Abstract:Amidst increasing global attention on corporate environmental responsibility, the impact of carbon emission disclosure on financial outcomes remains a pertinent question. Existing literature suggests that transparency in carbon disclosure can influence investor perception and capital costs, yet detailed mechanisms and broader economic implications are less understood. In this study, using data from Chinese publicly traded companies from 2017 to 2022, we investigate how carbon emission disclosure affects the implied cost of capital, with a focus on the mediating role of stock liquidity. Our findings reveal that enhanced transparency in carbon reporting significantly lowers the implied cost of capital by improving stock liquidity, a previously underexplored channel. This effect is particularly pronounced in sectors with high carbon footprints and within regions emphasizing sustainable finance policies. The results underscore the economic benefits of environmental transparency, suggesting that robust disclosure practices can serve as a strategic tool for firms to reduce financing costs while contributing to broader sustainability goals.

Abstract:As global awareness of environmental responsibilities intensifies, the significance of corporate Environmental information disclosure (EID) in decision‐making becomes increasingly prominent. However, its influence on bank lending decisions, especially in emerging markets like China, remains debated. Using 27,095 firm‐year observations between 2008 and 2020, this study examines the impact of both voluntary and mandatory EID on bank lending decisions. Findings indicate that banks incorporate EID into their lending decisions, offering favorable bank loan terms, both in terms of size and costs to firms with strong EID. To mitigate endogeneity concerns, we employ propensity score matching and a difference‐in‐difference methodology grounded in China's newly amended Environmental Protection Law, with consistent results across both tests. Our research identifies two possible economic mechanisms to explain why EID influences bank loan features: EID's potential to reduce firm‐specific risks and its alignment with local governmental incentives for green finance. Furthermore, our research suggests that voluntary EID, previously overlooked, proves more valuable than mandatory EID. We also find that the effectiveness of EID relies on banks' evaluations of the firm's sincerity and incentives behind the disclosure. Banks show a preference for voluntary EID from firms with minimal adverse selection concerns and mandatory EID from those highly motivated to disclose voluntarily. Moreover, we identify a synergy between EID and bank loans in fostering green innovation. This research not only bridges gaps in the existing bank financing literature but also offers insights into how EID can drive sustainable economic activities in developing economies.

This paper selects 946 listed companies of 16 heavily polluting industries in the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets as samples to explore whether environmental information disclosure can help companies increase bank credit support and reduce debt financing costs to transform their external pressures into internal motivation. The empirical results show that there is a significant positive correlation between environmental information disclosure and bank credit decisions. From the perspective of financing scale, heavily polluting companies have the inherent motivation to disclose environmental information actively and proactively to obtain more credit support. There is no significant relationship between the corporate debt financing cost and environmental information disclosure. This paper puts forward some critical policy suggestions for government decision makers, heavily polluting enterprises and financial institutions.

Abstract:The article uses hand-collected data regarding environmental information disclosure for Chinese 30 listed banks from 2009 to 2019 to investigate the effect of environmental information disclosure on banks' financial performance. Results show that the improvement in the quality of environmental information disclosure enhances the financial performance of banks, and this effect is intertemporal. In terms of the bank heterogeneity, national banks have a more significant effect of environmental information disclosure on their financial performance compared to regional banks. Furthermore, we provide evidence that the regional green development environment moderates the relationship between environmental information disclosure and banks' financial performance. The findings of our study add impetus for commercial banks to improve their environmental information disclosure.

Abstract:Given the widespread impacts of firm activities on the environment, firms are increasingly required to disclose environmental information. However, the relation between environmental information disclosure and firm financial performance is controversial and the mechanism through which environmental information disclosure affects financial performance is insufficiently investigated. This research examined the effect of environmental information disclosure on financial performance and explored the mediating effects of visibility (e.g., analyst coverage and institutional ownership) and liquidity. Panel data from 289 Chinese listed firms were analyzed with the assistance of STATA Software. The results revealed that environmental information disclosure positively (directly) affects financial performance. Further, environmental information disclosure also indirectly affects financial performance via analyst coverage (e.g., number of analysts and number of reports) and liquidity. Analyst coverage and liquidity mediate the relationship between environmental information disclosure and financial performance while institutional ownership has no mediating effect. According to the results, practical implications were discussed and future research directions were noted.

