Abstract:On the basis of chemical bonding viewpoint, an analytical model of nanocrystal growth is proposed to predict the favored shape of zinc oxide single nanocrystal in the condition of different crystallographic surface structures, when identifying the surface chemical bonding characteristics. Owing to the distinct atom arrangements of different surface structures that determine the number of bonding sites and their chemical bonding strength, the surface bonding energy of crystal faces as a representative of surface bonding environment varies with the surface structure. Our calculated results indicate that the surface bonding energy is a critical factor that influences the shape of zinc oxide nanocrystals. The variation in the surface bonding energy of {100} face can induce the disappearance of {100} face, while the surface bonding energy of {011} face can control the exposure degree of (001) face. Furthermore, the current work advances our understanding of surface chemical bonding characteristics during crystal growth.
