Abstract:Lead-free (Na0.52K0.48−x)(Nb0.92−xSb0.08)O3–xLiTaO3 ceramics with excellent dielectric and piezoelectric properties have been fabricated by ordinary sintering and their phase transition behavior, various electrical properties and temperature characteristics were investigated. The composition near x=0.0375 exhibits a morphotropic phase boundary like behavior, and thus owns optimum electrical properties of d33=395pC/N, kp=52%, ε33T=2390, Qm=40, Np=3040Hzm and Tc=251°C. However, a strong temperature sensitivity in these compositions was observed as a result of the change of spontaneous polarization vectors or domain states, depending on the location of PPT. Compositions close to the tetragonal side exhibit much less temperature dependence, suggesting processing solutions to these obstacles.

Abstract:The intrinsic correlation and mechanism between electrical properties and phase transitions in alkaline niobate based lead-free piezoelectric ceramics were explored by taking typical (Na 0.52 K 0.48− x )(Nb 0.95− x Ta 0.05 )O 3 -xLiSbO 3 compositions as a case study. The diffuseness of the phase transition leads to two-phase coexistence promoting piezoelectric activity and simultaneously induces remarkable temperature sensitivity, based on the variation of orthorhombic and tetragonal domains. The polymorphism, not a morphotropism of the phase boundary was considered as a structural root for these kinds of compositions. The refinement of compositions within two-phase coexistence zone compromises two opposite effects, although the composition range is narrow, suggesting the property sensitivity to the composition and a processing solution to the property optimization as well.

Abstract:To achieve high piezoelectric activity and a wide sintering temperature range, the ceramic system concerning (1 - x)(K0.48Na0.52)(Nb0.96Sb0.04)O-3-x[Bi-0.5(Na0.7Ag0.3)(0.5)](0.90) Zn0.10ZrO3 was designed, and the rhombohedral-tetragonal (R-T) phase boundary can drive a high d(33). Phase transition characteristics as well as their effects on the electrical properties were investigated systematically. The R-T coexistence phase boundary (0.04 <= x <= 0.05) can be driven via modification with BNAZZ, and has been confirmed by XRD and temperature-dependent dielectric constants as well as Raman analysis, and the ceramics possess enhanced piezoelectric properties (d(33) similar to 425 pC N-1 and k(p) similar to 0.43) and a high unipolar strain (similar to 0.3%). In addition, a wide sintering temperature range of 1050-1080 degrees C can warrant a large d(33) of 400-430 pC N-1, which can benefit practical applications. As a result, the addition of BNAZZ is an effective method to improve the electrical properties (piezoelectricity and strain) and sintering behavior of potassium-sodium niobate ceramics.

Abstract:(1−x)(Na0.5K0.5)NbO3–(Bi0.5K0.5)TiO3 solid solution ceramics were successfully fabricated, exhibiting a continuous phase transition with changing x at room temperature from orthorhombic, to tetragonal, to cubic, and finally to tetragonal symmetries. A morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) between orthorhombic and tetragonal ferroelectric phases was found at 2–3 mol% (Bi0.5K0.5)TiO3 (BKT), which brings about enhanced piezoelectric and electromechanical properties of piezoelectric constant d33=192 pC/N and planar electromechanical coupling coefficient kp=45%. The MPB composition has a Curie temperature of 370°–380°C, comparable with that of the widely used PZT materials. These results demonstrate that this system is a promising lead‐free piezoelectric candidate material.

Abstract:Lead free (1−x)(Na0.5K0.5)NbO3–xBiAlO3 (NKN–BA) piezoelectric ceramics have been prepared by a solid-state reaction method. The phase transitional behavior and various electrical properties were investigated. A pure perovskite structure can be achieved when the content of BA is less than 5%. A morphotropic phase boundary between orthorhombic and tetragonal ferroelectric phases has been identified in the composition range of 0.005≤x≤0.01. The enhanced ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of a piezoelectric constant d33 of 202 pC/N, a planar electromechanical coefficient kp of 46%, a remanent polarization Pr of 23.6μC/cm2 and a Curie temperature of 372°C appear in the composition with x=0.01. These results indicate that the materials studied have potential as a candidate of lead free piezoelectric ceramics.
Enhancing Temperature Stability in Potassium-Sodium Niobate Ceramics Through Phase Boundary and Composition Design