Abstract:Corporate environmental disclosure has gained prominence in capital markets, yet opinions vary on whether its benefits outweigh its costs. Based on a sample of Chinese listed A‐share firms spanning 2010–2020, we reveal that the environmental information disclosed by listed companies significantly enhances the economic value added. Key mechanisms include positive media attention, institutional investor shareholding and corporate R&D investment. Additionally, government investment in environmental governance plays a positive moderating role. Furthermore, we also find that non‐monetised disclosures bring more benefits than monetised ones. Also green signals have a peer effect in the same industry and province.

Abstract:Environmental information disclosure has become a widely-used tool to encourage the participation of multiple market players in environmental governance. However, it remains unclear whether it can promote the efficiency of capital allocation in enterprises. This study uses econometric modeling and data from heavily polluting enterprises in Chinese A-shares between 2013 and 2020 to explore the impact of environmental information disclosure on capital allocation efficiency, as well as its mechanisms. It is found that environmental information disclosure significantly and robustly enhances the efficiency of capital allocation, and the effect varies by firm's size, ownership, life cycle, and region. Nevertheless, employees and creditors are found to have a negative moderating role in this effect. These findings have important implications for the simultaneous improvement of environmental performance and capital allocation efficiency in the context of China's ecological civilization system and high-quality economic development and for promoting a "win-win" situation for environmental protection and economic growth.

Abstract:We investigate the effect of government‐initiated enterprise environmental credit ratings on firms' bank loans. While prior research indicates that companies with superior environmental performance tend to secure more bank loans, it is crucial to acknowledge that these performance metrics predominantly rely on voluntary corporate social responsibility or environmental, social, and governance disclosures made by the firms themselves or evaluated by third‐party agencies. Consequently, the evaluation results could be biased due to incomplete information disclosure, methodologies, or systems, raising concerns among scholars about potential "greenwashing" or symbolic environmental actions. In contrast, we employ a dataset comprising 27,388 observations from 2009 to 2021, applying propensity score matching and a time‐varying difference‐in‐difference model to better discern the relationship between firms' environmental credit ratings and their ability to obtain bank loans. Our findings highlight that firms participating in environmental credit evaluation can secure more bank loans compared to non‐participating firms. This effect is especially pronounced in regions with advanced green finance development. Further analysis shows that non‐state‐owned enterprises with excellent or good environmental credit ratings receive more loans, thus mitigating ownership bias in loan distribution. Overall, our results demonstrate that mandatory government environmental credit ratings mitigate information asymmetry by enabling lenders to better understand firms' environmental information.

Abstract:With the growing attention being paid to environmental issues by the public, environmental information disclosure (EID) has become a vital means for firms to convey their social responsibility and an important information source for lending institutions to assess firm credit risk. Based on the data of listed companies in China, a two-way fixed effects model is applied in this study to determine the impact of EID on the cost of debt. It reveals that EID can decrease companies' cost of debt and that both CEO duality and ownership concentration play vital roles in this relationship. After the consideration of endogeneity problems and robustness testing, the conclusions remain valid.

Abstract:While theoretical deductions propose that environmental disclosure helps reduce cost of capitals, this conclusion is not always supported in empirical investigations and many factors moderate this connection. In this paper, we re-examine the issue against a unique background, say in the new development stage of China that pursues a balance between economic growth and environmental protection. Specifically, we build an environmental disclosure index and relate it with the costs of equity and debt capitals. We find the disclosure does not significantly contribute to the variation in either cost, when the relationship is estimated in pooled samples. However, when regulation intensity is involved, the puzzle is resolve. In the debt market, we find institutional investors generally devalues environmental disclosure but appreciate disclosure by essentially polluting firms. In contrast, retail investors in the stock market generally respond to environment disclosure in a positive way, but the disclosure by traditionally recognized polluting firms leads to increase in the cost of equity capital. Our work features important heterogeneity between debt and equity markets, and also the role of regulation intensity in moderating the connection.

