Abstract:In this paper, we present an investigation on the use of Au-Ag alloy popcorn-shaped nanoparticles (NPs) to realise the broadband optical absorption enhancement of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). Both simulation and experimental results indicate that compared with regular plasmonic NPs, such as nano-spheres, irregular popcorn-shaped alloy NPs exhibit absorption enhancement over a broad wavelength range due to the excitation of localized surface plasmons (LSPs) at different wavelengths. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of DSCs is enhanced by 16% from 5.26% to 6.09% by incorporating 2.38 wt% Au-Ag alloy popcorn NPs. Moreover, by adding a scattering layer on the exterior of the counter electrode, the popcorn NPs demonstrate an even stronger ability to increase the PCE by 32% from 5.94% to 7.85%, which results from the more efficient excitation of the LSP mode on the popcorn NPs.
Improving the Efficiency of Polymer Solar Cells by Incorporating Gold Nanoparticles into All Polymer Layers

Abstract:We demonstrate efficiency improvement in polymer solar cells (PSCs) by ∼22% through incorporating Au nanoparticles (NPs) into all polymer layers. Au NPs are found to have distinct mechanisms in improving device performance when incorporated in different polymer layers. Au NPs in poly-(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) mainly contribute to better hole collection while Au NPs in active layer contributes to the enhanced optical absorption and more balanced charge-transport. Our theoretical result shows that the absorption enhancement at the active layer is attributed to plasmon resonances with strong near-field distributions penetrated into absorption polymers. These findings can be applied to design high-efficiency metallic NPs-incorporated PSCs.
Optical and electrical effects of gold nanoparticles in the active layer of polymer solar cells

Abstract:The effects of Au nanoparticles (NPs) incorporated into the active layer of polymer solar cells (PSCs) with a newly synthesized donor polymer are investigated in detail. Our work shows that localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) introduced by the metallic NPs can experimentally and theoretically enhance the light absorption in the active layer of PSCs because the strong LSPR near field mainly distributes laterally along the active layer. The understanding can be applied to other metallic NP incorporated organic solar cells. Meanwhile, our results show that electrical properties can counter-diminish the optical enhancement from LSPR and thus reduce the overall performance improvement. It is important that both optical and electrical properties need to be studied and optimized simultaneously for achieving improved power conversion efficiency. The study contributes to better understanding the uses of Au NPs for enhancing PSC performances.
Photo-assisted Deposition of Ag Nanoparticles on Branched TiO2 Nanorod Arrays for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells with Enhanced Efficiency

Abstract:In this paper, a novel photoanode based on Ag NPs decorated branched TiO2 nanorod arrays (BTNR/Ag) was developed, aiming to utilize the comprehensive advantages of fast electron transport and large surface area of,one-dimensional TiO2 hierarchical structure as well as the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Ag NPs for improving the photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The hierarchical BTNR with abundant branches exhibits a novel matrix for Ag NPs deposition by a facile photo-reduction method. It is interesting that the Ag NPs demonstrate a typical size gradient distribution on BTNR. The high density small Ag NPs (less than 10 nm) at the middle part of BTNR are benefit for photo-generated electrons separation and transfer in dye-sensitized BTNR/Ag, while the large Ag NPs at the upper part of BTNR can act as light scattering layer to enhance light harvesting. The incorporation of Ag NPs in the hybrid nanostructure can also improve the dye-loading. As a result, the DSSC based on BTNR/Ag with appropriate content of Ag NPs exhibits higher power conversion efficiency than the DSSC based on pristine BTNR. However, the deposition of excess Ag NPs in BTNR/Ag causes loss of internal surface area and strong charge recombination, leading to decrease of efficiency. The DSSC based on BTNR/Ag synthesized at a 2 mmol L-1 AgNO3 solution shows the highest conversion efficiency, improved by 513% compared with the pristine BTNR-based DSSC. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Enhanced charge extraction in organic solar cells through electron accumulation effects induced by metal nanoparticles

