Abstract:Thin amorphous films of tungsten oxide form the basic for a passive electrichromic device, in which a film is colored blue by simultanous injection of ions and electrons. Tungsten oxide films are usually used as a electrochromic(EC) layer. In this paper, two kinds of amorphous tungsten oxide films are made by thermal evaporation. One shows high color efficiency, and is good for EC layer use. The other shows low color efficiency but high ion injected charge, and is good for counter–electrode(CE), A qusi–symmetry electrochromic device is made by using this two different amorphous tungsten oxide films.

Abstract:Facile fabrication of advanced tungsten oxide (WO3) or WO3 hydrate materials with superior electrochemical and electrochromic properties is of great value in energy-related applications. Self-doping (oxygen vacancy doping) and nanostructure regulation are considered efficient strategies to enhance the performance of bulk WO3 materials. Herein, novel WO3-x hydrate nanosheets were prepared by a one-pot template/surfactant-free solvothermal method employing Na2WO4·2H2O as precursors and ethanol as solvent. The morphology, structure, and composition of the prepared WO3-x hydrate nanosheets were demonstrated by TEM, AFM, XRD, Raman spectrum, and XPS. Furthermore, WO3-x hydrate nanosheets films with mesostructured architecture were formed on FTO glass substrates by the dip-coating process, which exhibited excellent electrochemical and electrochromic performance. As a proof-of-concept example, an analog smart window device (ASWD) was assembled by using the WO3-x hydrate nanosheet film on FTO glass as the working electrode, an FTO glass as the counter electrode, and LiClO4 in propylene carbonate as the electrolyte. The fabricated ASWD presented fascinating electrochromic performance with a wide optical modulation range (82.1%) at the wavelength of 670 nm, moderate switching time (9.6/10.4 s for bleaching/coloration), high coloration efficiency (111.8 cm2/C) and good cyclic stability (maintains 71.6% of the maximum dynamic modulation range after 1000 cycles). Ascribed to the easy preparation process and outstanding electrochromic properties, this kind of WO3-x hydrate nanosheet and its corresponding electrochromic devices are believed to have great potential applications in energy-saving engineering.

Abstract:TiO2 nanocrystals embedded amorphous WO3 electrochromic films have been successfully fabricated with a facile one-step solution process. The structure and electrochromic properties of composite films were studied by transmission electron microscope, scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and electrochemical methods. The results show that anatase TiO2 nanocrystals with a size of about 5-10 nm were homogeneously embedded in the amorphous WO3 matrix (TiO2@WO3). Compared with pure WO3 film, the electrochromic performances of TiO2@WO3 are evidently enhanced. The further electrochemical analysis indicates that the enhancement may be mainly ascribed to the reconstruction of amorphous WO3 matrix with the emerging interfaces between nanocrystals and amorphous matrix. And the extremely high value of the coloration/bleaching reversibility is associated with the suppressing effect of TiO2 nanocrystals upon the Li+ trapping in WO3 matrix. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:The tungsten trioxide monohydrate (WO3 center dot H2O) nanosheets were directly formed on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates without any guidance of seed layer by a novel and quite facile one-step citric acid-assisted hydrothermal method at low temperature (90 degrees C). The WO3 center dot H2O nanosheets possess porous morphologies and good adhesion to the substrates, which would markedly increase the surface area of WO3 center dot H2O and facilitate the ion diffusion during the electrochemical processes. The WO3 center dot H2O nanosheets display superior electrochemical properties of large optical modulation (79.0%), fast switching time (t(c) = 10.1, t(b) = 6.1 s), high areal capacitance (43.30 mF cm(-2)) and excellent cycling stability. Furthermore, bridging electrochromic behavior with energy storage was successfully achieved. Based on the proposed WO3 center dot H2O nanosheets, a smart energy storage electrode was demonstrated, which could monitor the level of stored energy by color changes. The results show great potential of the one-step synthesized WO3 center dot H2O nanosheets for integrated electrochromism and energy storage applications.

