Abstract:This paper reports on a facile hydrothermal route that has been developed to synthesize a precursor Gd(OH)2.14F0.86 and a novel phosphor host Gd6O5F8. The morphology of the micro-sized Gd(OH)2.14F0.86/Gd6O5F8 can be easily tuned in a controlled manner by altering the fluorine sources, alkali solutions, reaction time and the pH values of the initial solution. Under ultraviolet (UV) light, vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light and low-voltage electron beam excitation, the Gd(OH)2.14F0.86/Gd6O5F8:Ln3+ (Eu, Tb and Tm) samples show the characteristic f–f transitions of the Ln3+ ions and give bright red, green and blue emissions, respectively. The results prove that the as-synthesized Gd6O5F8 are excellent host lattices for rare earth luminescence, which may find potential applications in solid-state light, field emission displays (FEDs).

Abstract:Uniform and well-dispersed NaTb(MoO4)2 hierarchical nanoflowers have been fabricated via a hydrothermal method by using trisodium citrate as additive. The morphology and particle size of the NaTb(MoO4)2 samples can be tuned in a controlled manner by altering the pH value of the initial solution, reaction temperature, and component of solvent. The Eu3+-doped NaTb(MoO4)2 sample mainly shows the characteristic emission of Eu3+ corresponding to 5D0–7FJ (J=1, 2, 3, 4) transitions due to an efficient energy transfer from MoO42− and Tb3+ to Eu3+. The as-synthesized NaTb(MoO4)2:Eu3+ may be applied as a novel red phosphor in optoelectronic devices or advanced flat panel displays.

Abstract:Rare earth (RE3+)-doped NaY(MoO4)(2) nanocrystals are efficient materials for realizing multicolor emission, which plays an important role in displays, W-LEDs, solar cells and biolabeling. Up to now, research on the multicolor tuning properties of RE3+-doped NaY(MoO4)(2) nanoparticles has mostly focused on traditional preparation routes such as the hydrothermal method and sol-gel process. However, the products obtained using these methods are usually large in size (on the micron/submicron scale) and agglomeration problems are inevitable. With the development of nano optoelectronic devices and bioluminescence labeling, there is an urgent need to find an efficient method to prepare nanoscale, monodispersed and NaY(MoO4)(2):RE3+ nanocrystals (NCs) with good crystallinity and stronger emission properties. In this work, we demonstrate a simple, fast, reproducible and one-step synthesis of NaY(MoO4)(2):Eu3+ NCs with sizes varying from 1-20 nm via a ligand-assisted reprecipitation strategy. The reaction mechanism and emission intensities of NaY(MoO4)(2):Eu3+ NCs with various morphologies have been discussed in detail. Furthermore, Tb3+ and Eu3+ ion co-doped NaY(MoO4)(2) NCs were also prepared, and various emission colors were obtained and tuned from red, orange-red, yellow and yellow-green to green. Energy transfer between the Tb3+ and Eu3+ ions in the NaY(MoO4)(2) host matrix has also been demonstrated. Finally, a highly efficient and stable NaY(MoO4)(2):0.05Tb,0.04Eu NC-based W-LED device was built, which indicates the promising future application for this material in the field of lighting. The tunable multicolour emission, ease of preparation and nanosize reveal that NaY(MoO4)(2):RE3+ NCs have a potential application in full color displays and W-LEDs.

Abstract:Uniform and well-crystallized tetragonal NaGd(MoO4)2 nanocrystals with the morphology of nanocubes were synthesized via a modified hydrothermal synthesis method with oleic acid as complexing agent. The as-synthesized NaGd(MoO4)2 nanocubes were characterized by means of powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction respectively. The side-length of the NaGd(MoO4)2 nanocubes is about 100–150nm. The SAED pattern indicates highly crystalline nature of the NaGd(MoO4)2 nanocubes. The effect of Na2MoO4 contents on the formation of NaGd(MoO4)2 nanocrystals is investigated. A possible growth mechanism of NaGd(MoO4)2 nanocubes is deduced based on time-dependent morphology evolution and XRD analysis. Down-shifting/upconversion photoluminescence properties of NaGd(MoO4)2: Eu3+, Tb3+ and Yb3+/Er3+ nanocubes are investigated in detail. Furthermore, the energy transfer mechanism for upconversion luminescence in NaGd(MoO4)2: Yb3+/Er3+ nanocubes is investigated on the basis of energy level scheme and the excitation power dependence of upconversion luminescence intensities.

