Abstract:Lead (Pb) is one of the most widespread toxic heavy metals in water distribution systems and surface water, and how to quickly and completely remove Pb from the water has received global concern. Here we designed and synthesized a 3D nitrogen doped carbon hydrogel/FeMg layered double hydroxide (NC–FeMg LDH) nanocomposite through a one-pot solvothermal process and investigated the Pb removal efficiency and underlying mechanism. Multiple characterization methods including XRD, FTIR, and TEM confirmed that the 3D NC–FeMg LDH is formed by incorporating 2D FeMg-LDH nanosheets with the nitrogen doped carbon hydrogel which is in situ formed in the solvothermal carbonization of glucosamine. The as-synthesized 3D NC–FeMg LDH shows favorable performance in the removal of Pb from aqueous solution with very short equilibrium time (2 min) and large adsorption capacity (344.8 mg g−1). The excellent removal performance toward Pb is demonstrated to be a structure-dependent multiplex surface chemical process between Pb and LDH involving Mg2+/Pb2+ ion exchange, Pb/CO or OC–O, and Pb/pyrrolic N surface complexation. This work may provide an idea for designing hybrid functional materials for selective and high-efficiency removal of other heavy metals from polluted water.
Effective and green in-situ remediation strategies based on TEMPO-nanocellulose/lignin/MIL-100(Fe) hydrogel nanocomposite adsorbent for lead and copper in agricultural soils

Abstract:Hydrogel adsorbents are promising tools for reducing heavy metals' bioavailability in contaminated soil. However, their practical feasibility remains limited by the low stability, inefficient removal efficiency, and potential secondary pollution. Optimizing the adsorption operation and the functional properties of hydrogel adsorbents could eliminate this method's drawbacks. Herein, three innovative in-situ remediation strategies for Pb/Cu-contaminated soil were adopted based on the concept of novel TEMPO-cellulose (TO-NFCs)/lignin/acrylamide@MIL-100(Fe) nanocomposite hydrogel adsorbent (NCLMH). Characteristic analyses revealed ideal Pb/Cu adsorption mechanisms by swelling, complexation, electrical attraction, and ion exchange via carboxyl/hydroxyl/carbonyl groups and unsaturated Fe(III) sites on ANCMH besides FeOOH formation. The highest maximum theoretical adsorption capacities of Pb(II) and Cu(II) on ANCMH were 416.39 and 133.98 mg/g, under pH 6.5, governed by pseudo-second-order/Freundlich models. Greenhouse pot experiments with contaminated soils amended with two-depth layers of 0.5% NCLMHs (SA@NCLMH) displayed a decline in Pb and Cu bioavailability up to 85.9% and 74.5% within 45 d. Soil column studies simulating continuous water soil flushing coupled with NCLMH layers, instead of conventional extractant fluids, and connected to NCLMH-sand column as purification unit (CF@NCLMH) achieved higher removal rates for Pb, and Cu of 89.5% and 77.2% within 24 h. Alternatively, conducting multiple-pulse soil flushing mode (MF@NCLMH) gained the highest Pb and Cu removal of 96.5% and 85.4%, as the water flushing-stop flux events allowed adequate water movement/residence period, promoting Pb/Cu desorption-adsorption from soil to NCLMH. Also, the NCLMH-sand column conducting and easy separation of the stable/reusable NCLMHs prevented the potential secondary pollution. Interestingly, the three remediated soils reached the corresponding regulation of the permissible limits for Pb and Cu residential scenarios in medium-to-heavily agricultural polluted soils, alleviating the Pb/Cu bioaccumulation and phytotoxicity symptoms in cultivated wheat, especially after MF@NCLMH treatment. This study introduces promising alternative remediation strategies with high sustainability and feasibility in acidic-to-neutral heavy metal-contaminated agricultural soil.
Radix Astragali residue-derived porous amino-laced double-network hydrogel for efficient Pb(II) removal: Performance and modeling

