Controllable Synthesis for Carbon Self-Doping and Structural Defect Co-Modified G-C3n4: Enhanced Photocatalytic Oxidation Performance and the Mechanism Insight

Abstract:For the purpose of improving the photocatalytic performance of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) in the field of contaminant elimination, an in-situ malonamide-assisted strategy is provided to prepare carbon self-doping and structural defect co-modified g-C3N4 (CDCN) via preprocessing of the mixture of urea and malonamide followed by thermal copolymerization. Changing the initial malonamide dosage can precisely adjust the carbon doping level and structural defect concentration of CDCN. The characteristic results confirm that the doped C derived from malonamide was successfully implanted into the g-C3N4 framework by replacing sp2 hybrid N atoms (C−N=C) in the heptazine units, simultaneously forming some structural defects. Additionally, the preprocessing endows CDCN with good textural properties. So, the optimal CDCN20 shows remarkably enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity in eliminating acetaminophen (APAP) and methylparaben (MPB) in water than pristine g-C3N4. By combining experimental and theoretical calculating results, the synergistic effect of C self-doping and structural defect promoting the photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4 is revealed thoroughly. This work provides a controllable strategy for synthesizing effective C self-doped g-C3N4 and a new insight into electronic structure and band structure-regulated photocatalytic oxidation mechanisms.
Surface‐Group‐Oriented, Condensation Cyclization‐Driven, Nitrogen‐Doping Strategy for the Preparation of a Nitrogen‐Species‐Tunable, Carbon‐Material‐Supported Pd Catalyst

Abstract:A nitrogen-carbon framework with the thickness of several molecules was fabricated through a straightforward nitrogen-doping strategy, in which specially designed surface-oxygen-containing groups (SOGs) first introduced onto the porous carbon support were used to guide the generation of a surface-nitrogen-containing structure through condensation reactions between SOGs and the amidogen group of organic amines under hydrothermal conditions. The results indicate that different kinds of SOGs generate different types and abundances of N species. The CO-releasing groups are apt to form a high proportion of amino groups, whereas the CO2-releasing groups, especially carboxyl and lactones, are mainly transformed into pyrrolic-type nitrogen. In the framework with dominant pyrrolic-type nitrogen, an electron-rich Pd activated site composed of Pd, pyrrolic-type N and C is built, in which electron transfer occurs from N to C and Pd atoms. This activated site contributes to the formation of electron-rich activated hydrogen and desorption of p-chloroaniline, which work together to achieve the superior selectivity about 99.90 % of p-chloroaniline and the excellent reusable performance. This strategy not only provides low-cost, nitrogen-doped carbon materials, but also develops a new method for the fabrication of different kinds of nitrogen species structures.
Tailoring C─N Containing Compounds into Carbon Nanomaterials with Tunable Morphologies for Electrocatalytic Applications

Abstract:A convenient molecular tailoring strategy is presented to convert g‐C3N4 into different carbon materials with controllable morphologies namely (S, N)‐co‐doped carbon, single metal atoms supported on layered carbon, carbon nanotubes, and carbon nanoballs. Mechanistic studies successfully predict other precursors for tailored carbon nanomaterials beyond g‐C3N4 such as caffeine, melamine, and urea. Carbon materials with unique sp2‐hybridization are extensively researched for catalytic applications due to their excellent conductivity and tunable physicochemical properties. However, the development of economic approaches to tailoring carbon materials into desired morphologies remains a challenge. Herein, a convenient "bottom‐up" strategy by pyrolysis of graphitic carbon nitride (g‐C3N4) (or other carbon/nitrogen (C, N)‐enriched compounds) together with selected metal salts and molecules is reported for the construction of different carbon‐based catalysts with tunable morphologies, including carbon nano‐balls, carbon nanotubes, nitrogen/sulfur (S, N) doped‐carbon nanosheets, and single‐atom catalysts, supported by carbon layers. The catalysts are systematically investigated through various microscopic, spectroscopic, and diffraction methods and they demonstrate promising and broad applications in electrocatalysis such as in the oxygen reduction reaction and water splitting. Mechanistic monitoring of the synthesis process through online thermogravimetric‐gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry measurements indicates that the release of C─N‐related moieties, such as dicyan, plays a key role in the growth of carbon products. This enables to successfully predict other widely available precursor compounds beyond g‐C3N4 such as caffeine, melamine, and urea. This work develops a novel and economic strategy to generate morphologically diverse carbon‐based catalysts and provides new, essential insights into the growth mechanism of carbon nanomaterials syntheses.

