Abstract:In the present study, a new low-cost bioceramic nanocomposite based on porous hydroxyapatite (HAp) and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as surfactant was successfully obtained by a simple chemical co-precipitation. The composition and structure of the HAp-CTAB were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectrometer, and N2 adsorption/desorption analysis. The capacity of HAp-CTAB nanocomposites to remove the lead ions from aqueous solutions was studied by adsorption batch experiments and proved by Langmuir and Freundlich models. The Pb2+ removal efficiency of HAp-CTAB biocomposite was also confirmed by non-destructive ultrasound studies. The cytotoxicity assays showed that the HAp-CTAB nanocomposites did not induce any significant morphological changes of HeLa cells after 24 h of incubation or other toxic effects. Taken together, our results suggests that the obtained porous HAp-CTAB powder could be used for the decontamination of water polluted with heavy metals, such as Pb2+.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution has become a major global problem, which threatens the environment and human life by its toxicity. Development of novel low-cost adsorbents for heavy metals removal has attracted great attention. In this study, bentonite, iron powder (IP) and activated carbon (AC) were used to prepare Fe2O3–ceramisite (FOC) by sintering at 800°C. Effects of weight ratio of raw materials on physical properties of FOC including bulk density (BD), 1-h water adsorption rate (WAR), acid solubility (AS), BET surface area and average pore size (APS) were examined. Experiments were conducted to determine the factors affecting sorption of Pb(II) and Zn(II) on FOC including initial metal ion concentration, contact time and initial solution pH. Experimental data were tested using different kinetics models. Results revealed that: With an increase of AC rate, WAR, AS, APS and BET surface area increased linearly, while BD linearly decreased. Hematite (Fe2O3) was the main crystalline phase emerging in FOC, which promoted the removal of Pb(II) and Zn(II) by formation of Pb(II)/Zn(II)-containing crystalline phases in the reacted FOC. The cation-ion exchange reaction played an important role in the removal of Pb(II) and Zn(II). The pseudo-second order model was most applicable to describe the removal process of Pb(II) and Zn(II).

Abstract:Porous ceramic compound as adsorbents for heavy metal removal was produced by mixing kaolin with charcoal in addition to cobalt ferrite nanoparticles at 0, 3, 5, 7, and 10 wt%. The synthesized magnetic cobalt ferrites, prepared using sol–gel auto-combustion method, were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometer, as well as examining the physical and mechanical characteristics of the kaolin/cobalt ferrite composite. PH and adsorbent dose were studied in the context of the adsorption of Pb 2+ , with a comparison of results against using crushed kaolin/CoFe 2 O 4 powder. The resulting CoFe2O4 nanoparticles have saturation magnetization values of about 48.85 emu/g. Darcy permeability of the porous ceramics prepared by the semi-dry pressing method was increased from 1.9 to 4.6 cm/s; meanwhile, for porous ceramics prepared by the slip casting method, the permeability varied from 5 to 7.9 cm/s. Utilizing kaolin/CoFe2O4 particles, the best removal efficiency for Pb2 + was found to be 100% at pH 3 used 10 wt% of Co-ferrite for samples prepared by slip casting method and 91.9% for samples prepared by semi-dry method. In contrast, the best lead removal efficiency of 89.6% was reported at pH 5 when utilizing crushed kaolin/CoFe2O4 powder, and the removal efficiency increased at high concentrations of lead ions from 16.7 to 96.68%, with the highest adsorption of lead ions obtained at 50 min, reaching a removal efficiency of 83.23%.