Abstract:Phase boundaries and composition design were explored to achieve both high piezoelectricity and favorable temperature stability in potassium-sodium niobate ceramics, using (1-x)(K,Na)(Nb,Sb)O-3-xBi(Na,K)(Zr,Sn,Hf)O-3 ceramics. A rhombohedral-tetragonal (R-T) phase boundary was constructed at x =0.035-0.04 by co-doping with Sb5+ and Bi(Na,K)(Zr,Sn,Hf)O-3. More importantly, a superior temperature stability was observed in the ceramics with x = 0.035, accompanying with a stable unipolar strain at room temperature to 100 degrees C. The ceramics with x = 0.035 also exhibited improved piezoelectric properties (e.g., piezoelectric coefficient d(33) similar to 465 pC/N and electromechanical coupling factor k(p) = 0.47) and Curie temperature (T-c similar to 240 degrees C). The Rietveld refinement and in-situ temperature-dependent piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) results indicated that the enhancement of the piezoelectric properties was caused by the easy domain switching, high tetragonal fraction, and tetragonality, while the improved temperature stability mainly originated from the stable domain structures.

Abstract:(1-x)(Li0.02Na0.48K0.48Ag0.02)(Nb0.95Sb0.05)O-3-x(Ba0.4Bi0.3Na0.3)ZrO3 (LNKANbS-xBBiNZ, x = 0.04, 0.045, 0.05, 0.055 and 0.06) lead-free piezoelectric ceramics were prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction method via the two-step sintering route. The effects of the content of BBiNZ on electrical properties and microstructural morphology of the LNKANbS-xBBiNZ ceramics were studied systematically. The designing of forming rhombohedral-tetragonal phase boundary in the LNKANbS-xBBiNZ system is confirmed by XRD Rietveld refinement and Raman spectroscopy, whose phase proportion is affected greatly by the BBiNZ amount. The LNKANbS-xBBiNZ ceramics exhibit complicated dielectric behavior, whose dielectric response characteristic can be fitted by the quadratic law and the Curie-Weiss law, and both having some deviation. The high-temperature conductivity of the LNKANbS-0.045BBiNZ ceramics is controlled by oxygen vacancies detected by both conductive activation energy and relaxation activation energy fitting. The LNKANbS-0.045BBiNZ ceramics exhibit excellent electrical properties, correlating with appropriate R-T phase composition proportion and improved densification and microstructural homogeneity obtained by adjusting the BBiNZ content and using the two-step sintering method.

Abstract:In order to identify the contribution of the dopants to enhanced properties of KNN-based ceramics, (1−x)(K0.48Na0.52)(Nb0.96Sb0.04)O3–xBa0.6Ca0.4ZrO3 [(1−x)KNNS–xBCZ] lead-free piezoceramics were prepared by the conventional sintering method, and effects of BCZ on phase transition and polar characteristics of the ceramics are investigated. The results of XRD analysis and lattice parameters indicate the introduction of BCZ leads to compositional-dependent polymorphic phase transition (PPT) between R and O phase and no T phase is involved. Besides, (1−x)KNNS–xBCZ possess enhanced piezoelectric properties compared with pure KNN, i.e., d33=214pC/N. The probable mechanism is addressed here in the view of molecular field, and combining with our previous work, an alternative approach for targeted option of the dopants so as to dramatically improve piezoelectric properties of KNN-based ceramics is given, and namely, PPT involving R and T phase resulting from lattice deformation and the impurities in A site with higher internal electric field should be taken into consideration.

Abstract:New (1–x)K0.48Na0.52NbO3–xBi(Zn0.5Zr0.5)O3 [(1–x)KNN–xBZZ] lead-free piezoceramics were prepared by the conventional solid state method. Effects of BZZ content on their phase structure, microstructure, and electrical properties were studied. As the BZZ content increases, both TO–T and TC gradually decrease, the dielectric constant increases and the dielectric loss almost decreases. The ceramic with x = 0.0075 has enhanced ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties (e.g., d33 ∼ 156 pC/N, kp ∼ 0.44, Pr ∼ 27.5 μC/cm2, and Ec ∼ 11.2 kV/cm). The underlying physical mechanism for enhanced electrical properties has been given. As a result, adding BZZ is an effective way to enhance the piezoelectric properties of KNN ceramics.
High And Temperature-Insensitive Piezoelectric Strain In Alkali Niobate Lead-Free Perovskite

