Abstract:Nanoscale zero‐valent iron (nZVI) has high removal efficiency and strong reductive ability to organic contaminants, but this reactivity soon ceases and is attributed to rapid passivation of the nZVI surface due to the formation of iron oxides. In the present study, bimetallic palladium‐zero valent iron nanoparticles were activated with sodium citrate (SC‐nPd/Fe) to enhance 2,4‐D dechlorination from aqueous solutions. FTIR and XRD analyses showed that there was no passivation layer on the surface of nZVI after the addition of SC, and XPS analysis confirmed the nZVI after the reaction still maintained high reactivity and surface Pd ratio. The existence of SC facilitated the transfer of electrons from Fe0 to contaminants, thus accelerating the reductive dechlorination of 2,4‐D. The dechlorination efficiency of 2,4‐D on nPd/Fe was only 56.4% in 210 min, while complete dechlorination could be achieved on SC‐nPd/Fe under the same conditions, and simultaneously 97.1% of phenoxyacetic acid (PA) was generated. Moreover, the effect of reaction conditions on the dechlorination such as Pd ratio, SC dosage, initial pH and temperature was also investigated, and it was well described by pseudo‐first‐order kinetic model. In particular, The chelating abilities of SC is similar to EDTA, but it is an environmentally‐friendly chelating agent. Findings from the present study suggested that the SC could be a promising substitute for application in the remediation of 2,4‐D contained water.
Reductive Dechlorination of 2,4-Dichlorophenol by Pd/Fe Nanoparticles Prepared in the Presence of Ultrasonic Irradiation.

Abstract:Palladium/Iron (Pd/Fe) nanoparticles were prepared by using ultrasound strengthened liquid phase reductive method to enhance dispersion and avoid agglomeration. The dechlorination of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) by Pd/Fe nanoparticles was investigated to understand its feasibility for an in situ remediation of contaminated groundwater. Results showed that 2,4-DCP was first adsorbed by Pd/Fe nanoparticles, then quickly reduced to o-chlorophenol (o-CP), p-chlorophenol (p-CP), and finally to phenol (P). The induction of ultrasound during the preparation of Pd/Fe nanoparticles further enhanced the removal efficiency of 2,4-DCP, as a result, the phenol production rates increased from 65% (in the absence of ultrasonic irradiation) to 91% (in the presence of ultrasonic irradiation) within 2h. Our data suggested that the dechlorination rate was dependent on various factors including Pd loading percentage over Fe(0), Pd/Fe nanoparticles availability, temperature, mechanical stirring speed, and initial pH values. Up to 99.2% of 2,4-DCP was removed after 300min reaction with these conditions: Pd loading percentage over Fe(0) 0.3wt.%, initial 2,4-DCP concentration 20mgL(-1), Pd/Fe dosage 3gL(-1), initial pH value 3.0, and reaction temperature 25°C. The degradation of 2,4-DCP followed pseudo-first-order kinetics reaction and the apparent pseudo-first-order kinetics constant was 0.0468min(-1).

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate reductive dechlorination of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) by nanoscale Fe0 under different conditions.METHODS:Nanoscale Fe0 was synthesized by using reductive method. 4-CP and its intermediate products were analyzed by HPLC. Chlorine ion was quantified with DX-100 ion chromatograph. Nano-iron particles were observed under a FEI Quanta 200 FEG environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM).RESULTS:The size of the particles was in the range of 10-100 nm. The nano-iron particles could reduce 4-CP effectively. The initial concentration of 4-CP increased with the decrease of the relative degradation rate, whereas the reduced amount of 4-CP increased. Temperature could influence both the dechlorination rate and the reaction pathway. Moreover, the stability and durability of nanoscale Fe0 was evaluated through batch studies over extended periods of time.CONCLUSION:The nanoscale Fe0 can be used for sustainable treatment of contaminants in groundwater.

Abstract:Chlorophenols, as a kind of important contaminants in groundwater, are toxic and difficult to biodegrade. Laboratory tests were conducted to examine zero-valent iron as an enhancing agent in the dechlorination of chlorinated organic compounds. Nanoscale iron particles were synthesized from common precursors KBH4 and FeSO4. Batch experiments were performed to investigate the reduction of p-chlorophenol (4-CP) by both common Fe0 and nanoscale Fe0. Comparison of 300mesh/100mesh/commercial reductive iron powders showed that size of iron particles played an important role in reduction process. Initial concentration and pretreatment of iron particles also influenced the chlorination rate. Nanoscale Fe0 offered much more advantages for treatment of 4-CP compared with common iron particles, such as stability and durability. And they can be used to treat contaminants in groundwater over a long time. Among different parts of synthesized nanoscale iron particle solution, the very fine particles were the major agent for treatment of pollutants. As for preservation of nanoscale Fe0, ethanol was recommended.

