Abstract:Grain boundaries play a major role for electron transport in graphene sheets grown by chemical vapor deposition. Here we investigate the electronic structure and transport properties of idealized graphene grain boundaries (GBs) in bi-crystals using first principles density functional theory (DFT) and non-equilibrium Greens functions (NEGF). We generated 150 different grain boundaries using an automated workflow where their geometry is relaxed with DFT. We find that the GBs generally show a quasi-1D bandstructure along the GB. We group the GBs in four classes based on their conductive properties: transparent, opaque, insulating, and spin-polarizing and show how this is related to angular mismatch, quantum mechanical interference, and out-of-plane buckling. Especially, we find that spin-polarization in the GB correlates with out-of-plane buckling. We further investigate the characteristics of these classes in simulated scanning tunnelling spectroscopy and diffusive transport along the GB which demonstrate how current can be guided along the GB.

Abstract:Understanding the influence of grain boundaries (GBs) on the electrical and thermal transport properties of graphene films is essentially important for electronic, optoelectronic and thermoelectric applications. Here we report a segregation–adsorption chemical vapour deposition method to grow well-stitched high-quality monolayer graphene films with a tunable uniform grain size from ∼200 nm to ∼1 μm, by using a Pt substrate with medium carbon solubility, which enables the determination of the scaling laws of thermal and electrical conductivities as a function of grain size. We found that the thermal conductivity of graphene films dramatically decreases with decreasing grain size by a small thermal boundary conductance of ∼3.8 × 10 9 W m −2 K −1 , while the electrical conductivity slowly decreases with an extraordinarily small GB transport gap of ∼0.01 eV and resistivity of ∼0.3 kΩ μm. Moreover, the changes in both the thermal and electrical conductivities with grain size change are greater than those of typical semiconducting thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:Atomically thin hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) exhibits a wide band gap, as well as excellent thermal and chemical stability, and thus has been used in ultraviolet light emission and as building blocks for two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures. Large-area h-BN films for technical applications can now be produced by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Unfortunately, grain boundaries (GBs) are ubiquitously introduced as a result of the coalescence of grains with different crystallographic orientations. It is well known that the properties of materials largely depend on GB structures. Here, we carried out a systematic study on the GB structures in CVD-grown polycrystalline h-BN monolayer films with a transmission electron microscope. Interestingly, most of these GBs are revealed to be formed via overlapping between neighboring grains, which are distinct from the covalently bonded GBs as commonly observed in other 2D materials. Further density functional theory calculations show that hydrogen plays an essential role in overlapping GB formation. This work provides an in-depth understanding of the microstructures and formation mechanisms of GBs in CVD-grown h-BN films, which should be informative in guiding the precisely controlled synthesis of large-area single-crystalline h-BN and other 2D materials.
Enhancing the Strength of Graphene by a Denser Grain Boundary.

Abstract:From a device application point of view, the extreme mechanical strength of graphene is highly desirable. However, the unavoidable polycrystalline nature of graphene films produced by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) leads to significant fluctuations in mechanical properties. Although the effects of atomic defects or grain boundaries (GBs) on mechanical strength have been widely studied and some modifications have been applied to enhance the stiffness of graphene, the problems of fragility as well as significantly reduced breaking strength arise. Here we report a systematic study on the effect of elastic modulus and breaking strength of CVD-derived graphene films with a controlled density and distribution of GBs. We find that graphene films become much stronger by hugely increasing the density of GBs without triple junctions (TJs) formed inside, in analogy to the two-dimensional (2D) plum pudding structures. The comprehensive performance with a 2D Young's modulus of 436 N/m (∼1.3 TPa) and 2D breaking strength of 43 N/m (∼128 GPa) can be achieved with the average grain size of 20 nm. Moreover, the existence of TJs will slightly reduce the strength in these GB structures. Due to defect types, the graphene films will show various tearing behaviors after indentation. All these mechanical studies of GBs provide a guideline to obtain the optimal performance of 2D materials through GB structure engineering.