Abstract:With growing concern over world environmental problems and increasing legislative restriction on using lead and lead containing materials, a feasible replacement for lead-based piezoceramics is desperately needed. Herein, we report a large piezoelectric strain (d(33)(*)) of 470 pm/V and a high Curie temperature (T-c) of 243 degrees C in (Na0.5K0.3)NbO3-(Bi0.5Li0.5)TiO3-BaZrO3 lead-free ceramics by doping MnO2. Moreover, excellent temperature stability is also observed from room temperature to 170 degrees C (430 pm/V at 100 degrees C and 370 pm/V at 170 degrees C). Thermally stimulated depolarization currents (TSDC) analysis reveals the reduced defects and improved ferroelectricity in MnO2-doped piezoceramics from a macroscopic view. Local poling experiments and local switching spectroscopy piezoresponse force microscopy (SS-PFM) demonstrates the enhanced ferroelectricity and domain mobility from a microscopic view. Distinct grain growth and improvement in phase angle may also account for the enhancement of piezoelectric properties.

Abstract:Lead-free (Na0.52K0.48-x)(Nb0.96-xSb0.04)O-3-xLiTaO(3) ceramics (x=0.0375-0.0575) have been manufactured by a conventional solid-state method. All compositions form solid solutions with a pure perovskite structure. A morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) between orthorhombic (x <= 0.04) and tetragonal (x >= 0.045) ferroelectric phases was identified in the composition range of the 0.04 < x < 0.045. The composition near the MPB (x=0.0425) exhibits the best electrical properties with a dielectric constant of 1644, a piezoelectric constant of 310 pC/N, a planar-mode electromechanical coupling factor of 0.48, and a Curie temperature of 340 degrees C. The results indicate that the materials studied could be a promising lead-free piezoelectric candidate for device applications.

Abstract:(1−x)Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3–x(Na0.53K0.44Li0.04)(Nb0.88Sb0.08Ta0.04)O3 (BNT–xNKLNST) with x=0–0.10 lead-free piezoelectric ceramics were prepared by a solid state method, and the structure and electrical properties were investigated in this study. It is found that a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) of rhombohedral (R) and tetragonal (T) phase exists in the range of 0.03≤x≤0.05 and the structure changes to paraelectric phase when x>0.07. The samples with x=0.05 exhibit improved electrical properties owing to the formation of MPB, which are as follows: piezoelectric constant d33=120pC/N, remnant polarization Pr=39.4μC/cm2 and coercive field Ec=3.6kV/mm. These results indicate that the enhanced piezoelectric properties for BNT can be achieved by forming the coexistence of R and T phase.
Composition-driven Phase Transition and Structural Origin of High Piezoresponse in KNN-based Ceramics

Abstract:The piezoelectric and electromechanical coupling coefficients in conjunction with their temperature stability are the crucial figure-of-merits of piezoelectric materials, due to these properties determine their response sensitivity and operating temperature range, respectively for practical applications. In this work, Sb, (Bi0.5Na0.5)ZrO3, and (Bi0.5K0.5)HfO3 were used to regulate phase transition of KNN-based ceramics, and resultant large piezoelectric constants d33 ∼ 430 ± 10 pC/N, unipolar strain Suni ∼ 0.18% at 40 kV/cm, and a high planar electromechanical coupling factor kp ∼ 55% were observed in the composition with rhombohedral-orthorhombic-tetragonal (R-O-T) multiphase coexistence. Ex-situ electric field XRD measurement and TEM observation indicate the outstanding piezoelectric properties are originated from the electric field-induced phase transition, nanodomains and polar nanoregions, which lower polarization anisotropy and facilitate polarization rotation between different crystallographic symmetries. In addition, the piezoelectric properties of the samples with R-O-T phases coexistence show superior temperature stability and fatigue resistance after 106 bipolar electric cycles. The present study not only helps to understand the structural origin of high piezoresponse, but also lays a foundation for the applications of KNN-based ceramics.
Phase‐Composition‐Dependent Piezoelectric and Electromechanical Strain Properties in (bi1/2na1/2)tio3–ba(ni1/2nb1/2)o3 Lead‐Free Ceramics

