Abstract:The catalytic activity of noble-metal nanocrystals is mainly determined by their sizes and the facets exposed on the surface. For single crystals, it has been demonstrated that the Pd(100) surface is catalytically more active than both Pd(110) and Pd(111) surfaces for the CO oxidation reaction. Here we report the synthesis of Pd nanocrystals enclosed by {100} facets with controllable sizes in the range of 6–18 nm by manipulating the rate of reduction of the precursor. UV-vis spectroscopy studies indicate that the rate of reduction of Na 2 PdCl 4 can be controlled by adjusting the concentrations of Br − and Cl − ions added to the reaction mixture. Pd nanocrystals with different sizes were immobilized on ZnO nanowires and evaluated as catalysts for CO oxidation. We found that the activity of this catalytic system for CO oxidation showed a strong dependence on the nanocrystal size. When the size of the Pd nanocrystals was reduced from 18 nm to 6 nm, the maximum conversion rate was significantly enhanced by a factor of ∼10 and the corresponding maximum conversion temperature was lowered by ∼80 °C.

Abstract:In this paper, bifunctional composite particles were synthesized by in situ grafting Au nanoparticles on the surface of SiO2/polyethyleneimine/Eu-polyoxometalates (SiO2/PEI/Eu-POM) spheres. It was found that the PEI layer on SiO2/PEI/Eu-POM spheres could act as a reductant for in situ reduction of metal ions to Au nanoparticles. The sizes of Au particles grafted on spheres could be tuned by adjusting the sizes of SiO2 spheres. The composite particles showed excellent red luminescence under UV light, which could be observed by naked eyes. In addition, they exhibited good catalytic activity in the oxidation of styrene and reduction of 4-nitrophenol. The smaller composite particles show the better overall performance in the catalytic reaction because of their lager active surface. The present strategy gives a promising way to prepare bifunctional composites for broad applications in catalysis and labeling. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:As a typical noble nanomaterial, silver (Ag) nanoparticles have been widely used as a catalyst, but their performance is somewhat limited by self-aggregation. In this study, H2SrTa2O7 nanosheet-supported ultrafine Ag nanoparticles (Ag/H2SrTa2O7) were successfully synthesized, and the aggregation of Ag nanoparticles was effectively prevented. The Ag/H2SrTa2O7 catalyst exhibited excellent activity in p-nitrophenol reduction and was successfully recycled 10 times without a substantial decrease in its catalytic activity. This superior catalytic activity could be ascribed to the large surface area of H2SrTa2O7 nanosheets and the effective dispersion of Ag nanoparticles on the perovskite nanosheets. This work is important for the simple and green preparation of Ag catalysts with excellent catalytic performance on nontoxic perovskite nanosheets.

Abstract:For improving stability and efficiency of noble metal nanomaterials, a straightforward one-step method was developed to synthesize Au-SiO2 composite nanospheres. Monodisperse hybrid silica nanospheres that had anilino-methyl on the surfaces were prepared first. The as-prepared hybrid silica nanospheres were then used to obtain Au nanocrystal through the redox reaction of HAuCl4 and anilino-methyl. This approach led to a better utilization of Au. By adjusting the surface morphologies and the particle sizes, the functional nanospheres displayed different surface-enhanced Raman scattering effects of Rhodamine 6G. The composite nanospheres showed high catalytic activity and good reusability in catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol because of their active gold surface.

Abstract:A facile and controllable method of immobilizing gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on hollow silica particles (SiO(2)HPs) is proposed and the resultant SiO2HP/AuNP composite particles exhibit high catalytic activity. The carrier SiO(2)HPs decorated with amino groups are prepared in a W/O inverse emulsion, having a well-defined hollow structure, mesoporous wall and dense bush-like surface morphology. A large number of ultrafine AuNPs are generated via in situ reduction of chloroauric acid by the amino groups and firmly anchored on the bush-like silica shell. The structure and morphology of the composites are governed by changing the weight percentage of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane in the total amount of monomers (W-a), which have been extensively characterized. Benefiting from the unique multiple structures, the composite particles exhibited outstanding catalytic efficiency and repeatability, which are confirmed by two oxidation-reduction reactions of 2-nitroaniline/NaBH4 and 4-nitrophenol/NaBH4.