Abstract:AbstractGraphitic carbon nitride (CN), as a nonmetallic photocatalyst, has gained considerable attention for its cost‐effectiveness and environmentally friendly nature in catalyzing solar‐driven CO2 conversion into valuable products. However, the photocatalytic efficiency of CO2 reduction with CN remains low, accompanied by challenges in achieving desirable product selectivity. To address these limitations, a two‐step hydrothermal‐calcination tandem synthesis strategy is presented, introducing carbon quantum dots (CQDs) into CN and forming ultra‐thin CQD/CN nanosheets. The integration of CQDs induces a distinct work function with CN, creating a robust interface electric field after the combination. This electric field facilitates the accumulation of photoelectrons in the CQDs region, providing an abundant source of reduced electrons for the photocatalytic process. Remarkably, the CQD/CN nanosheets exhibit an average CO yield of 120 µmol g−1, showcasing an outstanding CO selectivity of 92.8%. The discovery in the work not only presents an innovative pathway for the development of high‐performance photocatalysts grounded in non‐metallic CN materials employing CQDs but also opens new avenues for versatile application prospects in environmental protection and sustainable cleaning energy.
Controllable Tailoring Graphene Nanoribbons with Tunable Surface Functionalities: an Effective Strategy Toward High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Abstract:An effective, large-scale synthesis strategy for producing graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with a nearly 100% yield has been proposed using a stepwise, solution-based, lengthwise unzipping carbon nanotube (CNT) method. Detailed Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis suggest that GNRs with tunable density of oxygen-containing functional groups on the GNR surfaces can be synthesized by adjusting the oxidant concentration during the CNT unzipping. The electrochemical characterization reveals that the as-produced GNRs with 42.91 atomic percent (atom %) oxygen-containing functional groups deliver a capacity of 437 mAh g(-1) after 100 cycles at 0.33C, while the as-produced GNRs with higher oxygen-containing functional groups only present a capacity of 225 mAh g(-1). On the basis of the electrochemical assessment and XPS analysis, the funtionals groups (epoxy-, carbonyl-, and carboxyl groups) in GNRs could be the effective contributor for the high-performance Li-ion batteries with appropriate adjustment.

Abstract:Fine control of nitrogen-doping in carbon materials is an urgent issue with great challenges for the applications in energy storage devices. In this work, nitrogen-doped hollow carbon spheres (NHCS) with tunable nitrogen-doping properties are synthesized by using graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets as precursor and Zinc powder as the template. A series of characterization techniques were performed to evidence the successful transformation of NHCS from g-C3N4. The nitrogen-doping level from 12.76 at.% to 27.82 at.% and the relative doping fractions of pyridinic-N, pyrrolic-N and graphitic-N for the g–C3N4–derived carbon materials can be easily tuned by controlling the synthetic temperatures. Serving as Li-ions battery anodes, the resultant NHCS delivers an acceptable initial discharge capacity of 1012.4 mAh g−1 under a current density of 0.1 A g−1 and a promising cycling stability (1064.5 mAh g−1 after 400 cycles) as well as an excellent rate performance (360 mAh g−1 at 10 A g−1). This work provides a facile gateway to synthesize high nitrogen-doped carbon materials applying to energy storage devices, from nitrogen-rich g-C3N4 precursor.

Abstract:As a semiconductor material, g-C3N4 has attracted attention with proficient charge storage and transfer characteristics. However, there is a limitation in its applications because of the low specific surface area and the small number of active sites associated with the bulk structure, and there is a lack of in-depth understanding of its optical properties. In this paper, we have discussed four different morphologies of g-C3N4, including bulk (B–CN), hexagonal hollow tubular (T-CN), alveolate (A-CN), and hollow spherical (S–CN) that have been prepared using the supramolecular self-assembly strategy. To examine the changes in morphology that affect the physiochemical and optical properties of the g-C3N4. With the change in the ratio of the raw materials and reaction condition, the number of defects in g-C3N4 represented by uncondensed NH2/-NH groups changes, thus inhibiting the recombination of photogenerated carriers. Meanwhile, the changes in morphology affect the microstructural composition of g-C3N4, which changes the energy band positions and fluorescence properties of the material. This work provides some valuable information on the morphological regulation of g-C3N4 and how to modulate the morphology to change the properties of g-C3N4.

