Abstract:I examine the implications of corporate annual reports' risk sentiment for future earnings and stock returns. I measure the risk sentiment of annual reports by counting the frequency of words related to risk or uncertainty in the 10-K filings. I find that an increase in risk sentiment is associated with lower future earnings: Firms with a larger increase in risk sentiment have more negative earnings changes in the next year. Risk sentiment of annual reports can predict future returns in a cross-sectional setting: Firms with a large increase in risk sentiment experience significantly negative returns relative to those firms with little increase in risk sentiment in the twelve months after the annual report filing date. A hedge portfolio based on longing firms with a minor increase in risk sentiment of annual reports and shorting firms with a large increase in risk sentiment generates an Alpha of more than 10% annually measured using the four-factor model including the Fama-French three factors and the momentum factor.

Abstract:This research focuses on how market sentiment affects corporate governance in the Chinese market. The sample covers the years from 2014 to 2023. Market sentiment is estimated using a cross-sectional absolute deviation (CSAD) model, and earnings quality is used as an indicator of the consequences of corporate governance. Both mutual fund shareholding and the number of firm visits by mutual fund analysts are verified as effective corporate governance instruments that work well in a regular market but become ineffective when the market sentiment is high. The reason for this is that managers' expectations change, and they may believe that disclosing good news during high-sentiment market periods significantly increases the share prices and helps them meet their performance requirements. In a high-sentiment market, an incentive contract encourages managers to take on projects with inappropriate risk or even manipulate earnings. One potential solution is to adopt venture capital firms' high-water mark and clawback clauses to prevent managers from focusing on short-term goals rather than seeking long-term business sustainability.

Abstract:Economic theory suggests that pervasive factors should be priced in the cross-section of stock returns. However, our evidence shows that portfolios with higher risk exposure do not earn higher returns. More importantly, our evidence shows a striking two-regime pattern for all 10 macro-related factors: high-risk portfolios earn significantly higher returns than low-risk portfolios following low-sentiment periods, whereas the exact opposite occurs following high-sentiment periods. These findings are consistent with a setting in which market-wide sentiment is combined with short-sale impediments and sentiment-driven investors undermine the traditional risk-return tradeoff, especially during high-sentiment periods.

Abstract:Considering volitional disclosure of climate risk information, a question is whether investors react negatively to climate risk reports as highlighting new risks, or, alternatively, investors reward firm transparency initiatives. We evidence that enterprises that actively disclose climate risk information, such as emission reduction targets, are either rewarded or ignored by the market, consistent with our latter explanation. Results are consistent with disclosing of climate risk information signaling trustworthiness to investors. Further, closer analysis reveals our identified reactions are positively conditioned by the firm being state-owned; being a focus of greater investor attention, and being the recipient of negative investor sentiment.

Abstract:This study shows the influence of annual report opacity on stock returns. To measure annual report opacity, we modify the Gunning Fog index in the computational linguistics literature by including the graphical information contained in the report. We find that the opacity measure predicts both lower future returns and more negative skewness for Chinese stocks. The results are consistent with the notion that managers write opaque annual reports to stockpile bad news and such information uncertainty obscures negative information to be impounded into price rapidly.

Abstract:The new energy industry is crucial for solving the problem of pollution, and its development requires support from the stock market. This paper proposes a Chinese investor sentiment index based on the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) deep learning method and investigates the effect of investor sentiment on new energy stock returns as well as value at risks (VaR) behavior before and during COVID-19. It also compares these effects on traditional energy companies to identify differences between the new energy and traditional companies. The empirical results show that investor sentiment has significant effects on stock returns and VaR of both new and traditional energy companies but the effects are stronger in the new energy industry. The effects of investor sentiment have increased during COVID-19, and investors pay more attention on risks than returns during COVID-19. These results provide guidance for small and medium-sized investors in China to optimize their investment strategies and avoid heavy losses associated with extreme risks.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to enrich the scope of the influence of media reports on the stock risk, and it also provides a path to support the research on the relationship between media reports and idiosyncratic risks in the stock market. Design/methodology/approach The authors select financial restatement samples of listed companies in China from Jan 2015 to Dec 2017 to explore the impact of the financial restatement on the idiosyncratic risk of stocks. Further, the financial restatement that has more media attention may play a more significant role in promoting the idiosyncratic risk. Findings The authors found that the financial restatement of listed companies has a significant positive effect on the idiosyncratic risk of stocks. Specifically, the idiosyncratic risk changed five months before the restatement. After the restatement, the idiosyncratic risk increased by 83.47 in five days then decreased slowly, which lasted about one year. The restatement caused by sensitive issues and legal issues has a greater impact on the idiosyncratic risk. Both current restatement and delayed restatements will increase the idiosyncratic risk of stocks, but the impact of the latter is higher than the former. Research limitations/implications Possible deficiencies in the paper are that the number of restatements caused by major accounting errors is low. Therefore, no regular conclusions were drawn on the impact of the financial restatement caused by major accounting errors. Practical implications The conclusions provide a basis for targeted supervisory measures on the restatements of listed companies. The increase in financial restatements is closely related to the lack of governance mechanisms in the stock market. For investors, although the mystery of idiosyncratic volatility exists significantly in the market, the company's valuation level will affect the relationship between the idiosyncratic risk and expected return. Investors should pay attention to the intrinsic value of the company and should not blindly pursue stocks with a low idiosyncratic risk. Originality/value These conclusions may enrich the scope of the influence of media reports on the stock risk and also provide a path to support the research on the relationship between media reports and idiosyncratic risks in the capital market.