Abstract:We investigate the influence of grain boundaries (GBs), line defects (LDs), and chirality on thermal transport in graphene using non-equilibrium Green's functions. At room temperature the ballistic thermal conductance is ~4.2 GW/m^2/K, and single GBs or LDs yield transmission from 50-80% of this value. LDs with carbon atom octagon defects have lower thermal transmission than GBs with pentagon and heptagon defects. We apply our findings to study the thermal conductivity of polycrystalline graphene for practical applications, and find that the type and size of GBs play an important role when grain sizes are smaller than a few hundred nanometers.

Abstract:Penta-graphene (PG), composed of carbon pentagons, has attracted considerable attention because of its unique atomic configuration and novel properties. Here, for the first time, we study the effect of grain boundaries (GBs) on the thermal transport properties of PG by using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. Compared with pristine PG, the thermal conductivity of grains in polycrystalline penta-graphenes (PPGs) decreases by about 20%. The boundary conductance of PPGs with different GBs is in a small range of 0.43 X 10(10) to 0.57 X 10(10) W/mK, which differs from the situation of polycrystalline graphene where the boundary conductance decreases dramatically with the increase of grain orientation angles. The critical size of the grains is found to be about 25 nm, below which the contribution from GBs to the thermal conductivity is comparable to that from the grains. This critical size is much smaller than that of polycrystalline graphene (100 nm). A detailed analysis of the phonon group velocity and vibrational density of states reveals that the geometric anisotropy and the phonon scattering induced by the GBs in PPG are the main reasons for the reduction of thermal conductivity. Effect of Grain Boundaries on Mechanical Transverse Wave Propagations in Graphene

Abstract:The effects of grain boundary (GB) on the mechanical transverse wave propagation in graphene are studied via molecular dynamics simulations and frequency spectrum analysis. We reveal that GB can attenuate transverse waves at terahertz frequencies in graphene, which might be significant for manipulating terahertz noises via nanostructured modifications in graphene-based nanodevices. Two fundamental mechanisms, scattering and resonance, are found in the attenuation of terahertz waves. The scattering impairs waves slightly with a wide range of effective frequencies, whereas the resonance, occurring in the vicinity of GB, significantly reduces the amplitude responses near resonance frequencies, which displays a special frequency-selective filter-like behavior. Moreover, the strong correlation between amplitude loss and buckling height further demonstrates the effects of GB on terahertz mechanical waves in graphene with different chiralities and misorientation angles.
Mapping electronic states of dual-parallel and symmetric zigzag grain boundaries of graphene on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite

Abstract:The grain boundaries (GBs) of a graphene surface were extensively studied because GBs with specific defect configurations result in the formation of new curved structures, which can be treated as new carbon allotropes. We studied the structures and electronic spectra of two periodic GBs in graphene on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surfaces using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S). Our results demonstrated that a GB consisting of dual parallel periodic dislocation cores of pentagonal-heptagonal (5-7) carbon rings gives rise to an enhanced localized state at 0.45 eV above the Dirac point in graphene surfaces, which is attributed to van Hove singularities (VHSs). Moreover, the energy positions of the localized states are varied between 0.40 and 0.47 eV depending on the site and eventually decayed to 0.36 eV. The variation of the energy positions is induced by two parallel GBs because of the higher electron density at the GB as a defect center and the lower electron away from the GB. Another periodic GB with a symmetric zigzag structural feature induced VHSs at -0.038 and 0.12 eV near the Fermi level. Moreover, intervalley scattering was observed on both these GBs. This means that carrier concentration and thus, the conductance around the periodic GBs can be significantly enhanced by localized density of states. This finding suggests that graphene with a properly embedded ordered GB is promising for improving the performance of graphene-based electronic devices.