Abstract:In this work, g-C3N4 nanotubes (CNtb) with sheet-like graphdiyne (GDY) composite are successfully prepared through a simple self-assembly method. The composite is proved to significantly improve the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers and the conductivity of the material, which consequently leads to enhanced performance towards photocatalytic CO2 reduction. For the composite, the yields for CO and CH4 are increased by 18–20 times, compared with pure CNtb. This work provides a new idea for the preparation of efficient g-C3N4 photocatalysts in the future.

Rational design of 3D carbon nitrides assemblies with tunable nano-building blocks for efficient visible-light photocatalytic CO2 conversion

Abstract:g-C3N4 is an appealing non-metal photocatalyst for CO2 reduction, while it shows unsatisfactory performance due to poor CO2 adsorption ability and deficient collection of photo-excited charges, but its efficiency greatly relies on the effective bulk and surface separation of photoexcited charge carriers. To address the challenges, we elaborately design Ag nanoparticles decorated 3D ordered g-C3N4 assemblies based on a synergistic route of Ag-induced supramolecular tailoring and assembling followed by thermal polymerization. The 3D structural topology of the nano-units for g-C3N4 can be altered from 2D orderly stacked nanosheets to 1D twisty g-C3N4 nanotubes by varying the amount of Ag(I). Moreover, the band structures and nitrogen vacancies can also be well-regulated. As supported by experimental and DFT calculation results, ACNNT-2 demonstrates excellent CO2 adsorption capacity, superior light harvesting ability, efficient charge separation and more localized charge density distribution, which can effectively decrease the energy barrier for COOH* intermediate and boost the CO* desorption, resulting in a superior photocatalytic selectivity. Consequently, in sharp contrast to BCN, the ACNNT-2 manifests a markedly improved CO generation rate of 145.5 μmol g−1h−1 under visible-light irradiation, reflecting an 18-fold enhancement together with a CO selectivity of 89%. This strategy provides a profound insight into the multiscale modulation of g-C3N4 photocatalysts with enhanced efficiency.

Abstract:A morphology-controllable 0D/1D graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4, CN) homojunction (MUCN) was constructed by a facile in-situ thermal polymerization process using the melamine-cyanuric acid supramolecular (MCS) and urea as co-precursor. The as-prepare MUCN is stable with controllable and uniform morphology and exhibits significantly enhanced photocatalytic activities for RhB degradation and H2O2 production. The RhB degradation rate and the H2O2 production are ~37 times and 17 times higher than that of pure CN, respectively. The significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance is attributed to the synergetic effect of energy band controlling and structural coupling in MUCN, which can form the internal driving force to improve the separation efficiency of charge carriers. The results have provided a new effective way for promoting the practical photocatalytic application of CN.

Cu nanocrystals enhanced charge separation and transfer in superior thin g-C3N4 nanosheets

Abstract:A two-step thermal condensation approach was developed to fabricate Cu and graphic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) composites. Cu nanocrystals (NCs) with a size range of 2 – 5 nm were embedded in superior thin g-C3N4 nanosheets. Although little amount of Cu NCs was incorporated in g-C3N4 nanosheets, Cu/g-C3N4 composites revealed promoting influence towards photocatalytic H2 generation and photodegradation of pollutions. Namely, the sample 680-Cu0.05% (with Cu of 0.05 wt%) revealed the best photocatalytic performance. Electrochemical test indicates that Cu NCs improve the productivity of the samples. Narrowed band gap in Cu/g-C3N4 composite samples resulted in an expanded photo adsorption in visible light range. The composites also revealed enhanced optical current response and small interfacial charge transport resistances compared with pure g-C3N4 nanosheets (sample Pure-680). The photocatalytic H2 generation rate of the composite was ~ 2790 μmol g−1 h−1, which is 2.3 times of that of Pure-680. The degradation efficiency of rhodamine B using the composite sample reached 95.5 % with a photodegradation rate of 0.0774 min−1 and was described a zero-order kinetics model (C0-C=kt) with a process completing within 35 min. The test of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution stability indicated that it was almost no degradation when using the composite sample after 8 cycles. This work proposes an efficient method to improve the separation and transfer efficiencies of photogenerated carriers in g-C3N4 and could be applied in another two-dimensional composite photocatalysts.

