Abstract:For radiation from a diffuser illuminated by a monochromatic plane wave, we calculate the field correlation using the Rayleigh–Sommerfeld–Smythe integral formula. This provides expressions of spatial correlation function valid at any point in the hemisphere. The non-paraxial formulas for the speckle sizes are new and the other results are consistent with the well-known solutions in the literature.

Abstract:It is commonly accepted that optical sub-Rayleigh imaging has potential application in many fields. In this Letter, by confining the divergence of the optical field, as well as the size of the illumination source, we show that the first-order averaged intensity measurement via speckle laser illumination can make an actual breakthrough on the Rayleigh limit. For a high-order algorithm, it has been reported that the autocorrelation function can be utilized to achieve the sub-Rayleigh feature. However, we find that this sub-Rayleigh feature for the high-order algorithm is limited only to binary objects, and the image will be distorted when a gray object is placed. This property encourages us to find the physics behind the high-order correlation imaging algorithm. We address these explanations in this Letter and find that for different types of high-order algorithm, there is always a "seat" in the right place from the cross-correlation function.

Abstract:Laser speckles have become a fundamental component of the modern optics-research toolbox. Not only are speckle patterns the basis of numerous imaging techniques, but also, they are employed to generate optical potentials for cold atoms and colloidal particles. The ability to manipulate a speckle pattern's spatial intensity correlations, particularly long-range (non-local) ones, is essential in numerous applications. A typical fully-developed speckle pattern, however, only possesses short-ranged (local) intensity correlations which are determined by the spatial field correlations. Here we experimentally demonstrate and theoretically develop a general method for creating fully-developed speckles with strong non-local intensity correlations. The functional form of the spatial intensity correlations can be arbitrarily tailored without altering the field correlations. Our approach provides a versatile and utilitarian framework for enhancing and controlling non-local correlations in speckle patterns.

Abstract:Classical correlation of Rayleigh speckle fields E(x) can only mimic second-order correlation in quantum imaging. Here, we propose a method to explore the high-order correlation of non-Rayleigh speckle fields EN(x) which shows a totally different property from the Rayleigh speckle fields. As a specific example, we illustrate and analyze in detail the third-order speckle scanning imaging which overcomes the diffraction barrier by a factor of 3. The influences of diffractions in the illumination path and the detection path are also discussed. This investigation may pave the way for applications in super-resolution imaging.
Experimental Characterization of Correlation-Functions of Random Surfaces by Speckle Measurement and Complementary Algorithm

Abstract:A method for the extracting the correlation functions of random surfaces is proposed by using the image speckle intensity. Theoretically, we analyse the integral expression of average intensity of the image speckles, and compare it with the pair of Fourier-Bessel-transform-and-the-inversion of the exponential function of the height-height correlation function of the random surfaces. Then the algorithm is proposed numerically to complement the lacking Bessel function factor in the expression of the average speckle intensity, which changes the intensity data into the pair of the Fourier-Bessel-transform. Experimentally, we measure the average image speckle intensities versus the radius of the filtering aperture in the 4 f system and extract the height-height correlation function by using the proposed algorithm. The results of the practical measurements for three surface samples and the comparison with those by atomic force microscopy validate the feasibility of this method.

Abstract:Starting from the electromagnetic wave equations and boundary conditions and using Green's integral theorem,we implement the rigorous numerical solutions of the speckle field produced by scattering of dielectric randomsurfaces in the optical near-field. The average sizes of speckle granules are enlarged very quickly with the increaseof the distance in the range less than a wavelength. It is found that the speckle contrast in the near-field and inthe neighbourhood region is inversely proportional to the square of lateral correlation length at its large valuesand linearly decreases with the roughness exponent.