Abstract:The coalescence of randomly distributed grains with different crystallographic orientations can result in pervasive grain boundaries (GBs) in 2D materials during their chemical synthesis. GBs not only are the inherent structural imperfection that causes influential impacts on structures and properties of 2D materials, but also have emerged as a platform for exploring unusual physics and functionalities stemming from dramatic changes in local atomic organization and even chemical makeup. Here, recent advances in studying the formation mechanism, atomic structures, and functional properties of GBs in a range of 2D materials are reviewed. By analyzing the growth mechanism and the competition between far-field strain and local chemical energies of dislocation cores, a complete understanding of the rich GB morphologies as well as their dependence on lattice misorientations and chemical compositions is presented. Mechanical, electronic, and chemical properties tied to GBs in different materials are then discussed, towards raising the concept of using GBs as a robust atomic-scale scaffold for realizing tailored functionalities, such as magnetism, luminescence, and catalysis. Finally, the future opportunities in retrieving GBs for making functional devices and the major challenges in the controlled formation of GB structures for designed applications are commented.
Effect of grain boundaries on charge transport in CVD-grown bilayer graphene

Abstract:Grain boundaries (GBs) in polycrystalline graphene could significantly modulate the physicochemical properties of graphene films, and have attracted intense interest. However, fundamental magnetotransport mechanisms of GBs in bilayer graphene grown by chemical vapour deposition (CVD) are scarcely reported. In this work, we synthesize bilayer graphene bicrystals on polycrystalline Cu foils and measure the electronic properties of such grains as well as of individual graphene grain boundaries. Interestingly, the pronounced metallic character of GB is observed, which is dramatically different from individual grains. Large linear magnetoresistance in graphene bicrystals is observed, which attributes to inhomogeneous charge transport, decorated by quantum interference effects at low temperatures. The measurement data show that individual boundaries between coalesced grains impede electrical transport, suppress the magnetoresistance and enhance intervalley scattering, leading to degradation of electrical performance of CVD graphene. Nevertheless, GBs embedded in a perfect graphene sheet can tune its electronic structure at the nanoscale, act as quasi-one-dimensional metallic wires and can be used as good candidates for strong magnetic field sensors. This work is beneficial to the fundamental understanding of the role of GBs in CVD-grown graphene and opens a potential avenue of application for polycrystalline bilayer graphene in functional devices.
Understanding the Effect of Grain Boundaries on the Mechanical Properties of Epoxy/Graphene Composites

Abstract:This work presents a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation study on the effect of grain boundaries (GBs) on the mechanical properties of epoxy/graphene composites. Ten types of GB models were constructed and comparisons were made for epoxy/graphene composites containing graphene with GBs. The results showed that the tensile and compressive behaviors, the glass transition temperature (Tg), and the configurations of epoxy/graphene composites were significantly affected by GBs. The tensile yield strength of epoxy/graphene composites could be either enhanced or weakened by GBs under a tensile load parallel to the graphene sheet. The underlying mechanisms may be attributed to multi-factor coupling, including the tensile strength of the reinforcements, the interfacial interaction energy, and the inflection degree of reinforcements. A balance exists among these effect factors, resulting in the diversity in the tensile yield strength of epoxy/graphene composites. The compressive yield strength for epoxy/graphene composites is higher than their counterpart in tension. The tensile/compressive yield strength for the same configuration presents diversity in different directions. Both an excellent interfacial interaction and the appropriate inflection degree of wrinkles for GB configurations restrict the translational and rotational movements of epoxy chains during volume expansion, which eventually improves the overall Tg. Understanding the reinforcing mechanism for graphene with GBs from the atomistic level provides new physical insights to material design for epoxy-based composites containing defective reinforcements.

