Abstract:A morphology-controllable 0D/1D graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4, CN) homojunction (MUCN) was constructed by a facile in-situ thermal polymerization process using the melamine-cyanuric acid supramolecular (MCS) and urea as co-precursor. The as-prepare MUCN is stable with controllable and uniform morphology and exhibits significantly enhanced photocatalytic activities for RhB degradation and H2O2 production. The RhB degradation rate and the H2O2 production are ~37 times and 17 times higher than that of pure CN, respectively. The significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance is attributed to the synergetic effect of energy band controlling and structural coupling in MUCN, which can form the internal driving force to improve the separation efficiency of charge carriers. The results have provided a new effective way for promoting the practical photocatalytic application of CN.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to improve the photocatalytic performance of graphitic carbon nitride (g - C₃N₄, abbreviated as CN). Specifically, by constructing a morphology - controllable 0D/1D g - C₃N₄ homojunction (MUCN), the author aims to significantly enhance its photocatalytic activity, especially in terms of the performance of degrading rhodamine B (RhB) and generating hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). ### Main problems and solutions 1. **Low - activity sites and low - carrier separation rate**: - **Problem**: In the application process, the traditional g - C₃N₄ material has the problems of few active sites and a low carrier separation rate, which limit its photocatalytic performance. - **Solution**: By constructing a homojunction, the separation and transport of photogenerated electron - hole pairs can be effectively promoted, thereby improving the photocatalytic performance. 2. **Insufficient morphology control**: - **Problem**: Most of the homojunction studies based on g - C₃N₄ do not involve the control of micro/nano - structures and morphologies, resulting in a limited improvement in photocatalytic efficiency. - **Solution**: By adjusting the proportion of precursors (such as the mass ratio of MCS and urea), a morphology - controllable 0D/1D g - C₃N₄ homojunction can be achieved, further optimizing the photocatalytic performance. 3. **Carrier migration path optimization**: - **Problem**: In the traditional g - C₃N₄ material, the carrier migration path is long, which affects the photocatalytic efficiency. - **Solution**: By constructing a homojunction with a specific morphology, such as zero - dimensional (0D) particles and one - dimensional (1D) tubular structures, the carrier migration path can be shortened and the transport channels can be increased. ### Experimental methods and results - **Experimental method**: The author adopted a simple in - situ thermal polymerization method, using melamine - cyanuric acid supramolecule (MCS) and urea as co - precursors to prepare a morphology - controllable 0D/1D g - C₃N₄ homojunction (MUCN). - **Results**: The prepared MUCN exhibits a uniform and controllable morphology and shows significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity in RhB degradation and H₂O₂ generation. Specifically: - The RhB degradation rate is approximately 37 times that of pure CN. - The amount of H₂O₂ generated is approximately 17 times that of pure CN. ### Conclusion By constructing a morphology - controllable 0D/1D g - C₃N₄ homojunction, the author has successfully solved the problems of low - activity sites and low - carrier separation rate in the traditional g - C₃N₄ material in photocatalytic applications. This new - type homojunction not only has excellent photocatalytic performance but also provides a new and effective way for the practical application of g - C₃N₄.