Abstract:Atomically 2D thin-layered structures, such as graphene nanosheets, graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (g-C3N4), hexagonal boron nitride, and transition metal dichalcogenides are emerging as fascinating materials for a good array of domains owing to their rare physicochemical characteristics. In particular, graphitic carbon nitride has turned into a hot subject in the scientific community due to numerous qualities such as simple preparation, electrochemical properties, high adsorption capacity, good photochemical properties, thermal stability, and acid-alkali chemical resistance, etc. Basically, g-C3N4 is considered as a polymeric material consisting of N and C atoms forming a tri-s-triazine network connected by planar amino groups. In comparison with most C-based materials, g-C3N4 possesses electron-rich characteristics, basic moieties, and hydrogen-bonding groups owing to the presence of hydrogen and nitrogen atoms; therefore, it is taken into account as an interesting nominee to further complement carbon in applications of functional materials. Nevertheless, g-C3N4 has some intrinsic limitations and drawbacks mainly related to a relatively poor specific surface area, rapid charge recombination, a limited light absorption range, and a poor dispersibility in both aqueous and organic mediums. To overcome these shortcomings, numerous chemical modification approaches have been conducted with the aim of expanding the range of application of g-C3N4 and enhancing its properties. In the current review, the comprehensive survey is conducted on g-C3N4 chemical functionalization strategies including covalent and noncovalent approaches. Covalent approaches consist of establishing covalent linkage between the g-C3N4 structure and the chemical modifier such as oxidation/carboxylation, amidation, polymer grafting, etc., whereas the noncovalent approaches mainly consist of physical bonding and intermolecular interaction such as van der Waals interactions, electrostatic interactions, π-π interactions, and so on. Furthermore, the preparation, characterization, and diverse applications of functionalized g-C3N4 in various domains are described and recapped. We believe that this work will inspire scientists and readers to conduct research with the aim of exploring other functionalization strategies for this material in numerous applications.
Tailoring Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes into Graphene Quantum Sheets

Abstract:Transformation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into sub-10 nm pieces is highly required but remains a great challenge. Herein, we report a robust strategy capable of mechanically tailoring pristine multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) into graphene quantum sheets (M-GQSs) with an extremely high yield of up to 44.6 wt %. The method combines silica-assisted ball-milling and sonication-assisted solvent exfoliation and therefore enables reproducible high-yield production of M-GQSs directly from MWCNTs. Remarkable solvent diversity and extraordinary solvability (up to 7 mg/mL) are demonstrated facilitating the solution processing of the M-GQSs. The M-GQSs are essentially monolayers with intrinsic curvature, which could be determinative to their outstanding performances in both dispersions and thin films. Besides the excitation wavelength-, concentration-, and solvent-dependent photoluminescence in dispersions, the solid-state fluorescence and exceptional nonlinear saturation absorption (NSA) in thin films are demonstrated. Particularly, NSA with relative modulation depth up to 46% and saturation intensity down to 1.53 MW/cm2 are achieved in M-GQS/poly(methyl methacrylate) hybrid thin films with a loading content of merely 0.2 wt %. Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 , CN) exhibits inefficient charge separation, deficient CO 2 adsorption and activation sites, and sluggish surface reaction kinetics, which have been recognized as the main barriers to its application in CO 2 photocatalytic reduction. In this work, carbon quantum dot (CQD) decoration and oxygen atom doping were applied to CN by a facile one-step hydrothermal method. The incorporated CQDs not only facilitate charge transfer and separation, but also provide alternative CO 2 adsorption and activation sites. Further, the oxygen-atom-doped CN (OCN), in which oxygen doping is accompanied by the formation of nitrogen defects, proves to be a sustainable H + provider by facilitating the water dissociation and oxidation half-reactions. Because of the synergistic effect of the hybridized binary CQDs/OCN addressing the three challenging issues of the CN based materials, the performance of CO 2 photocatalytic conversion to CH 4 over CQDs/OCN- x ( x represents the volume ratio of laboratory-used H 2 O 2 (30 wt.%) in the mixed solution) is dramatically improved by 11 times at least. The hybrid photocatalyst design and mechanism proposed in this work could inspire more rational design and fabrication of effective photocatalysts for CO 2 photocatalytic conversion with a high CH 4 selectivity.

