Abstract:This study identifies and examines the channels through which corporate social responsibility (CSR) impacts firms' access to trade credit. Using a sample of Chinese firms, we identify two channels through which CSR impacts firms' access to trade credit: (i) better CSR performance reduces firms' systematic risk; and (ii) better CSR performance enhances trust from suppliers. We also document that the positive effect that CSR has on firms' access to trade credit is more pronounced in firms with limited access to formal financial resources, i.e., in non-state-controlled enterprises, especially those without political connections, and in firms located in regions with a lower level of social trust. Our findings are robust to a series of tests that address the endogeneity issue. Overall, we argue that CSR performance enhances firms' access to trade credit through the channels of systematic risk and trust enhancing.

Abstract:Amidst increasing global attention on corporate environmental responsibility, the impact of carbon emission disclosure on financial outcomes remains a pertinent question. Existing literature suggests that transparency in carbon disclosure can influence investor perception and capital costs, yet detailed mechanisms and broader economic implications are less understood. In this study, using data from Chinese publicly traded companies from 2017 to 2022, we investigate how carbon emission disclosure affects the implied cost of capital, with a focus on the mediating role of stock liquidity. Our findings reveal that enhanced transparency in carbon reporting significantly lowers the implied cost of capital by improving stock liquidity, a previously underexplored channel. This effect is particularly pronounced in sectors with high carbon footprints and within regions emphasizing sustainable finance policies. The results underscore the economic benefits of environmental transparency, suggesting that robust disclosure practices can serve as a strategic tool for firms to reduce financing costs while contributing to broader sustainability goals.

Abstract:Host and investing countries are faced with a tradeoff between growth and volatility arising from capital flows. The host country seeks capital inflows for high growth, yet worries about accompanying volatility so much that it limits capital market opening due to its financial weakness. However, the investing country solicits quick and safe returns from capital outflows by requesting wide foreign openness. It is often observed that one side's push for opening encounters the other side's reluctance. We examine how this conflict of interest is resolved for international compromise equilibrium through sequential bargaining between the two sides with private valuations of capital flows. We find that openness bargaining can end up with strategic delay after information revelation. This finding sheds light on certain puzzles in international finance. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:This paper analyzes the relationship between international trade and financial development by setting up a theoretical model in which financial development is closely associated with the industry structure. Developed countries will benefit from the trade open because their financially intensive sectors have comparative advantage. By contrast, developing countries with lower degree of financial development will suffer the shrink of financial sectors and decrease of external financial demand, even the deterioration of financial system after the trade open. We then use panel data of 47 sample countries to demonstrate this effect empirically.

Abstract:It is believed that the small size of typical private firms in China explains the difficulty faced by these firms in accessing financial resources.We use the 2004 economic census data to empirically test this hypothesis and find that private firms' borrowing costs are significantly higher than those of state-owned enterprises,even after controlling for firm size and a wide range of other firm characteristics.Furthermore,we discover an important channel through which private firms resolve the problem of securing financial resources,i.e.,through inter-firm trade credit.These results have implications on both financial reforms in China and other countries.

Abstract:The "Supply-side effect" on financial management caused by market imperfection has increasingly been concerned.During the transition period, there is strict securities regulation in China's capital market, which brings the supply-side constraints to corporate financing.Using the data of listed companies those take secondary equity offerings between 1993-2007 in China's A-share market, the paper examines how the change of regulation policies on SEOs affects corporate financing decisions.Our result shows that regulation policy is a significant factor to the amount of refinancing and the optimal capital structure.This result provides important evidence on how the equity regulation environment affects corporate financial management.

Abstract:This paper examines the corporate financing behaviour of listed companies in the People's Republic of China. Our results suggest that some determinants of firm leverage (e.g., size, asset tangibility, growth opportunities and profitability) commonly cited in studies on developed economies also appear to be important in China. In particular, the positive relationships that firm size and asset tangibility have with firm leverage are consistent with the predictions of the static trade-off capital structure model. However, these commonly quoted determinants function in a way different from that reported in developing countries. Moreover, we do not find that State ownership, legal person ownership and foreign ownership have important influences on the capital structure choices of Chinese firms. Given the tight regulatory control over equity issues and acute owner–manager incentive conflicts in State-owned firms, we also hypothesise, and find evidence to support, that Chinese firms have built-in incentives for raising equity. This provides one explanation of the negative effect of profitability on firm leverage and shows that some of the unique Chinese institutional features do help shape corporate financing behaviour.

Abstract:This paper provides transaction-level evidence about the impact of capital account liberalization on firms'bond issuance in the international financial market.Using bond issuance data for firms headquartered in China between 2014 and 2018,we showed that domestic private firms issued more bonds abroad than foreign-invested enterprises after restrictions were largely relaxed,controlling for possible confounding shocks such as monetary policy,local credit market shocks,US interest rate,carry trade,and global uncertainty shocks measured by the Chicago Board Option Exchange's Volatility Index.We found that domestic firms did not increase the overall volume of bond issuance but just had a higher portion of international bond issuance.We also found that domestic firms with higher tangible asset ratios tended to issue more bonds abroad.Our results suggest that targeted liberalization policy could effectively stimulate firms to issue bonds abroad.Policymakers need to monitor closely firms that issue more bonds abroad and thus have greater exposure to global shocks,incorporate these financial risks into policy design,and safeguardfinancial stability more effectively.
A Push over Trade Barriers: Firms’ Access to External Finance and Their Sales Hierarchy