Abstract:High-performance electrochromic films based on tungsten oxide hydrate ([WO2(O-2)H2O]center dot 1.66H(2)O) colloidal nanocrystals with fast switching speed were fabricated by laser ablation in a mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide followed by electrophoretic methods. Through electrophoretic deposition, the nanoparticles in the colloids synthesized by laser ablation aggregated onto the FTO coated glass substrate forming a lager cell with a uniform size of around 2OO nm, which subsequently self -assembled into a porous tungsten oxide hydrate film. By optimizing the electrophoretic time (800 s) and voltage (-0.5 V), the mesh -like porous tungsten oxide hydrate film achieved a wide optical modulation of 32% at 632 nm, fast coloration and bleaching response speed of 7.8 s and 1.7 s respectively due to the synergetic effect of the unique atomic structure of [WO2(O-2)H2O]center dot 1.66H(2)O and porous structure with large surface area that facilitates the ion insertion/extraction. Enhanced electrochromic performance of 2D grid-structured WO 3 thin films

Abstract:Controlling the microstructure of Tungsten trioxide (WO3) film is believed to be an efficient strategy to enhance its electrochromic (EC) performance in recent years. Here, WO3 thin films with two-dimensional (2D) grid structure are fabricated through electrodeposition using polystyrene (PS) nanofibers as sacrificial templates. The surface of WO3 thin films has grooves formed by the removal of PS nanofibers and thus the films are divided into grid structure. Due to the larger specific surface area and lower diffusion impedance induced by the grid structure, these WO3 films demonstrate an obvious enhancement of EC performance compared with the plane WO3 thin films obtained using the same electrodeposition parameters in the absent of PS nanofibers templates. The transmittance modulation rate (ΔT) of the grid-structured WO3 thin films is over 50% larger than that of the plane WO3 films at the wavelength of 550 nm. Consequently, the grid-structured WO3 films have a higher coloration efficiency (71.8 cm2/C) compared with the plane WO3 films (58.8 cm2/C). Furthermore, the coloration/bleaching time of grid-structured WO3 films are 1.27/0.93 s, which is much shorter than the plane WO3 films (2.34/2.18 s). The grid-structured WO3 films in this work show potential applications in the construction of highly performance and rapidly responsive EC devices.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) quasi-vertical nanosheet (QVNS) architectures are of great importance in the application of electrochromic devices due to its 3D porous structures, large surface area and lamellar permeable space of nanosheets. In this study, we demonstrate successful preparing of WO3 center dot 2H(2)O nanosheets via a novel and facile solution route and repurposing the typical electrodeposition technique to obtain 3D QVNS electrodes. Abstract:Electrochromic smart devices with controllable optical property are the most promising alternative to traditional windows and curtains. State of the art preparation and commercialization of large-scale electrochromic films are mainly based on vapor phase deposition, but massive application is limited by high price (due to complex preparation process). Here, an all-solution technology is developed for large-area low-cost preparation of electrochromic films. A WO3/ITO dispersion was successfully developed; high electrical conductivity ITO nanoparticle networks along with ITO coating on glass can serve as extended 3-dimensional electrode, which can form microelectrical field and act as the pathways for electron diffusion to WO3 nanorods. In fact, experiment results show that the surface resistance of WO3/ITO nanocomposite film decreased to 32% of the pure WO3. In other words, the optimum WO3/ITO nanocomposite films in this study with "distributed conductive structure" and submicrometer-sized voids morphology have improved the electrochromic properties remarkably. Our optimized WO3/ITO films exhibit higher optical modulation than pristine WO3 (Delta T = 81.7% vs 62.5% at 630 nm) and a faster switching speed (t(b) = 6 s vs 22 s).

Abstract:A vertically aligned hierarchical WO3 nanosheet array on a transparent conducting substrate is produced via a template-free and capping-agent-free hydrothermal method. Due to its high porosity among the nanosheets and good contact with the conductive substrate, the WO3 nanosheet film exhibits advantageous electrochemical abilities. For example, fast switching speed (5.2 and 2.2 s for coloration and bleaching, respectively), significant optical modulation (62% at 633 nm and 67% at 2000 nm), high coloration efficiency of 55.6 cm(2) C-1 at 700 nm and excellent cycling stability (95.4% after 3000 cycles) are achieved for the WO3 nanosheet array film in electrochromic application. In addition, the nanosheet film also shows outstanding electrocatalytic ability for chemical reduction of H2O2.

