Abstract:This paper analyses the implementation of multicast on 3G network, especially on UMTS. Two most important methods existing in this field, the CBS enhanced proposal and multicast PDP context proposal are reviewed and compared in detail. Then, an IP multicast proposal, which is more fit to the evolution trends of current 3G and beyond, is put forward at the end of the paper.

Abstract:Computer networks are undergoing a remarkable transformation. The widespread use of optical fiber has tremendously increased network bandwidth. Furthermore, greater CPU power, increasing disk capacity, and support for digital audio and video are creating demand for a new class of network services. For example, video-on-demand (VOD), distant learning, distant diagnosis, video conferences, and many other applications have popped up one after another in recent years. Many of these services have one thing in common. They all require that the same data be sent to multiple recipients. Even in traditional networks, this operation, called multicasting, can not be handled easily and cheaply. When scaled up to high-speed ATM-based networks, the situation becomes more difficult. Multiple data streams travel around the ATM networks with each stream sent to many different destinations simultaneously. Therefore, the networks need a very efficient algorithm for multicast routing. This paper proposes an algorithm for multicast routing in ATM networks. The network routing cost is defined as the combination of the cost of establishing connections, the cost of overall bandwidth and the cost of overall switching. Our routing algorithm generates an optimal multicast routing with minimal overall network cost.

Abstract:Each wireless technology now used is optimized just for some particular applications and environments. However, the next generation wireless networks coexisting with fiber-optic based broadband communication networks will be required to operate over a wide range of cell size (from picocell to massive satellite cell) and offer multimedia services where each service may have a unique rate. A new architecture of wireless network, wireless ATM, is proposed in this paper, which consolidates various radio environments and applications under a single protocol. The wireless ATM architecture embedded into B-ISDN protocol stack can adapt a wide range of physical channels. Abstract:With the rapid progress of multicast applications and more users participating in it, IP multicast has been an important subject in both research and development. In the meantime, due to the rapid promulgation of mobile devices and progress in wireless technology these years, it is imperative to determine the best way to provide services to mobile equipment. Because IP multicast naturally has the merit of high scalability and efficiency, which is more significant for mobile environment whose resource is much limited, more and more people pay attention to these two techniques, and many efforts are being made to bring them together. In this paper, a comprehensive survey on mobile multicast arithmetics and schemes is given, the advantages and application range of these arithmetics or schemes are discussed respectively, also the shortcomings and problems existed are anatomized in depth, and then a comprehensive comparison is given. In view of poor reliability in mobile environment, a detailed investigation of new problems when implementing reliable multicast to mobile hosts is given, and some related works are introduced. It was hoped that the illustration and discussion presented here would be helpful for developers in selecting an appropriate mobile multicast arithmetic or protocol for their specific needs. In the end, the future trend of combining multicast and mobile is discussed.

Abstract:Multicast is an important research topic for the Internet.Recent research shows some intrinsic limitation in IP Multicast,and Application Layer Multicast (ALM) is proposed.In this article we discuss and classify some major algorithms proposed for ALM.The fundamental problems in ALM research are identified and the metrics for evaluation of ALM algorithms are summarized.Some topics (e.g.,Overlay Network,media encoding method) are also discussed for their close relationship with ALM research.Finally,some possible directions for future research are discussed.

Abstract:Multicast provides an efficient way for one-to-many and multi-party communication. It is a key technique for the next-generation Internet applications. The conventional work on multicast emphasizes on providing multicast mechanism in IP protocol layer. However, the deployment of IP multicast is constrained by the modification to the op- erational Internet infrastructure and is hampered by a lot of unsolved technical problems. In the recent two years, the research trend on Peer-to-Peer (P2P) gives new light on multicast, and Application Layer Multicast (ALM) begins to attract wide attention. ALM protocols organize a set of hosts into an overlay tree for data delivery and all multicast related functions are implemented within end system. The shift of multicast functions from routers to hosts has the potential to address most problems associated with IP multicast, but also presents new challenges. This paper analy- ses the characteristics of ALM research from distributed system perspective, describes the technologies and difficulties involved in ALM design, and summarizes current work and progress.

Abstract:Collective communications play an important role in parallel computing. Many features of an ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) switch environment can be exploited in the design of collective operations. A collective communications framework is presented based on ATM - hybrid-tree, which fully takes advantage of the features supporting multicast of ATM and is suitable to implement collective communications in dynamic groups. The problems of the maintenance of the hybrid-tree are completely solved by the group management protocol and methods to maintain the hybrid-tree.