Abstract:In this study, magnetic Pd/Fe nanoparticles were synthesized using nanoscale Fe3O4 (nFe3O4) and nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) to significantly enhanced 2,4-DCP dechlorination. nFe3O4 was found to restrain the formation of passivated layer on nZVI surface and promoted the electron transfer. Earlier, only 35.8% 2,4-DCP (Cinitial=20mgL-1) was removed by 3.0gL-1 Pd/Fe nanoparticles, whereas it remarkably increased to 76.4% by magnetic nanocomposites (2.0gL-1 nFe3O4 and 3.0gL-1 Pd/Fe). A satisfactory long-term stability of nFe3O4-Pd/Fe was exhibited and the 2,4-DCP removal efficiency reached to 100%, 100%, 93.5%, 93.0%, and 90.1% in five consecutive cycles, respectively. Moreover, the nanocomposites were easily separated from the solution after reaction and that reduced environment related risks of nanoparticles. Weak acidic condition was considered feasible for 2,4-DCP dechlorination. Negative co-precipitation occurred on nFe3O4-Pd/Fe surface in the presence of common dissolved anions (such as Cl-, PO43-, and HCO3-) and humic acid (HA). The 2,4-DCP dechlorination was notably accelerated by dissolved metallic ions (Fe2+, Cu2+, and Ni2+), and 2,4-DCP was completely removed in 5h reaction time. The application of nFe3O4-Pd/Fe nanocomposites could be highly effective for an in situ pollutants remediation measures. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.
Catalytic Dechlorination of 2,4-Dichlorophenol in Water by Nanoscale Pd/Fe Bimetallic System

Abstract:Nanoscale Fe and nanoscale Pd/Fe bimetallic catalysts were prepared by chemical deposition and used to treat 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) in water. These nanoscale particles are characterized by high surface area to volume ratios and high reactivity. Their BET specific surface area reaches 12.4 m 2/g. Batch experiments demonstrate that the nanoscale Pd/Fe particles can effectively dechlorinate 2,4-DCP at a relatively low metal to solution ratio of 6 g/L. Dechlorination efficiency is 90% at a Pd to Fe mass ratio of 0.11%. Dechlorination is affected by the reaction temperature, pH, Pd/Fe ratio and amount of nanoscale Pd/Fe. 2-chlorophenol and 4-chlorophenol represent stable partially dechlorinated intermediates in the generation of phenol.

Abstract:Nanoscale Pd/Fe bimetallic particles were synthesized with an efficient. method to dechlorinate o-chlorophenol. The nanoscale Pd/Fe particles were determined by transmission electron microscopy and BET. specific surface area analysis. Most of the particles are in the size range of 20-100 nm. The BET specific surface area of synthesized nanoscale Pd/Fe particles is 12.4 m(2)/g. In contrast, a commercially available fine iron powder (<100 mesh) has a specific surface area of 0.49 m(2)/g. Batch studies demonstrated that the nanoscale particles can effectively dechlorinate o-chlorophenol. The dechlorination reaction takes place on the surface of synthesized nanoscale Pd/Fe bimetallic particles in a pseudo-first order reaction.. The surface-area-normalized rate coefficients (k(SA)) are comparable to those reported in the literature for chlorinated ethenes. The observed reaction rate constants(k(obs)) are dominated by the mass fraction of Pd and the mass concentration of the nanoscale Pd/Fe particles.

Abstract:Transformation of chlorophenols by nanoscale bimetallic particles represents one of the latest innovative technologies for environmental remediation. Nanoscale Pd/Fe bimetallic particles were synthesized in the laboratory for treatment of o-chlorophenol. Most of the nanoscale particles are in the size range of 20-100 nm. Abstract:Nanoscale Fe 0 was synthesized through a reductive method in this paper. The experiments were performed to investigate the reduction of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) by nanoscale Fe 0 under different conditions. The pathways for the reduction of 2,4-DCP by nanoscale Fe 0 were discussed. Batch studies demonstrated that the mechanism includes adsorption, dechlorination and cleavage of the benzene ring. Dechlorination, which occurs after 2,4-DCP molecule is adsorbed on the interface of Fe particle, is an interfacial reaction. One or two chlorine atom can be removed from 2,4-DCP to form 2-chlorophenol, 4-chlorophenol or phenol. As the concentration of 2,4-DCP increased, the relative dechlorination ratio decreased. However, the reduced quantities of 2,4-DCP increased. Temperature can influence dechlorination rate and pathway. Dechlorination is prior to cleavage of the benzene ring at a higher temperature, but at a lower temperature, adsorption may be the main pathway, and cleavage of the benzene ring may be prior to dechlorination.
Preparation of Functionalized Pd/Fe-Fe3O4@MWCNTs Nanomaterials for Aqueous 2,4-Dichlorophenol Removal: Interactions, Influence Factors, and Kinetics.