Abstract:Preparing dispersed cores–shell structured Au@SiO2 nanocomposites with an active Au core size below 2 nm that exhibit excellent catalytic performance still remains a major challenge in catalytic synthesis. In this work, we report a novel preparation method for a one-pot system fabrication of an ultrafine core–shell structured Au@SiO2 intestine-shaped nanocomposite. The preparation is used to fabricate catalysts with an Au core size of about 1.4 nm and requires neither prefabricated Au cores nor special reducing agents. Upon extraction of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, abundant pores with a size of around 1.9 nm are formed in the silica shell. During the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenolate, the catalyst unambiguously exhibits superior catalytic activity. Despite having a low 1.7% Au content in catalyst, the nanocomposites achieve an activity of ʊ = 19.1 × 10−3 s−1 mg−1. This is due to the fact that the polyvinylpyrrolidone coating is transformed into discrete particles in an alkaline solution, which exposes large active areas on the Au.

Abstract:Exploring cost-effective catalysts with high catalytic performance and long-term stability has always been a general concern for environment protection and energy conversion. Here, Au nanoparticles (NPs) embedded CuOx-CeO2 core/shell nanospheres (Au@CuOx-CeO2 CSNs) have been successfully prepared through a versatile one-pot method at ambient conditions. The spontaneous auto-redox reaction between HAuCl4 and Ce(OH)3 in aqueous solution triggered the self-assembly growth of micro-/ nanostructural Au@CuOx-CeO2 CSNs. Meanwhile, the CuOx clusters in Au@CuOx-CeO2 CSNs are capable of improving the anti-sintering ability of Au NPs and providing synergistic catalysis benefits. As a result, the confined Au NPs exhibited extraordinary thermal stability even at a harsh thermal condition up to 700 °C. In addition, before and after the severe calcination process, Au@CuOx-CeO2 CSNs can exhibit enhanced catalytic activity and excellent recyclability towards the hydrogenation of p-nitrophenol compared to previously reported nanocatalysts. The synergistic catalysis path between Au/CuOx/CeO2 triphasic interfaces was revealed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The CuOx clusters around the embedded Au NPs can provide moderate adsorption strength of p-nitrophenol, while the adjacent CeO2-supported Au NPs can facilitate the hydrogen dissociation to form H* species, which contributes to achieve the efficient reduction of p-nitrophenol. This study opens up new possibilities for developing high-efficient and sintering-resistant micro-/nanostructural nanocatalysts by exploiting multiphasic systems.

Abstract:The core-shell Au@resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) nanospheres with multiple cores have been successfully synthesized by a modified Stober method. After coating mesoporous silica and the calcination, the Au@meso-SiO2 hollow nanospheres with multiple gold cores can be obtained, which have a high surface area (similar to 537 m(2)/g) and uniform pore size (similar to 2.5 nm). The Au@meso-SiO2 hollow nanospheres can be used as a catalyst for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol by NaBH4 into 4-aminophenol, and exhibit excellent catalytic performance. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:In this paper, the synthesis and properties of composite silica microspheres grafted with gold nanoparticles and lanthanide-polyoxometalates are described. This synthesis employs polyethyleneimine as the crosslink polymer to immobilize the Au nanoparticles and lanthanide-polyoxometalates on silica spheres, which results in the formation of bifunctional composite microspheres of silica/lanthanide-polyoxometalates/Au. The composite material was found to be catalytically active in the oxidation of styrene, and benzaldehyde and styrene oxide were the main products. Catalyzed oxidation of styrene demonstrates the size-dependent activity of catalysts and the smaller catalyst shows the higher selectivity. Moreover, the composite particles show bright red luminescence under UV light, which could be seen by naked eyes. The luminescence properties of composite material and the effect of Au nanoparticles on the luminescence of Eu ion were investigated, and energy could be more effectively transferred from ligand to lanthanide ion when Au nanoparticles were grafted on silica spheres. The integration of luminescent components and Au particles makes it possible to label catalyst and monitor the catalyzed reactions.
Preparation of Highly Active Silica-Supported Au Catalysts for Co Oxidation by A Solution-Based Technique

Abstract:Although Au catalysts can be readily prepared on titania via the deposition-precipitation (DP) method, the direct application of the method similar to the preparation of silica-supported Au catalysts only results in diminished success. This paper reports a novel, efficient method to synthesize highly active Au catalysts supported on mesoporous silica (SBA-15) through a gold cationic complex precursor [Au(en)(2)](3+) (en = ethylenediamine) via a wet chemical process. The gold cationic precursor was immobilized on negatively charged surfaces of silica by a unique DP method that makes use of the deprotonation reaction of ethylenediamine ligands. The resulting mesoporous catalyst has been demonstrated to be highly active for CO oxidation at room temperature and even below 273 K, the activity of which is much superior to that of silica-supported Au catalysts previously prepared by various solution techniques. The pH value of the gold precursor solution plays a key role in determining the catalytic activity through the regulation of [Au(en)(2)](3+) deprotonation reaction and the surface interaction of silica with the gold precursor. This mesoporous gold silica catalyst has also been shown to be highly resistant to sintering because of the stabilization of Au nanoparticles inside mesopores.

