Abstract:In this paper we derive the time-space correlation funotion of dynamic speckles produced by double light beams. An experiment using photon correlation method is performed, the result accords well with the expectation of the present theory.

Abstract:Optical vortices have developed rapidly in recent times owing to their theoretical significance and attractive potential applications in extensive realms. Composite optical vortices using two or more coherently superimposed vortex beams have been widely researched. Here, we propose a novel beam pattern incoherently generated by laser beams with two distinct wavelengths. We apply this beam pattern in fluorescence super-resolution imaging based on the stimulated emission effect, and find that the size of the resulting dark spot in the focal plane lies below the diffraction limit. Crucial factors affecting the sub-diffraction dark spot, such as beam intensities, spatial displacement, pulse width, polarization, and aberration, are studied in detail. We believe that the results are beneficial for experimental studies and will serve as useful references in other circumstances where they may be utilized.

Abstract:Dynamic light scattering studies of dense colloidal systems require special care due to problems of non-ergodicity and multiple scattering. We have combined a number of novel scattering techniques and developed a multi-speckle cross-correlation spectroscopy using a CCD chip as the detector. Cross correlation of pixels separated by a single scattering speckle length eliminates multiple scattering while averaging correlation functions from many speckles with approximately the same scattering wavevector performs the ensemble average. We use this technique to measure the phonons of a single hard sphere RHCP colloidal crystal which exhibits a well defined dispersion despite the complete anharmonicity of the interparticle potential. Abstract:On the basis of a Rayleigh scattering model for a single nanoparticle illuminated by a TEM00 laser beam, we theoretically and numerically study the speckle formation when nanofluids are illuminated by a TEM00 laser beam. The results show that the laser speckles possess a Gaussian distribution, which are in agreement with the experimental results. The results may be useful for using a laser speckle velocimetry to determine the velocitiies of nanoparticles in nanofluids.

Abstract:A rapid and accurate method of speckle correlation displacement measurement is presented based on study and analysis on speckle characteristics.A “progressive updating”method of large-scale displacement measurement is proposed to avoid the defect of low correlation coefficient caused by large-scale displacement.The experimental results prove the method is rapid and accurate for large-scale dynamic displacement measurement.

Abstract:We have studied the properties of the dynamic partially coherent speckles in the Fresnel and Fraunhofer diffraction regions. We use the theory of propagation of the mutual intensity in partially coherent light, and derive the general form of the spatio-temporal cross-correlation functions of the dynamic speckle intensities produced by a moving diffusing object. Based on these theoretical expressions, the characteristics of the movement and the boiling of the dynamic partially coherent speckles are discussed. By choosing the proper extended incoherent light source and by adjusting the parameters of the optical setup, we have observed experimentally the partially coherent speckle in the Fresnel and Fraunhofer diffraction regions. Then we study qualitatively the movement and the boiling of the speckles. Using techniques of photon counting and automatic data acquisition, we have measured the temporal evolution of the speckle intensity in the Fraunhofer plane as the object moves, and thus measured the cross-correlation of the speckles versus the temporal increment. The experimental data are in agreement with the theoretical results.

Abstract:Laser speckles are coherence stacks randomly formed in space when a laser beam shines on a rough surface of an object.The laser speckles move synchronistically as the object moves in its plane,this phenomenon can be used to measure the micro-displacement of an object.In this paper,He-Ne laser,as optical source,is combined with CCD imaging device to collect speckle images.The images are then processed with computer program to verify the theory of speckles displacement.Some problems to be cared in teaching have been pointed out.

Abstract:Laser speckles have become a fundamental component of the modern optics-research toolbox. Not only are speckle patterns the basis of numerous imaging techniques, but also, they are employed to generate optical potentials for cold atoms and colloidal particles. The ability to manipulate a speckle pattern's spatial intensity correlations, particularly long-range (non-local) ones, is essential in numerous applications. A typical fully-developed speckle pattern, however, only possesses short-ranged (local) intensity correlations which are determined by the spatial field correlations. Here we experimentally demonstrate and theoretically develop a general method for creating fully-developed speckles with strong non-local intensity correlations. The functional form of the spatial intensity correlations can be arbitrarily tailored without altering the field correlations. Our approach provides a versatile and utilitarian framework for enhancing and controlling non-local correlations in speckle patterns.

Abstract:Laser display technology is the most promising display technology in the market and is widely used in many fields. However, laser speckle has been troubling the application and expansion of this technology in some fields. In order to better evaluate the speckle, speckle measurement methods must be studied. In this study, a dynamic measurement method for laser speckles is proposed according to the optical superposition characteristics of speckle, which can reduce the influence of non-coherent factors on the speckle measurement results. The feasibility of the dynamic speckle measurement method is verified by designing an experimental scheme.

Abstract:Properties of movement and the boiling of dynamic partially coherent speckles are investigated. Theoretical analysis of the correlation functions shows that in front of and behind the Rraunhofer plane, the directions of the movement of the dynamics partially coherent speckles are the same and opposite to that of the object, respectively. The boiling occurs according to a parabolic factor with respect to time separation tau. These properties are observed experimentally by using an elaborately chosen extended source to meet the requirement of intensity and coherence. The boiling of the speckles is measured with the photon counting system, which is refitted for the automatic data acquisition, and the experimental results are confirmed by the theory.