Abstract:Metal nanoparticles (NPs) have been used to enhance the performance of thin-filmdevices such as organic photovoltaics. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate electron extraction enhancement induced by charge accumulation effects of metal NPs. The metal NPs (Au and Ag NPs) are embedded in a titanium oxide (TiO2) layer, functioning as a highly efficient transport layer for improving the performances of inverted organic solar cells (OSCs), which leads to significantly increased photocurrent and power conversion efficiency reaching 8.20%. Importantly, our results show that the optical plasmonic effect of metal NPs (Au NPs and Ag NPs) in the electron transport layer is a minor factor in improving the OSCs' efficiency. Instead, the charge extraction enhancement under solar illumination can be explained by the transfer of UV-excited electrons from the TiO2 electron transport layer to metal NPs and the enhanced accumulation of the electrons in metal NPs-TiO2 composites. The electron accumulation reduces the work function of the electron transport composite layer after UV illumination. The redistribution of charges in the UV-irradiated metal NPs-TiO2 system can assist the charge extraction in OSCs. Multiphysics study is also conducted to explain the effects of the charge accumulation on device performances (i.e. improving short-circuit current without degrading the open-circuit voltage). Consequently, by incorporation of metal NPs, our experimental and theoretical results show that the NPs-TiO2 transport layer, in which case the effect of doping is different from the conventional doping effects in semiconductors, exhibits very good charge extraction and collection at the electrode for efficient organic optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:This article demonstrates a significant broadband enhancement of light absorption and improvement of photon-generated-charge transfer in CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite solar cells by incorporating plasmonic Au-Ag alloy popcorn-shaped nanoparticles (NPs). Compared to conventional nanoparticles and nanorods, these popcorn-shaped NPs have many fine structures. The device's maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) increases from 8.9% to 10.3%, namely 15.7% enhancement, with the aid of plasmonic popcorn-shaped NPs.

Abstract:We present an investigation on introducing core-shell Au@PVP nanoparticles (NPs) into dye-sensitized solar cells. As a novel core-shell NPs structure, Au@PVP present not only the chemical stability to iodide/triiodide electrolyte, but also the adhesiveness to dye molecules, which could help to localize most of dye molecules around plasmonic NPs, hence increasing the optical absorption consequently the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the device. We obtain a PCE enhancement of 30% from 3.3% to 4.3% with incorporation of Au@PVP NPs. Moreover, the device performance with different concentration of Au@PVP NPs from 0 to 12.5 wt% has been studied, and we draw the conclusion that the performance of DSCs could be well improved through enhancing the light absorption by local surface plasmon (LSP) effect from Au@PVP NPs with an optimized concentration.

Abstract:This paper describes the enhanced efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) incorporating Au nanoparticle–embedded single-crystalline ZnO nanowire (Au NPs@ZnO NW) arrays. We fabricated these Au NPs@ZnO NW arrays through sequential hydrothermal ZnO growth, with the Au NPs deposited in between the two ZnO growth processes. Interestingly, despite the presence of embedded Au NPs, the ZnO NWs exhibited continuously matched periodic atomic arrangements across the ZnO NW core and shells, indicating that they were single-crystalline. The surface plasmon resonance peaks of the Au NPs on the ZnO NW arrays and of the Au NPs@ZnO NW arrays appeared near 526 and 574nm, respectively; the red-shift of the latter signal confirmed the embedded geometry of the Au NPs in the ZnO NW arrays. Photovoltaic measurements of the Au NPs@ZnO NW DSSCs revealed enhancements in efficiency that depended on the lengths of the ZnO NWs in the arrays; these efficiencies were all greater than those of corresponding ZnO NW–only DSSCs by at least 20%. In accordance with the geometry of our devices and the improved dye absorption within them, it appears that the near-field localized surface plasmon of the Au NPs in the ZnO NWs was the principal factor governing the enhanced power conversion efficiency.
Effective and Tunable Light Trapping in Bulk Heterojunction Organic Solar Cells by Employing Au-Ag Alloy Nanoparticles

