Abstract:Two fluorescent covalent organic frameworks (COFs) which bear two kinds of pores with different sizes and shapes have been synthesized. Abstract:2,4,6-Trinitrophenol (TNP) has high explosive risks and biological toxicity, and there has been considerable concern over the determination of TNP. In the present work, fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) stemmed from a green carbon source of pinecone by the facile hydrothermal approach. A novel environment- friendly fluorescent probe was developed to efficiently detect TNP by using the obtained CDs with remarkable fluorescence stability. The fluorescent CDs exhibited obvious excitation dependence with the highest peaks for excitation and emission occurring at 321 and 411 nm, respectively. The fluorescence intensity is significantly reduced by TNP owing to the inner filter effect with the CDs. The probe exhibited good linearity with TNP concentrations in the range of 0.025–20 μg mL −1 , and the limit of detection was as low as 8.5 ng mL −1 . Additionally, the probe proved successful in sensing TNP quantitatively in actual environmental samples with satisfied recoveries of 95.6–99.6%. The developed fluorescent probe offered an environment-friendly, efficient, rapid, and reliable platform for detecting trace TNP in the environmental field.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) with dual emission property can provide a convenient way to construct a ratiometric fluorescent sensor, which contributes to accurate determination of the target analytes. In this work, we present a simple and effective route to prepare dual emission CDs (DE-CDs) through the solvothermal reaction of o-phenylenediamine and ethanolamine. Under the excitation of UV light, DE-CDs not only show two distinguishable fluorescent emission peaks (430 nm, 550 nm), but also exhibit good water solubility and ratio fluorescence stability. The synthesized DE-CDs were employed as a ratiometric fluorescent sensor for the sensitive and selective detection of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP). Under optimal analysis conditions, a good linear relationship was obtained with the TNP concentration range from 0.2 to 50 µM and the limit of detection can reach 50 nM. The proposed method was applied successfully for the TNP detection in real water samples with recoveries of 86.8–116.3%. Furthermore, cell imaging experiments confirm the feasibility of visualizing intracellular TNP in live HeLa cells.

Abstract:A simple, economical, and green method for the preparation of water-soluble, high-fluorescent carbon quantum dots (C-dots) has been developed via hydrothermal process using aloe as a carbon source. The synthesized C-dots were characterized by atomic force microscope (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), fluorescence spectrophotometer, UV-vis absorption spectra as well as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results reveal that the as-prepared C-dots were spherical shape with an average diameter of 5 nm and emit bright yellow photoluminescence (PL) with a quantum yield of approximately 10.37%. The surface of the C-dots was rich in hydroxyl groups and presented various merits including high fluorescent quantum yield, excellent photostability, low toxicity and satisfactory solubility. Additionally, we found that one of the widely used synthetic food colorants, tartrazine, could result in a strong fluorescence quenching of the C-dots through a static quenching process. The decrease of fluorescence intensity made it possible to determine tartrazine in the linear range extending from 0.25 to 32.50 μM, This observation was further successfully applied for the determination of tartrazine in food samples collected from local markets, suggesting its great potential toward food routine analysis. Results from our study may shed light on the production of fluorescent and biocompatible nanocarbons due to our simple and environmental benign strategy to synthesize C-dots in which aloe was used as a carbon source.

Abstract:A simple method for the synthesis of water-soluble and well-dispersed fluorescent DNA-dots under mild conditions is reported. The solution of DNA-dots shows blue fluorescence and the luminescence lifetime equals 2.74 ns, with a quantum yield up to 7.5%. It is attractive that DNA-dots can be used as an effective fluorescent probe for the detection of iron ions with relatively good selectivity and sensitivity in an aqueous solution as well as in biological imaging applications.