Abstract:The ability of Cu(II)-exchanged montmorillonite (CEM) to adsorb lead (Pb) from aqueous was studied at different optimized conditions including shaking time, pH and initial concentration. The amount of CEM necessary to remove lead from solution was about 0.1g for 100–200mg/L lead in pH 4.0 solution. The maximum adsorption was 30min of shaking time using CEM as adsorbent. By increasing pH, the adsorption of lead onto CEM increased, the maximum adsorption=96%. Animal experiment of this study also indicated that with the addition of CEM to the lead-contaminated diet of pig, lead excretion in faeces were increased significantly (P<0.01), tissue lead levels were reduced significantly (P<0.05), and growth performance of pigs were improve obviously (P<0.05). Thus, the use of CEM as a Pb-expellant in animal's diets was safe for animals and for consumers.
Facile self-assembly synthesis of titanate/Fe3O4 nanocomposites for the efficient removal of Pb2+ from aqueous systems

Abstract:We report a novel process for the self-assembly of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) onto titanate nanotubes (TNTs), nanofibers (TNFs) and nanosheets (TNSs) to synthesize magnetic titanate nanocomposites. Both coulombic and van der Waals forces made important contributions to control the assembly process, in which the Fe3O4 NPs were uniformly dispersed onto the surfaces of the titanate nanostructures by a facile acid-induced method. The Fe3O4 NPs possessed unique magnetic properties for adsorbent separation, while the structures of the titanates determined the efficiency of Pb2+ removal. Interestingly, it was found that Pb2+ can be completely and quickly removed by the TNTs/Fe3O4 and TNSs/Fe3O4 nanocomposites. It is worth noting that the TNTs/Fe3O4 nanocomposite possessed the maximum adsorption capacity of 382.3 mg g−1, displaying a high efficiency for Pb2+ removal. The effects of pH value and contact time at different initial Pb2+ concentrations have been investigated. Based on the characterization results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy, a possible removal mechanism was proposed. This work provides a facile and general approach to synthesize magnetic functional nanocomposites for water treatment.

Adsorptive Removal of Pb(II) by Magnetic Activated Carbon Incorporated with Amino Groups from Aqueous Solutions

Abstract:A novel adsorbent (AC/Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2) was synthesized via a co-condensation process for the enhanced removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. Characterization analyses including SEM, TEM, BET and XRD confirmed the successful integration of magnetic nanoparticles and amino groups with carbon matrix. Results demonstrated that AC/Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2 (mass ratio of AC to Fe3O4 was 1:0.25) with specific surface area (48.9 m(2)/g) showed higher adsorption capacity for Pb(II) as compared to other mass ratios. Kinetics study revealed that the adsorption reach equilibrium within 20 h and the maximum adsorption capacity of 104.2 mg/g was achieved with increasing the initial concentration from 20 to 250 mg/L using AC/Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2. Maximum removal efficiency was recorded at pH 5.2 and the removal capacities toward four divalent metal ions calculated by the Langmuir model were found to be in the order of Pb(II) > Cu(II) > Ni(II) > Cd(II). Furthermore, Delta G(0) decreased from -1.6 to -3.1 kJ/mol with increase in temperature from 293 to 333 K illustrating that the adsorption was spontaneous and an endothermic process. Complexation adsorption mechanism was found prominent in FTIR and XPS analyses between Pb(II) and AC/Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2 due to the presence of amino groups. Abstract:Efficient elimination of As(III) from drinking water and wastewater has been a challenge because of its neutral molecular form. To address this problem, a novel nanocomposite, mesoporous cerium oxide-anchored magnetic polyhedrons derived from MIL-100(Fe) was fabricated via a strategy combining impregnation and calcination. The resultant products (denoted as Fe2O3/CeO2-t) exhibited a unique octahedral nanostructure decorated by mesoporous cerium oxide. Surface modification of CeO2 enhanced As(III) removal in comparison to unmodified Fe2O3. Particularly, Fe2O3/CeO2-4 h can reduce As(III) concentration from 180 to 10 µg/L within 20 min, which was almost 9 times faster than unmodified Fe2O3. The adsorption behavior conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.9908) and the Freundlich isotherm model (R2 = 0.9943). The maximum adsorption capacity of As(III) by Fe2O3/CeO2-4 h was 68.25 mg/g, higher than those reported for similar adsorbents. Its enhanced removal mechanism can be attributed mainly to the mesoporous characteristics and oxidization ability of surface ceria. The composite can be separated from water by external magnets and easily regenerated. This study may offer a clue to the design of metal-organic framework-based composites as an alternative adsorbent for arsenite cleanup.
Efficient Pb(II) removal from contaminated soils by recyclable, robust lignosulfonate/polyacrylamide double-network hydrogels embedded with Fe2O3 via one-pot synthesis