Abstract:Valorizing solid waste for heavy metal adsorption is highly desirable to avoid global natural resources depletion. In this study, we developed a new protocol to valorize Radix Astragali residue (one of the Chinese medicine residues) into a low-cost, chemically robust, and highly permeable (ca. 90%) amino-laced porous double-network hydrogel (NH2-CNFs/PAA) for efficient Pb(II) adsorption. The NH2-CNFs/PAA showed (i) excellent Pb(II) adsorption capacity (i.e., 994.5 mg g-1, ~4.8 mmol g-1), (ii) fast adsorption kinetics (kf = 2.01 ×10-5 m s-1), (iii) broad working pH range (2.0-6.0), and (iv) excellent regeneration capability (~15 cycles). (v) excellent performance in various real water matrices on Pb(II) removal. Moreover, its high selectivity (distribution coefficient Kd ~2.4 ×106 mL g-1) toward Pb(II) was owing to the present of abundant amino groups (-NH2). Furthermore, the fix-bed column test indicated the NH2-CNFs/PAA can effectively remove 114.6 bed volumes (influent concentration ~5000 μg L-1) with an enrichment factor 10.9. The full-scale system modeling (i.e., pore surface diffusion model (PSDM)) has been applied to predict the NH2-CNFs/PAA performance on Pb(II) removal. Overall, we have provided an alternative "win-win" scenario that can resolve the Chinese medicine residues disposal issue by valorizing it into high performance gel-based adsorbents for efficient heavy metal removal.
Green remediation of high-lead contaminated soil by stabilization/solidification with insoluble humin: Long-term leaching and mechanical characteristics

Abstract:High concentrations of lead in soil will greatly weaken the stabilization/solidification effect. Humin (HM) is expected to improve this process because it is a neutral, insoluble, porous and green material as well as an eco-friendly adsorbent extracted from natural peat soil. However, HM has not been studied with respect to the stabilization/solidification (S/S) characteristics of potentially toxic element (PTE)-contaminated soil due to its different extraction sources and methods, as well as complex properties. To study these effects, insoluble HM was extracted for treatment of high-lead contaminated soil by cement-based S/S. The experimental results show that HM has a strong adsorption capacity for lead with a maximum adsorption capacity of 200.2 mg kg(-1). The negative influence of a high content of lead on the compressive strength over a 0-90-day period is weakened after adding HM to the soil, wherein a competitive mechanism between HM and a high concentration of lead is proposed. The lead leaching concentration of stabilized soil is significantly decreased under different leaching methods from 0 to 60 days and then decreases slowly. The lead speciation results for the stabilized soil determined through the Tessier sequential extraction method show that HM promotes the gradual chemical transformation of lead from exchangeable and carbonate-bound fractions to a more stable state, with respective decreases of 27.5% and 15.1%. In addition, SEM-EDS images show that HM with a high porosity and specific surface area coexists well with cement, which promotes the stabilization of lead. In conclusion, HM contributes to decreasing the mobility and bioavailability of lead and achieving environmental remediation.
Co-high-efficiency washing agents for simultaneous removal of Cd, Pb and As from smelting soil with risk assessment

Abstract:Soil washing is considered a highly efficient technology due to its higher removal rate of multiple heavy metals from contaminated soil. However, previous studies on Cd, Pb and As washing agents for soils with complex contaminations did not consider the differences in As and Cd/Pb properties, resulting in the lack of effective washing compounds and washing conditions for soils with complex contaminations. Moreover, most traditional washing agents can cause secondary pollution. In this study, HEDTA and lactic acid (LA) treatments resulted in a higher Cd and Pb removal, while 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) was more effective in As removal. Most importantly, a new washing strategy was proposed with a new combined high-efficiency washing agents consisting of HEDP + LA + FeCl3 with a ratio of 6:3:1. Considering washing efficiency and consumption under optimal washing conditions, i.e. the soil/liquid (S/L) ratio of 1:20 and washing time of 48 h, the rates of Cd, Pb and As removal were 79.93%, 69.84% and 61.55%, respectively. In addition, washing process could influence the speciation of heavy metals, especially oxidizable and residual Cd and Pb fractions, as well as reducible As fraction. The washing process using the new washing agent can significantly reduce the pollution level and health risk of Cd, Pb and As contamination. The results of this study can provide an efficient washing agent for the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils at smelting sites, which will help protect human health.