Abstract:Magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared to support Pd/Fe nanoparticles, inhibit the aggregation and passivation, and achieve magnetic separation to avoid the environmental risk of nanoparticles. Rapid adsorption of initial contaminant, steady dechlorination, and gradual desorption of final product was observed. The micromorphology, chemical structure, and components of the nanohybrids were comprehensively characterized by a series of analysis technologies, such as EDX, XRD, SEM, TEM, and XPS. The interactions between the nanohybrids compositions were discussed according to the characterization and experimental data. The whole insight of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) adsorption- dechlorination-desorption was studied in detail, including the pathways, influence factors, dechlorination kinetics and selectivity. Weak acidity (pH=5.0 and 6.5) favored the 2,4-DCP removal. Satisfactory reactivity of the Pd/Fe-Fe3O4@MWCNTs nanohybrids was observed in five consecutive runs, and 99.2%, 89.6%, 92.1%, 99.8%, and 99.9% of 2,4-DCP was removed, respectively. Most of the final product (phenol) was steadily desorbed to the liquid phase, resulted in the re-exposure of active sites on the nanohybrids and maintained a longer activity.

Abstract:This paper describes the synthesis of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-stabilized Pd/Fe nanoparticles and their applications to the dechlorination of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) under controlled laboratorial conditions. For this purpose batch mode experiments were conducted to understand the effects of CMC on the surface characteristics of Pd/Fe nanoparticles, optimum removal of 2,4-D and other surface interactions mechanism. Our experimental results demonstrated considerable enhancements in particle stability and chemical reactivity with the addition of CMC to Pd/Fe nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis indicated that CMC-stabilized Pd/Fe nanoparticles were well dispersed, and nanoparticles remained in suspension for days compared to non-stabilized Pd/Fe nanoparticles precipitated within minutes. The isoelectric point (IEP) of the nanoparticles shifted from pH 6.5 to 2.5, suggesting that CMC-stabilized Pd/Fe nanoparticles were negatively charged over a wider pH range. Our batch experiments demonstrated that CMC-stabilized Pd/Fe nanoparticles (0.6 g Fe L(-1)) were able to remove much higher levels of 2,4-D with only one intermediate 2-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (2-CPA) and the final organic product phenoxyacetic acid (PA), than non-stabilized Pd/Fe nanoparticles or microsized Pd/Fe particles. The removal percentage of 2,4-D increased from 10% to nearly 100% as the reaction pH decreased from 11.5 to 2.5. The optimal CMC/Fe mass ratio for the dechlorination of 2,4-D was determined to be 5/1, and the removal of 2,4-D was evidently hindered by an overdose of CMC.

Abstract:The electrochemically reductive dechlorination of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) in aqueous solution on palladium/polymeric pyrrole-cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide/foam-nickel electrode (Pd/PPy-CTAB/foam-Ni electrode) was investigated in this paper. Pd/PPy-CTAB/foam-Ni electrode was prepared and characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) adsorption and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). The influences of some experimental factors such as the dechlorination current, dechlorination time and the initial pH on the removal efficiency and the current efficiency of 2,4-DCP dechlorination on Pd/PPy-CTAB/foam-Ni electrode were studied. Complete removal of 2,4-DCP was achieved and the current efficiency of 47.4% could be obtained under the conditions of the initial pH of 2.2, the dechlorination current of 5 mA and the dechlorination time of 50 min when the initial 2,4-DCP concentration was 100 mg L(-1). The analysis of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) identified that the intermediate products were 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) and 4-chlorophenol (4-CP). The final products were mainly phenol. Its further reduction product cyclohexanone was also detected. The electrocatalytic dechlorination pathways of 2,4-DCP on Pd/PPy-CTAB/foam-Ni electrode were discussed. The stability of the electrode was favorable that it could keep dechlorination efficiency at 100% after having been reused 10 times. Results revealed that the stable prepared Pd/PPy-CTAB/foam-Ni electrode presented a good application prospect in dechlorination process with high effectiveness and low cost.
Enhanced hydrodechlorination of 4-chlorophenol through carboxymethylcellulose-modified Pd/Fe nanosuspension synthesized by one-step methods