Abstract:This paper studies the correlation properties of the speckles in the deep Fresnel diffraction region produced by the scattering of rough self-affine fractal surfaces. The autocorrelation function of the speckle intensities is formulated by the combination of the light scattering theory of Kirchhoff approximation and the principles of speckle statistics. We propose a method for extracting the three surface parameters, i.e. the roughness w, the lateral correlation length xi and the roughness exponent alpha, from the autocorrelation functions of speckles. This method is verified by simulating the speckle intensities and calculating the speckle autocorrelation function. We also find the phenomenon that for rough surfaces with alpha = 1, the structure of the speckles resembles that of the surface heights, which results from the effect of the peak and the valley parts of the surface, acting as micro-lenses converging and diverging the light waves.

Abstract:The performance of digital image correlation is closely associated with the quality of speckle pattern. In this paper, the performance of digital speckle pattern is analyzed theoretically concerning four critical factors: uniqueness, accuracy, precision, and spatial resolution. Pattern uniqueness could be characterized by secondary autocorrelation peak height; based on a theoretical analysis on autocorrelation function of digital speckle pattern, analytical formulas are derived to estimate the secondary autocorrelation peak height. Measurement accuracy and precision are descriptions of systematic error and random error respectively; by deriving analytical expression for power spectrum of digital speckle pattern, theoretical models are built for analyzing both systematic errors and random errors. Spatial resolution characterizes the ability of a given technique to distinguish close features; empirical formulas are presented to describe the dependence of spatial resolution upon subset size and shape function order; besides, a rudimentary model is proposed, which provides conservative estimates for spatial resolution. Considering all these four factors, we make recommendations for selection of generation parameters of digital speckle pattern, which can eventually improve the measurement performance of digital image correlation technique.

Abstract:A rapid and accurate method of speckle correlation displacement measurement is presented based on study and analysis on speckle characteristics.A “progressive updating”method of large-scale displacement measurement is proposed to avoid the defect of low correlation coefficient caused by large-scale displacement.The experimental results prove the method is rapid and accurate for large-scale dynamic displacement measurement.

Abstract:Based on the light scattering theory of Kirchoff approximation, the correlation function of the speckle intensities relating to that of the random surfaces is quantitatively formulated in correspondence with the principles of Van Cittert-Zernike theorem. We then propose the method for the extraction of surfaces parameters from the correlation functions of speckles intensity produced by light scattering in the region near the random surfaces. The experiments of light scattering in the region near random self-affine fractal surfaces are simulated, and the 3 parameters, i.e., the roughness omega, the lateral correlation length xi and the roughness exponent alpha, are extracted by fitting the correlation function data of the speckle intensities to the formulated expression. The extracted values of the surface parameters conform well with the set values.

Abstract:We employ spatial averaging to directly evaluate the modulus of two-dimensional spatial coherence of partially coherent field using speckle patterns. This approach offers several advantages over the temporal averaging method, including reduced workload for recording speckle patterns, enhanced precision and briefness in calculation, and improved resilience against the disturbance of background noise. We develop a comprehensive theoretical analysis to support our proposed method, which is then validated by simulation results and experimental tests involving partially coherent sources. The excellent agreement between theoretical and experimental results confirms the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed technique.

Abstract:On the basis of a Rayleigh scattering model for a single nanoparticle illuminated by a TEM00 laser beam, we theoretically and numerically study the speckle formation when nanofluids are illuminated by a TEM00 laser beam. The results show that the laser speckles possess a Gaussian distribution, which are in agreement with the experimental results. The results may be useful for using a laser speckle velocimetry to determine the velocitiies of nanoparticles in nanofluids.

Abstract:In a lens-assisted imaging scheme with speckle illumination, the spatial resolution can surpass the Rayleigh resolution limit by a factor of $\sqrt{2}$ with second-order auto-correlation of light intensity. In this work, integrated with the nonlinear structured illumination after the speckle sinusoidally modulated, the second-order auto-correlation imaging can surpass the Rayleigh resolution limit by a factor of $2+\sqrt{2}$. In theory, a higher spatial resolution with the surpassing factor $N+\sqrt{N}$ is available by the $N$-order auto-correlation measurement. Our imaging scheme combined two super-resolution technologies not only enhances the spatial resolution of the lens-assisted imaging, but also promotes the practicality of the intensity correlation imaging.