Abstract:Eu3+ and Tb3+ co-doped NaLa(MoO4)2 phosphors with various shapes have been synthesized by a simple conventional hydrothermal method. The morphology of the materials was found to be manipulated by changing the pH value of the precursor hydrothermal media. Uniform NaLa(MoO4)2 3D microspheres could be trapped at pH 5 and the spindle-like NaLa(MoO4)2 microstructures were obtained at pH 7. When the pH value was adjusted to 9, the flower-like NaLa(MoO4)2 microstructures were obtained. The luminescent properties of the NaLa(MoO4)2:Eu3+/Tb3+ samples with different morphologies prepared at different starting pH values were studied. The results show that the emission intensity of the product obtained at pH 5 is the strongest. Besides, under ultraviolet excitation the luminescence colors of NaLa(MoO4)2 samples co-doped with Eu3+ and Tb3+ can be tuned from red, through yellow and green–yellow, to green by simply adjusting the relative doping concentrations of the activator ions. This merit of multicolor emissions in the visible region endows the as-prepared products with potential application in the fields of light-display systems and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Systematic synthesis of scheelite-type double molybdate nano-/microcrystals NaLn (MoO4)(2) (Ln = La-Lu lanthanides and Y) was successfully carried out via hydrothermal reaction at 180 degrees C without using any organic additive, and the intrinsic effects of lanthanide contraction on phase preference and crystallite morphology were unambiguously observed. It was shown that the products of larger Ln(3+) (Ln = La-Dy) and smaller Ln(3+) (Ln = Ho-Lu and Y) elements crystallized as tetragonal NaLn (MoO4)(2) and new orthorhombic NaLnMo(2)O(8)center dot 2H(2)O structures, respectively, with the latter being able to dehydrate to tetragonal NaLn (MoO4)(2) upon calcination at similar to 300 degrees C. Y was found to be a demarcation point for the two structures, and phase preference was shown to be influenced by solution pH and MoO42-/Y3+ molar ratio. With Eu3+ as a downconversion (DC) luminescence probe, the effects of Ln type (Ln = La, Gd, Y and Lu) and crystal structure were manifested. Furthermore, the upconversion (UC) luminescence of Yb3+/Ho3+ and Yb3+/Er3+ pairs in NaLu(MoO4)(2) was studied for the first time, and strong red and green UC emissions were observed under the 978 nm laser excitation. Abstract:NaGd(MoO4)2:Ln3+(Ln = Eu, Tb) submicrometer phosphors have been synthesized by a composite method including the solid state reaction process at room temperature and the hydrothermal process. It is revealed that temperature and humidity have an influence on the reaction rate and that higher temperature and humidity can speed up the reaction process. Crystalline water is necessary for the solid phase reaction at room temperature. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns indicate that NaGd(MoO4)2:Ln3+(Ln = Eu, Tb) submicrometer phosphors crystallize well with the scheelite structure. Both scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images illustrate that the average grain size of NaGd(MoO4)2:Ln3+is about 225 nm without conglomeration. The luminescent lifetime and quantum efficiency for NaGd(MoO4)2:Eu3+are determined.

Abstract:Eu3+ doped NaGdF4 crystals were synthesized by hydrothermal methods. The effects of different temperatures and NaF concentration on the crystal structures and luminescence intensities were investigated. The intensity of D-5(0)-> F-7(2) transition of Eu3+ ions was closely related with the amount of GdF3 phase. The reduction of GdF3 phase could substantially enhance the ratio of D-5(0)-> F-7(2) transition and D-5(0)-> F-7(1) transition of Eu3+.

Abstract:Well-defined sodium lanthanum molybdate [NaLa(MoO4)2] microcrystals with a variety of morphologies (microspheres, ellipsoids, microspindles, microflowers, etc.) have been fabricated via a mild and controllable solvothermal method. The whole process was carried out without any organic surfactant, template, or catalyst. The morphology and size of the NaLa(MoO4)2 particles can be tuned in a controlled manner by altering the pH value of the initial solution, reaction temperature, and composition of solvent. Upon ultraviolet (UV) or near infrared (NIR) excitation, the as-synthesized NaLa(MoO4)2:Ln3+ phosphors exhibit intense characteristic down-conversion or up-conversion luminescence, respectively. The dependence of NaLa(MoO4)2:Ln3+ luminescence intensity on different particle sizes and morphologies has been also investigated. The facile synthesis strategy may be extended to the synthesis of other well-defined lanthanide molybdate materials.

