Abstract:We discovered a new metallic compound of FeSn5 could lead to the highest energy capacity to date for lithium ion batteries using tincompound anodes. The monodisperse nanospheres of intermetallic FeSn5 phase were synthesized via a nanocrystal-conversion protocol, using pre-formed Sn nanospheres as templates (Figure 1). These nanospheres have tetragonal phase in P4/mcc space group, along with the defect structure Fe0.74Sn5, whose 929 mAh g theoretical capacity is the highest to date for the reported M (electrochemically inactive)-Sn intermetallic anodes. The cell performance of Fe0.74Sn5 nanospheres as an anode in Li-ion batteries has been studied. The measured capacity of Fe0.74Sn5 is around 750 mAh g (Figure 2).
