Abstract:ZnO nanowire inorganic/organic hybrid ultraviolet (UV) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have attracted considerable attention as they not only combine the high flexibility of polymers with the structural and chemical stability of inorganic nanostructures but also have a higher light extraction efficiency than thin film structures. However, up to date, the external quantum efficiency of UV LED based on ZnO nanostructures has been limited by a lack of efficient methods to achieve a balance between electron contributed current and hole contributed current that reduces the nonradiative recombination at interface. Here we demonstrate that the piezo-phototronic effect can largely enhance the efficiency of a hybridized inorganic/organic LED made of a ZnO nanowire/p-polymer structure, by trimming the electron current to match the hole current and increasing the localized hole density near the interface through a carrier channel created by piezoelectric polarization charges on the ZnO side. The external efficiency of the hybrid LED was enhanced by at least a factor of 2 after applying a proper strain, reaching 5.92%. This study offers a new concept for increasing organic LED efficiency and has a great potential for a wide variety of high-performance flexible optoelectronic devices.
Surface Morphology, Electrochemical and Electrical Performances of ZnO Thin Films Sensitized with Ag Nanoparticles by UV Irradiation

Abstract:Pure zinc oxide and Ag/ZnO thin films were prepared via two step method. The crystal structure, topography, chemical composition and optical properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectrophotometer and laser micro-Raman spectrometer. XRD, FE-SEM and XPS results indicated that Ag nanoparticles were successfully deposited on the zinc oxide nanorods. Ag nanoparticles on the zinc oxide nanorods would extend the photoabsorption region and reduce the electron transition from CB to VB. The photoelectrochemical performances of ZnO thin film could be effectively enhanced by moderate Ag nanoparticles modification. Under sunlight illumination, the photocurrent of the Ag-0.5/ZnO electrode was about three times as large as that of the zinc oxide electrode. The charge transfer process for the Ag/ZnO electrode under sunlight illumination has been discussed. With the increase of Ag content, the resistivity of the sample decreases sharply.

Abstract:A layer-by-layer assembly technique was developed to synthesize the hybrid nanostructures of Au nanocrystals with diameter of about 5nm and ZnO nanorods via the electrostatic interaction. In comparison with ZnO nanorods, the Au–ZnO hybrid nanostructures exhibited the broadened and red-shifted surface plasmon band, enhanced band gap emission, and suppressed defect emission due to the strong interfacial coupling between Au and ZnO. Moreover, the band gap emission of the Au–ZnO hybrid nanostructures is controllably blue-shifted with decreasing distance between the Au nanocrystals and ZnO nanorods tuned by the amount of the polyelectrolyte layers due to the exciton and plasmon interactions.

Abstract:We successfully synthesized Au-ZnO hybrid nanoparticles with a novel hexagonal pyramid-like structure. The growth process of the as-prepared hybrid nanopyramids is clearly discussed. Because of their homogeneous composition and controlled morphology, the Au-ZnO hybrid nanopyramids demonstrate better photocatalytic efficiency than pure ZnO nanocrystals.