Abstract:Although various alloys and core-shell nanoparticles with excellent plasmonic properties have been used in plasmon-enhanced catalysis, the integration of strong, tunable plasmonic properties and exceptional catalytic activities on the same nanoscale of noble metal nanoparticles remains challenging. Herein, a novel method is involved to produce highly monodisperse and uniform silica-encapsulated Au-Ag core-shell nanorod catalysts with tunable plasmonic properties. Our technique can create atomic terraces and steps, generating localized high-index facets on Ag shell by virtue of surface etching silver oxide, and these surface defects serve as active catalytic sites. It is found that the nanostructures exhibit excellent catalytic performances alongside superiorities in reusability and stability. Further investigations indicate that the plasmon-induced electromagnetic field enhancement effect also contributes to the catalytic activity of the nanostructures. The strategy will enable us to take a deep insight into the promotion of catalytic activity, stability and reusability of plasmonic nanoparticles.

Abstract:Direct fabrication of core-shell or yolk-shell functional nanomaterials via a facile template-free method remains a challenge. In this work, we present a novel approach that involves straightforward chemical transformation and thermal treatment of the infinite coordination polymer particles to obtain composition-tunable CeO(2) yolk-shell structures. Uniform CeO(2) yolk-shell hollow spheres with a high surface area are promising support materials for tiny gold nanoparticles (ca. 4 nm), forming Au-CeO(2) nanocomposites which exhibit a remarkable catalytic activity and high stability for the reduction of p-nitrophenol. A possible mechanism for the formation of CeO(2) yolk-shell microspheres is also proposed.

Abstract:Selective growth/etching of hybrid materials is very important for the rational synthesis of hierarchical structures and precise modulation of their physical properties. Here, the lateral etching of the core-shell Au@Ag nanorods is achieved by FeCl3 at room temperature, producing a number of dumbbell-like Ag-tipped Au nanorods. This selective etching at the side of the core-shell nanorods is attributed to the increased reactivity of the side facets, due to less surface passivation of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. The similar synthetic strategy has also been demonstrated to be successful for the Pd-tipped Au nanorods that have not been reported before, indicating the great potential of this selective etching. The Ag-tipped Au nanorods are examined as a catalyst for the reduction of p-nitrophenol at room temperature. The Ag-tipped Au nanorods exhibit a higher catalytic activity than Au nanorods and core-shell Au@Ag nanorods, which could be attributed to the electronic effect and the unique structure in the Ag-tipped Au nanorods.

Abstract:A facile one-pot method has been developed to synthesize uniform gold@mesoporous silica nanospheres (Au@MSNs), which have a well-defined core-shell structure with ordered mesoporous silica as a shell. The resulting Au@MSNs have a high surface area (∼521 m2/g) and uniform pore size (∼2.5 nm) for the mesoporous silica shell. The diameter of the gold core can be regulated by adjusting the amount of HAuCl4. The catalytic performance of the Au@MSNs was investigated using the reduction of 4-nitrophenol as a model reaction. The mesopores of the silica shells provide direct access for the reactant molecules to diffuse and subsequently interact with the gold cores. In addition, the Au@MSNs display the great advantage of sintering-resistance to 950 °C because the mesoporous silica shells inhibit aggregation or deformation of the gold cores. The high thermal stability enables the Au@MSNs to be employed in high-temperature catalytic reactions.

Abstract:A high-efficiency nanoelectrocatalyst based on high-density Au/Pt hybrid nanoparticles supported on a silica nanosphere (Au-Pt/SiO2) has been prepared by a facile wet chemical method. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy are employed to characterize the obtained Au-Pt/SiO2. It was found that each hybrid nanosphere is composed of high-density small Au/Pt hybrid nanoparticles with rough surfaces. These small Au/Pt hybrid nanoparticles interconnect and form a porous nanostructure, which provides highly accessible activity sites, as required for high electrocatalytic activity. We suggest that the particular morphology of the AuPt/SiO2 may be the reason for the high catalytic activity. Thus, this hybrid nanomaterial may find a potential application in fuel cells.
Fe3O4@Carbon Microsphere Supported Ag–Au Bimetallic Nanocrystals with the Enhanced Catalytic Activity and Selectivity for the Reduction of Nitroaromatic Compounds

