Abstract:Herein, we reported a simple one-pot green method for preparation of fluorescent copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) with a high quantum yield up to 8.6%, using glutathione as the stabilizing agent. The as-prepared Cu NCs had good water solubility, excellent stability and ultrafine size through the characterization of UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Experimental results showed that the fluorescence of Cu NCs was linearly quenched by the Fe3+ concentrations in the range of 1-100 mu M, with the detection limit of 0.3 mu M. The as-formed Cu NCs were explored for the assay of Fe3+ in real water samples. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Carbon nanodots are fabricated by hydrothermal carbonization from heparin sodium. The morphology, structure, emission properties are characterized by using TEM, FTIR, XPS and fluorescent spectra. The results suggest that the carbon nanodots have a relatively uniform size and strong fluorescence; meanwhile they retain the abundant functional groups from the carbon source. As-prepared carbon nanodots can be applied to the detection of Cu2+, and show its potential application value as ion sensor material.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Fluorescent carbon-based nanoparticles, called chronically as carbon dots (CDs), were synthesised from citric acid (CA) and 2-Aminothiophenol (2AT) via an N and S co-doped hydrothermal method. After a series of micro-structural characterisation, N and S elements could be sufficiently doped by means of the heteroatom in the CDs solution. The as-prepared CDs solution showed blue colour fluorescence with the highest QY of 78.6%, and study on the UV–visible and PL spectra further revealed that the outstanding fluorescence of as-prepared CDs mainly originates from the generated molecular fluorophores instead of the surface state. Owing to the strong fluorescence, the as-prepared CDs can be used as a sensing probe for the detection of Ag+ with high sensitivity and selectivity. However, the changes of fluorescence intensity exhibited the complex nature of the quenching mechanism due to the –SH and –NH2 groups on the fringes of carbonaceous cores or molecular fluorophores to aggregate into another fluorescent cores with the assistance of Ag+ ions, which promises a new approach for efficient detection of Ag+ for the application in industrial pollutants. Abstract:Water-soluble fluorescent carbon nanodots (CNDs) were fabricated directly from polyethylene glycol (PEG) by a simple one-pot thermal treatment. In the formation of such CNDs, PEG played two essential roles: the carbon source and surface passivating agent. CNDs were used directly without any additional separation or purification procedure and yet have a comparable quantum yield with self-surface passivation CNDs or passivation-absent ones. The products were shown to be soluble in water and common organic solvents, and emitted bright multicolor fluorescence with excitation and pH dependent emission properties. The extensive characterization results likewise gave an insight into the formation and the luminescence mechanism of the CNDs. Cytotoxicity tests and cellular uptake experiments of the CNDs further demonstrated their viability in biochemical applications.

Abstract:This study presents a facile one-pot solvothermal synthesis of high-performance green fluorescent carbon dots (G-CDs) using o-phenylenediamine and ethylenediamine as precursors. The G-CDs show excellent optical, temporal, and chemical stability. Notably, they exhibit the highest quantum yield of 24.2% in ethanol and a strong green emission peaking at 546¬Ýnm under 440‚Äì490¬Ýnm excitation. In addition, G-CDs have outstanding salt resistance and multi-solvent compatibility. Due to its bright photoluminescence, G-CDs can be used as a secure ink for anti-counterfeiting. More remarkably, Cd 2+ ions can efficiently quench the fluorescence of G-CDs with a detection limit of 0.152 ¬μmol/L, enabling accurate quantification of Cd 2+ in water systems. The simple synthesis of high-performance G-CDs expands their applicability in sensing and bioimaging.

Abstract:A facile and rapid strategy was developed for the synthesis of ultrabright luminescent carbon nanodots (CDs) with tunable wavelength from 464 to 556 nm by introducing glutaraldehyde into the precursor solution under microwave irradiation. The fluorescence properties, including excitation and emission wavelength, quantum yield, and size of the CDs, were adjusted by changing the amount of glutaraldehyde and poly(ethylenimine). Several methods such as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and dynamic light scattering, UV-vis, fluorescence, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were employed to study the morphology and the properties of CDs. The luminescence mechanism was also discussed. In addition, confocal microscopy imaging revealed that the as-prepared CDs could be used as effective fluorescent probes in the cell imaging without obvious cytotoxicity. Moreover, a novel sensor for the detection of Co(2+) was proposed on the basis of Co(2+)-induced fluorescence quenching. These superior properties demonstrated the potential application of the CDs in cellular imaging and ion sensing.
One-Step Synthesis of Label-Free Ratiometric Fluorescence Carbon Dots for the Detection of Silver Ions and Glutathione and Cellular Imaging Applications