Abstract:The efficient enrichment and remediation of heavy metals from realistic wastewater and contaminated soil containing large excess of competitive ions remains a daunting challenge by far. In the present study, flower-like molybdenum disulfide decorated with iron oxide nanoparticles (MoS2/Fe3O4) is designed via a two-step hydrothermal method and mainly applied in the removal of Hg(II) and Pb(II) ions in aqueous environment. Exhaustive morphological, chemical and magnetic characterizations verify the successful formation of magnetic MoS2/Fe3O4. Batch adsorption experiments show that the obtained MoS2/Fe3O4 nanohybrid enables efficient capture of Hg(II) and Pb(II) ions, accompanied by ease-of-separation from solution by simply applying a magnet. In this respect, high adsorption capacities (263.6 mg g-1 for Pb(II) and 428.9 mg g-1 for Hg(II)) can be gained under optimized conditions (pH = 5.0; 298 K; nanohybrid dosage: 0.8 g L-1 and the contact time: 180 min). In addition, the effects of different parameters such as initial Pb(II)/Hg(II) concentration (50-500 mg L-1), temperature (298, 308 and 318 K) and co-existing ions (Zn(II), Cu(II), Cd(II) and Mg(II)) were systematically probed. The favorable adsorption capacity, selectivity and recyclability mainly originates from the strong Hg2+/Pb2+···S2- bonding interactions. Practical application potential of magnetic MoS2/Fe3O4 nanohybrid in realistic lead-acid battery industry wastewater and Pb(II)-contaminated soil is further explored, achieving promising results with high Pb(II) removal efficiency of 99.63% for wastewater and 57.15% for soil. Simple preparation, easy separation and high adsorption capacity would foster thus-designed sulfide-based nanohybrid a promising adsorbent for heavy metal removal from wastewater and contaminated soil.

Abstract:A new polymer-supported hybrid adsorbent (HFO-P(TAA/HEA)) for highly efficient removal of Pb2+, Cu2+, Cd2+ and Ni2+ from wastewater was developed by supporting hydrous ferric oxide (HFO) nanoparticles onto a porous poly(trans-Aconitic acid/2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) hydrogel (P(TAA/HEA)) with in situ precipitation method. Swelling kinetics, scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used for characterization of the prepared HFO-P(TAA/HEA). The characterization data demonstrated that the hybrid hydrogel HFO-P(TAA/HEA) was successfully fabricated, and swelling ability as well as thermal stability was promoted after loading. The results of batch equilibrium experiments indicated that pH and temperature significantly influenced the adsorption process and adsorption of heavy metals was better fitted to Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models. Selectivity of HFO-P(TAA/HEA) towards heavy metals was greatly improved under the calcium ions competition at higher concentration compared to P(TAA/HEA). Competitive adsorption evidenced the priority order in multifold metal species system was Pb2+>Cu2+>Ni2+>Cd2+. What's more, FTIR and XPS analyses manifested that heavy metals might mainly be adsorbed via inner sphere complexation. These findings revealed that hydrogel HFO-P(TAA/HEA) is a potential adsorption material to remove the heavy metals from polluted water.
Highly selective and efficient Pb2+ capture using PO4-loaded 3D-NiFe layer double hydroxides derived from MIL-88A

Abstract:Lead (Pb) contamination in water requires improved decontamination technologies. The addition of phosphate to precipitate Pb2+ is a widely used method for remediating Pb in soil and water, though it has certain limitations. This study focuses on novel 3D mesoporous layered double hydroxide (LDH) sorbents functionalized with phosphate anions for Pb2+ removal from contaminated waters. Our innovative strategy involves converting a sacrificial template metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) structure (MIL-88A(Fe)) into NixFe LDH, followed by an anion exchange reaction with phosphate anions. This process preserves the 3D microrod architecture of MIL-88A and prevents deleterious LDH particle aggregation. The synthesis results in stable microrod crystals, 1-2 μm long, composed of 3D assemblies of NixFe-PO4 LDH nanoplatelets with a specific surface area exceeding 110 m2/g. The novel LDH materials display fast adsorption kinetics (pseudo-second order model) and remarkably high Pb2+ removal performances (Langmuir isotherm model) with a capacity of 538 mg/g, surpassing other reported adsorbents. LDH-PO4 exhibits high selectivity for Pb2+ over competing ions like Ni2+ and Cd2+ (selectivity order is: Pb2+ > Ni2+ > Cd2+). Removal of Pb2+ from NixFeLDH/88A-PO4 involves various mechanisms, including surface complexation and surface precipitation of lead phosphate or lead hydroxide phases as revealed by structural characterization techniques.

