advances in the manipulation of magnetic fields at a distance from the sources that generate them. Here, we present a strategy for remotely shaping magnetic fields based on active magnetic metamaterials with negative permeability and we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate the possibility of emulating and cancelling magnetic sources at distance. Our strategy provides magnetic field focusing deep into physically inaccessible volumes where neither sources of magnetic field nor magnetic materials can be placed.

Abstract:Acoustic metasurfaces, exhibiting superior performance with subwavelength thickness, are ideal alternatives for functionalities such as wavefront modulation and acoustic energy trapping, etc. However, most of the reported acoustic metasurfaces were passive. Here a magnetically tuned mechanism is reported for membrane-type acoustic metamaterials. Harnessing the geometric nonlinearity of membrane structures, the transmission spectrum is both theoretically and experimentally tuned over broadband by an external static magnetic force. Simultaneously, the phase profiles can be readily tailored by the magnetic stimulus. Further, a magnetic-control multifunctional metasurface is proposed for low-frequency wave manipulation. By switching the magnetic force distribution, multi extraordinary phenomena, such as acoustic wave redirecting, focusing, bending, etc., are realized without changing the physical structure. Besides, it is demonstrated the proposed metasurface, at deep subwavelength scale (~1/85λ), supports anomalous reflected wave manipulation over a wide band. These results open up new degrees of freedom to steer acoustic wave and pave a way for designing active acoustic devices.

Abstract:Using the coordinate transformation theory, we propose a way to control the field distribution of electromagnetic wave in a waveguide filling with properly designed transformation media. The results show that the field distribution of the electromagnetic wave can be compressed and amplified in both longitudinal and transverse direction. A realizable layered waveguide based on the discrete optical transformation is also designed to manipulate the field distribution of the electromagnetic wave. Potential applications, i.e., turn a narrow (wide) slit into a large (small) window, are investigated in detail. (C)2010 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Zero-index material is a typical metamaterial with an effective zero refractive index, possessing a variety of exotic electromagnetic properties and particular functionalities. We have considered two kinds of zero-index materials with the first one a nearly matched zero index made of magnetic metamaterial and the second one a radially anisotropic zero index. The magnetic metamaterial-based systems are shown to be significant in wavefront engineering and flexibly tunable by an external magnetic field and a temperature field. The radially anisotropic zero-index-based systems can remarkably enhance the omnidirectional isotropic radiation by enclosing a line source and a dielectric particle within a shell configuration. The physical origin lies in that the dielectric particle effectively rescatters the trapped anisotropic higher order modes and converts them into the isotropic 0th order mode radiated outside the system. The case for the system with the loss is then examined and the energy compensation with a gain particle is also demonstrated.

Abstract:In this work, we show how to manipulate the electromagnetic wave at will by using an indefinite medium with extremely strong anisotropy. The negative element in the indefinite permittivity tensor goes to the negative infinity while the positive element is equal to 1, which stretches the hyperbolic equifrequency contour into a straight line type. The direction of the Poynting vector and the wave vector is aligned by the straight line type equifrequency contour along the orientation of the extremely negative permittivity, thus control the wave propagation. The other permittivity of 1 makes the indefinite medium matched with the air. Moreover, because of the hyperbolic equifrequency contour, evanescent wave can also transmit in the indefinite medium under the propagation mode, implying the possibility of controlling an evanescent wave by this special indefinite medium. Simulations are performed to demonstrate the controlling performance and a potential design to realize such a medium by metamaterial with multilayered metal/dielectric structure. This work may supply a shortcut for those former devices based on the Transformation optics.

Abstract:Metamaterials are typically engineered by arranging a set of unit cells in a regular array throughout a region of space, thus, obtaining some desirable macroscopic electromagnetic behavior. The desired property is often one that is not normally found naturally (negative refractive index, near-zero index, etc.). Over the past few years, the flexibilities of the metamaterials in choosing the numerical value of the effective permittivity or permeability have led to kinds of novel theoretical and practical possibilities for different applications, ranging from microwave to optical regime. In this paper, the theoretical mechanism for constructing metamaterials is described, and the unique feature of electromagnetic waves can be manipulated is verified by their applicability to construct various devices or components Some typical application is given, including: (1) novel RF devices realized by optical transformation principle, such as energy concentrators and universal waveguide connectors; (2) metamaterial-based wave absorbers; (3) gain enhancement approach of aperture antennas by planar metamaterial lenses loaded; (4) ultra-thin lenses with dual-polarization filtering features; and (5) beam tunable antennas by metamaterial device. Undoubtely, the reported results suggest promising applications in the next-generation communication system.
Permutation Decoding and the Stopping Redundancy Hierarchy of Linear Block Codes

Abstract:We investigate the stopping redundancy hierarchy of linear block codes and its connection to permutation decoding techniques. An element in the ordered list of stopping redundancy values represents the smallest number of possibly linearly dependent rows in any parity-check matrix of a code that avoids stopping sets of a given size. Redundant parity-check equations can be shown to have a similar effect on decoding performance as permuting the coordinates of the received codeword according to a selected set of automorphisms of the code. Based on this finding we develop new decoding strategies for data transmission over the binary erasure channel that combine iterative message passing and permutation decoding in order to avoid errors confined to stopping sets. We also introduce the notion of s-SAD sets, containing the smallest number of automorphisms of a code with the property that they move any set of not more than s erasures into positions that do not correspond to stopping sets within a judiciously chosen parity-check matrix.

Abstract:We demonstrated that non-reciprocal wave propagation could be manipulated by a magnetic rod chain under bias DC magnetic fields. Made of ferrite material YIG and designed working in the microwave X-band, the rod chain exhibited almost a total reflection when the incident wave obliquely impinged on the rod chain, but exhibited nearly a total transmission when the wave reversed its propagation direction. The non-reciprocal wave propagation was due to the non-reciprocal diffraction of the rod chain for the orders 0 and ± 1. Further, the non-reciprocal wave propagation was directly observed by using the field mapping technique. The unique non-reciprocal wave property of the magnetic rod chain provides a new way to control the flow of EM waves.