Abstract:Photoinitiated interfacial electron transfer from organic semiconductors to inorganic ones is extremely important in organic/inorganic hybrid optoelectronic materials. Herein, we have prepared hybrid ZnO nanorods by grafting TDPP and TTDPP molecules through carboxyl acid groups. The steady-state spectroscopy results revealed that photoluminescence was subjected to severe quenching in the hybrid nanocomposites. Furthermore, time-resolved fluorescence and femtosecond transient absorption data verified the occurrence of the interface charge transfer between TDPP or TTDPP molecules and ZnO nanorods in the hybrid nanocomposites. The high performance UV-vis photodetector based on the TTDPP/ZnO hybrid have been fabricated with a photoresponsivity of 16.9 A W-1 and an on/off ratio as high as 10(4). The excellent visible-light photoresponse of the hybrid device can be attributed to the broadband absorption after the anchoring of the TTDPP compound on the surface of ZnO nanorods, the efficient cascade charge transfer process and the excellent capability of ZnO nanorods to provide direct and stable pathways for the transport of photogenerated electrons toward the collection electrode. This provides guidelines for the construction of organic/inorganic hybrids for optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:ZnO thin films were deposited using an electrodeposition method and porous morphologies could be achieved by annealing treatment. A variety of Ag nanoparticles were loaded on the surface of the ZnO thin films. Surface morphology, chemical composition, crystal phase and optical properties were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–vis spectrophotometer and micro-Raman spectroscopy. Evidence of Ag nanoparticles on the Ag-4/ZnO thin film was be verified by the SEM and XPS measurements. The XRD results indicated that the Ag nanoparticles had little effect on crystallinity of the thin films. The photoresponse and photocatalytic results indicated that the photocurrent and photocatalytic performance could be enhanced by moderate Ag nanoparticles modification on the surface of the ZnO thin film. The best photoresponse and photocatalytic activity in Ag-4/ZnO thin film results from the moderate Ag nanoparticles on the surface of ZnO thin film, which could enhanced separation and suppressed recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs.
Highly Uv Luminescent Zno Microtetrapod-On-Nanowire Hybrids

Abstract:The author reports the first all-ZnO microtetrapod-on-nanowire hybrids using the cost-effective Au nanoseed assisted open static atmospheric pressure vapor transport method. The unconventional ZnO flower analogue hybrid structure consists of center-tapered ZnO microtetrapods (typically 1-2 microm in dimension) on ZnO 'backbone' nanowires (typically 20 nm in diameter). Three new Raman peaks, centered at 225, 275, 561 cm( - 1), never seen before in ZnO nanocrystals, were first observed in the ZnO hybrids. The hybrids exhibit excellent luminescent properties with a single ultraviolet emission band centered at about 377 nm with an ultra-narrow full width at half maximum of approximately 4 nm, which makes it a promising candidate for optoelectronic applications. A preliminary self-assembled synergic growth mechanism is proposed to understand the formation of the structurally stable morphology where the vapor-liquid-solid and vapor-solid mode work together. Our results could open up possibilities for making ZnO nanocrystals to a new level of more complex nanoarchitectures.
Hollow ZnxCd1−xS Nanospheres with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity under Visible Light

Abstract:Formation of solid solutions is a good strategy to acquire materials with special properties and bring forth new type of applications or enhance the performance of currently existing devices. In this study, hollow ZnxCd1-xS nanospheres with different molar ratios were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal process. The products were fully characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. It was found that the photocatalysis performance of the as-prepared samples could be enhanced by formation of ZnxCd1-xS solid solutions. In addition, their photocatalytic activities are dependent on the Zn/Cd molar ratios and nanostructures of ZnxCd1-xS solid solutions. Hollow Zn0.2Cd0.8S spheres exhibit extremely high photocatalytic activity and good re-usability, and the photocatalytic conversion of RhB reaches as high as 96% after 50 min of irradiation.
Realization of a high-Responsivity ultraviolet sensor base on ZnO nanowires modified by Au nanoparticles

Abstract:In this paper, an ultraviolet photodetector based on ZnO nanowires modified by Au nanoparticles. Due to the high specific surface area of the nanowires and the nano-plasmonic enhancement induced by the adsorbed Au nanoparticles, the measurements reveal a higher photocurrent compared with pure ZnO photodetectors. The dark current was reduced cause of the Schottky junction between metal and semiconductor. By calculation, the maximum responsivity in ultraviolet band of obtained device is up to 9.4A/W at operating bias. Another role of Au NPs adsorbed on the surface of NWs is the scattering effect, which may contribute to more photo absorption. The results indicated that nano-plasmonic enhancement effect could be efficient for UV region and the demonstration of the as-fabricated device provides a feasible and cost-effective method to potential application for UV optoelectronic device.

