Abstract:In this paper, a novel photoanode based on Ag NPs decorated branched TiO2 nanorod arrays (BTNR/Ag) was developed, aiming to utilize the comprehensive advantages of fast electron transport and large surface area of,one-dimensional TiO2 hierarchical structure as well as the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Ag NPs for improving the photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The hierarchical BTNR with abundant branches exhibits a novel matrix for Ag NPs deposition by a facile photo-reduction method. It is interesting that the Ag NPs demonstrate a typical size gradient distribution on BTNR. The high density small Ag NPs (less than 10 nm) at the middle part of BTNR are benefit for photo-generated electrons separation and transfer in dye-sensitized BTNR/Ag, while the large Ag NPs at the upper part of BTNR can act as light scattering layer to enhance light harvesting. The incorporation of Ag NPs in the hybrid nanostructure can also improve the dye-loading. As a result, the DSSC based on BTNR/Ag with appropriate content of Ag NPs exhibits higher power conversion efficiency than the DSSC based on pristine BTNR. However, the deposition of excess Ag NPs in BTNR/Ag causes loss of internal surface area and strong charge recombination, leading to decrease of efficiency. The DSSC based on BTNR/Ag synthesized at a 2 mmol L-1 AgNO3 solution shows the highest conversion efficiency, improved by 513% compared with the pristine BTNR-based DSSC. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Enhancement of Low Energy Sunlight Harvesting in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells Using Plasmonic Gold Nanorods

Abstract:This communication describes the use of Ag2S-encapsulated Au nanorods (AuNR@Ag2S) to enhance longer wavelength sunlight utility in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). We observed that the longitudinal plasmon resonance of AuNRs induces a remarkable increase of 37.6% in photocurrent generation at 600-720 nm. Optical characterizations indicate that the increased optical density and decreased light transmission as a result of AuNRs incorporation engender the striking improvement. With AuNR@Ag2S, the final power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the DSSC with a thin anode (6 mu m) increases from 4.3% to 5.6%, which is comparable to that of a pure TiO2 anode based DSSC (5.8%) with a film thickness of 11 mm. Further, incorporation of AuNR@Ag2S into the thick anode leads to the PCE increasing to 7.1%.
Plasmonic enhancement of light-harvesting efficiency in tandem dye-sensitized solar cells using multiplexed gold core/silica shell nanorods

Abstract:Incorporation of plasmonic metal nanocrystals is a promising approach for broadening and enhancing the light harvesting of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). In this work, we report a facile and versatile route to tune the photoresponse of tandem DSSCs via incorporating Au nanorods with multiplexed length-to-diameter aspect ratios in the two sub-cells. Plasmonic Au nanorods with length-to-diameter aspect ratio of 2.5 (Au NRs-1) and 3.9 (Au NRs-2) are prepared, exhibiting their plasmon band at 500–700 nm and 500–900 nm, respectively. Au NRs-1 core/SiO2 shell (Au NRs@SiO2-1) and Au NRs-2 core/SiO2 shell (Au NRs@SiO2-2) are separately incorporated in TiO2 photoanodes and then coupled with commercial dye N719 and N749 for the top and bottom sub-cells of a tandem DSSC, achieving a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 10.73% for relative to 9.02% of reference (TiO2 only) devices. By virtue of morphological, spectral and electrochemical characterizations and analysis, we find that the integration of Au NRs within dye-sensitized TiO2 photoanode film enables to increase the sunlight harvesting from visible to near infrared region by plasmonic enhancement effect, reduce the charge recombination probability and facilitate charge transport via Au NRs, leading to enhancement of PCE.