Abstract:Effective and tunable light trapping in organic solar cells (OSCs) has been demonstrated by employing Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles (NPs). A simple vacuum thermal annealing method has been employed to fabricate the Au-Ag alloy NPs with tunable molar ratio, and thereafter tunable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). The incorporation of the alloy NPs with an appropriate molar ratio into the OSCs structures supports amplification of the electric field near the particles surface through LSPR and results in an enhanced light absorption at the absorption wavelength region of the absorber owing to the near field coupling. The short-circuit photocurrent density of the alloy NPs-based OSCs is improved from 7.37 to 8.74 mA/cm2 compared to that of control OSCs, and the efficiency of 3.03% is obtained, which corresponds to an enhancement factor of 19%.
Ag nanoparticle-decorated SiO2@TiO2 hierarchical microspheres improve the efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells

Abstract:SiO2@TiO2-Ag (STA) microspheres decorated with Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were prepared and assembled into the photoanode. The photoanode composed of STA microspheres and TiO2 nanoparticles (P25) was prepared by doctor blade method. UV–vis measurement indicates that the introduction of a few STA microspheres observably enhances the light scattering and capturing ability of the photoanode. The photoelectric conversion efficiency of the DSSCs with 2wt% STA photoanode increased to 7.4% from 4.3% comparing with pure P25 TiO2 nanoparticles. The configuration DSSCs have the maximum short circuit current density (Jsc) of 16.0 mA cm−2 and open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.780 V, which are significantly higher than the pure TiO2 DSSCs. The significant improvement of the DSSCs performance can be due to the synergistic effect of the superior light scattering of STA and the localized surface plasma resonance (LSPR) effect of Ag NPs modified on the microspheres surface.

Abstract:The introduction of light scattering in the photoanodes of dye-sensitized solar cells is one of the most effective approaches to enhance their photovoltaic performance. In this work, we prepared submicron SiO2/TiO2 core/shell particles and embedded these particles in the nanostructured TiO2 photoanodes for light to scatter in the dye-sensitized solar cells. Due to the large difference in the refractive index between the SiO2 core and the TiO2 shell, the embedded submicron SiO2/TiO2 core/shell particles showed strong light scattering effect. Light absorbance of the dyed photoanode with the embedded SiO2/TiO2 particles for light scattering was found to be three times stronger than the one without light scattering particles over a wide wavelength range. The power conversion efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells was increased by about 50% after the introduction of light scattering SiO2/TiO2 core/shell particles in the photoanode. This work will provide a base for further enhancement in the photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cells by optimizing the submicron SiO2/TiO2 core/shell particles and the photoanodes.

Abstract:Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), light scattering, and lowering the series resistance of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) provide positive effect on the performance of photovoltaic device. However, the exciton recombination on the noble metal NPs accompanying above influences will deteriorate the performance of device. In this report, surface-modified Ag@oxide (TiO2 or SiO2 ) nanoprisms with 1-2 nm shell thickness are developed. The thin film composed of P3HT/Ag@oxides and P3HT:PCBM/Ag@oxides is investigated by absorption, photoluminescence (PL), and transient absorption spectroscopy. The results show a significant absorption, PL enhancement, and long-lived photogenerated polaron in the P3HT/Ag@TiO2 film, indicating the increase of photogenerated exciton population by LSPR of Ag nanoprisms. In the case of P3HT/Ag nanoprisms, partial PL quench and relatively short-lived photogenerated polaron are observed. That indicates that the oxides layer can effectively avoid the exciton recombination. When the Ag@oxide nanoprisms are introduced into the active layer of P3HT:PCBM photovoltaic devices, about 31% of power conversion efficiency enhancement is obtained relative to the reference cell. All these results indicate that Ag@oxides can enhance the performance of the cell, at the same time the ultrathin oxide shell prevents from the exciton recombination.