Abstract:New lead‐free perovskite solid solution ceramics of (1 − x)(Bi1/2Na1/2)TiO3–xBa(Ni1/2Nb1/2)O3[(1−x)BNT–xBNN,x = 0.02–0.06) were prepared and their dielectric, ferroelectric, piezoelectric, and electromechanical properties were investigated as a function of the BNN content. The X‐ray diffraction results indicated that the addition of BNN has induced a morphotropic phase transformation from rhombohedral to pseudocubic symmetry approximately at x = 0.045, accompanying an evolution of dielectric relaxor behavior as characterized by enhanced dielectric diffuseness and frequency dispersion. In the proximity of the ferroelectric rhombohedral and pseudocubic phase coexistence zone, the x = 0.045 ceramics exhibited optimal piezoelectric and electromechanical coupling properties of d33~121 pC/N and kp~0.27 owing to decreased energy barriers for polarization switching. However, further addition of BNN could cause a decrease in freezing temperatures of polar nanoregions till the coexistence of nonergodic and ergodic relaxor phases occurred near room temperature, especially for the x = 0.05 sample which has negligible negative strains and thus show the maximum electrostrain of 0.3% under an external electric field of 7 kV/mm, but almost vanished piezoelectric properties. This was attributed to the fact that the induced long‐range ferroelectric order could reversibly switch back to its original ergodic state upon removal of external electric fields.
Niobate-based lead-free piezoceramics: a diffused phase transition boundary leading to temperature-insensitive high piezoelectric voltage coefficients

Abstract:One of the key remaining challenges for the most promising Pb-free (K, Na) NbO3 (KNN) piezoelectrics is how to improve the temperature stability of piezoelectric voltage coefficients, which is vital to promoting their practical applications. This study proposes an effective approach to develop highly piezoelectric KNN-based ceramics with temperature-insensitive piezoelectric voltage coefficients (d(33)), which is also called direct piezo-coefficient, by broadening the boundaries from tetragonal to orthorhombic and then to rhombohedral phases. The Li-doped KNN ceramics modified with BaZrO3 and (Bi, Zr)TiO3 exhibit a high d(33) up to 330 pC N-1, whose variation is limited to +/- 10% in a common application temperature range (25-100 degrees C), when their composition is optimized for strengthening their temperature stability. A high d(33) up to 380 pC N-1 with a larger variation (<20%) but in a wider temperature range (25-200 degrees C) was also available in the present materials possessing a large planar electromechanical coupling coefficient k(p) up to 0.54 and a high Curie temperature of 4260 degrees C as well as high strength associated with high relative density. Piezoelectric force microscopy (PFM) studies reveal that the good piezoelectric response could be related to the easier domain reorientation and domain wall motion. The present results validated that our approach based on phase transition boundary engineering should be an effective strategy for further development of high-performance lead-free piezoceramics towards the demand for industrial applications.
The phase structure and electric properties of low-temperature sintered (K, Na)NbO3-based piezoceramics modified by CuO

Abstract:0.25wt% CuO-doped (Li,K,Na)(Nb,Ta)O3–AgSbO3 lead-free piezoceramics with pure perovskite structure were successfully prepared at a sintering temperature below 1000°C. The sintering temperature of KNN-based piezoceramics was effectively reduced by about 100°C due to the enhanced densification process induced by the addition of CuO. Besides, the acceptable sintering temperature window was broadened by the addition of CuO. It is found that the CuO-doped samples show slightly higher tetragonal–orthorhombic phase transition point (TT−O) but a lower Curie point (Tc), compared to undoped ones. The KNN-based piezoceramics became “hard” as CuO was added, supported by an increase of Qm. Fairly good electrical properties of d33*=383pm/V, εr=860, Qm=188 and Tc=215°C could be obtained in dense CuO-modified KNN-based piezoceramics sintered at 970°C, demonstrating promising potential in practical applications.