Abstract:Soil heavy metal removal strategies are increasingly valued for effectively reducing contamination and preventing secondary pollution. In this work, a double network hydrogel (Fe2O3@LH), consisting of lignosulfonate (LS) and polyacrylamide with embedded Fe2O3 nanoparticles, was synthesized successfully via a one-pot method and subsequently applied to adsorb lead (Pb) from contaminated soil. Incorporating Fe2O3 into the hydrogel enhances the adsorption capacity of Fe2O3@LH for Pb(II). The Fe2O3@LH hydrogel demonstrates a maximum Pb(II) adsorption capacity of 143.11 mg g-1, with Pb(II) removal mechanisms involving electrostatic adsorption, cation exchange, precipitation reactions, and the formation of coordination complexes, achieving a 22.3 % maximum removal efficiency in soil cultivation experiments. Additionally, the application of Fe2O3@LH markedly reduces the concentrations of cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) in the soil, meanwhile enhances the levels of total nitrogen (TN), soil organic matter (SOM), and cation exchange capacity (CEC) by 23.1 %, 10.6 %, and 16.9 %, respectively. Following 90 days of continuous application in the soil, the recovery rate of Fe2O3@LH remains above 75 %. The toxicity assay using zebrafish larvae indicates that Fe2O3@LH demonstrates good biosafety. This study demonstrates the considerable potential of Fe2O3@LH hydrogel for practical application in reducing Pb(II) levels in contaminated soil.

Abstract:The reuse and recycling of bulk solid waste, such as tailings, presents a challenge to achieving sustainability in contemporary urban development. In this study, adopting the “waste for waste” approach, a novel form of ceramsite was devised utilizing iron tailings and coal gangue to adsorb Pb(II) from the groundwater environment. The optimized ceramsite, sintered at 850 ℃ with the addition of 30 % coal gangue, exhibited good adsorption potential and environmental friendliness. The optimized ceramsite was a viable material for efficiently removing Pb(II) within the acidic pH range (Qe = 12.28 mg/g). The outcomes from batch experiments and various characterizations of the materials revealed that the adsorption mechanisms of ceramsite involved both physical and chemical adsorption, with chemisorption being the most significant. Column studies showed that ceramsite as fillers could be effective in treating lead discharges from groundwater during mining utilization. The dynamic reaction process of the ceramsite exhibited the most accurate fit with the Thomas and Yan models. The primary adsorption mechanisms included the ceramsite's abundant pores facilitating cation exchange, attraction of Pb(II) to the anionic groups on the ceramsite resulting in its deposition and coverage on the particle surface, and the formation of stable Pb-O and Si-O-Pb bonds. These findings indicate that ceramsite prepared from iron tailings and coal gangue shows promise as an adsorbent for treating lead-containing wastewater.

Abstract:This study attempted to synthesize a novel ceramsite with excellent adsorption property compositing through the co-combustion of biomass and sewage sludge ash (CBSA), gasification of coal fly ash (GCFA) and sewage sludge (SS) to dispose wastewater contaminated by Pb (II). The optimum preparation conditions included a CBSA/SS/GCFA ratio of 70:18:12, preheating at 480 °C, and sintering at 1060 °C for 15 min. The basic and environmental characteristics of the novel ceramsite meet specific standards requirements. The removal rate could reach 99.9% under optimum conditions in a high-concentration solution, and the novel ceramsite could be reused 6 times and maintain in high remove rate. The adsorption mechanism was determined to be as follows: (1) Ceramsite features a mesoporous structure with an abundance of pores on which cationic exchange could occur. (2) Pb (II) enters the pores of the adsorbent and are attracted by anionic groups to deposit on the surface of ceramsite. (3) A large amount of Pb (II) bonds with SiO or AlOSiO to embed in the matrix frame of the adsorbent; the rest of the metal forms precipitates on the frame layer or [PO4].