Abstract:Palladized iron (Pd/Fe) represents one of the most common modification strategies for nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI). Most studies prepared Pd/Fe by reducing iron salts and depositing Pd species on the surface of pre-synthesized nZVI, which can be called the two-step method. In this study, we proposed a one-step method to obtain Pd/Fe by the concurrent formation of Fe 0 and Pd 0 and investigated the effects of these two methods on 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) removal, with carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) coated as a surface modifier. Results indicated that the one-step method, not only streamlined the synthesis process, but also Pd/Fe-CMC one-step , synthesized by it, exhibited a higher 4-CP removal rate (97.9%) compared to the two-step method material Pd/Fe-CMC two-step (82.4%). Electrochemical analyses revealed that the enhanced activity of Pd/Fe-CMC one-step was attributed to its higher electron transfer efficiency and more available reactive species, active adsorbed hydrogen species (H ads *). Detection of intermediate products demonstrated that, under the influence of Pd/Fe-CMC one-step , the main route of 4-CP was through hydrodechlorination (HDC) to form phenol and H* was the main active specie, supported by EPR tests, quenching experiments and product analysis. Additionally, the effects of initial 4-CP concentration, initial pH, O 2 concentration, anions such as Cl − , SO 4 2− , HCO 3 − , and humic acid (HA) were also investigated. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that Pd/Fe-CMC one-step , synthesized through the one-step method, is a convenient and efficient nZVI-modifying material suitable for the HDC of chlorinated organic compounds.

Abstract:To understand the feasibility of its application to the in situ remediation of contaminated groundwater, the dechlorination of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) by Ni/Fe nanoparticles in the presence of humic acid (HA) was investigated. We found that, as high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used, the 2,4-DCP was first quickly reduced to o-chlorophenol (o-CP) and p-chlorophenol (p-CP), and then reduced to phenol as the final product. Our experimental results indicated that HA had an adverse effect on the dechlorination of 2,4-DCP by Ni/Fe nanoparticles, as the HA concentration increased, the removal rate decreased evidently. It also demonstrated that 2,4-DCP was reduced more easily to o-CP than to p-CP, and that the sequence of the tendency in dechlorination of intermediates was p-CP > o-CP. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) showed that HA could act as an adsorbate to compete reactive sites on the surface of Ni/Fe nanoparticles to decrease the dechlorination rate. Also we concluded that the dechlorination reaction of 2,4-DCP over Ni/Fe nanoparticles progressed through catalytic reductive dechlorination.
Enhanced Catalytic Hydrodechlorination of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid by Nanoscale Zero Valent Iron with Electrochemical Technique Using a Palladium/nickel Foam Electrode

Abstract:Nanoscale zero valent iron (nZVI) particles, prepared by an in situ chemical reduction method, were employed for 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) hydrodechlorination combined with the electro-chemical method using a palladium/nickel foam (Pd/Ni foam) electrode. The nZVI particles were characterized by X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Whereas the chemi-deposited catalytic electrode was further characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and Energy dispersive X-ray. More rapid hydrodechlorination rate was observed using synergistic technology and almost all of the 2,4-D were degraded in 4 h, which was 12.5% higher than that obtained in the independent electrochemistry system. Furthermore, the reaction mechanism was discussed in terms of the mutual effect between electrochemistry and nZVI. Both of the removal efficiency and the current efficiency depended on several factors including palladium loading, nZVI dosage and current density. Small amount of nZVI dosage not only effectively improved the efficiencies but also substantially reduced the processing cost. Palladium loading and current density had a greater effect on the efficiencies. Phenoxyacetic (PA), o-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (o-CPA) and p-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (p-CPA) have been identified as transformation products in reactive medium. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:In the present study, peanut shell, a green waste raw material, was used to prepare biochar (BC) and to obtain BC‐supported nano‐palladium/iron (BC‐nPd/Fe) composites for removing 2,4‐dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4‐D) from water. Characterization analysis demonstrated that nPd/Fe particles were well dispersed on the BC surface with weakened magnetic properties. The average particle diameter and specific surface area of nPd/Fe were 101.3 nm and 6.7 m2 g−1, whereas the corresponding values of the BC‐nPd/Fe materials were 88.8 nm and 14.8 m2 g−1, respectively. Several factors were found to influence the dechlorination of 2,4‐D, including the weight ratio of BC to Fe, Pd loading ratio, initial solution pH, 2,4‐D concentration, and reaction temperature. Dechlorination results indicated that the 2,4‐D removal and phenoxyacetic acid (PA) generation rates were 44.1% and 20.1%, respectively, in the nPd/Fe system, and 100.0% and 92.1%, respectively, in the BC‐nPd/Fe system. The dechlorination of 2,4‐D was well described by the pseudo‐first‐order kinetic model (R2 > 0.97), and the observed rate constants kobs were 0.0042 min (nPd/Fe) and 0.0578 min (BC‐nPd/Fe), respectively. The reaction mechanism indicated that the dechlorination hydrogenation was the main process to remove 2,4‐D from water in the BC‐nPd/Fe system. In addition, BC inhibited the formation of a passivation layer on the particle surface during the reaction, thus maintaining the high reactivity of BC‐nPd/Fe. The easy preparation technique, high 2,4‐D dechlorination capacity, and mild reaction conditions suggest that BC‐nPd/Fe may be a promising alternative composite to remove 2,4‐D from water.