Abstract:The heterostructure Ag-Au bimetallic nanocrystals supported on Fe3O4@carbon composite microspheres were synthesized by one facile and controllable approach, wherein the Ag nanocrystals attached on the Fe3O4@carbon microspheres were prepared first and served as reductant for the galvanic replacement reaction with the Au precursor (HAuCl4). Upon varying the feeding amounts of the Au precursor, the bimetallic compositions on the Fe3O4@carbon microsphere could be readily tuned resulting in a series of composite microspheres with different Au-to-Ag molar ratios. Subsequently, we thus investigated the catalytic activity and selectivity of the magnetic composite catalysts from two sides. First, 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) was applied as a model molecule to study the effect of different Au-to-Ag molar ratios on catalytic capabilities of the resulting composite microspheres. It was found that upon the addition of NaBH4 the catalytic capability was markedly enhanced when the Au content was increased. The maximum activity parameter value reached 1580 which is far higher than those of known monometallic composites. Also, they could give the equally high yields for other nitroaromatic compounds with various substituents, irrespective of the linked electron donating or electron withdrawing groups. Second, the synergistic effects of the carbon substrate in the catalysis reaction were demonstrated. When compared with colloidal SiO2, TiO2, and poly(styrene-co-acrylic acid) substrates, the carbon support not only facilitated the enhancement of the catalytic performance of the noble metal nanocrystals but was also more suitable for the in situ preparation of Au Ag bimetallic nanocrystals using the GRR. Besides, the particles' convenience in terms of their magnetic separability and outstanding reusability was validated through many successive reduction reaction cycles. In light of these unique characteristics, the Fe3O4@C@Ag-Au composite microspheres show promising and great potential for practical applications.

Abstract:This work reported a facile method for fabricating multi-layered polydopamine (PDA) encapsulated AuAg@C@AuAg core/shell nanosphere with a hollow interior. During the synthetic process, the preliminary Ag@C nanosphere is easily covered by an AuAg/PDA hybrid layer through the in situ redox-oxidized polymerization to form the Ag-AuAg@C@AuAg/PDA precursor, in which the AuAg bimetallic nanocrystals are simultaneously obtained via the electrochemical substitution reaction. After etching the residue Ag core, the final AuAg@C@AuAg/PDA hybrid nanosphere is achieved and the inner AuAg shows a unique nanoframe-like nanostructure. The carbon shell plays an important role for the formation and structure evolution of the AuAg@C@AuAg/PDA, and the composition can be modulated by varying the polymerization process. Owing to the well distributed AuAg nanocrystals and inner AuAg nanoframes, the AuAg@C@AuAg/PDA shows better performance than Ag-AuAg@C@AuAg/PDA precursor in catalyzing 4-nitrophenol, and the rate constant (K) to catalyst weight ratio reaches as high as 3.63 min-1 •mg-1. As a result, this work not only offers a hybrid bi-metallic nanocatalyst with excellent performance, but also has valuable implications for compositional modulation of hollow interior multi-layered nanostructure in adsorption, drug delivery, and nanocatalysis.

Strategy to improve gold nanoparticles loading efficiency on defect-free high silica ZSM-5 zeolite for the reduction of nitrophenols

Abstract:<p>Catalytic reduction of toxic and aqueous stable nitrophenols by gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) is hot issue due to the serious environmental pollution in recent years. But the expensive price and poor recycling performance of Au NPs limit its further application. Defect-free high silica zeolite is suitable support for Au NPs due to its cheaper price, higher stability and stronger adsorbability, but the low alumina content and defect sites usually lead to poor Au NPs loading efficiency. Herein, we reported the improved Au NPs loading efficiency on defect-free high silica ZSM-5 zeolite through the additional surface fluffy structure. The fluffy structure was created through the addition of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and ethanol into synthesis gel. Highly dispersed ca. 4 nm Au NPs on zeolite surface are prepared by the green enhanced sol-gel immobilization method. The Au NPs loading efficiency on conventional ZSM-5 zeolite is 10.7%, in contrast, this result can arrive to 82.6% on fluffy structure ZSM-5 zeolite. The fluffy structure ZSM-5 zeolite and Au NPs nanocomposites show higher efficiency than traditional Au/ZSM-5 nanocomposites towards catalytic reduction of nitrophenols. Additionally, the experiments with different affecting factors (MWCNTs dosage, aging time, catalysts dosage, pH, initial 4-NP concentration, storage time and recycling times) were carried out to test general applicability of the nanocomposites. And the degradation of nitrophenols experiment was operated to explore the catalytic performance of the prepared nanocomposites in further environmental application. The detailed possible relationship between zeolite with fluffy structure and Au NPs is also proposed in the paper.</p>