Abstract:The introduction of plasmonic additives is a promissing approach to boost the efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) since it may improve the light harvesting of a solar cell. Herein, we design broadband and strong plasmonic absorption Au@Ag@SiO2 nanocuboides (GSS NCs) as nanophotonic inclusions to achieve plasmon-enhanced DSSCs. These multiple resonances absorption arising from GSS NCs can be readily adjusted by altering their structures to complementarily match the absorption spectrum of the dyes, especially in weak absorption zones. By subtly regulating the position of nanophotonic inclusions in the photoanodes, not only the plasmonic near-field enhancement but also far-field light-scattering could be adequately developed to promote the light harvest and thus the efficiency of DSSCs. The resulting solar cells yield an average efficiency of 10.34%, with a champion value of 10.58%. The electromagnetic simulations are consistent with the experimental observations, further corroborating the synergistic effect of plasmonics improvement in these DSSCs.
Plasmonic Enhancement of Au Nanoparticle–Embedded Single-Crystalline ZnO Nanowire Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:This paper describes the enhanced efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) incorporating Au nanoparticle–embedded single-crystalline ZnO nanowire (Au NPs@ZnO NW) arrays. We fabricated these Au NPs@ZnO NW arrays through sequential hydrothermal ZnO growth, with the Au NPs deposited in between the two ZnO growth processes. Interestingly, despite the presence of embedded Au NPs, the ZnO NWs exhibited continuously matched periodic atomic arrangements across the ZnO NW core and shells, indicating that they were single-crystalline. The surface plasmon resonance peaks of the Au NPs on the ZnO NW arrays and of the Au NPs@ZnO NW arrays appeared near 526 and 574nm, respectively; the red-shift of the latter signal confirmed the embedded geometry of the Au NPs in the ZnO NW arrays. Photovoltaic measurements of the Au NPs@ZnO NW DSSCs revealed enhancements in efficiency that depended on the lengths of the ZnO NWs in the arrays; these efficiencies were all greater than those of corresponding ZnO NW–only DSSCs by at least 20%. In accordance with the geometry of our devices and the improved dye absorption within them, it appears that the near-field localized surface plasmon of the Au NPs in the ZnO NWs was the principal factor governing the enhanced power conversion efficiency.
Improvement of the Performance of Dye Sensitized Solar Cell Using ZnO Nanorods Array Deposited with Ag Nanoparticles As Photoanode

Abstract:Well-aligned zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods (NRs) arrays deposited with Ag nanoparticles (NPs) are prepared by a liquid phase epitaxial growth process followed by a reduction of Ag on the surface of the ZnO NRs. Transmission electron microscopy images show that most Ag NPs are deposited on the upper part of the ZnO NRs, and the overall optical absorption in the range of visible light can be enhanced due to the surface plasmon resonance of the Ag NPs. ZnO NRs with and without Ag NPs are used to assemble dye sensitized solar cells. Devices fabricated from the Ag NPs/ZnO NRs composite arrays exhibit a higher open voltage, short circuit current and fill factor than that fabricated from the bare ZnO NRs array, thus, the overall efficiency of the as-fabricated cell is increased from less than 0.5 % to 0.8 %. The main reason for the enhancement of the device performance may be ascribed to that the electron transfer back from ZnO to the dye and electrolyte is blocked by the Schottky barrier at the Ag/ZnO interface, resulting in a great increase of the electron density at the ZnO conduction band.

Abstract:A series of TiO2 photoanodes with differing amounts of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) on TiO2 in core-shell form (Ag@TiO2) are prepared and used to make a series of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The influence of different amounts of Ag-NPs on the structure and performance of the DSSCs is investigated. Studies indicate that the short-circuit current density (J(sc)), open-circuit voltage (V-oc), charge lifetime and dark current of DSSCs containing Ag-NPs are significantly improved. The best performance is achieved in the DSSCs with 0.15 wt% Ag-NPs additions, with the maximum J(sc) of 10.19 mA cm(-2), highest V-oc of 698 mV and best photoelectric conversion efficiency of 5.33%, significantly superior to that of the DSSCs with pure TiO2 photoanodes. The increase of J(sc) is attributed to the enhanced dye light absorption in strength and spectral range due to the surface plasmon resonance of Ag-NPs in photoanode, while the increase of V-oc may be related to the more negative level of the quasi-Fermi energy of Ag-TiO2 composite system resulting from the added Ag. Abstract:In this article, the unique bristled silver nanowires@TiO2 core shell nanostructure (AgNW@TiO2) is introduced into the TiO2 photoanode and applied to assemble dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The effects of the "optics-electrics highways" composites on the photovoltaic and photocatalytic behaviors of DSSCs are investigated in detail. Experiment research and FDTD simulation indicate that both the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and plasmonic waveguide effect could enhance light harvesting efficiency. By electrical properties and electrochemical analysis, it is demonstrated that the AgNW@TiO2 significantly accelerates electron transport as well as reduces recombination, then the charge collection efficiency of DSSCs is improved. The composite-modified DSSC exhibits the best performance with the power conversion efficiency of 8.84% which is superior to that of the free-modified DSSC with the PCE of 6.16%. Abstract:In this article, a typical silver-loaded anatase TiO2 nanotube (Ag-TNTs) was developed and assembled in DSSCs. By blending the Ag-TNTs and TiO2 nanoparticles as the composite photoanode, this hybrid nanostructure exhibits a promising architecture for accelerating electron transport as well as enhancing dye adsorption. These nanotubes could provide direct charge transfer pathways and increase electrolyte penetration in comparison with the TiO2 nanoparticles alone network. Moreover, the presence of the Ag nanoparticles could enhance the light harvesting efficiency and promote the charge separation, which further improves the performance of the DSSCs. The DSSC with metal-modified hybrid nanostructures has achieved an efficiency of 8.19% which is about 56% higher than DSSCs based on TiO2 nanoparticles photoanode with 5.26%.
Plasmonic Nanoparticles Enhanced Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:We present an investigation on introducing core-shell Au@PVP nanoparticles (NPs) into dye-sensitized solar cells. As a novel core-shell NPs structure, Au@PVP present not only the chemical stability to iodide/triiodide electrolyte, but also the adhesiveness to dye molecules, which could help to localize most of dye molecules around plasmonic NPs, hence increasing the optical absorption consequently the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the device. We obtain a PCE enhancement of 30% from 3.3% to 4.3% with incorporation of Au@PVP NPs. Moreover, the device performance with different concentration of Au@PVP NPs from 0 to 12.5 wt% has been studied, and we draw the conclusion that the performance of DSCs could be well improved through enhancing the light absorption by local surface plasmon (LSP) effect from Au@PVP NPs with an optimized concentration.