Abstract:For fabricating (K, Na)NbO3-based ceramic, the improved piezoelectric properties can be obtained through phase boundary design. Herein, the (1 − x)K0.48Na0.52Nb0.96Sb0.04O3–x(Bi0.5Li0.45Ag0.05)(Zr0.98Hf0.02)O3 lead-free ceramics with rhombohedral-tetragonal (R-T) phase boundary was designed and developed by the conventional pressureless sintering. The relationship between phase structure, surface morphology and electrical properties was systematically investigated. According to phase diagram from XRD and dielectric-temperature measurements, the ceramics exhibit the R-T phase coexistence in the range of 0.035 ≤ x ≤ 0.05. As a result, the optimal comprehensive properties (d33 ~ 343 pC/N, d33* ~ 410 pm/V, TC ~ 270 °C) were achieved in the ceramic with x = 0.035, due to the coexistence of R-T phase caused free energy flatten and energy barrier reduce. These results indicate that the construction of R-T phase coexistence is an effective strategy to improve the electrical properties of KNN-based ceramics.

Abstract:The contradiction between high piezoelectricity and uniquely poor temperature stability generated by polymorphic phase boundary is a huge obstacle to high-performance (K, Na)NbO3 -based ceramics entering the application market as Pb-based substitutes. We possess the phase boundary by mimicking Pb(Zr, Ti)O3's morphotropic phase boundary structure via the synergistic optimization of diffusion phase boundary and crystal orientation in 0.94(Na0.56K0.44)NbO3-0.03Bi0.5Na0.5ZrO3-0.03(Bi0.5K0.5)HfO3 textured ceramics. As a result, a prominent comprehensive performance is obtained, including giant d33 of 550 ± 30 pC/N and ultrahigh temperature stability (d33 change rate less than 1.2% within 25-150 °C), representing a significant breakthrough in lead-free piezoceramics, even surpassing the Pb-based piezoelectric ceramics. Within the same temperature range, the d33 change rate of the commercial Pb(Zr, Ti)O3-5 ceramics is only about 10%, and more importantly, its d33 (~ 350 pC/N) is much lower than that of the (K, Na)NbO3-based ceramics in this work. This study demonstrates a strategy for constructing the phase boundary with MPB feature, settling the problem of temperature instability in (K, Na)NbO3-based ceramics.

Abstract:Lead-free 0.94Bi(0.5)Na(0.5)TiO(3)-(0.06-x)BaTiO3-xK(0.5)Na(0.5)NbO(3) (x=0-0.06) ceramics were prepared. All these compositions have a structure close to the rhombohedral-tetragonal morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) and good electric properties at room temperature. No significant composition dependence of ferroelectric property can be established, whereas a dependence of piezoelectric properties can be observed, e.g. the piezoelectric coefficient (d(33)), planar coupling factor (k(p)), and field-induced strain (S) increase with increasing x when x < 0.01 and then tend to decrease. The highest d(33), k(p), and bipolar strain are 118 pC/N, 0.29, and 0.32%, respectively, in the composition with x=0.01. The results not only indicate that BNT-BT-KNN lead-free piezoceramics can persist in the structure close to MPB in a wide composition range but that they may also be helpful for further investigation on lead-free piezoceramics.

Abstract:Lead-based piezoelectric materials are currently facing global restrictions due to their lead toxicity. Thus it is urgent to develop lead-free substitutes with high piezoelectricity and temperature stability, among which, potassium-sodium niobate [(K, Na) NbO3, KNN] has the most potential. It is very difficult to simultaneously achieve high piezoelectric performance and reliable stability in KNN-based systems. In particular, the structural/physical origin for their high piezoelectricity is still unclear, which hinders property optimization. Here we report the achievement of high temperature stability (less than 10% variation for electric field-induced strain from 27 8C to808 degrees C), good fatigue properties (stable up to 106 cycles) as well as an enhanced piezoelectric coefficient (d(33)) of 525 pC N-1 in (1 -x)(K1-yNay)(Nb1-zSbz) O-3-xBi(0.5)(Na1-wKw) 0.5HfO3 (KNNS-BNKH) ceramics through manipulating the rhombohedral-tetragonal (R-T) phase boundary. The structural origin of their high piezoelectric performance can be attributed to a hierarchical nanodomain architecture, where the local structure inside nanodomains comprises R and T nanotwins. The physical origin can be attributed to low domain wall energy and nearly vanishing polarization anisotropy, facilitating easy polarization rotation among different states. We believe that the new breakthrough will open a window for the practical applications of KNN-based ceramics.
