Abstract:Relativistic quantum chemistry has evolved into a fertile and large field and is now becoming an integrated part of mainstream chemistry. Yet, given the much-involved physics and mathematics (as compared with nonrelativistic quantum chemistry), it is still necessary to clean up the essentials underlying the relativistic electronic structure theories and methodologies (such that uninitiated readers can pick up quickly the right ideas and tools for further development or application) and meanwhile pinpoint future directions of the field. To this end, the three aspects of electronic structure calculations, i.e., relativity, correlation, and QED, will be highlighted.

Abstract:Quantization of the electromagnetic field (called quantum electromagnetics here) has been a fascinating and important subject since its introduction by Dirac in 1927. However, this knowledge is often inaccessible to technologists such as engineers. This subject will be discussed in its simplest terms so that it can be easily understood by a larger community of researchers. To this end, a new way of motivating Hamiltonian mechanics is presented. Furthermore, a novel way of deriving the quantum equations of motion for electromagnetics and Maxwell's equations is presented.

Abstract:This article is the second in a series of two presenting the Scale Relativistic approach to non-differentiability in mechanics and its relation to quantum mechanics. Here, we show Schroedinger's equation to be a reformulation of Newton's fundamental relation of dynamics as generalized to non-differentiable geometries in the first paper \cite{paper1}. It motivates an alternative interpretation of the other axioms of standard quantum mechanics in a coherent picture. This exercise validates the Scale Relativistic approach and, at the same time, it allows to identify macroscopic chaotic systems considered at time scales exceeding their horizon of predictability as candidates in which to search for quantum-like structuring or behavior.

Abstract:Relational formulation of quantum mechanics is based on the idea that relational properties among quantum systems, instead of the independent properties of a quantum system, are the most fundamental elements to construct quantum mechanics. In a recent paper (J. M. Yang, Sci. Rep. 8:13305, 2018), basic relational quantum mechanics framework is formulated to derive quantum probability, Born's Rule, Schrödinger Equations, and measurement theory. This paper further extends the reformulation effort in three aspects. First, it gives a clearer explanation of the key concepts behind the framework to calculate measurement probability. Second, we provide a concrete implementation of the relational probability amplitude by extending the path integral formulation. The implementation not only clarifies the physical meaning of the relational probability amplitude, but also allows us to elegantly explain the double slit experiment, to describe the interaction history between the measured system and a series of measuring systems, and to calculate entanglement entropy based on path integral and influence functional. In return, the implementation brings back new insight to path integral itself by completing the explanation on why measurement probability can be calculated as modulus square of probability amplitude. Lastly, we clarify the connection between our reformulation and the quantum reference frame theory. A complete relational formulation of quantum mechanics needs to combine the present works with the quantum reference frame theory.

Abstract:In the e-print is discussed a few steps to introducing of "vocabulary" of relativistic physics in quantum theory of information and computation (QTI&C). The behavior of a few simple quantum systems those are used as models in QTI&C is tested by usual relativistic tools (transformation properties of wave vectors, etc.). Massless and charged massive particles with spin 1/2 are considered. Field theory is also discussed briefly.

Abstract:The idea that the dynamical properties of quantum systems are invariably relative to other systems has recently regained currency. Using Relational Quantum Mechanics (RQM) for a case study, this paper calls attention to a question that has been underappreciated in the debate about quantum relativism: the question of whether relativity iterates. Are there absolute facts about the properties one system possesses relative to a specified reference, or is this again a relative matter, and so on? It is argued that RQM (in its best-known form) is committed to what I call the Unrestricted Iteration Principle (UIP), and thus to an infinite regress of relativisations. This principle plays a crucial role in ensuring the communicability and coherence of interaction outcomes across observers. It is, however, shown to be incompatible with the widespread, conservative reading of RQM in terms of relations, instead necessitating the adoption of the more unorthodox notion of perspectival facts. I conclude with some reflections on the current state of play in perspectivist versions of RQM and quantum relativism more generally, underscoring both the need for further conceptual development and the importance of the iteration principle for an accurate cost-benefit analysis of such interpretations.

Unraveling the Mystery of Quantum Measurement with A New Space-Time Approach to Relativistic Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:Quantum measurement is a fundamental concept in the field of quantum mechanics. The action of quantum measurement, leading the superposition state of the measured quantum system into a definite output state, not only reconciles contradictions between quantum and classical mechanics but also facilitates quantum state manipulations, including reading and resetting. Despite its significance, four fundamental issues -- randomness, instantaneousness, irreversibility, and preferred-basis -- continue to pose significant challenges to the broader application of quantum measurement and our overall understanding of quantum mechanics. In this work, we employ a new space-time approach to relativistic quantum mechanics to address these issues systematically. Our approach provides a comprehensive elucidation of the intricate connections between quantum measurement and quantum unitary evolution, as well as an in-depth analysis for the interdependence of non-local correlations and relativistic theories. We thereby reveal a more fundamental dynamical theory, beyond the traditional time-evolution equation in quantum mechanics, where the axioms of quantum measurement naturally emerge as a corollary. These findings contribute to the advancement of related fields, and our work holds potential implications for future research and applications in the realm of quantum mechanics.