Abstract:Information asymmetry is a prominent problem in the advancement of green finance, and because of the difficulty of capturing “information”, research on the role of information factors in green finance has been limited. In this study, a quasi-natural experiment based on China’s environmental information disclosure system in 2008 is conducted to investigate the effect of information factors on green finance. Using the panel datasets of China’s 107 cities and 173 environmental protection firms from 2005 to 2015, this study, respectively, adopts the difference-in-difference (DID) method and triple difference (DDD) method to examine the effect of environmental information disclosure on regional green finance development and the utilization efficiency of green funds. According to the results, public disclosure of environmental information can promote both regional green finance development and the efficient utilization of green funds by energy-based environmental protection enterprises. Heterogeneity analysis at the regional level suggests that environmental information disclosure has a greater impact on green finance in regions with lower resource endowments and stronger environmental regulations. Heterogeneity analysis at enterprise level shows that compared to state-owned energy-based environmental firms, the efficiency of green capital utilization of non-state-owned energy-based environmental firms is more sensitive to the disclosure of environmental information. The findings of this paper provide a theoretical and empirical foundation for developing green finance.

Abstract:In view of the importance of environmental accounting to ecological governance, this article attempts to study the economic consequences of environmental information disclosure quality (EID) from the perspective of bank financing. We assume that good environmental information disclosure quality can help companies obtain bank loan, and then test this conjecture through empirical methods. The data of 330 listed companies in China’s heavy polluting industries were collected, and then analysed by SPSS for regression. The result shows that EID is positively related to the scale of corporate bank loan, which means the improvement of EID can bring convenience when companies need bank loans. The research clarifies the financial consequences of EID and provides some enlightenment for the improvement of corporate environmental disclosure quality.

Abstract:Based on social contract theory, this study investigates the impact of business strategy on environmental information disclosure from an informal institutional perspective. Using empirical data from a panel of Chinese listed A‐share firms in Shanghai and Shenzhen from 2010 to 2020, we demonstrate that firms following prospector strategies have higher levels of environmental information disclosure compared to those following defender strategies. Our findings also reveal that Confucian culture positively moderates the relationship between business strategy and environmental information disclosure. Specifically, we find that when environmental uncertainty increases, the moderating effect of Confucian culture weakens, while effective legal supervision strengthens the positive moderating effect of Confucian culture. Additionally, our results show that business strategy affects environmental information disclosure through the dual channels of economic benefits contract and social recognition contract. Overall, this research provides valuable insights for corporate sustainable development and effective government environmental governance.

Abstract:We investigate the financing strategies of environmentally responsible firms to understand how they set target capital structures and make incremental financing decisions. Literature shows that firms with better environmental performance have lower risk and better access to financing. However, it is not obvious how these firms choose to finance their investments. Using an extensive data set of U.S. firms, we find that firms with superior environmental performance have significantly lower debt ratios and use mostly short‐term debt for temporary financing needs. In doing so, environmentally responsible firms are able to achieve more tax savings and experience lower costs of financial distress. Our results provide new empirical facts about environmental performance and financing decisions, and they help explain the observed relationship between environmental performance and economic performance.

Abstract:Debt financing is an essential source of external funds for Chinese-listed companies, but enterprises in heavily polluting industries face more severe financing difficulties due to the "financing penalty effect." Solving the financing difficulties of heavy pollution enterprises has become a hot topic in academic and practical circles. This article applies heavily polluting listed companies from 2013 to 2022 in China as a sample to examine the impact of multiple blockholders (MB) on debt financing costs (DFC), considering the intermediary role of environmental information disclosure (EID). This article reveals that improved environmental information disclosure, driven by multiple blockholders, especially state-owned ones, can effectively reduce debt financing costs for heavily polluting enterprises compared to those dominated by a single major shareholder. These findings remain robust even after considering a series of checks, including the instrument variable method, propensity score matching (PSM), and alternative variables. In cases where the separation of ultimate control rights and cash flow rights is slight or the entity is state-owned, state-owned blockholders tend to exert a more effective governance role. Our research helps understand the role of multiple blockholders in corporate "green governance" and can provide a reference for alleviating the financing constraints of heavy-polluting enterprises.