Time-drift Effect of Laser Speckle

Abstract:The time-drift effect of laser speckle was reported. A speckle model was introduced. The validity was verified by the statistical properties of intensity and argument of the complex amplitude at the observation plane. Based on this speckle model and correlation method between speckle patterns, nearly all physical factors which may result in the time-drift effect of speckle according to experimental parameters were simulated.The results show that two factors,which vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser(VCSEL) and charge coupled device(CCD),Other factors such as fluctuation of laser intensity, changes of wavelength of light and air refractive index, etc., only bring tiny changes of speckle pattern, or even do not cause the time-drift effect of laser speckle at all.

Abstract:Random light fields -- commonly known as speckles -- demonstrate Rayleigh intensity statistics and only possess local correlations: which occur within the individual speckle grains. In this work, we develop an experimental method for customizing the intensity probability density function (PDF) of speckle patterns while simultaneously introducing non-local spatial correlations among the speckle grains. The various families of tailored speckle patterns -- created by our method -- can exhibit radically different topologies, statistics, and variable degrees of spatial order. Irrespective of their distinct statistical properties, however, all of these speckles are created by appropriately encoding high-order correlations into the phase front of a monochromatic laser beam with a spatial light modulator. In addition to our experimental demonstration, we explore both the theoretical and practical limitations on the extent to which the intensity PDF and the spatial intensity correlations can be manipulated concurrently in a speckle pattern. This work provides a versatile methodology for creating complex light fields and controlling their statistical properties with varied applications in microscopy, imaging, and optical manipulation.

Abstract:We present a numerical model for image speckle in scanned-laser displays. The scanning process itself reduces speckle contrast to 0.85 compared to 1.0 for a stationary laser. Reducing screen correlation length to 10 mu m from 30 mu m reduces speckle contrast from 0.85 to 0.41.

Abstract:AbstractHigh-precision measurements implemented with light are desired in all fields of science. However, light acts as a wave and the Rayleigh criterion in classical optics yields a diffraction limit that prevents obtaining a resolution smaller than the wavelength. Sub-wavelength interference has potential application in lithography because it beats the classical Rayleigh resolution limit. Here, we carefully study second-order correlation theory to establish the physics behind sub-wavelength interference in photon coincidence detection. A Young's double slit experiment with pseudo-thermal light is performed to test the second-order correlation pattern. The results show that when two point detectors are scanned in different ways, super sub-wavelength interference patterns can be obtained. We then provide a theoretical explanation for this surprising result and demonstrate that this explanation is also suitable for the results found for entangled light. Furthermore, we discuss the limitations of these types of super sub-wavelength interference patterns in quantum lithography.

Abstract:The power spectrum of the time-varying intensity in the dynamic laser speckle patterns is determined by passing the shifted power spectrum through a low-pass filter which is implemented via the signal integration. The light intensity is modulated sinusoidally to induce the stroboscopic effect which shifts the resonant frequency component of the spectrum to 0 Hz. The homodyne dynamic laser speckles generated by the quasi-inelastic scattering of the Brownian motions in colloidal suspensions are investigated. Within the frequency range from 10 Hz to 10 kHz used in this work, the bandwidth of the Lorenztian power spectrums is shown to be inversely proportional to the particle size, which is in agreement with the prediction of the dynamic light scattering theory of diffusing particle. The spatial variation observed in the full-field power spectrum maps is caused by the nonuniform distribution of average speckle intensity and varies with the modulation frequency. However, the bandwidths measured at different locations are found to be intensity independent.

Abstract:It is commonly accepted that optical sub-Rayleigh imaging has potential application in many fields. In this Letter, by confining the divergence of the optical field, as well as the size of the illumination source, we show that the first-order averaged intensity measurement via speckle laser illumination can make an actual breakthrough on the Rayleigh limit. For a high-order algorithm, it has been reported that the autocorrelation function can be utilized to achieve the sub-Rayleigh feature. However, we find that this sub-Rayleigh feature for the high-order algorithm is limited only to binary objects, and the image will be distorted when a gray object is placed. This property encourages us to find the physics behind the high-order correlation imaging algorithm. We address these explanations in this Letter and find that for different types of high-order algorithm, there is always a "seat" in the right place from the cross-correlation function.
Speckle-based determination of the polarisation state of single and multiple laser beams

Abstract:Laser speckle is generated by the multiple interference of light through a disordered medium. Here we study the premise that the speckle pattern retains information about the polarisation state of the incident field. We analytically verify that a linear relation exists between the Stokes vector of the light and the resulting speckle pattern. As a result, the polarisation state of a beam can be measured from the speckle pattern using a transmission matrix approach. We perform a quantitative analysis of the accuracy of the transmission matrix method to measure randomly time-varying polarisation states. In experiment, we find that the Stokes parameters of light from a diode laser can be retrieved with an uncertainty of 0.05 using speckle images of 150$\times$150 pixels and 17 training states. We show both analytically and in experiment that this approach may be extended to the case of more than one laser field, demonstrating the measurement of the Stokes parameters of two laser beams simultaneously from a single speckle pattern and achieving the same uncertainty of 0.05.

Abstract:We present the general coherence theory for laser beams passing through a moving diffuser. The temporal coherence of laser beams passing through a moving diffuser depends on two characteristic temporal scales: the laser coherence time and the mean time it takes the diffuser to move past a phase correlation area. In most applications, the former is much shorter than the latter. Our theoretical analysis shows the spatial coherence area of light scattered from a moving diffuser decreases while the coherence time remains unchanged. The conclusion has been confirmed by experiments using a Michelson interferometer and it is not in accordance with the original coherence theory in which both the temporal and spatial coherence of light scattered by a moving diffuser decrease. We also developed a method based on the theory of eigenvalues to calculate the speckle contrast on a screen illuminated by light transmitted through a moving diffuser.