Abstract:A summary of some lines of ideas leading to model-independent frameworks of relativistic quantum field theory is given. It is followed by a discussion of the Reeh-Schlieder theorem and geometric modular action of Tomita-Takesaki modular objects associated with the quantum field vacuum state and certain algebras of observables. The distillability concept, which is significant in specifying useful entanglement in quantum information theory, is discussed within the setting of general relativistic quantum field theory.

Abstract:Non-relativistic quantum field theory is a framework that describes systems where the velocities are much smaller than the speed of light. A large class of those obey Schrödinger invariance, which is the equivalent of the conformal symmetry in the relativistic world. In this review, we pedagogically introduce the main theoretical tools used to study non-relativistic physics: null reduction and $c \rightarrow \infty$ limits, where $c$ is the speed of light. We present a historical overview of non-relativistic wave equations, Jackiw-Pi vortices, the Aharonov-Bohm scattering, and the trace anomaly for a Schrödinger scalar. We then review modern developments, including fermions at unitarity, the quantum Hall effect, off-shell actions, and a systematic classification of the trace anomaly. The last part of this review is dedicated to current research topics. We define non-relativistic supersymmetry and a corresponding superspace to covariantly deal with quantum corrections. Finally, we define the Spin Matrix Theory limit of the AdS/CFT correspondence, which is a non-relativistic sector of the duality obtained via a decoupling limit, where a precise matching of the two sides can be achieved.

On the relativistic quantum mechanics of a photon between two electrons in 1+1 dimensions

Abstract:A Lorentz-covariant system of wave equations is formulated for a quantum-mechanical three-body system in one space dimension, comprised of one photon and two identical massive spin one-half Dirac particles, which can be thought of as two electrons (or alternatively, two positrons). Manifest covariance is achieved using Dirac's formalism of multi-time wave functions, i.e, wave functions $\Psi(\textbf{x}_{\text{ph}},\textbf{x}_{\text{e}_1},\textbf{x}_{\text{e}_2})$ where $\textbf{x}_{\text{ph}},\textbf{x}_{\text{e}_1},\textbf{x}_{\text{e}_2}$ are generic spacetime events of the photon and two electrons respectively. Their interaction is implemented via a Lorentz-invariant no-crossing-of-paths boundary condition at the coincidence submanifolds $\{\textbf{x}_{\text{ph}}=\textbf{x}_{\text{e}_1}\}$ and $\{\textbf{x}_{\text{ph}}=\textbf{x}_{\text{e}_2}\}$ compatible with conservation of probability current. The corresponding initial-boundary value problem is shown to be well-posed under the additional assumption of anti-symmetry given by the Pauli exclusion principle, and a closed-form solution to the ensuing coupled system of Klein-Gordon and transport equations is given.

The Relativity Principle at the Foundation of Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:Quantum information theorists have created axiomatic reconstructions of quantum mechanics (QM) that are very successful at identifying precisely what distinguishes quantum probability theory from classical and more general probability theories in terms of information-theoretic principles. Herein, we show how one such principle, Information Invariance & Continuity, at the foundation of those axiomatic reconstructions maps to "no preferred reference frame" (NPRF, aka "the relativity principle") as it pertains to the invariant measurement of Planck's constant h for Stern-Gerlach (SG) spin measurements. This is in exact analogy to the relativity principle as it pertains to the invariant measurement of the speed of light c at the foundation of special relativity (SR). Essentially, quantum information theorists have extended Einstein's use of NPRF from the boost invariance of measurements of c to include the SO(3) invariance of measurements of h between different reference frames of mutually complementary spin measurements via the principle of Information Invariance & Continuity. Consequently, the "mystery" of the Bell states that is responsible for the Tsirelson bound and the exclusion of the no-signalling, "superquantum" Popescu-Rohrlich joint probabilities is understood to result from conservation per Information Invariance & Continuity between different reference frames of mutually complementary qubit measurements, and this maps to conservation per NPRF in spacetime. If one falsely conflates the relativity principle with the classical theory of SR, then it may seem impossible that the relativity principle resides at the foundation of non-relativisitic QM. In fact, there is nothing inherently classical or quantum about NPRF. Thus, the axiomatic reconstructions of QM have succeeded in producing a principle account of QM that reveals as much about Nature as the postulates of SR.