Abstract:Quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSCs) are recognized as one of the most promising candidates in converting solar energy into electric energy. The ideal solar cells should meet the demands including high light-harvesting capacity and charge transfer rate. However, the current power conversion efficiency of QDSCs remains low, due to insufficient light absorption of the photoanode and the sluggish charge extraction rate from quantum dots to TiO2. In the device, TiO2 performs the function of loading quantum dots and transmitting photogenerated electrons; thus, the TiO2 films should be carefully designed and constructed. In this work, the as-prepared Au nanorods coated with TiO2 are incorporated into TiO2 film electrode. Benefiting from the plasmonic effect of Au nanorods, the resulted photoanodes exhibit an enhanced light-scattering effect, consequently improving the light-harvesting efficiency of the photoanode. Meanwhile, photoelectric characterization reveals that the formed interface of Au nanorods/TiO2 can not only inhibit the charge recombination process but also accelerate charge transfer within TiO2. The resultant plasmonic devices based on Zn-Cu-In-Se quantum dots and Cu2S/brass CEs exhibit a power conversion efficiency of 8.58%, much higher than that of the pristine TiO2 photoanode based one (7.27%). This work puts up a versatile strategy for fabricating high efficiency QDSCs.
The Preparation and Improved Properties of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells by Surface Plasmon Resonace of Ag Nanoparticles

Abstract:A series of TiO2 photoanodes doped with different amounts of Ag nanoparticles(NPS) and prepared by the hydrothermal method were used to make a series of dye-sensitised solar cells(DSSCs).The influence of different amounts of Ag NPS on the structure and performance of DSSCs were investigated.Studies indicated that the incorporation of the Ag NPS significantly enhanced the light absorption of dye loaded on surface of TiO2 film and the short-circuit current density(Jsc).When the content of Ag NPS was 0.20%,the DSSC achieved the best performance with the largest short-circuit current of 10.66 mA/cm2,the highest open-circuit voltage of 697 mV and the photoelectric conversion efficiency of 5.59%,significantly superior to the DSSC with no Ag incorporation.The improved performances were attributed to the enhanced light absorption of dye resulted from the surface plasmon resonance of Ag NPS in photoanode.
Incorporation of plasmonic Au nanostars into photoanodes for high efficiency dye-sensitized solar cells

Abstract:We have significantly improved the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) by incorporating plasmonic Au nanostars into the TiO2 photoanode. Gold nanostars were synthesized and used as localized surface plasmons (LSPs) to enhance the light absorption of DSSCs. The Au nanostars exhibit near infrared (NIR) light absorption at similar to 785 nm. The N719 and N749 dye based DSSC devices were fabricated with and without the incorporation of Au nanostars. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of DSSCs using Au nanostars was increased by similar to 20% from 7.1% to 8.4% for N719 cells and by similar to 30% from 3.9% to 5.0% for N749 devices. The incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) was improved and the spectral response was broadened over the wavelength range of 380-1000 nm. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) showed that by incorporating Au nanostars, the charge recombination resistance R-ct value decreased under both open-circuit and illumination conditions, which indicated high electron density generated in the device photoanode.

Abstract:FeS2-sensitized ZnO/ZnS nanorod arrays were fabricated and used as the photoanodes for quantum-dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs). The cell performance of the ZnO/ZnS nanorod arrays after sensitization was better than that of ZnO-based nanorod arrays without sensitizing treatment. Pyrite FeS2 was found to be an effective photosensitizer for QDSSCs. Various QDSSCs were assembled using different counter electrodes, such as Pt, FeS2 nanorods and FeS2 nanoparticles, and comparisons of cell performance as well as catalytic activity were made among them.