Abstract:Chondrocyte and cartilage matrix can in the course of time lose in quality due to nutritive, toxic and enzymatic influences but also due to excessive mechanical usage so that the hyaline articular cartilage can no longer fulfill its function as a hydro-elastic bumper. This results in progressive mechanical cartilage destruction and sclerosing reconstruction of the subchondral bone. The parts of the matrix that are freed by the mechanical abrasion can function as inflammatory mediators and set an accompanying synovitis going. It is this secondary synovitis that then leads to a painful manifestation of osteoarthritis. In this case, an antiphlogistic therapy is necessary, because during a secondary synovitis cytokines are set free that endanger the yet intact articular cartilage.

Abstract:The effective and selective removal of heavy metal ions from sewage is a major challenge and is of great significance to the treatment and recovery of metal waste. Herein, a novel magnetic lignin-based adsorbent L@MNP was synthesized by a thiol-ene click reaction under ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation. Multiple characterization techniques, including Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), elemental analysis, vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), confirmed the formed nano-morphology and structure of L@MNP. The effects of pH, contact time, initial metal concentration and temperature on the batch adsorption of Pb(ii) by L@MNP were investigated. Due to the existence of sulfur and oxygen-containing sites, the maximum adsorption capacity of L@MNP for Pb(ii) could reach 97.38 mg g-1, while the adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 30 min. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms were well described by the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model, respectively, suggesting a chemical and monolayer adsorption process. In addition, L@MNP showed a high adsorption selectivity (k Pb = 0.903) toward Pb(ii) in the presence of other co-existing metal ions. The experimental results also revealed that L@MNP displayed structural stability, ease of recovery under an external magnetic field, and acceptable recyclability after the fifth cycle. Considering its facile preparation, low cost and high adsorption efficiency, the developed L@MNP adsorbent demonstrated great potential in removing heavy metal ions from wastewater.

Abstract:Heavy metals pose a serious threat and damage to ecological health when released into the environment. n-HFP is usually used to remediate soils contaminated with heavy metals, but its ability to solidify heavy metals is limited. FA has good ability to trap heavy metals due to its abundant oxygen-containing functional groups. However, the solubility of FA in water limits its application in the field of heavy metal removal. In this paper, n-HFP@FA was prepared by co-precipitation method. Through FT-IR and BET analysis, the oxygen-containing functional groups and specific surface area of n-HFP@FA increased due to the addition of FA. The adsorption behaviour of n-HFP@FA on Pb, Cd, and Cu followed the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm models. In addition, the maximum adsorption capacities of n-HFP@FA for Pb, Cd, and Cu were 371.1, 190.5, and 129.75 mg/g, respectively. As shown by FT-IR and XPS analysis, the main mechanisms of Pb, Cd and Cu removal by n-HFP@FA are: complexation, electrostatic and precipitation. The n-HFP@FA showed high removal rates of Pb, Cd, and Cu in soil leachates of different pH. In the soil remediation experiments, the BCR method and Pearson correlation analysis showed that the acid-soluble, reducible and oxidizable fractions of Pb, Cd, and Cu in the soil were effectively converted into a more stable residual fraction. This study opens up a prospect for the application of n-HFP@FA composites in the remediation of contaminated soil. GRAPHICAL

Abstract:Lead (Pb) as one of the most widespread toxic heavy metals in both water distribution systems and in surface water, it still remains a challenge to quickly and completely remove/recycle Pb ions from these systems. Herein, the obtained Mg2Fe-mixed metal oxides (Mg2Fe-MMO) through calcination of Mg2Fe-Cl-layered double hydroxide (Mg2Fe-Cl-LDH) showed extremely high mineralized capacity for Pb ions with removal figures of 2406 mg/g. This performance is superior to most reported materials, and can rapidly purify Pb2+ at 1 ppm to safe levels (12 ppb). X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) studies revealed a transformation from MgFe-MMO to defective Mg2Fe-CO3-LDH with the Pb ions sequestering OH− from Mg2Fe-CO3-LDH to form a solid precipitate. Moreover, the mineralized products could be recycled by electrolysis to obtain metallic lead, providing a new opportunity for pollution remediation and the recovery of metal lead. This work provides a new route for Pb ions removal from wastewater and the potential for utilization of the recycled Pb resource.