Abstract:The construction of ratiometric fluorescence assay has displayed fantastic advantages in improving semi-quantitative visualization capability by presenting successive color changes. Herein, long-wavelength emission nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) were developed for intrinsic ratiometric detection of silver ions (Ag+) and glutathione (GSH), accompanied by visualization fluorescence variation of orange and green. The label-free N-CDs were favorably obtained through one-step hydrothermal synthesis and displayed single long-wavelength emission at 618 nm under the excitation wavelength of 478 nm. Interestingly, a ratio rising peak emerges at 532 nm and the emission at 618 nm decreases with the introduction of Ag+, which exhibits ratiometric fluorescence emission characteristics ( I618nm/ I532nm) in the range of 0-140 μM with significant fluorescence varying from orange to green. Furthermore, the fluorescence of CDs@Ag(I) can be effectively ratiometric recovered by virtue of a specific reaction of GSH with Ag+, which is accompanied by the fluorescence of the solution returning from green to orange. In addition, the N-CDs hold excellent biocompatibility which can be implemented as the visualization biosensing platform for intracellular determination of Ag+ and GSH, demonstrating that proposed N-CDs have tremendous potential in biological systems.

Abstract:We report a new strategy for the gram-scale synthesis of highly blue fluorescent nitrogen and sulfur embedded organic dots through one-pot hydrothermal condensation of citric acid (CA) with cysteamine (Cys) at 200 degrees C. Under such circumstance, the dehydration between CA and Cys produces a molecular fluorophore, which self-assembles to amorphous dots through hydrophobic interaction and pi-pi stacking. In aqueous solution, the dots exhibit a very high fluorescent quantum yield that is above those of most photoluminescent carbon dots to date, since the fluorophore is not carbonized. The intense fluorescence emission is achieved by establishing an efficient push pull fluorophore system, as revealed by first-principles simulations. In the solid phase, the fluorescence of the dots is severely attenuated. More importantly, unlike excitation-independent emission displayed in solution, the fluorescence of the organic dots in the aggregated solid state is dependent on excitation wavelength, which is quite a rare and unique phenomenon. Finally, this new kind of organic dots has shown diverse applications in sensing and imaging.

Abstract:The authors report on the microwave-assisted one-step synthesis of nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) having a fluorescence quantum yield of 80% and a fluorescence lifetime of 15.0 ns. Citric acid and ethylenediamine were used as carbon source and as a nitrogen source, respectively. The N-CDs show excellent photostability over a wide range of pH values (4–11), even at high ion strength (2 M KCl) and after 4 h of continuous UV light irradiation. This makes these N-QDs promising candidates for fluorescent probes. Cellular toxicity test showed the N-CDs not to be cytotoxic to human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells and human embryonic kidney cells even at 400 μg∙mL−1 levels after 48 h incubation. The fluorescence intensity of N-CDs at 445 nm is quenched by Fe(III), Hg(II), and chlorite ions, respectively. The N-CDs are shown to be viable fluorescent probes for the ions Fe(III), Hg(II), and chlorite. Abstract:Herein, a novel nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) nanosensor for detecting Ag+ and glutathione (GSH) has been designed. Interestingly, Ag+ could significantly improve the fluorescence (FL) intensity of the N-CDs we prepared, which is different from most other metal ions with FL quenching effects on N-CDs. The sensing mechanism can be attributed to the oxidation characteristics of Ag+ and the formation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). In the reaction, the N-CDs acted as the reducing agent and stabilizer. Under the optimal conditions, the N-CDs could detect Ag+ with a nice linear relationship of R2 = 0.992 and the limit of detection was 0.091 μM. Furthermore, the FL of N-CDs solutions could return to nearly original intensity after introducing glutathione (GSH), which allowed the N-CDs to be applied for GSH detection sensitively and selectively. In addition, the N-CDs were also successfully applied to cellular multicolor imaging of Hela cells. The results reported here pave the way for N-CDs-based fluorescent "off-on-off" sensor in environment, bioassay and bioimaging.