Abstract:Using sunlight as renewable resource has stimulated the development of sustainable photocatalysts that can collect visible light. Semiconductor nanowire-based photocatalysts have attracted increasing interest due to their unique optical, electronic, and structural advantages. Here, noble metal-semiconductor hybrid Au/ZnO nanowires have been fabricated by chemical vapor deposition method. The hybrid photocatalysts were well characterized by SEM, TEM, EDS, XRD, XPS, UV–visible spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Compared with ZnO nanowires, Au/ZnO heterostructures exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance due to the synergistic combination of Au and ZnO. Optical properties were modeled to support our interpretation of photocatalytic mechanisms. Our work provides a feasible strategy to prepare plasmonic photocatalysts and will also deepen the understanding of the plasmon enhanced photocatalytic performance in hybrid photocatalysts.

Abstract:In this study, we present a facile strategy for the fabrication of Au/ZnO-hollow-sphere-monolayer thin films. ZnO hollow spheres were synthesized by a template technique based on polystyrene (PS). ZnO and Au nanoparticles (NPs) were simultaneously deposited by DC magnetron sputtering. The as-prepared ZnO spheres exhibit a hollow structure with an obvious contrast between the thin ZnO shell and the interior. The Au/ZnO-hollow-sphere-monolayer thin films showed significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance in the degradation of MO compared with that of the ZnO thin film and ZnO-hollow-sphere-monolayer thin films. The observed degradation constant k of MO for the Au/ZnO-400 nm sample was 0.0415 min(-1), which is approximately 17 times that of the ZnO thin film (0.0024 min(-1)) and 3 times that of the ZnO-400 nm sample (0.0128 min(-1)). The enhancement in photocatalytic activity was attributed to the synergistic effect of the transfer of effective charges from the ZnO conduction band to the plasmonic Au NPs and the light trapping within the ZnO hollow spheres. Enhanced Photoelectric Performance in Self-Powered UV Detectors Based on ZnO Nanowires with Plasmonic Au Nanoparticles Scattered Electrolyte

Abstract:Vertically aligned ZnO nanowires (NWs) were grown on a fluorine-doped tin-oxide-coated glass substrate by a hydrothermal method. Au nanoparticles were well dispersed in the mixed solution of ethanol and deionized water. A simple self-powered ultraviolet detector based on solid–liquid heterojunction was fabricated, utilizing ZnO NWs as active photoanode and such prepared mixed solution as electrolyte. The introduction of Au nanoparticles results in considerable improvements in the responsivity and sensitivity of the device compared with the one using deionized water as electrolyte, which is attributed to the enhanced light harvesting by Au nanoparticles.

Abstract:The development of high-performance photocatalysts is central to efforts focused on taking advantage of solar energy to overcome environmental and energy crises. Integrating different functional materials artfully into nanostructures can deliver more efficient photocatalytic activity. Here, sandwiched ZnO@Au@CdS nanorod films were synthesized via successive ZnO nanorod electrodeposition, Au sputtering and CdS electrodeposition. The as-synthesized composites were characterized by UV-vis spectrophotometer, x-ray diffractometer, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Their photocatalytic activity was assessed by degrading Rhodamine B solution under visible light irradiation. ZnO@Au@CdS exhibited better photocatalytic performance than ZnO@CdS throughout the visible light region, and the corresponding enhancement factor of Au nanoparticles was measured as a function of CdS loading amount, and it could reach 190% with CdS deposition for 1 min. The normalized rate constant could reach 0.387 h-1 for ZnO@Au@CdS-1min, which was equivalent to or better than results in reference photocatalysts. The enhancement mechanism of Au nanoparticles was estimated by comparing the monochromatic photocatalytic action spectra with the absorption spectrum of ZnO@Au@CdS, and it was mainly determined by incident photon energy. With selective excitation of Au nanoparticles by incident photons, the excited hot electrons in Au NPs are transferred to the conduction band of ZnO to boost photocatalytic reaction. With selective excitation of CdS, the enhanced interband absorption of CdS and relay station effect of Au nanoparticles should be responsible for the enhanced photocatalytic performance. Our work not only opens the door to the design of efficient supported photocatalysts, but also helps to understand the enhancement mechanism of LSPR effect on the photoelectric conversion of semiconductors.