Abstract:Novel chocolate-like scandium molybdate precursors with exposed {001} facets were hydrothermally synthesized in the presence of PVP, which were transformed into morphology-preserved Sc2Mo3O12 crystals by calcination at 800 degrees C for 2 h. The as-synthesized samples were characterized by XRD, FT-IR SEM, TEM, HRTEM, and PL analysis. Four different types of precursors including prismatic structures, octahedra, truncated octahedra and compressed decahedra could be obtained by varying the amount of MoO42-. Moreover, in the presence of H+, the percentage of high-energy {001} facets could be enhanced. The Mo sources, PVP consumption, reaction time and hydrothermal temperature had significant influences on the morphology of the precursors. As good matrix materials, the tunable down/upconversion (DC/UC) luminescence properties of Sc2Mo3O12:Ln(3+) (Ln = Tb, Eu, Tb/Eu, Yb/Er, Yb/Ho, Yb/Tm) were comprehensively investigated. It is found that the materials showed strong morphology-dependent luminescence properties. Particularly, the energy transfer (ET) of MoO42- -> Tb3+ -> Eu3+ resulted in multicolor emissions from green to red in Sc2Mo3O12:5%Tb3+, x%Eu3+. The Sc2Mo3O12:Ln(3+) (Ln = Tb, Eu, Tb/Eu, Yb/Er, Yb/Ho, Yb/Tm) microcrystals show great potential applications in the areas of fluorescent lamps and color displays.

Abstract:We present a solution-phase synthesis to selectively produce Gd2(WO4)3 microscale belts, stars and flowers under hydrothermal conditions. Different microstructures have been controllably obtained through adjusting the reaction temperature or adding surfactants. The phases and morphologies of the products have been well characterized by XRD, SEM and TEM. Possible formation mechanisms of the different Gd2(WO4)3 microstructures were proposed based on the investigation of the growing process of these microstructures. After doping Eu3+ and Tb3+ inside these Gd2(WO4)3 microstructures, strong and multi-color emission has been realized. Notably, tunable emissions and a warm-white color have been achieved in the Eu3+ and Tb3+ co-doped microstructures. These uniform microstructures are expected to find a broad range of applications in future color displays and light-emitting devices.

Abstract:Novel Sc2Mo3O12:Ln3+ (Ln = Eu, Tb, Dy, Tb/Eu, Dy/Eu) phosphors have been synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal route using glycine (Gly) as a surfactant. The phosphors were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), photoluminescence (PL), and luminescence decays. It was found that various surfactants had a profound influence on the crystal phase, morphology and emission intensity of the final products. Furthermore, the photoluminescence of Ln3+-doped Sc2Mo3O12 phosphors (Ln = Eu, Tb, Dy, Tb/Eu, Dy/Eu) was studied in detail. The energy transfer of MoO42− → Tb3+ (Dy3+) → Eu3+ and multicolor tunable emission occurred by changing the ratio of Tb3+/Eu3+ or Dy3+/Eu3+ under single wavelength excitation. Moreover, the energy transfer mechanism from Tb3+ (Dy3+) to Eu3+ was ascribed to dipole–dipole interactions and the energy transfer efficiency from Tb3+ to Eu3+ (95.3%) was higher than that from Dy3+ to Eu3+ (87.5%). Their tunable multicolor luminescence properties make Sc2Mo3O12:Ln3+ (Ln = Eu, Tb, Dy, Tb/Eu, Dy/Eu) phosphors suitable for many potential applications in the fields of color displays and fluorescent lamps.