Measurement and Probability in Relativistic Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:Ultimately, any explanation of quantum measurement must be extendable to relativistic quantum mechanics (RQM), since many precisely confirmed experimental results follow from quantum field theory (QFT), which is based on RQM. Certainly, the traditional "collapse" postulate for quantum measurement is problematic in a relativistic context, at the very least because, as usually formulated, it violates the relativity of simultaneity. Among alternatives to the traditional collapse interpretation, the Everettian approach of an unmodified, unitary quantum formalism is the only one that has been clearly extended to RQM and QFT. However, the usual "many worlds" interpretation of such an approach leads to to difficulty in how to even define probabilities over different possible "worlds". The present paper addresses this difficulty by providing a relativistic model of measurement, in which the state of the universe is decomposed into decoherent histories of measurements recorded within it. Zurek's concept of envariance can be generalized to this context of relativistic spacetime, giving an objective definition of the probability of any one of these quantum histories, consistent with Born's rule. This then leads to the statistics of any repeated experiment also tending to follow the Born rule as the number of repetitions increases. The wave functions that we actually use for such experiments are local reductions of very coarse-grained superpositions of universal eigenstates, and their "collapse" can be re-interpreted as simply an update based on additional incremental knowledge gained from a measurement about the "real" eigenstate of our universe.

Quantum Mechanics From Principle of Least Observability

Abstract:We show that the basic non-relativistic quantum formulations can be derived from a least observability principle. The principle extends the least action principle from classical mechanics by factoring in two assumptions. First, the Planck constant defines the discrete amount of action a physical object needs to exhibit during its dynamics in order to be observable. Second, there is constant vacuum fluctuation along a classical trajectory. A novel method is introduced to define the information metrics that measures additional observable information due to vacuum fluctuations, which is then converted to the additional action through the first assumption. Applying the variation principle to minimize the total actions allows us to elegantly recover the basic quantum formulations including the uncertainty relation and the Schrödinger equation in both position and momentum representations. Adding the no preferred representation assumption, we obtain the transformation formulation between position and momentum representations. The extended least action principle shows clearly how classical mechanics becomes quantum mechanics. Furthermore, it is a mathematical tool that can bring in new results. By defining the information metrics for vacuum fluctuations using more general definitions of relative entropy, we obtain a generalized Schrödinger equation that depends on the order of relative entropy. The principle can be applied to derive more advance quantum formalism such as quantum scalar field theory.

Classical and quantum gravity from relativistic quantum mechanics

Abstract:It is common practice to describe elementary particles by irreducible unitary representations of the Poincaré group. In the same way, multi-particle systems can be described by irreducible unitary representations of the Poincaré group. Representations of the Poincaré group are characterised by fixed eigenvalues of two Casimir operators corresponding to a fixed mass and a fixed angular momentum. In multi-particle systems (of massive spinless particles), fixing these eigenvalues leads to correlations between the particles. In the quasi-classical approximation of large quantum numbers, these correlations take on the structure of a gravitational interaction described by the field equations of conformal gravity. A theoretical value of the corresponding gravitational constant is calculated. It agrees with the empirical value used in the field equations of general relativity.

Abstract:A non-local hidden variables theory for non-relativisitic quantum theory is presented, which gives a realist completion of quantum mechanics, in the sense of a complete description of individual events. The proposed fundamental theory is an extension of an energetic causal set theory, which assumes that time, events, causal structure, momentum and energy are fundamental. But space and the wave function are emergent. The beables of the theory are the views of the events, which are a subset of their causal pasts. Thus, this theory asserts that the universe is a causal network of events, which consists of partial views of itself as seen by looking backwards from each event. The fundamental dynamics is based on an action whose potential energy is proportional to the variety, which is a measure of the diversity of the views of the events, while the kinetic energy is proportional to its rate of change. The Schroedinger equation is derived to leading order in an expansion in density of the events of the fundamental histories. To higher order, there are computable corrections, non-linear in the wave function, from which new physical effects may be predicted.

Abstract:We extend recent work on quantum geodesics on the Heisenberg algebra for flat spacetime to quantum geodesics on the algebra $D(M)$ of differential operators on a Riemannian or pseudo-Riemannian manifold $M$. The required differential structure has a hidden non-associativity for the product of 1-forms with functions at order $\hbar^2$ due the Riemann curvature, i.e. in the presence of gravity, which is not visible at the operator level. The calculus commutation relations involve the Ricci curvature. As an application, the case of $M$ spacetime provides a new approach to general relativistic quantum mechanics on curved spacetime, with an operator version of the geodesic equations in the Heisenberg picture. In the case of a static metric, there is an effective Schroedinger-like equation with an induced potential depending on the energy with respect to coordinate time. The case of $M$ a Schwarzschild black hole is exhibited in detail and the black-hole gravatom is solved. It is found that its eigenfunctions exhibit probability density banding of a fractal nature approaching the horizon.