Abstract:The localized surface plasmon resonance enhancement of a Cu2O photodetector was realized by Ag nanoparticles (NPs) that were fabricated by electrochemical deposition. A ZnO nanowire was used to accelerate carrier separation. An increase of responsivity was achieved based on the coupling interaction between the surface plasmon resonance in the Ag NPs and the Cu2O film. The photodetector possessed high responsivity (0.27A/W). Compared to the device without Ag NPs, the responsivity was enhanced 20-fold. The excellent comprehensive performance of the Cu2O/ZnO photodetector reveals that localized surface plasmon resonance is an efficient way to improve the performance of Cu2O-based photodetectors.
Plasmonic Enhancement of Au Nanoparticle–Embedded Single-Crystalline ZnO Nanowire Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:This paper describes the enhanced efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) incorporating Au nanoparticle–embedded single-crystalline ZnO nanowire (Au NPs@ZnO NW) arrays. We fabricated these Au NPs@ZnO NW arrays through sequential hydrothermal ZnO growth, with the Au NPs deposited in between the two ZnO growth processes. Interestingly, despite the presence of embedded Au NPs, the ZnO NWs exhibited continuously matched periodic atomic arrangements across the ZnO NW core and shells, indicating that they were single-crystalline. The surface plasmon resonance peaks of the Au NPs on the ZnO NW arrays and of the Au NPs@ZnO NW arrays appeared near 526 and 574nm, respectively; the red-shift of the latter signal confirmed the embedded geometry of the Au NPs in the ZnO NW arrays. Photovoltaic measurements of the Au NPs@ZnO NW DSSCs revealed enhancements in efficiency that depended on the lengths of the ZnO NWs in the arrays; these efficiencies were all greater than those of corresponding ZnO NW–only DSSCs by at least 20%. In accordance with the geometry of our devices and the improved dye absorption within them, it appears that the near-field localized surface plasmon of the Au NPs in the ZnO NWs was the principal factor governing the enhanced power conversion efficiency.

Abstract:Hydrothermally processed ZnO nanorods decorated by Au nanoparticles have been demonstrated to exhibit extraordinary optoelectronic properties. With the introduction of Au nanoparticles modification, the ultraviolet responsivity has been greatly enhanced by approximately 200 times, up to 1244 A/W, compared with that of pristine ZnO. This work will be promising for designing high responsivity ZnO photodetector.

Abstract:ZnO nanowires with Au nanoparticle decoration were prepared. Photoluminescence results reveal quenching of both the band edge and visible emissions of ZnO nanowires after the Au nanoparticle decoration. The field emission properties from Au nanoparticles decorated ZnO nanowires were measured and increasing turn-on fields were observed. The observed phenomena wereattributed to electron transport between ZnO and Au nanoparticle.

Abstract:Surface plasmon resonance can be exploited to improve the performance of the photodetectors. However, it may cause the increase of dark current as a side effect. The enhancement of responsivity is highly dependent on the device structure involving SPR and the situations of the metal nano-particles. In this paper, we reported the responsivity enhancement of the ZnO UV detectors with SPR based on a structure in which Ag nano-particles are embedded in ZnO film, without the apparent increase of dark current. We found that the characteristic wavelength for SPR absorption is 380 nm, well predicted by Mie theory. And the spectral responsivity peak value increases from 472 mA/W to 10.522 A/W, by 22.3 times. The good matching between enhancement spectra and SPR absorption spectra confirms that the responsivity enhancement is resulted from SPR. Our results are of great importance in improving the photodetectors based on SPR effects, which may be widely used in light detection. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Photoactive material consisting of heterogeneous Ag–ZnO nanowires (NWs) was prepared by electrospinning. Tunable UV photodetectors fabricated using Ag–ZnO NWs have shown high sensitivity up to over four orders of magnitude with relatively fast and stable response speed. The mechanism for this colossal photoconductivity is elucidated by means of the efficient exciton dissociation under UV illumination due to accelerated electron transfer from conduction band of ZnO to Ag nanoparticles. The facile process proposed here may pave the way for designing sensing and imaging systems.