Abstract:Ferric oxide nanoparticles are environmentally benign and can be selective toward lead, especially in neutral to mildly alkaline pH of groundwater. However, due to very fine particles and low mechanical strength, it prevents these materials to apply in point of use filter or large scale fixed-bed adsorption. In this study, polymeric gel cation exchanger, Purolite C100, supported ferric oxide nanoparticles, C100-Fe, was synthesized, characterized, and tested with challenging water according to NSF standards 53. From SEM-EDX studies, it can imply that high concentration of iron can be doped and distributed within the gel phase structure of the C100 approximately 22% by mass. The TEM micrographs confirm the size of hydrated ferric oxide fall into the nanometer range about 10-60 mm. The fixed-bed adsorption experiments demonstrated that C100-Fe can remove lead below the stringent standard of 0.05 mg/L up to 15,000 BVs, whereas the GAC, GAC-Fe, and C100 can treat the same test water only 1200, 1700, and 3500 BVs, respectively. The results confirm that C100-Fe can be efficiently substituted to the traditional GAC for lead removal in drinking water.

Abstract:A novel composite adsorbent, hydroxyapatite/magnetite (HAp/Fe3O4), has been prepared for the purpose of removing lead ions from aqueous solution. Varying factors that may affect the adsorption efficiency, including adsorbent dosage, solution pH and coexistent substances such as humic acid and competing cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, K+ and Na+), have been investigated. It is remarkable that using the developed composite absorbent, more than 99% of Pb2+ can be removed under desirable experimental conditions. The maximum adsorption capacity for HAp/Fe3O4 is 598.8mg/g, which is much greater than that for the previously reported materials. It is found that depending on its concentrations, humic acid affects the efficiency of lead removal, but the coexisting cations, e.g., K+, Ca2+, Na+ and Mg2+, have small influence. Mechanistic studies show that the adsorption data fits the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models reasonably well and the adsorption processes obey the pseudo-second-order kinetics model. Based on the experiment results, it is concluded that dissolution/precipitation and the surface complexation are mutually responsible for lead adsorption on HAp/Fe3O4, which should be attributed to the multiple functionalities of the material.

Highly Effective Removal of Heavy Metals by Polymer-Based Zirconium Phosphate: A Case Study of Lead Ion

Abstract:Zirconium phosphate (ZrP) has recently been demonstrated as an excellent sorbent for heavy metals due to its high selectivity, high thermal stability, and absolute insolubility in water. However, it cannot be readily adopted in fixed beds or any other flowthrough system due to the excessive pressure drop and poor mechanical strength resulting from its fine submicrometer particle sizes. In the present study a hybrid sorbent, i.e., polymer-supported ZrP, was prepared by dispersing ZrP within a strongly acidic cation exchanger D-001 and used for enhanced lead removal from contaminated waters. D-001 was selected as a host material for sorbent preparation mainly because of the Donnan membrane effect resulting from the nondiffusible negatively charged sulfonic acid group on the exchanger surface, which would enhance permeation of the targeted metal ions. The hybrid sorbent (hereafter denoted ZrP-001) was characterized using a nitrogen adsorption technique, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Lead sorption onto ZrP-001 was found to be pH dependent due to the ion-exchange mechanism, and its sorption kinetics onto ZrP-001 followed the pseudo-first-order model. Compared to D-001, ZrP-001 exhibited more favorable lead sorption particularly in terms of high selectivity, as indicated by its substantially larger distribution coefficients when other competing cations Na+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ coexisted at a high level in solution. Fixed-bed column runs showed that lead sorption on ZrP-001 resulted in a conspicuous decrease of this toxic metal from 40 mg/L to below 0.05 mg/L. By comparison with D-001 and ZrP-CP (ZrP dispersion within a neutrally charged polymer CP), enhanced removal efficiency of ZrP-001 resulted from the Donnan membrane effect of the host material D-001. Moreover, its feasible regeneration by diluted acid solution and negligible ZrP loss during operation also helps ZrP-001 to be a potential candidate for lead removal from water. Thus, all the results suggested that ZrP-001 offers excellent potential for lead removal from contaminated water.
Pectin/Activated Carbon-Based Porous Microsphere for Pb2+ Adsorption: Characterization and Adsorption Behaviour