Abstract:Well-defined NaGd(MoO4)2 octahedral microcrystals have been synthesized via a simple hydrothermal route. The whole process was carried out under aqueous conditions without the use of any organic surfactant, solvent, or catalyst. During the synthesis process, the pH value of the initial solution plays a crucial role in determining the morphology and particle size of the final products. The as-obtained NaGd(MoO4)2:Ln3+ (Ln=Eu, Tb, Dy, and Sm) phosphors show intense red, green, yellow, and orange–red emissions under ultraviolet excitation, which can be confirmed by the CIE coordinates. The as-synthesized luminescent materials may find potential applications in fields of fluorescent lamps, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Pure tetragonal phase, uniform and well-crystallized sodium gadolinium molybdate (NaGd(MoO 4 ) 2 ) nanocrystals with diverse morphologies, e.g. nanocylinders, nanocubes and square nanoplates have been selectively synthesized via oleic acid-mediated hydrothermal method. The phase, structure, morphology and composition of the as-synthesized products are studied. Contents of both sodium molybdate and oleic acid of the precursor solutions are found to affect the morphologies of the products significantly and oleic acid plays a key role in the morphology-controlled synthesis of NaGd(MoO 4 ) 2 nanocrystals with diverse morphologies. Growth mechanism of NaGd(MoO 4 ) 2 nanocrystals is proposed based on time-dependent morphology evolution and X-ray diffraction analysis. Morphology-dependent down-shifting photoluminescence properties of NaGd(MoO 4 ) 2 : Eu 3+ nanocrystals and upconversion photoluminescence properties of NaGd(MoO 4 ) 2 : Yb 3+ /Er 3+ and Yb 3+ /Tm 3+ nanoplates are investigated in detail. Charge transfer band in the down-shifting excitation spectra shows a slight blue-shift and the luminescence intensities and lifetimes of Eu 3+ are decreased gradually with the morphology of the nanocrystals varying from nanocubes to thin square nanoplates. Upconversion energy transfer mechanisms of NaGd(MoO 4 ) 2 : Yb 3+ /Er 3+ , Yb 3+ /Tm 3+ nanoplates are proposed based on the energy level scheme and power dependence of upconversion emissions. Thermometric properties of NaGd(MoO 4 ) 2 : Yb 3+ /Er 3+ nanoplates are investigated and the maximum sensitivity is determined to be 0.01333 K −1 at 285 K.

Abstract:This work reports a simple hydrothermal route using citric acid as a "shape modifier" for the controlled synthesis of luminescent TbPO4:Eu nanocrystals. The size and morphology of products change remarkably when the proportion of citric acid involved in the reaction increases. The multiple roles that citric acid plays during the controlled synthesis are discussed to try to understand the crystallization and growth dynamics of TbPO4 crystals. The photoluminescence properties of TbPO4:Eu are investigated. The excitation spectra and the variation of the D-5(4) lifetime values as a function of the Eu3+ concentration points out the occurrence of Tb3+-to-EU3+ energy transfer, resulting in a maximum absolute emission quantum yield of 0.14. The possibility to tune the size, the shape, and the optical properties of the nanocrystals reported in this work might be useful for applications in optoelectronics or biolabeling. Moreover, this simple approach might also be applied for the synthesis of other luminescent phosphates.
Morphology Controllable Synthesis and Upconversion Luminescence of Gd4O3F6: Ho3+, Yb3+ for Temperature Sensing

Abstract:A series of Yb3+, Ho3+ co-doped Gd4O3F6 with different morphologies (nanoparticles, oval and capsule-like submicrocrystals) and sizes are prepared by a facile hydrothermal route. The results of X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy show that all pH values, organic additives and Li+ concentration play a significant effect on the crystallinity and morphology of the samples. And then, these conditions influence the upconversion (UC) luminescence intensity excited by 980 nm laser without changing the ratio of green and red emitting light obviously. Moreover, after introducing Tm3+, Gd4O3F6: Tm3+, Ho3+, Yb3+ exhibits excellent multicolor emission in the visible region. The corresponding UC mechanisms are elucidated through the laser power dependence of UC emissions. Furthermore, the temperature-dependent UC luminescence of Gd4O3F6: Ho3+, Yb3+ and Gd4O3F6: Tm3+, Ho3+, Yb3+ are investigated, and the results show that the ratio of green to red emission in Gd4O3F6: Ho3+, Yb3+ and Gd4O3F6: Tm3+, Ho3+, Yb3+ both respond single exponentially to temperature, which suggests their application for sense temperature.