Abstract:Graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (G/h-BN) heterostructure has attracted tremendous research efforts owing to its great potential for applications in nanoscale electronic devices. In such hybrid materials, tilt grain boundaries (GBs) between graphene and h-BN grains may have unique physical properties, which have not been well understood. Here we have conducted non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations to study the energetic and thermal properties of tilt GBs in G/h-BN heterostructures. Abstract:We present an investigation of the structural and electronic properties of an ordered grain boundary (GB) formed by separated pentagon-heptagon pairs in single-layer graphene/SiO2 using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), coupled with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It is observed that the pentagon-heptagon pairs, i. e., (1,0) dislocations, form a periodic quasi-one-dimensional chain. The (1,0) dislocations are separated by 8 transverse rows of carbon rings, with a period of similar to 2.1 nm. The protruded feature of each dislocation shown in the STM images reflects its out-of-plane buckling structure, which is supported by the DFT simulations. The STS spectra recorded along the small-angle GB show obvious differential-conductance peaks, the positions of which qualitatively accord with the van Hove singularities from the DFT calculations.

Abstract:Theoretical investigation on the transport properties of graphene nanoflakes (GNFs) with protrusions has been performed with density-functional calculations by considering the influence of the structural symmetry. It is found that GNFs with different widths of protrusions exhibit distinctly different transport properties, depending on whether they are mirror symmetric with respect to the midplane ( σ ) between the two edges. For the symmetric models, electrons primarily pass through the edges of the GNFs with a small transmission probability. On the contrary, the electrons prefer to transit along one side of the GNFs with a high probability in the asymmetric models. Therefore, the conductivity of asymmetric models is greater than that of symmetric models.

Abstract:Graphene grain boundaries (GBs) are associated with distinct mechanical and physical properties. To utilize these properties requires comprehensive investigation of the GB-controlled nanomechanics. Currently, there is short of fundamental understanding of the out-of-plane bending of graphene in the presence of GBs and the mechanical properties of related curved structures. Here with density functional theory-based tight-binding objective molecular simulations, we revealed anisotropic nonlinear bending of graphene with tilt GBs. The anisotropy and nonlinearity are caused by the dislocation cores which display out-of-plane protrusions. In addition, we investigated the GB-controlled elastic responses of curved graphene configurations, and established the coupling between the elastic modulus and local curvature near the GBs. Our findings serve as useful references for 3D graphene structure design utilizing GBs and can be generalized to other 2D materials.

Abstract:In this work, we study the effect of grain boundary (GB) on the thermal transport of phosphorene by using molecular dynamics simulations. By exploring a total of 19 GBs with different GB defect types and densities, we find that there is a relatively high Kapitza thermal boundary resistance at these boundaries. By analyzing the spatial distributions of the heat flux, we find that this high thermal boundary resistance can be attributed to the strong phonon-boundary scattering at the GBs. With the same type of defect, the thermal boundary resistance is found to increase with the increase of the defect density along the GBs, which can be attributed to the nonuniform distribution of stress and lattice distortion. Finally, we investigate the anisotropy in the thermal conductivity of phosphorene with GBs and reveal a strikingly high anisotropy ratio of thermal conductivities, which is found to arise from the different influences of boundaries on the thermal transport along the zigzag and armchair directions. Our results highlight the importance of GBs in the transport behavior of phosphorene and the need to include their effects in the thermal management of phosphorene-based electronic devices.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Despite the fact that structures and properties of tilt grain boundaries of graphite surface and graphene have been extensively studied, their effect on the structures and electronic spectra of graphene layers has not been fully addressed. Here we study effects of one-dimensional tilt grain boundaries on structures and electronic spectra of graphene multilayers by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. A tilt grain boundary of a top graphene sheet in graphene multilayers leads to a twist between consecutive layers and generates superstructures (Moire patterns) on one side of the boundary. Our results demonstrate that the twisting changes the electronic spectra of Bernal graphene bilayer and graphene trilayers dramatically. We also study quantum-confined twisted graphene bilayer generated between two adjacent tilt grain boundaries and find that the band structure of such a system is still valid even when the number of superstructures is reduced to two in one direction. It implies that the electronic structure of this system is driven by the physics of a single Moire spot.