Abstract:Fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) with advantages including excellent biocompatibility, low cost, and easy modification make them highly promising for applications in biological imaging. Here, we successfully synthesized dark green fluorescent CDs (g-CDs) using trinitropyrene as a carbon source and 2,4-diaminobenzenesulfonic acid as the reactant in one-pot synthesis. The results revealed that the g-CDs had an average uniform particle size of 4.93 nm, with a structure similar to graphite. The g-CDs imparted excellent water-solubility due to the presence of hydrophilic groups. The g-CDs exhibited an optimal fluorescence emission wavelength of 512 nm in acetone solvent, with a maximum quantum yield of 38.4%. When transferred into a normal saline solution, the g-CDs retained their green fluorescence, with the optimal fluorescence emission wavelength shifting to 505 nm. Notably, we observed a significant increase in fluorescence intensity and maximum quantum yield of up to 79.4% when the g-CDs were dissolved in a polar solvent. Furthermore, in vitro fluorescence imaging experiments demonstrated rapid cell entry, excellent fluorescence performance, high biocompatibility, and universality of the g-CDs. These findings underscore the high hydrophobicity and biocompatibility of our newly designed g-CDs, thus highlighting their immense potential as fluorescent probes in bioimaging and disease tracing applications.

Abstract:2,4,6-Trinitrophenol (TNP) is an important chemical and widely applied in industry. However, on account of its high toxicity, flammability and explosive nature, just trace amounts of TNP may cause potential threats to ecosystem and human security, so it is significant to establish a rapid and reliable method for the detection of TNP. Herein, a novel amphiphilic fluorescent probe TPE-CD was successfully designed and synthesized by the functionalization of hydrophilic β-cyclodextrin with a hydrophobic Aggregation Induced Emission (AIE) fluorophore. Moreover, spherical nanoparticles formed in H2O/CH3OH solution with the increase of water fraction (fw). Fluorescence titration of TNP indicated that TPE-CD exhibited excellent sensitivity to TNP with LOD = 0.31 μmol L−1 and Ksv = 3.06×104 L mol−1. The introduced β-cyclodextrin remarkably enhanced the ability of TPE-CD rather than its precursor TPE-COOH to capture TNP molecules through forming spherical nanoparticles, improving the fluorescence quenching efficiency. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations and experimental results confirmed that the response mechanism of TPE-CD to TNP involved Photoinduced Electron Transfer (PET) and Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) with PET being predominant. Furthermore, the probe showed excellent selectivity and anti-interference to aqueous TNP samples. Moreover, the test strips prepared by soaking in TPE-CD solution also exhibited good sensitivity to TNP, providing a convenient, rapid and reliable method for the detection of TNP.

Abstract:Water-soluble fluorescent carbon dots (C-dots) were prepared by a hydrothermal process using guanine as the sole carbon and nitrogen source. The as-prepared C-dots were detailly characterized and discussed. Results demonstrated that C-dots were nearly spherical with an amorphous structure and an average diameter of 2.8 nm. C-dots exhibited a strong blue photoluminescence (26.8% quantum yield) with excitation-dependent properties and good stabilities against pH (6–12), salts and metal ions. Furthermore, C-dots were successfully developed for TNP sensing based on fluorescence quenching in water solution with high selectivity and sensitivity, and the detection limit was as low as 58.5 nM. The unchanged fluorescence lifetimes of C-dots suggested that luminescent quenching effect was predominantly caused by inner-filter effect (IFE). In addition, real sample analysis showed that the as-prepared C-dots had potential applications for the detection of TNP in environment.

Abstract:The pursuit of a cost-effective and green synthetic approach to chemical sensors and their application in the sensing of toxic and harmful substances is a never-ending exercise for scientists and researchers. Preparation of fluorescent carbon dots (C-dots) from biomass using water as a solvent and a hydrothermal autoclave to provide the required synthesis temperature offers a cheap and environmentally friendly synthetic approach. Herein, we report a faster, less costly and ecofriendly hydrothermal synthetic approach of carbon dots from Citrullus vulgaris peels as a precursor. The as-prepared carbon dots exhibited hydroxyl, carbonyl and amide functional groups on the surface and an amorphous structure with a particle size distribution of 1.7–3.0 nm. Moreover, the carbon dots displayed intense blue emission fluorescence at 470 nm after excitation at 400 nm. The as-prepared carbon dots demonstrated effective application without further modification towards the selective and sensitive optical recognition of 2-nitrophenol used in the manufacture of explosives. A limit of detection of 2.28×10−7 M was achieved, and no fluorescence quenching was observed in the presence of other nitroaromatic and benzene derivatives indicating excellent selectivity towards 2-nitrophenol. Finally, further studies are required to investigate the potential for the as-prepared carbon dots to monitor nitroaromatic pollutants in real environmental systems.