Abstract:By designing a fine-controlled nanocomposite with Au nanoparticles (similar to 2 nm in size) directly inlaid in TiO2 as working electrode, efficiency (eta) of 10.1% for a dye-sensitized solar cell with an open-circuit photovoltage of 863 mV and a short-circuit photocurrent of 15.71 mA cm(-2) have been achieved, giving an enhancement of 97 mV in photovoltage, 63% in photocurrent and 84% in efficiency compared to the cell with pure TiO2 photoanode (eta = 5.5%). As compared to pure TiO2, besides the local-field optical enhancement near the TiO2 surface caused by plasma resonance of Au nanoparticles which increases the dye absorption and hence the amount of photogenerated charge contributing to the photocurrent, it is evidenced that not only the quasi-Fermi level of Au-TiO2 photoanode can be modulated to more negative potentials by controlling the mass ratio of Au-TiO2, but their mosaic nanostructure reduces the charge recombination rate effectively, both leading to a marked enhancement of photovoltage. Our results prove that the unique nanostructural, physical and chemical properties of the direct mosaic nanoarchitecture of similar to 2 nm Au and TiO2 make them valuable materials as working electrodes for DSSCs to achieve high photovoltage and hence further improve the performance.

Abstract:To improve the electron collection, electron lifetime, and light-harvesting efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells simultaneously, Au nanoflowers were prepared and used to cover the entire TiO2 film. Deposition of Au nanoflowers around the TiO2 film formed a light-scattering "box" that covered the entire TiO2 film. Compared with a light-scattering layer that only covers the top surface of TiO2, the Au-nanoflowers box exhibited better light-harvesting efficiency due to omnidirectional light scattering, faster electron transport (attributed to the formation of electron channels between the metallic Au nanoflowers and the electron-collection electrode), and slower charge recombination. As a consequence, the short-circuit photocurrent and open-circuit photovoltage were both enhanced significantly, which improved the power conversion efficiency from 8.12 to 10.91% (34%) when an Au-nanoflowers box was wrapped around the photoanode.

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are the third generation of solar cells. Compared with traditional silicon-based solar cells, DSSCs have the advantages of low cost, good flexibility, and sustainability. Photoanode, as the carrier of the electron transport layer and dye adsorption, plays a crucial role in DSSC. However, the conversion efficiency of single-layer structured photoanode is still low, and the short-circuit current density is small. To solve these problems, we carried out doping modification and structural optimization of the ZnO single-layer photoanode. The main work is as follows: 1) considering that the band gap of ZnO is 3.3 eV, the addition of Ag2O (1.2~1.5 eV) nanoparticles on the basis of single-layer ZnO thin films can reduce the band gap distance, and further improve the optical response of the material in the range of visible light; 2) using the plasmon effect, a small number of gold nanoparticles are inserted into the lattice of the main material to provide more free charge; 3) the use of natural dye sensitizers improves the photoelectric conversion efficiency of DSSC and reduces the overall cost. The results of material characterization and photoelectrochemical performance test show that the current density is increased by 176% and the photoelectric conversion efficiency is increased by 195%.