Abstract:The development of effective heavy metal adsorbents has always been the goal of environmentalists. Pectin/activated carbon microspheres (P/ACs) were prepared through simple gelation without chemical crosslinking and utilized for adsorption of Pb2+. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the addition of activated carbon increased the porosity of the microsphere. Texture profile analysis showed good mechanical strength of P/ACs compared with original pectin microspheres. Kinetic studies found that the adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption rate was controlled by film diffusion. Adsorption isotherms were described well by a Langmuir isotherm model, and the maximum adsorption capacity was estimated to be 279.33 mg/g. The P/ACs with the highest activated carbon (P/AC2:3) maintained a removal rate over 95.5% after 10 adsorption/desorption cycles. SEM-energy-dispersive X-ray spectrum and XPS analysis suggested a potential mechanism of adsorption are ion exchange between Pb2+ and Ca2+, electronic adsorption, formation of complexes, and physical adsorption of P/ACs. All the above results indicated the P/ACs may be a good candidate for the adsorption of Pb2+.

Abstract:Carbon dots and their derivatives with fascinating photoluminescence properties have recently attracted tremendous scientific attention. This work describes the preparation of novel fluorescent bentonite clay (B), modified with carbon dot nanomaterials (CDs), and its usage as a lead removal platform. The CDs were prepared using a hydrothermal method from graphitic waste which served as the carbon source material. The as-obtained CDs were found to be fluorescent, being spherical in shape, positively charged, and smaller than 5 nm. Encouraged by their structure and photoluminescence features, they were used as surface modifiers to make fluorescent bentonite nanocomposites. Bentonite was used as a negatively charged model of aluminosilicate and reacted with the positively charged CDs. XRD, FTIR, XPS, and fluorescence analysis were used to characterize the prepared materials. The results indicate that the CDs intercalated inside the bentonite matrix were stable with excellent optical properties over time. They were finally used as an efficient hybrid platform for lead removal with a removal efficiency of 95% under light conditions, at room temperature, in an alkaline medium, and after only 10 min of reaction, compared to 70% under dark conditions. The pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models were better fitted to describe the adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity was equal to 400 mg g −1 toward Pb( II ) removal, at room temperature and pH = 8, under light conditions. In-situ immobilization of CuMOF on sodium alginate/chitosan/cellulose nanofibril composite hydrogel for fast and highly efficient removal of Pb2+ from aqueous solutions

Abstract:Lead is a toxic heavy metal that is highly harmful to humans. Developing fast, efficient, and separable materials to treat lead-contaminated wastewater is challenging. In this paper, Cu-based MOF composite (SCC-CuMOF) was prepared by in-situ growth method and used for the removal of Pb2+ from aqueous solutions. The obtained materials were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) mapping, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared spectroscopy (IR). The effects of pH, coexisting ions, contact time, initial ion concentration, and temperature on the removal of Pb2+ were investigated. SCC-CuMOF exhibited excellent adsorption performance on Pb2+. Adsorption of Pb2+ on SCC-CuMOF were in accordance with the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model. The adsorption thermodynamic study suggested that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. The results revealed that Pb2+ might be adsorbed onto SCC-CuMOF via ion exchange and coordination interaction. In general, SCC-CuMOF has the potential to remove Pb2+ from wastewater rapidly and efficiently.