Abstract:This article analyzes the effects of external finance on firms' decision to choose a firm type with different sales combinations, in the presence of both domestic and international trade costs. It utilizes a World Bank survey of firms operating in China in the early 2000s with a multinomial logit method to inform the study. Based on firms' sales destinations, we categorize firms in four exclusive types as Provincial Firms, Domestic Firms, Pure Exporters, and All Sellers to highlight domestic trade barriers across provincial borders and international trade barriers. We find that access to financial loans significantly raises firms' odds to overcome domestic and international trade barriers by choosing a firm type with sales beyond their home provincial borders and/or overseas. The effects vary across firm ownership types of being SOEs, foreign affiliates and private firms, highlighting their inherent differences. The results indicate loans' perceived importance, reflecting the inefficient loan allocations in China. Further, the results here help uncover the pervasiveness of China's domestic trade barriers: access to external finance significantly increases the odds for firms to sell outside their home provinces even if they did not feel local protection and more for those if they did.

Abstract:As a critical aspect of corporate financing strategies, high-quality trade credit has been acknowledged as a favorable indicator for external stakeholders. Given the increasing prominence of sustainable development, it is worthwhile to explore whether an advanced environmental management system facilitates the attainment of financing for business operations. Therefore, to respond to this question, this study utilizes panel data spanning from 2012 to 2021, comprising Chinese listed firms in four energy and environment-related sectors, with the environmental dimension score of the CSI ESG scoring system employed for categorizing the sample into high and low environmental governance groups. The results reconcile the conflicting studies and find an inverted U-shaped effect between trade credit and corporate bank loans with lower levels of environmental governance. Within the domain characterized by higher environmental governance, the two are substituted for each other. In addition, this study introduces the Shapely decomposition method for the first time to quantify the contribution of trade credit to corporate bank loans. Drawing from these findings, we proposed practical advice to firms, financial institutions, and the government on how to choose between bank loans and trade credit against the background of sustainable development.

Corporate digital transformation and financing constraints: The moderating effect of institutional investors

Abstract:In the age of digitization, digital transformation has emerged as a crucial pathway for companies to achieve sustainable development. In a sample of 24,103 firm-year observations from 3,508 listed companies in China's A-share market between 2007 and 2020, we investigate the relationship between corporate digital transformation and financing constraints based on dynamic capability theory. The proportion of intangible assets dedicated to digital technology is employed as a measure of the degree of digital transformation, and the SA index is utilized to assess the level of financing constraints. The findings demonstrate that digital transformation plays a significant role in alleviating financing constraints. In addition, greater institutional ownership leads to a pronounced negative correlation between digital transformation and financing constraints. From the perspective of dynamic capability theory, this study provides empirical evidence supporting research on economic consequences associated with digital transformation. Our results may contribute towards government formulation and implementation of policies promoting digital transformation to create a supportive external environment for businesses. Companies must seize opportunities associated with digital transformation to mitigate financing constraints.

Abstract:We investigate informal financing such as trade credit in China. The credit for both state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and non-SOEs dramatically increased over time. Our results suggest that non-SOEs rely more on trade credit financing, but this effect is mitigated by supplier’s liquidity position. Further results show that during financial crisis, non-SOEs reduce their account receivables due to high financing costs. Our research highlights the importance of informal financing and ownership structure in emerging markets.

Abstract:The clarity of an annual report is crucial for stakeholder understanding and trust, notably so in China, which is characterized by its unique high-context culture. This study investigates the impact of annual report readability on trade credit financing in Chinese listed companies. Beyond the measure derived from the Fog index, we employ innovative methodologies, including machine learning and the application of Chinese linguistic "hedge words", to refine the understanding of the relationship between annual report readability and trade credit financing. Our findings indicate that poor readability significantly restricts firms' access to trade credit financing, particularly for companies with limited international engagements and those with weaker product market power. These results remain consistent across different measures of report readability and trade credit financing.

Abstract:In an imperfectly competitive market, input tariff reduction may induce importers to partly pass-through the cost reductions and consequently increase their markups. Such effect is heterogeneous across industries, depending on the market structure. We utilize an unprecedented liberalization episode in China, namely its WTO accession, to estimate such heterogeneous impact of trade reform on firm markup. The results show that input tariff reduction increases firm markup, but only for importers. Furthermore, market structure matters: importers’ markups increase more due to input tariff reduction in less competitive industries. Finally, in contrast to output tariff, input tariff reduction increases industry markup dispersion.

Abstract:Recent reform in China has made a subset of Chinese stocks available to foreign investors, partially opening up China's stock market. Our difference-in-differences analysis shows that this liberalization reform boosts investments in investable firms relative to noninvestable ones, with results robust to various sensitivity analyses. Besides capital inflows and risk sharing, a potential but underexplored channel is improved corporate governance due to direct and indirect pressures from foreign investors, which lowers the cost of capital and improves capital allocation efficiency. Consistent with this corporate governance channel, we find that the liberalization reform reduces investable firms’ agency costs, increases their investment efficiency and total factor productivity, and improves their operating performance. Further analysis finds that the positive investment effect from the liberalization reform is stronger among firms that were poorly governed before the reform.