Abstract:A series of TiO2 nanocomposite photoanodes with different amounts of Ag nanowire (AgNW) coated with SiO2 in a AgNW@SiO2 core–shell structure are prepared by a ball milling method and applied to assemble a series of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The influence of AgNW@SiO2 on the performance of the TiO2–AgNW photoanodes and DSSCs is investigated. Studies indicates that the range and strength of light absorption of the TiO2 photoanodes, the photon capture ability of the dye molecules, and the short-circuit current density (Jsc) are significantly increased while the dark current is decreased due to the incorporation of AgNW@SiO2. The optimal properties are obtained in a DSSC with a Jsc of 11.83 mA cm−2, and an overall photoelectric conversion efficiency (η) of 6.26%, significantly superior to those of the DSSC with a pure TiO2 photoanode. The enhancements of Jsc and η are attributed to the increase of light coupling and thus the light absorption of the dye due to the localized surface plasmon resonance and the possible enhanced light scattering of AgNW@SiO2 in the photoanode.

Abstract:In this paper, ZnO nanorods (NRs) were prepared by a two-step solution phase reaction. A composite photoanode architecture is fabricated by adding 0–0.20 at.% ZnO NRs into ZnO nanoparticles (NPs). The scanning electron microscopy image shows that the average diameter and length of the ZnO NRs are about 50 nm and 2–5 µm, respectively, and the ZnO NRs are uniformly embedded into the ZnO NPs photoanode. The UV–vis spectrum analysis reveals that the amount of dye adsorption of the composite photoanode decreases with increasing ZnO NRs content. Meanwhile, the influence of ZnO NRs contents on the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) performance is systematically investigated. The photocurrent density–voltage (J–V) characteristics reveal that the device performance of DSSCs can be significantly enhanced by the composite photoanode. Typically, the DSSC with 0.15 at.% ZnO NRs obtains the optimal energy conversion efficiency of 3.8%, which is 28.4% higher than that of the pristine ZnO DSSCs. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis shows that ZnO NRs can provide a direct pathway for accelerating electron transport, extending the electron lifetime, suppressing electron recombination and improving electron collection efficiency. These results indicate that the incorporation of ZnO NRs in the photoanode is an effective way to improve the performance of DSSCs.

Abstract:A high efficiency quantum dot sensitized solar cell (QDSC) based on Ag nanoparticles (NPs) decorated TiO2/ZnO nanorod arrays (NAs) photoelectrode has been constructed. The incorporation of Ag NPs to TiO2/ZnO NAs photoelectrode not only increases light harvesting efficiency and facilitates exciton dissociation but also decreases surface charge recombination and prolongs electron lifetime, which collectively contribute to improving the Jsc of the CdS/CdSe QDs cosensitized solar cells. The direct contact of Ag NPs with TiO2 NPs is undergoing Fermi level alignment; thus, the apparent Fermi level is supposed to trigger an upward shift of more negative potential, which results in an increase the Voc of the QDSCs. As a result, the power conversion efficiency of the QDSCs with Ag NPs decorated TiO2/ZnO NAs photoelectrode reached 5.92%, which is about 22% enhancement of the efficiency for the solar cells without Ag NPs (4.80%).

Abstract:In this paper, we present an investigation on the use of Au-Ag alloy popcorn-shaped nanoparticles (NPs) to realise the broadband optical absorption enhancement of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). Both simulation and experimental results indicate that compared with regular plasmonic NPs, such as nano-spheres, irregular popcorn-shaped alloy NPs exhibit absorption enhancement over a broad wavelength range due to the excitation of localized surface plasmons (LSPs) at different wavelengths. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of DSCs is enhanced by 16% from 5.26% to 6.09% by incorporating 2.38 wt% Au-Ag alloy popcorn NPs. Moreover, by adding a scattering layer on the exterior of the counter electrode, the popcorn NPs demonstrate an even stronger ability to increase the PCE by 32% from 5.94% to 7.85%, which results from the more efficient excitation of the LSP mode on the popcorn NPs.

Abstract:Plasmonic enhancement is an effective method to improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The size and amount of plasmon play key roles in plasmonic effect; however, the report on the relationship between morphology and processing of plasmon is rare. In this work, a series of Au nanoparticles (NPs) inlaid into TiO2 nanotube (NT) based photoanodes have been synthesized through tuning HAuCl4 solution concentration and irradiation time during the photoreduction process. Meanwhile, the optical and photoelectrical properties of these plasmonic DSSCs have also been verified. The results demonstrate that the optimized plasmonic DSSC (irradiation time: 5 min, solution concentration: 0.5 mM) showed a 19.0% improvement of PCE, compared to the reference DSSC without Au NPs. The improved PCE is mainly attributed to the enhanced photocurrent generated by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of small sized Au NPs as well as light scattering effect of large sized particles.