Abstract:This paper develops a text-based downside risk measure using corporate annual reports and assesses its ability to forecast future corporate policies. The forward-looking measure dynamically captures adverse firm conditions evolving from economic fundamentals. When the measure is below its sample average, leverage, investment, R&D, employment, and dividends consistently fall. When the measure rises, firms increase cash holdings. The proposed measure also delivers robust and persistent forecasts based on in-sample and out-of-sample LASSO regressions.

Abstract:This paper uses the partial least squares method to construct the investor sentiment index in Chinese stock market. The Shanghai Stock Exchange 180 Index and the Shenzhen Stock Exchange 100 Index are used as samples. From the perspectives of holistic sentiment and heterogeneous sentiment, this paper studies the impact of investor sentiment on stock price crash risk. The results show that investor sentiment can significantly affect stock price crash risk in Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share markets, especially in the Shenzhen A-share market no matter from which perspective. And investor pessimism has a greater impact on stock price crash risk in the Shenzhen A-share market from the perspective of heterogeneous sentiment. Compared with the available researches, this paper makes two contributions: (i) the comparative analysis is adopted to discuss the differences between Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share markets, abandoning the research approach that takes the two markets as a whole in existing literature, and (ii) this paper not only studies the impact of investor holistic sentiment on stock price crash risk from a macro perspective, but also adds a more micro heterogeneous sentiment and conducts a comparative analysis.

Abstract:By utilizing web-crawling and text analysis techniques on unstructured big data (text sets), this study examines to what extent investors disagree with the sentiment conveyed in annual reports. The main empirical findings suggest that the tone of annual reports significantly influences investor opinions. Specifically, a negative tone in annual reports is associated with high levels of divergence among investors' opinions, whereas a positive tone correlates with lower divergence. In the robustness tests, the results remain consistent after controlling for various factors. After we control for Management Discussion and Analysis (MD&A), both positive and negative tones in annual reports continue to be significant predictors of divergences in investor opinions. Additionally, after controlling for future earnings quality, future cash flows, and future earnings surprises, investors still present high/low divergence of opinion in response to a negative/positive tone in annual reports. Moreover, the robustness of our analysis is assessed by employing alternative sentiment analysis word lists.

Abstract:Corporate finance theory indicates that risk management increases firm value by reducing expected costs of financial distress, agency costs,expected taxes,etc.The paper provides evidences on the hypothesis with the empirical research in China.By a regression model analysis,the data suggest that firms with less coverage ratio,larger leverage ratio,faster growth rate,and more management share ownership, will pay more on risk management.However,the data also show that the firms with higher distress cost do not pay attention on risk manage- ment,which is contradicting to the financial theory.The author believe that should be contribute to the protection by local government,and very few listing firm in China go bankrupt,even if they have large negative net assets.In the long run,the protection offered by the govern- ment will destroy the firm' s competitiveness and thus reduced the firm value.

Abstract:Risk is an eternal topic in financial market research. Information asymmetry problem hinders the efficiency level of the market for a long time. Hence, this paper reports the results of an empirical study designed to test the effect of companies' idiosyncratic risk and information transparency on stock return on Chinese A share market. Based on theoretical foundations and existing research, we put forwards three hypotheses and build four regression models to verify the hypotheses. We get the results which are consistent with our hypotheses. Then we do some robustness tests. Finally we get the following conclusion: positive correlation between idiosyncratic risk and stock return; positive correlation between information transparency and stock return; negative correlation between cross term and stock return.
Risk-Taking, Opportunistic Earnings Management and Corporate Opacity: Evidence from China

Abstract:This paper examines the effect of corporate risk-taking on the opportunistic earnings management and corporate opacity. Using a large sample of Chinese stocks spanning the period 2007-2015, we find that corporate risk-taking is positively related to both accrual based - and real transaction-based earnings management. We also find a statistically significant and positive association between corporate risk-taking and corporate opacity. We further make several additional tests which find: First, we find that the high leverage and capital expenditure are the main forms of corporate risk-taking in above relationships. Second, we find that corporate risk-taking is positively related to all forms of real transaction-based earnings management. Finally, we document that the positive effect of corporate risk-taking on opportunistic earnings management and corporate opacity is more pronounced for firms who have over-confident managers. Our all findings remain robust to alternative sensitivity checks.
On the prediction of stock price crash risk using textual sentiment of management statement