Abstract:In the work, we employed a hydrothermal method for modification of red mud using colloidal silica and sodium hydroxide under mild conditions, and applied it into adsorbing Pb(II) ions in aqueous solutions. In the modification, zeolite structure was formed. The adsorption experiments found that the adsorption capacity of the modified red mud for Pb(II) ions was significantly improved, almost 10 times as much as that of the original red mud. Both the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic equation can describe the adsorption process, indicating it a more complicated interaction. Langmuir and Dubinin–Radushkevich models well fit the adsorption isotherm, indicating that the modified red mud mainly removes lead ions from aqueous solution by monolayer physical adsorption. According to the fitting results, the saturated adsorption capacity of Pb (II) by the modified red mud is 551.11 mg/g, confirming its high efficiency adsorption performance. XRD, FTIR, XPS and SEM-EDS all detected the formation of PbCO3 and Pb3(CO3)2(OH)2. It was speculated that the adsorption mechanism should be attributed to the joint contribution of ion exchange and precipitation. The excellent performance of the modified red mud on Pb(II) ions adsorption makes it a promising candidate for the treatment of wastewater contaminated by heavy metal ions.

Abstract:In order to remove Pb(II), Ni(II) and Mn(II) from aqueous solution, a lignin-based composite hydrogel (LS-g-P(AA-co-AM)/OMMT) was synthesized by free radical polymerization using sodium lignosulfonate (LS) and organic montmorillonite (OMMT) as raw materials. The obtained hydrogels were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed that the LS-g-P(AA-co-AM)/OMMT contains abundant C and O containing surface groups, which were favorable for the adsorption of Pb(II), Ni(II), Mn(II). The effects of adsorbent dosage, solution pH, temperature, initial concentration and time on hydrogel adsorption of Pb(II), Ni(II) and Mn(II) were investigated. The maximum adsorption amounts were 575.5, 326.67 and 282.82 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption process of heavy metal ions conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir model, which indicates that the adsorption of Pb(II), Ni(II) and Mn(II) by LS-g-P(AA-co-AM)/OMMT is a monolayer adsorption process dominated by chemical adsorption. The main adsorption mechanisms are ion exchange and coordination complexation. Conclusively, the prepared biomass adsorbent was proved as promising adsorbents for the removal of heavy metals.

Abstract:Strategies for reducing cadmium (Cd) content in polluted farmland soils are currently limited. A type of composite with nanoparticles incorporated into a hydrogel have been developed to efficiently remove heavy metals from sewage, but their application in soils faces challenges, such as organic hydrogel degradation due to oxygen exposure and slow Cd2+ release from soil constituents. To overcome these challenges, a composite with superior stability for long-term application in soil is required. In this study, ferrous sulfide (FeS) hydrogel composites were developed. The lignin-based hydrogels inherited lignin's natural mechanical and environmental stability and the FeS nanoparticles efficiently adsorbed Cd2+ and enhanced Cd2+ desorption from soils by producing H+. The high sorption capacity (833.3 g kg−1) of the composite was attributed to four proposed mechanisms, including cadmium sulfide (CdS) precipitation via chemical reaction (84.06%), lignin complexation (13.19%), hydrogel swelling (0.61%), and nanoparticle sorption (2.15%). In addition, Fe2+ displaced from the composite was gradually oxidized to form solid iron oxide hydroxide, which increased Cd2+ sorption. The composite significantly reduced the total, surfactant-soluble, and fixed Cd in heavily and lightly polluted paddy soils by 22.4–49.6%, 13.5–68.6%, and 40.1–16.6%, respectively, in 7 days.