Abstract:The laser speckle correlation method has found widespread application for obtaining information from vibrating objects. However, the resolution and accuracy of the laser speckle correlation method as they relate to the defocusing degree have not been analyzed sufficiently. Furthermore, the possible methods for speckle pattern quality assessment and enhancement have not been studied. In this study, the resolution and accuracy of the laser speckle correlation method are analyzed, and it is found that they are affected by the defocusing degree and speckle pattern quality, respectively. A new speckle pattern quality criterion combining the mean intensity gradient and frequency spectrum was proposed, called CMZ. The quality of the speckle pattern is higher when the CMZ is closer to zero. The proposed criterion was verified by simulated speckle patterns and real speckle patterns with different speckle sizes, densities, and gray contrasts. In the experimental setup stage, a suitable defocusing degree can be selected based on the resolution requirement and optimal speckle size, and other experimental parameters can be determined according to the CMZ criterion. Rotation and vibration experiments verified the effectiveness of the laser speckle correlation method and confirmed the reliability of the experiment preparation based on proposed CMZ criterion.

Abstract:A general expression is derived and discussed for the interlook cross-correlation function (CCF) of speckle patterns in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) multilook images of dynamic ocean surfaces processed with partially overlapped sub-reference signals at arbitrary Doppler center times. Provided that the backscattered field is statistically "white", the CCF of the speckle intensity is given by the squared modulus of the autocorrelation function of the amplitude weighting functions of sub-reference signal where the time lag is the center time difference. For such Gaussian speckle patterns, the CCF of the interlook speckle patterns is independent of the surface coherence time of randomly moving dynamic sea surfaces. From the integral equation, an analytic expression is derived for a rectangular sub-reference weighting. Comparisons of the theoretical CCFs with those estimated from the RADARSAT-1 Ghand and JERS-1 L-band images of the coastal waters of Japan show good agreement.
Laws of laser speckle movement and their application in flow visualization

Abstract:In this paper a mathematical model for a laws of laser speckle movement in space when light beams pass through a phase object (e.g. a transparent flow fluid) is proposed by using the Fresnel-Kirchhoff diffraction integral. By means of the theoretical analysis for this mathematical model, the following three conclusions can be got. First, when a light beam passes through a phase object, for example a transparent flow fluid, the movement state of speckles in space depends not only on the characteristic function on surface of speckle sources, but also on infinitely small variation of propagation direction of incident beam. If the characteristic function can be kept same during a double exposure, then the movement states of speckle in space and their corresponding speckle displacements depend only on the variation of propagation direction of incident beam. Second, to make the characteristic function same during a double exposure the considered light beams which produce a pair of correlation speckles must come from the same space zone on the surface of speckle source. Third, when a light beam passes through a diffusion surface, the variation of propagation direction of the beam can not be determined by the principle of geometrical optics because of scatting function of light beams on diffusion surface. But the principle of geometrical optics still can be used in discussion of the movement states of speckle in space and in determination of speckle displacements according to the mathematical model proposed in this paper. Above these analysis provids a theoretical basis for designing experimental arrangements of laser speckle photography in flow visualization. According to the laws of laser speckle movement in space six different experimental arrangements which can be used in flow visualization are presented. The formulas of processing the experimental data for measurement density field and temperature field in flow fluid are given. These results are very favorable for development of laser speckle photography technology in flow visualization.

Abstract:We discuss the far-field spatio-temporal cross-correlations of waves multiple-scattered in a turbid medium in which is embedded a hidden heterogeneous region (inclusion) characterized by a distinct scatterer dynamics (as compared to the rest of the medium). We show that the spatio-temporal correlation is affected by the inclusion which suggests a new method of imaging in turbid media. Our results allow qualitative interpretation in terms of diffraction theory: the cross-correlation of scattered waves behaves similarly to the intensity of a wave diffracted by an aperture.