Abstract:In this paper we study the key issues of the real-time video transfer system when applying multicast technology.First we introduce an application-level high-performance multicast transport protocol RTMTP to offer guarantees of real-time and stable video transmission.Second,we improve the management of flow control by adding the component Video Repeater,avoiding the traditional way in which centralized and inflexible methods are applied.Third,packet forwarding is achieved through hierarchical service control of Repeaters.Finally,the implementation of a solution is issued and the performance of a sample system based on it is tested.

Abstract:Describes networking management architecture of ATM based on SNMP,presents a model of management information,transfers the protocol used by SNMP and presents an analysis of the topology of ATM network. SNMP can manage effectively ATM network,the core of B-ISDN, and was easier to implement than other management protocol. On the basis of ATM Forum and RFC,model of management information was made,Manager and Agent was described in detail especially in ILMI interface. This model can be applied to ATM switch and is simpler and more efficient and lower in cost than CORBA or TMN (Q3).

Abstract:Internetware tends to resolve the integrating and sharing of various kinds of resources in open,dynamic and changing Internet environment.In the recent years,streaming media applications becomes more and more popular on the Internet,which introduced challenging issues such as resource sharing and bandwidth saving.Application layer multicast has shown to be efficient in reducing network traffic for large-scale multimedia applications.However,interactive operations such as VCR may cause frequently reconstruction of multicast trees,which will degrade the system performance.We proposed a protocol called ISMT (Interactive Streaming Multicast Tree) to construct and maintain interactive application layer multicast trees,which aims at reducing user response delay and enhancing system scalability.The effectiveness of the ISMT protocol is validated by simulations.

At first, the paper analyzes the methods of Remote subscription and Home subscription, points out the latent problem in mobile ip protocol,and gives the methods of mobile multicast and multicast agent to solve mobile multicast problem, then compares delivery cost of multicast and delivery delay of multicast packets as well as disruption of multicast service due to mobility in four kinds of methods of mobile multicast.

Abstract:The multicast of Streaming Media over the Internet is an important component of many current and future Internet applications. The heterogeneity and lacking of QoS guarantee make the application of this technique a challenge. In this paper, we analyze the difficulties in streaming media multicast design, survey technologies that have been proposed for it. We also discuss several congestion control and error control mechanisms. Finally we present some remained issues for further research.

Abstract:In this article, we briefly present the design and software architecture of an IP/ATM multiple sub-network router. We establish queue model of the IP process module and propose a traffic-based scheduling mechanism (AICS: Adaptive Incomplete Cyclic Service), on the basis of our prior work. We also provide a simulation study on the system throughput and packet delay jitter performance for both AICS mechanism and IICS mechanism proposed in prior work. Simulation results show that, comparing with IICS, AICS can provide much better packet delay jitter performance when high speed sub-networks exist bursty traffic and give better fairness.

Abstract:In this paper, we examine the end-to-end performance of for Internet DTV and analyze the difficulties of network DTV programs multicast. Then we propose two end system-based multicast sending rate control algorithms, Buffer-based. Network-adaptive Multicast Rate Control approach (BNMRC) and Improved TFMCC based Sending Rate Control (ITSRC), both of which can suit for the change of network traffic and satisfy the requirement of DTV decoder by controlling sending rate logically. The test results show that they have good practical value in comparison with existing TFMCC.

Abstract:A prototype of an ATM-based real-time multimedia communication system is developed over Fore Runner ASX-200 ATM switches and the Sun Spare/Solaris platform with ATM adapters and Video Plus. The system includes video/audio collection, compression, playback and transmission over ATM VBR SVC (variable bit-rate switched virtual connection). Client-server mode is adopted in the system to manage the two styles of connection: multicasting and point-to-point connection between two users. A method is also proposed to support the request to join a multicasting group initiated by a client over UNI 3.0/3.1 signaling. To facilitate VBR video over ATM, a leaky-bucket rate control method is developed and employed for reliable and efficient video communication. A multimedia distance learning system built over our framework is also introduced in the paper.

Abstract:Real-time multimedia communication in heterogeneous computing environments and high perfor mance broad band multimedia applications which exploit the QoS features of ATM networks are two important issues in the field of distributed multimedia. This pa per discusses the design and implementation of a Native-ATM based real-time mu lt imedia communication systems in heterogeneous computing environments. In this sy stem, a socket style Native-ATM API is implemented in SUN workstations. PCs and the SUN workstations transfer real-time video and audio streams based on the AT M AAL5 protocol. The experience provides a good foundation for research work on broad band distributed multimedia applications in heterogeneous computing environ ments.