Green Preparation of Fluorescent Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Quantum Dots for Sensitive Detection of Oxytetracycline in Environmental Samples

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) with strong fluorescence were prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method using natural biomass waste. Two efficient fluorescent probes were constructed for selective and sensitive detection of oxytetracycline (OTC). The synthesized N-CQDs were characterized by UV-visible absorption spectra, fluorescence spectra, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photon spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), which proved that the synthesized N-CQDs surface were functionalized and had stable fluorescence performance. The basis of N-CQDs detection of OTC was discussed, and various reaction conditions were studied. Under optimized conditions, orange peel carbon quantum dots (ON-CQDs) and watermelon peel carbon quantum dots (WN-CQDs) have a good linear relationship with OTC concentrations in the range of 2–100 μmol L−1 and 0.25–100 μmol L−1, respectively. ON-CQDs and WN-CQDs were both successfully applied in detecting the OTC in pretreated tap water, lake water, and soil, with the recovery rate at 91.724–103.206%, and the relative standard deviation was less than 5.35%. The results showed that the proposed N-CQDs proved to be green and simple, greatly reducing the detection time for OTC in the determination environment.

Abstract:Green fluorescent carbon dots (GCDs) were synthesized using o-phenylenediamine and ethylenediamine through a one-step hydrothermal method, thereby eliminating the need for further processing. The GCDs exhibited strong green fluorescence that was effectively quenched by Hg2+ and Fe3+, with minimal interference from other metal ions, anions, and small biological molecules. By optimizing the buffer solution, interference from Fe3+ was mitigated, which enhanced the robustness of the GCDs as a fluorescence probe for Hg2+ detection. The detection range for Hg2+ was 0-100 μM, with a detection limit of 300 nM. The quenching mechanism was thoroughly investigated, and the GCDs were successfully applied to detect Hg2+ in real water samples, yielding satisfactory results. This work highlights the potential of GCDs for practical environmental monitoring and water quality analysis.

Abstract:Water quality directly affects human health. It is very important to design a probe that can detect the pollutants in water. In this study, we synthesized one kind of carbon dots (CDs), which could emit strong blue fluorescence. The blue fluorescence could be quenched by 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) ascribed to the energy transfer (ET), could be quenched by lemon yellow (LY) ascribed to inner filter effect (IFE), and could be quenched by HClO ascribed to surface passivation (SP). TNP, LY, and HClO are common contaminants in water. By our experiment, it was proved that the synthesized CDs are a safe and effective fluorescent material and could be used to detect the pollutants (TNP, LY, and HClO) in the actual water sample.

Abstract:A facile, green, and high-output hydrothermal synthesis was proposed for the fabrication of highly fluorescent nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-doped CDs). The nitrogen content in N-doped CDs reached 19.2% and demonstrated strong blue fluorescence emission was obtained with fluorescence quantum yield (QY) of up to 32.9%, which exhibit high fluorescence quantum yield, high photostability, and excellent biocompatibility. The N-doped CDs possess high photostability, low toxicity, and excellent biocompatibility, based on which the N-doped CDs were successfully applied as a fluorescence probe for cell imaging. Moreover, it was then successfully demonstrated for sensitive and selective detection of Fe 3+ in serum.

Abstract:Abstract Developing carbon quantum dots with high throughput and quantum yields is critically important to promoting their application in environmental detection. Here, we developed a facile, green and high-output tactic to produce the N,S co-doped carbon quantum dots (N,S-CQDs) with excitation-dependent photoluminescence properties (quantum yield 29.4%). The methyl orange was used as a precursor for the first time and only water was used as a solvent without cumbersome separation processes. Noteworthily, the product yield of the obtained N,S-CQDs was evaluated to be 75.6%, which is much higher compared what previously studied. Moreover, cell culture result indicates that the toxicity of N,S-CQDs was dramatically reduced in the cellular levels in comparison to its precursor. Even at a high CQDs dose (500 µg/mL), the cell still sustained 90% activity, indicating that they cannot cause secondary pollution to the environment during practical applications. As-synthesized N, S-CQDs show high selectivity, low detection limit of 237 nM, and fast response time (~ 30 s) for detecting Hg2+. Systematical analyses demonstrate that the detection mechanism was elucidated to the synergistic action of static quenching, inner filter effect and photoinduced electron transfer. This study not only provides constructive guidance for the high-throughput and facile production of high-quality fluorescent CQDs, but also boosts the promising application of CQDs in environmental detection.