Abstract:Abstract The effective and selective removal of heavy metal ions from sewage is a major challenge, and of great significance to the treatment and recovery of metal waste. Herein, a novel magnetic lignin-based adsorbent L@MNP was synthesized by thiol-ene click reaction under UV light irradiation. Multiple characterization techniques containing FT-IR, XRD, elemental analysis, VSM, SEM and TEM confirmed the formed nano-morphology and structure of L@MNP. Effects of pH, contact time, initial metal concentration and temperature on the batch adsorption of Pb(II) by L@MNP were investigated. Due to the existence of sulfur and oxygen containing sites, the maximum adsorption capacity of L@MNP for Pb(II) could reach 97.38 mg/g, while the adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 30 min. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms were well described by the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model, respectively, suggesting a chemical and monolayer adsorption process. In addition, L@MNP showed a high adsorption selectivity ( k Pb = 0.903) toward Pb(II) in the presence of other co-existing metal ions. Experimental results also revealed that L@MNP displayed structural stability, easy recovery under external magnetic field, and acceptable recyclability after the fifth cycle. Considering its facile preparation, low cost and high adsorption efficiency, the developed L@MNP adsorbent demonstrated great potential in removing heavy metal ions from wastewater.
Selective lead capture using amide-containing COFs: A novel strategy for efficient soil remediation

Abstract:A critical consideration in the application of phytoremediation to remediate sludge soil contaminated with heavy metals is the potential for leaching risks that prevail prior to the efficient uptake of these metals by plants. The most cost-effective method is to use heavy metal stabilizers with selective adsorption. A novel amide-based COF material (COF-TH) has been synthesized as a heavy metal stabilizer for Pb. COF-TH exhibits significant selectivity for Pb in five-metal-mixed solutions, with a distribution coefficient KD as high as 3279 mL·g-1, which was more than 7.3 times that of other heavy metals. The maximum adsorption capacity of COF-TH for Pb was 189 mg·g-1. The adsorption fitted Langmuir model and intra-particle diffusion model, and satisfied pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The excellent selectivity and adsorption performance originate from the complexation between abundant amide groups and Pb ions. Pot experiments and leaching assays confirm that COF-TH decreased Pb leachate concentrations by 77.8 % without significantly decreasing total phytoextracted amounts of other heavy metals, due to the high selectivity of COF-TH to Pb. Additionally, its positive impact on plant growth and microbial diversity makes it a promising soil remediation agent. This investigation offers a novel approach to mitigate the leaching risk of a specific heavy metal Pb during sludge land application by integrating soil phytoremediation with stabilization techniques.
Recyclable hydrogel-MOFs composite beads for selective removal of Pb(II) from water

Abstract:Lead ions (Pb 2+ ) as a typical toxic contaminant in the water resources cause health risk. In order to selectively remove Pb 2+ from water, a novel adsorptive composite bead was prepared via introducing different functional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into alginate (Alg) hydrogel. The hydrogel-MOFs composite beads possessed the excellent adsorption towards Pb 2+ . The sulfonic-functionalized A-U6S composite beads showed the best adsorption performance of Pb 2+ with the adoption capacity of 400.5 mg g -1 among three tested hydrogel-MOFs composite beads due to the specific affinity between Pb 2+ and -SO 3 H. The Langmuir adsorption and pseudo-second-order kinetic models validated that Pb 2+ was adsorbed by A-U6S in the manner of monolayer chemisorption on the surface of A-U6S composite beads. The thermodynamics study indicated that the interaction between A-U6S and Pb 2+ was spontaneous and endothermic. Meanwhile, A-U6S showed higher adsorption capacity of Pb 2+ in the coexistence of Cu 2+ , Cd 2+ , Zn 2+ and Ca 2+ , exhibiting excellent selective adsorption towards Pb 2+ . The selectivity factors of Pb 2+ versus Cu 2+ , Cd 2+ , Zn 2+ , and Ca 2+ were 5.4, 5.7, 6.1 and 9.1. A-U6S composite beads can be reused five times with stable adsorption ability towards Pb 2+ and till reached 94.2% of pristine adsorption capacity. Moreover, UiO-66(SO 3 H) powder can be collected and recycled after degradation of Alg by H 2 O 2 solution. The functionalized hydrogel-MOFs composite beads and the strategy for reuse and recycle of composite materials by the present study have great potential for practical applications in water purification treatment.