Abstract:The Pd/FeFe(3)O(4) nanocomposites showed higher dechlorination efficiency of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) rather than bare Pd/Fe nanoparticles in the batch dechlorination experiments. nFe(3)O(4) provided a convenient way to recycle the nanocomposites with an external magnetic field and significantly enhanced 2,4-DCP dechlorination. 2.0 g L(-1) nFe(3)O(4) was the optimal dosage in the presence of 3 g L(-1) Pd/Fe nanoparticles in our system, removing 76.4% 2,4-DCP within 5h in the aqueous environment. This was much higher than bare Pd/Fe nanoparticles (35.8%), 1.0 g L(-1) nFe(3)O(4) (58.0%) and 2.5 g L(-1) nFe(3)O(4) (66.3%) employed under the same conditions. However, excessive nFe(3)O(4) (3.0 g L(-1)) partially overlapped on Pd/Fe nanoparticles to obstruct their contact with 2,4-DCP, and then 2,4-DCP removal efficiency was dropped to 7.4%. Efficiencies of dechlorination and phenol formations were increased significantly when the amount of Pd increased, whereas the highest 2,4-DCP removal efficiency was observed 98.2% at 0.20 wt% Pd loading. Moreover, SO(4)(2-) would also inhibit the dechlorination while Cu(2+), Ni(2+) and Fe(2+) enhanced the dechlorination of 2,4-DCP by Pd/FeFe(3)O(4) nanocomposites. The nanocomposites showed stable catalytic activity, fairly good mechanic stability, and promising to recycle during the process.
Reductive Dechlorination of 4-Chlorophenol by Highly Dispersed Pd/Fe Nanoparticles

Abstract:Highly dispersed Pd/Fe nanoparticles were prepared by using ultrasound-assisted liquid phase reductive method,and used for reductive dechlorination of 4-chlorophenol(4-CP).The affecting factors and degradation kinetics were investigated.The experimental results showed that:obvious modification was achieved on the particle size,most of them less than 100nm,and on specific surface areas,increased 43.42%.The efficiency of 4-CP reductive dechlorination was up to 97% on the Pd/Fe nanoparticles with Pd mass fraction 0.2% and its dosage 2.5 g·L-1 at the conditions:time 300 min,initial 4-CP concentration 20 mg·L-1,pH value 3.0,and reaction temperature 30℃.The degradation reaction of 4-CP followed pseudo-first-order kinetics and the apparent pseudo-first-order kinetics constant was 1.76×10-2 min-1.

Abstract:Nanoscale Pd/Fe bimetallic particles were synthesized and used to hydrodechlorinate 2,4-dichlorophenol. 2,4-dichlorophenol was transformed to phenol with a small amount of 2-chlorophenol and 4-chlorophenol produced. The reaction pathway and reaction rate constants for each step have been determined. The effects of various Pd bulk loadings in the bi-metals, temperatures and pH conditions on the hydrodechlorination of 2,4-dichlorophenol were examined. The results showed that higher Pd bulk loadings, higher temperatures and weak acid conditions are beneficial to the catalytic dechlorination of 2,4-dichlorophenol.