Abstract:Utilization of readily accessible serpentine mineral, for lead removal from wastewater is a sustainable strategy, but the adsorption capacity of the raw serpentine is limited due to its small interlayer spacing and low surface reactivity, not to say the cases under acidic conditions. In this study, natural serpentine was simply ball-milled to obtain enhanced reactivity and dissolution due to the generation of various lattice defects, which allowed the highly efficient lead fixation even under acidic conditions (at initial pH of 3), compared to that driven by the surface adsorption. Characterizations demonstrated the continuous dissolution of serpentine in solution with the reaction time prolonged, inducing the heterogeneous precipitation of significant (basic) lead carbonate on serpentine surface with an aid of even very dilute atmospheric CO 2 , which worked as the dominated mechanism for enhancing the whole lead fixation efficiency. Results showed that more than 99.5 % of soluble lead could be immobilized within 1 ∼ 2 h with serpentine dosage of 0.5 g/L under low concentration (5 ∼ 100 mg/L), with a high lead fixation capacity about 1782.9 mg/g after 48 h under high concentration (1000 mg/L). Moreover, the stability of the Pb-bearing sediment under acidic exposure (pH 3) for 24 h was confirmed, and the dissolved lead from chloride and sulfate salts could also be immobilized using the as-proposed strategy. Altogether, these findings demonstrated the high efficiency and long-term effectiveness of lead fixation on the ball-milled serpentine, which makes it a promising candidate for application to green remediation of heavy metal contaminations in various sites along with the utilization of waste mineral resources.

Abstract:We report a novel process for the self-assembly of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) onto titanate nanotubes (TNTs), nanofibers (TNFs) and nanosheets (TNSs) to synthesize magnetic titanate nanocomposites. Both coulombic and van der Waals forces made important contributions to control the assembly process, in which the Fe3O4 NPs were uniformly dispersed onto the surfaces of the titanate nanostructures by a facile acid-induced method. The Fe3O4 NPs possessed unique magnetic properties for adsorbent separation, while the structures of the titanates determined the efficiency of Pb2+ removal. Interestingly, it was found that Pb2+ can be completely and quickly removed by the TNTs/Fe3O4 and TNSs/Fe3O4 nanocomposites. It is worth noting that the TNTs/Fe3O4 nanocomposite possessed the maximum adsorption capacity of 382.3 mg g(-1), displaying a high efficiency for Pb2+ removal. The effects of pH value and contact time at different initial Pb2+ concentrations have been investigated. Based on the characterization results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy, a possible removal mechanism was proposed. This work provides a facile and general approach to synthesize magnetic functional nanocomposites for water treatment.

Herein, with bamboo as the raw material, we fabricate a thin-walled hollow ellipsoidal carbon-based adsorbent (CPCs900) containing abundant O-containing groups and carbon defects and having a specific surface area as large as 730.87 m2 g^(-1). Abstract:The process of adsorption shows promise as an effective method for water purification due to its cost-effectiveness, reusability, and adaptability in treating various metal ions. However, it has been noted that this method has limited Fe(III) removal capacity and is susceptible to interference from co-existing ions. To address this, a new adsorbent material (ZEO-PAA) was developed by loading polyacrylic acid (PAA) onto NaOH-treated zeolite using γ-Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) as a linker. In comparison to natural zeolite, ZEO-PAA demonstrates a strong affinity for Fe(III), exhibiting remarkable Fe(III) removal performance even in the presence of other common cations, such as Na(I), Ca(II), and Mg(II). Furthermore, ZEO-PAA maintains high adsorption performance for heavy metal ions such as Pb(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), Cd(II), and Cr(III). After 7 cycles of adsorption/regeneration, the Fe(III) removal rate of ZEO-PAA remains over 85 %. The adsorption process of ZEO-PAA for Fe(III) aligns with the Langmuir isotherm model and PSO Kinetics model, with a maximum adsorption capacity ( q m ) of 37.53 mg/g. This study provides valuable insights into the development of a reusable adsorbent material, demonstrating great potential for practical water treatment.