Abstract:Purpose Since stock return and volatility matters to investors, this study proposes to incorporate the textual sentiment of annual reports in stock price crash risk prediction. Design/methodology/approach Specific sentences gathered from management discussions and their subsequent analyses are tokenized and transformed into numeric vectors using textual mining techniques, and then the Naïve Bayes method is applied to score the sentiment, which is used as an input variable for crash risk prediction. The results are compared between a collection of predictive models, including linear regression (LR) and machine learning techniques. Findings The experimental results find that those predictive models that incorporate textual sentiment significantly outperform the baseline models with only accounting and market variables included. These conclusions hold when crash risk is proxied by either the negative skewness of the return distribution or down-to-up volatility (DUVOL). Research limitations/implications It should be noted that the authors' study focuses on examining the predictive power of textual sentiment in crash risk prediction, while other dimensions of textual features such as readability and thematic contents are not considered. More analysis is needed to explore the predictive power of textual features from various dimensions, with the most recent sample data included in future studies. Originality/value The authors' study provides implications for the information value of textual data in financial analysis and risk management. It suggests that the soft information contained within annual reports may prove informative in crash risk prediction, and the incorporation of textual sentiment provides an incremental improvement in overall predictive performance.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of the paper is to examine the impact of investor sentiment on managers' decisions to provide CSR disclosures. The core issue focuses on whether, why and how managers adjust their approach to CSR disclosure to cater to the investor sentiment. Design/methodology/approach On the basis of 13,488 observations of A-share listed companies, the authors examine the impacts of investor sentiment on CSR disclosure, which is measured separately by the propensity to issue a standalone CSR report and the quality of CSR reports. Furthermore, the authors examine the moderating role of institutional factors in China. Findings The authors find that during low-sentiment periods, managers are more likely to issue a standalone CSR report and the quality of CSR reports is higher, and vice versa. Additionally, the authors find that the negative correlations between CSR disclosure and investor sentiment are stronger in state-owned enterprises. Research limitations/implications First, the measurement of investor sentiment reflects only a part of characteristics of investor sentiment. Second, the authors pay less attention to the specific items of a CSR report. Originality/value The study contributes to the literature on CSR disclosure and investor sentiment by combining the two fields together. Furthermore, the study deepens the understanding of the institutional context in China and contributes to research on the predictors of CSR disclosure.

Abstract:This study realises that before and after disclosure of repurchase information of share repurchasing firms, there are significant differences in investor sentiment towards the repurchasing stock. With repurchase information, repurchasing firms attempt to reduce negative investor sentiment towards the firms, thereby supporting the sentiment change motivation hypothesis. In addition, this study demonstrates that relationship between investor sentiment and stock returns differs according to investor groups. Margin trading investors, in particular, have irrational investor sentiment on share repurchase events. Finally, firm characteristics that support share repurchase influence the relationship between investor sentiment and cumulative abnormal returns in the study period.

Abstract:The basic objective of this article is to evaluate the pricing implications of market-wide investor sentiment risk for cross-sectional return variations of Indian listed companies across industry groups. A multivariate time-series regression approach has been used to examine the impact of sentiment risk on stock return behaviour in the presence of other market-wide systematic risk factors. Our results suggest that the role of sentiment risk in the determination of a cross-section of stock returns is not uniform across the test asset portfolios formed on the basis of size, book-to-market equity, liquidity and momentum characteristics. For all portfolios, the impact of sentiment risk on the cross-section of stock returns behaviour has been disproportionately negative. The effect holds even after controlling for systematic market-wide risk factors. Although the impact of sentiment risk on industry-shorted portfolio returns persists in accordance with the theoretical argument, the cross-sectional variation with respect to different industries has been heavily dependent on the availability of stocks in that particular industry. The commonality of the sentiment effect across industry is not similar, as it is for the aggregate market. The results suggest that generalisation of the hard-to-value and difficult-to-arbitrage argument must be judged with caution, keeping the industry effects in mind. JEL Classification: GI,G12,G14

Abstract:Objective: This paper explores the impact of media sentiment on stock prices on the Shanghai Stock Exchange Science and Technology Innovation Board (hereinafter the STAR market) from a behavioral finance perspective. Methods: We collect Baidu News coverage of STAR-listed firms as the text, and measure text sentiment using a machine learning-based text analysis technique. We then empirically examine the impact of media sentiment on STAR market stock prices from two aspects: IPO pricing efficiency and IPO first-day stock performance. Results: (1) Media sentiment has no significant impact on IPO pricing efficiency, thus suggesting that institutional investors participating in such offerings are generally not affected by media sentiment. (2) Optimistic media sentiment has a positive impact on IPO first-day returns, which indicates that individual investors are more easily influenced by media sentiment and therefore likely to abandon their rational judgment. (3) Media sentiment had a greater impact on IPO first-day returns during the COVID-19 pandemic than those before it, which suggests that individual investors are more influenced by media sentiment during pandemics. Discussion: Our findings deepen the understanding of stock price formation on the STAR market, which provide a statistical basis for formulating policy directions and investment strategies.