Abstract:Nitrogen-rich graphite carbon nitride has attracted considerable attention due to its low band gap and widespread potential application. Herein, a series of porous g-C3N4+x materials are developed by pyrolysis of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (C2H4N4) and mesoporous silica template (KIT-6). The pore diameters can be precisely tuned by controlling the proportion of C2H4N4 and KIT-6. A variety of characterizations were conducted to analyze the correlation between structure and photocatalytic performance towards the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). It was found that, the synthesized porous g-C3N4+x exhibited a narrower band gap of 1.43 eV, which significantly extended its visible-light responsive range. Moreover, the enhanced N content and adjustable porous diameter effectively increased the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Therefore, remarkably improved photocatalytic activity was achieved, which was 5.2 times higher than that of bulk g-C3N4+x, and presented super stability as well. Additionally, the possible photocatalytic mechanism was proposed and verified. These findings shed light on a new facile way to fabricate high-performance photocatalytic materials and provided new opportunities for environmental remediation.
In situ growth strategy synthesis of single-atom nickel/sulfur co-doped g-C3N4 for efficient photocatalytic tetracycline degradation and CO2 reduction

Abstract:Herein, a single-atom Ni/S co-doped g-C3N4 (Ni/S-CN-N) was prepared via thermal polymerization of urea/thiourea complexes of Ni followed by secondary calcination with NH4Cl. The photocatalytic activity of this material was evaluated by degradation of tetracycline (TC) and reduction of CO2. X-ray absorption fine structure measurements and theoretical calculations indicate that single-atom sites of Ni are anchored on g-C3N4 (CN) through Ni-O/N bonds and that they act as active centers to accumulate electrons. NH4Cl-assisted calcination effectively increased the specific surface area of the material. The apparent rate constant for TC degradation over optimized Ni/S-CN-N is 0.031 min−1, 6.0 times higher than pristine CN. Moreover, the Ni/S-CN-N exhibits a high CO2 reduction rate with H2O. The CO and CH4 yields were 58.6 and 18.9 μmol g−1, respectively within 5 h, higher than that of pristine CN (CO: 7.9 μmol g−1, CH4: 0 μmol g−1). This work provides a facile in situ growth strategy to construct CN modified with single-atom metal sites for photocatalytic applications.

Abstract:In this communication, we demonstrate nonmetal SiO(x) nanoparticles (NPs) can tailor few-layer graphenes (FLGs) into graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) and regular pieces with smooth edges. The tailoring of graphene is realized by the movements of SiO(x) NPs along the graphene lattice in the atmosphere of H(2), and the tailored trenches exhibit high selectivity of the crystallographic orientation compared to the reported metal NPs. The low tailoring rate and the long lifetime provide great potential for accurate control of the trench length or the length of the tailored GNRs. As a result, smooth GNRs with a length of several micrometers and a width narrower than 10 nm are obtained. A catalytic hydrogenation mechanism is proposed for the tailoring of graphene by SiO(x) NPs. These findings open up the possibility for atomically precise graphene device fabrication without metal contamination and indicate the potential catalytic activity of nonmetal NPs for the hydrogenation of carbon materials.

Abstract:As a promising visible-light-responsive catalyst, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has been widely used in environmental and energy applications owing to its unique semiconducting optoelectronic properties. However, the photocatalytic performance of bulk g-C3N4 synthesized using N-containing precursors via a conventional thermal polycondensation process is generally limited by low crystallinity caused by incomplete polymerization. In addition to forced polymerization under high-pressure conditions, removing the unpolymerized and inactive part of bulk g-C3N4 through controllable etching is another practical way to optimize its crystallinity. Therefore, we developed an economical and general method to fabricate g-C3N4 with high crystallinity and excellent photocatalytic properties, in which cheap sodium nitrite aqueous solution is utilized as a moderate etching agent. The compositions and physiochemical properties of the products were comprehensively investigated by X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, N-2 adsorption-desorption, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. In addition, ToF-SIMS (time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry), a new surface analysis technology, was also used to determine the surface and structural characteristics of all samples. The obtained g-C3N4 shows ideal high-crystallinity features and excellent charge transfer ability, leading to significantly improved Cr(VI) reduction activity under visible light. Moreover, there is only a low content of nitrite residue (63.3 mg g(-1)) in the final g-C3N4 product, indicating that the method employing NaNO2, which is widely used in the food industry, is safe and waste-free. Therefore, the new controllable NaNO2 etching method is cleaner and more efficient than commonly-used corrosion approaches based on strong acids or strong oxidants, and thus affords a new strategy in the regulation and structural design of various catalysts.