Abstract:Electrochromic WO3 films with size controlled nanorods were successfully fabricated by a wet chemistry method. The structure and electrochromic properties of tungsten oxide nanorods and films were studied by High resolution transmission electron microscope, Scanning electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electrochemical methods. The average length and diameter of the monodispersed tungsten oxide nanorods increase from 38 x 3.2 nm to 89 x 4.5 nm with help from surfactants. The results show that the electrochromic response time of WO3 nanorod films are strongly dependent on the size of the nanorods. By simply changing the size of the nanorods, the response time of the nanorod films can be regulated nearly by about five times. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy study showed that such trend can be attributed to the size effect of WO3 nanorods upon the dynamics of H ions diffusion. At the same time, all the nanorod films showed good electrochemical stability as there were no significant performance declines after 1000 cycles. The electrochromic modulations of transmittance at 633 nm were around 22%-49%. The above stated results demonstrate that, by controlling the size of WO3 nanorods, the electrochromic properties can be easily adjusted, especially the response time, indicating potential values for different response time required at different occasions. Abstract:Electrochromic films with a stacked structure of two-dimensional crystalline tungsten trioxide (WO3) nanosheets were fabricated on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) coated glass by a layer-by-layer (LBL) technique. Unique electrochromic property with a slow coloration process but a fast bleaching process was observed during the insertion/extraction process of the protons into/from the stacked structure. The linear relationship between the anodic peak current density and the square root of the potential sweep rate, indicating the insertion/extraction process of the protons into/from the stacked structure is controlled by a diffusion mechanism. The nanosheet film also exhibits a coloration efficiency of 32cm2/C and an excellent long-term stability during the electrochromic process.

Abstract:Ultrathin nanosheets are considered as one kind of the most promising candidates for the fabrication of flexible electrochromic devices (ECDs) due to their permeable channels, high specific surface areas and good contact with the substrate. Herein, we first report the synthesis of large-area nanosheets of tungsten oxide dihydrate (WO 3 ·2H 2 O) with a thickness of only about 1.4 nm, showing much higher Li + diffusion coefficients than those of the bulk counterpart. The WO 3 ·2H 2 O ultrathin nanosheets are successfully assembled into the electrode of flexible electrochromic device, which exhibits wide optical modulation, fast color-switching speed, high coloration efficiency, good cyclic stability and excellent flexibility. Moreover, the electrochromic mechanism of WO 3 ·2H 2 O is further investigated by first-principle density functional theory (DFT) calculations, in which the relationship between structural features of ultrathin nanosheets and coloration/bleaching response speed is revealed.

Abstract:Benefitting from large-sized ion tunnels and stable crystalline structures, hexagonal WO3 (h-WO3) is a promising electrochromic (EC) material. However, long reaction times and highly controlled reaction conditions for preparation hinder the practical application. Here, a novel method with a simple process and moderate condition, named topotactic layer-to-tunnel crystallization (TLTC), to prepare h-WO3 films is reported. The hexagonal tunnel structure is transformed from a layered structure by annealing, assisted by the structure director. The ACTEM with atomic resolution reveals the position of the structure director in the crystal lattice, which is left in the hexagonal tunnel. The mechanism of TLTC has been studied by the characterization of samples at different formation stages, and the key is the structure director, which maintains the hexagonal tunnel by steric effect. The prepared h-WO3 film exhibits significant optical modulation (65.8 % at 633 nm and 72.8 % at 1200 nm) and outstanding cyclic stability (98.1 % of initial optical modulation remained over 600 cycles). The TLTC method is based on the structure transition to construct large tunnels in lattice, providing a new technical route to prepare h-WO3 and showing great potential for EC materials manufacturing.

Abstract:The 2D nature of MXenes and its ability to assemble into loosely networked structures allow W18O49 NWs/Ti3C2Tx composite based electrochromic electrode to achieves fast transport kinetics and smart structural configuration. High transmittance modulation (61%) and coloring efficiency (139.1 cm2 C−1) in the 15‐layer composite film structure make it attractive for electrochromic applications such smart windows, light shielding, and stealth technology. Electrochromic devices can facilitate the realization of a wide set of future applications, ranging from energy‐saving windows to smart wearables and stealth. Historically, tungsten oxides have been the most studied materials for electrochromism, albeit with bottlenecks like limited conductivity, high charge transport barrier, and low ion diffusivity. Here, inspired by the recent MXene materials, the study has engineered an electrochromic composite of MXene nanosheets (Ti3C2Tx) and W18O49 nanowires (NWs). A transparent conductive electrode is fabricated by co‐assembly of Ag and W18O49NWs, followed by depositing W18O49 NW/Ti3C2Tx layers for the fabrication of the electrochromic device. The incorporation of Ti3C2Tx nanosheets enhances the transport of electrons and ions within the electrochromic layer, leading to a significant improvement in the electrochromic performance. Noteworthily, the film structure comprising 15 layers of W18O49 NW/Ti3C2Tx composite reveals enhanced transmittance modulation (61%), rapid response time (4.5 s coloration, 6.5 s bleaching), and high coloration efficiency (139.1 cm2 C−1). Moreover, the electrode also presents a high diffusion coefficient of Li+ and good cycling stability (96.66% after 250 switching cycles). Finally, a large‐scale (15 × 20 cm2) flexible electrochromic device with a solid electrolyte is successfully fabricated and utilized as a smart window and a flexible stealth patch.