Abstract:N-doped carbon dots/hydroxyapatite:Eu,Gd (N-CDs/HA:Eu,Gd) composite was synthesized via a facile one-step hydrothermal route. The obtained composite exhibited porous structure which played key roles in inhibiting the aggregation of N-CDs and enhancing the light absorption. Interestingly, the photoluminescence performance of N-CDs and HA:Eu,Gd was maintained after the one-step in-situ synthesis. Thus, N-CDs/HA:Eu,Gd exhibited dual-emissive and solid state photoluminescence under single wavelength excitation. The unique optical features could endow N-CDs/HA:Eu,Gd potential applications in ion detection and other fields.

Abstract:Carbon nanodots (CDs) of uniform size were prepared simply by the hydrothermal decomposition of folic acid (FA) precursor at various reaction temperatures. The CDs formed via dehydration of FA at 260 degrees C contributed the strongest photoluminescence (PL) signal and the highest quantum yield at about 68%, without assistance of any passivation agent. The effects of preparation conditions on PL behavior of CDs have been investigated in detail, and the quantum yield of the CDs was found to be associated strongly with sample crystallinity. Moreover, because the obtained CDs also exhibited high luminescence stability, abundant surface functional groups and good biocompatibility, there are many promising applications in printing ink, ion detection, pH sensors and cell imaging.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs), owing to their characteristic luminescent properties, have become a new favorite in the field of luminescence. They have been widely used in light emitting diode, ion detection, cell-imaging, ect. Herein a facile synthesis method of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) has been developedviaa one-step hydrothermal of glucose and m-phenylenediamine. The chemical composition, surface functional groups, and crystal structure of so prepared N-CQDs were systematically characterized. The characterizations indicate that nitrogen has been chemically doped in the CQDs and the N-CQDs crystallize in a graphene structure. Photoluminescence (PL) measurements show that the N-CQDs emit strong blue emission under the irradiation of ultraviolet. The emission is excitation-dependent, is resistant to photo bleaching and high ionic strength, and slightly decreases with the increase of temperature. The quantum yield of them is about 17.5%. The PL intensity of N-CQDs quenches linearly with the increase of the concentrations of Fe3+(0.5-1.0 mM) and CrO42-(0.3-0.6 mM), which are a kind of excellent fluorescent probe for the detection of Fe3+ and CrO42-. The quenching mechanism of Fe3+ and CrO42-is verified to be a static quenching mechanism based on inner filter effect. The N-CQDs are also found to be a good cell-imaging reagent of Hela cells.

Abstract:A new class of carbon dots (E‐CCDs) is obtained with one‐pot solvothermal method. E‐CCDs exhibit dual fluorescence emission at 460 and 600 nm, which is related to different emission centers. The addition of cyanic acid enhances the room‐temperature phosphorescence behavior with a lifetime of 1.17 s. These unique carbon dots can be potentially used for fingerprint detection and multi‐information encryption. As one of the most promising fluorescent nanomaterials, carbon dots (CDs) are extensively studied. Nevertheless, one‐pot synthesis methods for CDs with both dual emission aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) and room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) could lead to significant breakthrough in extensive application fields. Herein, a new class of CDs (E‐CCDs) with reversible luminescence (blue dissolved fluorescence and red AIE) and RTP behavior is obtained with an eco‐friendly, low‐cost one‐pot solvothermal method. E‐CCDs exhibit dual fluorescence emission at 460 (Em‐1) and 600 nm (Em‐2), which is related to different emission centers. The addition of cyanic acid enhances the RTP behavior with a lifetime of 1.17 s, which lasts for ≈9 s to the naked eye. Based on the unique fluorescence and phosphorescence characteristics of CDs, E‐CCDs can be potentially used for fingerprint detection and information encryption.

Abstract:Multi-emission carbon dots (M-CDs) have broad applications. However, reports of the synthesis of M-CDs and their emission mechanism are limited. In this study, M-CDs with three emissions are synthesized by a one-pot solvothermal method, and the luminescence mechanism is investigated in detail. The prepared M-CDs show significant concentration-dependent properties. For high-concentration M-CDs (HC CDs), the surface-defect and carbon-core luminescence states are related to emission centers at 423 and 586 nm, respectively. The emission center at 493 nm are mainly due to the self-absorption of M-CDs. Conversely, low-concentration M-CDs (LC CDs) have 423 and 586 nm emissions. The blue CDs (B-CDs) and red CDs (R-CDs) are extracted from the prepared M-CD solution. The structural and optical properties indicate that the 493 nm peak is related to aggregation and self-absorption between B-CDs and R-CDs in HC CDs. Surprisingly, solid CDs (S-CDs) with solid-state room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) are simultaneously obtained during the preparation of the M-CDs. The mechanism investigation results show that S-CDs are composed of CDs and NaHCO3, and NaHCO3 acts as an oxygen barrier to prevent the quenching of the triplet and rigidly holds the luminescent guests to suppress vibrational dissipation. The M-CDs are successfully applied to detect Morin, while the S-CDs are demonstrated for optical anti-counterfeiting applications.