Abstract:Herein, a cucurbit[ n ]uril carbon quantum dots (Q[6]-CQDs) has been synthesized through a one-step hydrothermal method by using cucurbit[6]uril (Q[6]) and p -aminobenzenesulfonamide (SN), which characterized by UV–vis, FL, IR, XPS, XRD and TEM. The 1 H NMR spectra clearly showed that the rigid macrocyclic skeleton of Q[6] was retained during the synthesis of Q[6]-CQDs. In addition, the Q[6]@SN complex was confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The particle size of the prepared Q[6]-CQDs is about ∼ 3.3 nm, which emits strong blue fluorescence and has good water solubility. Subsequently, 2,4-dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP) in aqueous solution was identified and detected by the change of fluorescence intensity of Q[6]-CQDs with a detection limit of 0.15 μM (27.62 μg/L), lower than the relevant standard of USEPA (300 μg/L), and the calculated recovery rate was between 98.90 % and 106.20 %, which provides a new analytical approach for the monitoring of 2,4-DNP in water.

Abstract:We have prepared a new type of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with orange fluorescence and high fluorescence quantum yield through a rapid hydrothermal approach. The CQDs were effective for sensitive and selective sensing perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in complex water samples. To prepare the CQDs, 4-(diethylamino) salicylaldehyde and phosphoric acid were heated at 200 oC for 1 h. This produced orange emitting CQDs with a fluorescence quantum yield of up to 47.1%. The synergetic effect of strong acid and high temperature accelerated the hydrothermal reaction. In addition, PFOS and PFOA can quench the fluorescence of the CQDs through an electron transfer mechanism. Fluorescence quenching by PFOS and PFOA was linear over a range of 0.05-1.0 μM and 0.1-1.5 μM, respectively, with corresponding limits of detection of 5 nM and 10 nM. The high chemical stability, stable fluorescence, and selective PFOS/PFOA response of the CQDs make them effective for PFOS/PFOA sensing in complex water samples. Thus, this simple and selective fluorescence quenching assay has great application potential in environmental monitoring and assessment.

Hydrothermal synthesis of green fluorescent nitrogen doped carbon dots for the detection of nitrite and multicolor cellular imaging

Abstract:A fluorescent probe for the determination of nitrite (NO2-) was fabricated by using green fluorescent nitrogen doped carbon dots (NCDs). The NCDs were synthesized via a one-pot hydrothermal carbonization of citric acid in the presence of p-phenylenediamine as the nitrogen source. The N content of the NCDs was high to 17.09% and consisted of a variety of functional groups on the NCDs surface, including sp2-hybridized CN, porphyrin C-N-C and amino N in N-(C) 3 or H-N-(C) 2 et al. N atoms were also doped within the framework of the NCDs. The almost monodisperse NCDs (average particle diameter = 3.67 nm) exhibited green photoluminescence (PL) with excitation/emission maxima of 360/505 nm. The PL of the NCDs was dependent on both excitation wavelength and solution pH. The NCDs showed a strong PL quenching response to NO2- under acidic conditions (pH = 2.5). The PL intensity of the NCDs was inversely proportional to the concentration of NO2- between 0.02 and 40 μM (R2 = 0.992), with a detection limit of 21.2 nM. The practical use of the nanoprobe for NO2- determination in food samples was also demonstrated, successfully. NCD-nitroso compounds formed because of reaction between the abundant amide groups on the surface of NCDs with the NO2-, which caused an inner filter effect and static PL quenching. Importantly, the NCDs had low cellular toxicity and were successfully used as a multicolor cellular imaging agent for Hepg2 cells.