Influence of Plasmonic Au@Cl/N Co‐doped Carbon Dots on the Performance of Dye‐Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:The synergic effect of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) and the effect of nitrogen and chlorine co‐doped carbon dots (Cl/N‐CQDs) on dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) performance was investigated. The Au NPs were shelled by a thin Cl/N‐CQDs layer to produce the Au@Cl/N‐CQDs structure. The synergistic influence of the LSPR (localized surface plasmon resonance) of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) and the effect of nitrogen and chlorine co‐doped carbon dots (Cl/N‐CQDs) on dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) performance are investigated. The gold NPs are coated with a thin layer of Cl/N‐CQDs to produce the Au@Cl/N‐CQDs structure. DSSCs are fabricated by using Au@Cl/N‐CQDs as co‐sensitizer. The focus of this work is to examine the effects of plasmonic Au NPs and carbon dots in addition to their synergistic effect by capping the Au NPs with Cl/N‐CQDs, and track their influence in DSSCs. N719 as ruthenium‐based dye, and natural dyes including betanin, crocin, carthamin, curcumin, chlorophyll, mallow, and lawsone are selected and applied in the DSSCs co‐sensitized by Au@Cl/N‐CQDs. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of DSSCs using all of the selected dyes is enhanced upon using the Au@Cl/N‐CQDs. It is due to the improvement in VOC (open circuit voltage) and JSC (short circuit photocurrent densities) relative to the use of dyes alone. Based on computational results, Au@Cl/N‐CQDs cause a red‐shift in comparison with pure dyes. The TD‐DFT (time‐dependent density functional theory) results show that the orbitals from the Au@Cl/N‐CQDs in dye/Au@Cl/N‐CQDs have contribution in most of the absorptions. In other words, electrons from HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital) of Au@Cl/N‐CQDs is transferred to the LUMO (lowest unoccupied molecular orbital) of dye, in most cases.

Abstract:Over the past few decades, the field of p-type dye-sensitized solar cell (p-DSSC) devices has undergone tremendous advances, in which Cu-based delafossite nanocrystal is of prime interest. This paper presents an augment of about 87% improvement in photocurrent observed in a particular configuration of organic dye P1 sensitized CuCrO 2 delafossite nanocrystal electrode coupled with organic redox shuttle, 1-methy-1H- tetrazole-5-thiolate and its disulfide dimer when Au nanoparticles (NPs, with diameter of about 20 nm) is added into the photocathode, achieving a power convert efficiency of 0.31% (measured under standard AM 1.5 G test conditions). Detailed investigation shows that the local electrical-magnetic field effect, induced by Au NPs among the mesoporous CuCrO 2 film, can improve the charge injection efficiency at dye/semiconductor interface, which is responsible for the bulk of the gain in photocurrent.

Abstract:SnO 2 is an attractive photoanode material for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), but it has many drawbacks and needs to be modified. In this study, flower-like SnO 2 particles are firstly prepared by a simple one-step hydrothermal synthesis method respectively, and the effect of hydrothermal reaction time on the growth of the particles is explored. The morphological and structural characterisation reveals that the flower-like particles have a larger specific surface area can provide more adsorption sites for dye molecules and are more suitable for photoanode materials. Then the optimal flower-like SnO 2 particles are selected to prepare the photoanode, which is also modified with different concentrations of Ag nanoparticles to successfully introduce the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect, and the optimal modification concentration is explored. Conformal characterisation, dye adsorption and light absorption tests revealed that the modification of Ag nanoparticles not only optimises the photoanode conformal structure and improves the dye adsorption, but also works in conjunction with the LSPR effect to improve the light absorption and utilisation, thus increasing the cell efficiency. Many cell performances of DSSC are also greatly improved due to the above work, and the optimal cell performance of DSSC is achieved when the Ag nanoparticles doping concentration is 0.03 M. Compared with the pure flower-like SnO2-based photoanode DSSC, the short-circuit current density of the best Ag nanoparticle-modified DSSC is enhanced by 28.56% to 15.80 mA/cm 2 , and its efficiency is improved by 20.82%–5.92%.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles of various sizes have been prepared and deposited on top of the TiO2 film in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) in order to enhance the light harvesting efficiency. The light scattering effect gradually strengthens as the size of Au nanoparticles increases from 48 to 203 nm. It is impressive that 1 μg cm−2 deposition of 203 nm gold nanoparticles on top of the TiO2 film enhances the light scattering efficiency remarkably, increasing the short-circuit photocurrent from 14.37 mA cm−2 to 17.81 mA cm−2 by 24% and the power conversion efficiency from 7.44% to 10.03% by 35%.