Abstract:High-quality environmental information disclosure is not only an effective way for the firm to fulfill its environmental responsibility and promote green development, but also an important governance mechanism to reduce the degree of information asymmetry between the firm's management and shareholders and alleviate the agency conflict. As an important shareholder of a firm, there are two different hypotheses about the influence of institutional investors on firm decision-making and behavior: monitor and collusion. Institutional investors are not homogeneous, and there are significant differences in the impact of different types of institutional investors on firm decision-making and behavior. We divide institutional investors into the stable institutional investors and the unstable institutional investors, using the data of listed firms in China's A-share heavy pollution industry between 2008 and 2020, and this study explores the effect of institutional investors' heterogeneity on environmental information disclosure behavior from the perspective of environmental information disclosure quality. Empirical evidence shows that institutional investors as a whole have a positively significant impact on environmental information disclosure quality. Further analysis shows that the stable institutional investors have positive impact on environmental information disclosure quality compared with the unstable institutional investors. After a series of robustness tests, the conclusion is still valid. The results of this paper show that institutional investors, especially the stable institutional investors, can effectively reduce the degree of information asymmetry, alleviate the agency conflict of the firm, play an active role in corporate governance, strengthen the main responsibility of firm ecological environment protection, and promote the green development of firm. The conclusion of this paper has important reference significance for the regulators to formulate policies to improve environmental information disclosure quality and promote green development according to the heterogeneity of institutional investors.

Abstract:With firms gradually becoming the subject for energy consumption and environment pollution, it is pivotal that they disclose corporate environmental information for social supervision and fulfillment of social responsibility. Thus, it has been a hot topic as to how to improve the quality of corporate environmental information disclosure (EID). Drawing on the data of listed companies in the high-polluting industries between 2014 and 2017 in China, this paper conducts an empirical study on three questions with an in-depth investigation: (1) does the new media environment help in improving corporate EID quality; (2) whether this relationship is influenced by the property ownership of the corporate and local economic pressure; (3) what is the economic consequence of corporate EID. Our findings indicate that new media environment has a significantly positive effect on corporate EID quality, especially to state-owned enterprises. And firms with higher environmental disclosure quality enjoy better firm valuation. These findings help identify new driving factors of corporate EID and confirm that new media environment has performed a supplementary role in regulating corporate environmental behaviors, which can help develop green finance and promote ecological civilization.

Abstract:This study examines the impact of China's green credit policy on the environment. In particular, we consider an initiative that requires all banks to base their loan decisions on corporate environmental performance. This is an important issue since it is globally gaining popularity to leverage bank loans as an avenue to enforce corporate environmental responsibility. Moreover, there are only a handful of empirical investigations in relation to the impacts of credit constraint on corporate environmental behaviors and strategies. This research also provides useful insights on how to enhance environmental regulation enforcement, using the Environmental Protection Bureau in partnership with local banks to exert a creditable threat of financial constraint on unfavorable environmental outcomes. Using the synthetic control method and difference-in-differences analysis, we find that this policy has significantly motivated firms, particularly those firms with a higher dependence on external financing, to reduce water pollution. We further discover that the policy compels firms to favor pollution prevention at the source instead of end-of-pipe treatments, since the policy imposes a long-term credit constraint on pollution.
The dark side of digital finance: evidence from environmental information disclosure of Chinese listed companies

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to explore the relationship between corporate environmental information disclosure and digital finance. Design/methodology/approach The authors used Chinese listed enterprises as the sample. Data on digital finance are from the China Digital Inclusive Finance Index published by the Institute of Digital Finance of Peking University, and corporate environmental information disclosure is collected from the China Securities Market and Accounting Research database. Multivariate regression and Stata software were used for data analysis. Findings The findings suggest that digital finance significantly inhibits firms' environmental information disclosure. Digital finance increases firms' motivation to meet low-income customers' demands, which is achieved at the expense of environmental performance, leading to deteriorated environmental information disclosure. Furthermore, this inhibitory effect is exacerbated by managerial power but mitigated by institutional shareholdings and political connections. Practical implications The findings have important implications for policymakers and managers when formulating relevant policies regarding the co-development of digital finance and corporate environmental information disclosure. Social implications Environmental information disclosure is a crucial element in CSR disclosure quality. Originality/value This study enriches the literature on the environmental influences of digital finance by examining the relationship between digital finance and corporate environmental information disclosure, a crucial way through which external stakeholders obtain information about corporate environmental behaviours.