Abstract:A facile strategy is reported to synthesize nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) with fluorescence emission by a one-step hydrothermal treatment under different temperatures with dicyanodiamide and citric acid as precursor materials of nitrogen and carbon sources, respectively. The as-produced N-CQDs display green or blue fluorescence under the ultraviolet lamp was controlled by the reaction temperature. Consequently, the as-prepared sample reacted at 200 ° C (N-CQDs-200), within the range of 3 nm, exhibits blue fluorescence excited at 365 nm irradiation with the maximum quantum yield (QY) of ca. 30.6%. Moreover, the N-CQDs possess rich functional groups such as nitrous groups and multiple oxygenated groups, which result in a favorable solubility in most hydrophilic solvents. From the characterization and discussion of TEM, HRTEM, FT-IR, XPS, Raman and UV-Vis, it is illustrated that the fluorescence performance was largely related to the nanomorphology, nitrogen concentration, multi-surface emission sites and various forms of transitions derived from the nitrogen doping. With the excellent fluorescence performance and the favorable solubility in solvents, the products are potentially suitable for monitoring organics.

Abstract:A green one‐step hydrothermal method has been successfully used to prepare carbon dots (CDs) by selectively co‐doping nitrogen, phosphorus and sulphur elements. For the sensitive detection of iron ions, a fluorescence quencher sensor based on nitrogen‐ and sulphur‐doped carbon dots (red NS‐CDs) has been developed, because of the good optical properties and bio‐histocompatibility of green NPS‐CDs and blue NP‐CDs, They are observed to penetrate NCl−H292 cells, fluorescing green and localizing in the cytoplasm. Carbon dots (CDs) with tunable photoluminescence was successfully prepared via selective co‐doping of three elements, including nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur element by green one‐step hydrothermal method. Nitrogen‐sulfur‐doped CDs (red NS‐CDs), which emitted red fluorescence under UV excitation, were used to detect iron ions in the linear range 1–50 μM, yielding detectable limits as low as 94 nM. The nitrogen‐phosphorus‐doped CDs (blue NP‐CDs) exhibited blue fluorescence with quantum yields up to 34.5 %. When the concentration is 800 μg/mL, it showed excellent anticancer effect in vitro. The nitrogen‐sulfur‐phosphorus‐doped CDs (green NPS‐CDs) emitting green fluorescence showed a low cytotoxicity at a high concentration of 800 μg/mL and were used for intracelluar imaging of NCl−H292 cells. This study demonstrated the photoluminescent characteristics of carbon dots (CDs) and highlighted the ability to modify their peak fluorescence emission wavelengths through the flexible combination of specific reagents under comparable hydrothermal conditions. Additionally, it provided valuable insights into the efficient methodologies for synthesizing CDs suitable for various application scenarios.

Synthesis of Carbon Dots with Strong Luminescence in Both Dispersed and Aggregated States by Tailoring Sulfur Doping.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDots), a class of environmentally friendly carbon-based luminescent nanomaterial, have been applied in a wide variety of fields, including bioimaging and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Prior to these applications, however, CDots usually require modifications because some of its limitations (e.g., the aggregation-induced luminescence quenching) make it difficult to apply in solid state. In order to realize CDots-based multiple applications simultaneously, this paper examines how CDots with a strong greenish-yellow fluorescence in both dispersed and aggregated states are prepared by microwaveassisted heating salicylic acid and thiourea. Based on control testing and the analysis of density functional theory calculations, S element from thiourea is doped into CDots and proves to be critical in governing the photoluminescence (PL) emission color. Featured with excellent biocompatibility and photostability, the dispersed CDots with photoluminescence quantum yields (32%) are able to function as a biological imaging reagent in vitro and in vivo without any side effect. Furthermore, the aggregated CDots also exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yields (26%) and remarkable resistance to organic solvent. These advantages will ensure that S-doped CDots can be applied as a color conversion layer so that white LEDs with different Commission International de L'Eclariage coordinates and tunable color temperature can be fabricated.