Morphology-Dependent Near-Infrared Electrochromic Properties of Tungsten Oxide

Abstract:Vertically aligned WO3 nano-architectures on the transparent conducting substrate are produced via a hydrothermal method. The results revealed that different WO3 nano-architectures, including “nanoblocks”, “nanosheet” and “nanobelt” structures, can be obtained by adjusting the composition of the precursor solution, that shows that solvent composition plays an important role in the adjustment of the prepared material morphology. The nanostructured array films with thicknesses of about 600 nm show remarkable enhancement of the electrochromic properties in the infrared region. The obtained WO3 films have good electrochromic properties in the near-infrared range. In particular, significant optical modulation of the WO3 nanosheets (72% at 1200 nm), fast switching speed (6.5 s for colored and 8.7 s for bleached), and excellent cycling stability (maintained 90.2% of the initial optical modulation after 1000 cycles). The improved electrochromic performance is mainly due to the vertically arranged structure, which makes it easier for ions to diffuse in the nanoarray, and also provides a larger surface area for charge transfer reaction. The research results provide a certain reference value for the research of electrochromic near-infrared performance.

Abstract:In this paper, high-performance dual-functional electrodes based on tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) nanostructures are developed, which successfully realize the combination of electrochromism and energy storage. The WO 3 nanostructures with various morphologies (nanospindles, nanopetals, nanosheets, and nanobricks) were prepared via a facile hydrothermal process. It has been found that the WO 3 nanosheets possess large surface area and porous architecture, significantly increasing the amount of active sites and facilitating the transport of Li + ions. As dual-functional electrode, WO 3 nanosheets present enhanced electrochemical properties including wide optical modulation (64.5%), fast switching time (6.6/3.8 s), great coloration efficiency (48.9 cm 2 C −1 ), and high areal capacitance (14.9 mF cm −2 ). Furthermore, the WO 3 nanosheets could bridge electrochromic behaviors with energy storage by changing color during the charge/discharge processes. Abstract:Unique WO3/TiO2 core-shell nanowire heterostructures are rationally constructed based on a solvothermal method combining magnetron sputtering. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) analysis evidences the existence of a semi-coherent interface between a hexagonal phase WO3 core and anatase TiO2 shell. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and optical absorption spectra suggest an interfacial interaction between the WO3 core and TiO2 shell. The WO3/TiO2 core-shell nanowires exhibit superior electrochromic performance in both visible and near infrared regions with large optical modulation (87.0% at 1500 nm and 85.3% at 633 nm), short bleaching–coloration times (1.1 s and 3.0 s), decent coloring efficiency (102.1 cm2 C−1) and excellent cycling stability (95.6% after 3000 cycles). The obtained WO3/TiO2 core-shell nanowire heterostructures may find great potential in producing electrochromic nanodevices and other energy-efficient applications.

Abstract:Electrochromic technologies have recently attracted attention due to their energy-saving performance for reducing green gas emissions. The materials design and preparation of electrochromic materials with sufficient microstructure and crystallographic features for suitable ion intercalation/deintercalation are essential for high performance and efficiency. In the present work, nanostructured amorphous tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) films are electrodeposited to enhance electrochromic properties by controlling the pH of electrolytes. Electron microscopy and spectroelectrochemical analysis demonstrate that smaller grain sizes result in larger electrochemical reactive surface areas and shorter ion diffusion lengths. Consequently, the ions efficiently intercalated and deintercalated during the coloring and bleaching states, respectively. In particular, prepared WO 3 films at electrolyte pH 1.4 demonstrate high optical modulation (74.83%) and good transmittance switching speeds (1.56 and 2.06 s during coloring and bleaching, respectively) at 650 nm, as well as comparable coloration efficiency (61.92 cm 2 C −1 at 650 nm).
