Abstract:Adsorption is an effective approach for elimination of phosphorus from wastewater. Nevertheless, the environmental impact of adsorbent materials, the difficulty of recycling, and unsatisfactory utilization efficiency for disused adsorbents are still the limitations of adsorbent development and utilization. Herein, a novel polysaccharide-based composite hydrogel (HBPEC/SA/lignin hydrogel) containing 2-hydroxy-3-butoxypropyl hydroxyethyl cellulose (HBPEC), sodium alginate (SA) and lignin, designed for phosphorus and enhanced Cu2+ removal. The adsorption was pH dependent and was not affected significantly by co-existing anions (Cl- NO3 - and SO42-) except HCO3 (-). Interestingly, the captured phosphorus facilitated the adsorption of Cu2+, the Cu2+ adsorption capability increased from 10.49 to 14.51 mg Cu/g by P-loaded adsorbent compared with adsorbent without P loaded. Particularly, the adsorbent achieved quick desorption due to its thermoresponsive. The shrunken hydrogel could be desorbed with only small amount of eluent and showed relatively high desorption efficiency. Altogether, HBPEC/SA/lignin hydrogel exhibited appealing application prospects in wastewater treatment.
Dual-functional lignin-based hydrogels for sustained release of agrochemicals and heavy metal ion complexation

Abstract:An effective way of improving the efficiency of agrochemicals and improving crop yield and quality is by slow or sustained release, which is conducive to environmental protection. Meanwhile, the excessive amount of heavy metal ions in soil can create toxicity in plants. Here, we prepared lignin-based dual-functional hydrogels containing conjugated agrochemical and heavy metal ligands through free-radical copolymerization. The content of the agrochemicals (including plant growth regulator 3-indoleacetic acid (IAC) and herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (DCP)) in the hydrogels were tuned by changing the hydrogel composition. The conjugated agrochemicals could slowly release through the gradual cleavage of the ester bond. As a result of the release of the DCP herbicide, the growth of lettuce was effectively regulated, thus confirming the feasibility and effectiveness of this system in application. At the same time, due to the presence of metal chelating groups (such as COOH, phenolic OH, and tertiary amine) the hydrogels could act as adsorbents or stabilizers towards heavy metal ions for improving the soil remediation and preventing the adsorption of these toxic metals by plant roots. Specifically, Cu(II) and Pb(II) could be adsorbed >380 and 60 mg/g, respectively.
Effective removal of heavy metals from water using porous lignin-based adsorbents

Abstract:Multifunctional composite materials are the key to improving removal capacity and environmental utility. Here, the adsorbent (SLCA) was obtained by free-radical polymerization of acrylic acid with sodium lignosulfonate and citric acid. FTIR, SEM, TGA and XPS characterization methods were used to prove the structure and properties of SLCA adsorbents. The maximum uptake capacities of the optimized SLCA adsorbent is 276 mg g−1 of Cu2+ and 323 mg g−1 of Pb2+, respectively. The Langmuir isotherm and the second-order kinetic model were established to illustrate that the capture of Cu2+ and Pb2+ by the adsorbent belongs to chemisorption on the monolayer. XPS analysis confirmed that complexation and electrostatic attraction are the mechanism of pollutant removal. Not only that, as-resulting adsorbent revealed no significant adsorption cycle efficiency reduction even after 5 runs of sorption-desorption cycle, manifesting that it is of great stability and could be regarded as a promising candidate adsorbent. The purpose of this research was to develop a green lignin-based adsorbent with strong environmental protection and regeneration ability based on cheap polyacrylic resin.

Abstract:In order to remove Pb(II), Ni(II) and Mn(II) from aqueous solution, a lignin-based composite hydrogel (LS-g-P(AA-co-AM)/OMMT) was synthesized by free radical polymerization using sodium lignosulfonate (LS) and organic montmorillonite (OMMT) as raw materials. The obtained hydrogels were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed that the LS-g-P(AA-co-AM)/OMMT contains abundant C and O containing surface groups, which were favorable for the adsorption of Pb(II), Ni(II), Mn(II). The effects of adsorbent dosage, solution pH, temperature, initial concentration and time on hydrogel adsorption of Pb(II), Ni(II) and Mn(II) were investigated. The maximum adsorption amounts were 575.5, 326.67 and 282.82 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption process of heavy metal ions conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir model, which indicates that the adsorption of Pb(II), Ni(II) and Mn(II) by LS-g-P(AA-co-AM)/OMMT is a monolayer adsorption process dominated by chemical adsorption. The main adsorption mechanisms are ion exchange and coordination complexation. Conclusively, the prepared biomass adsorbent was proved as promising adsorbents for the removal of heavy metals.

Abstract:Strategies for reducing cadmium (Cd) content in polluted farmland soils are currently limited. A type of composite with nanoparticles incorporated into a hydrogel have been developed to efficiently remove heavy metals from sewage, but their application in soils faces challenges, such as organic hydrogel degradation due to oxygen exposure and slow Cd2+ release from soil constituents. To overcome these challenges, a composite with superior stability for long-term application in soil is required. In this study, ferrous sulfide (FeS) hydrogel composites were developed. The lignin-based hydrogels inherited lignin's natural mechanical and environmental stability and the FeS nanoparticles efficiently adsorbed Cd2+ and enhanced Cd2+ desorption from soils by producing H+. The high sorption capacity (833.3 g kg−1) of the composite was attributed to four proposed mechanisms, including cadmium sulfide (CdS) precipitation via chemical reaction (84.06%), lignin complexation (13.19%), hydrogel swelling (0.61%), and nanoparticle sorption (2.15%). In addition, Fe2+ displaced from the composite was gradually oxidized to form solid iron oxide hydroxide, which increased Cd2+ sorption. The composite significantly reduced the total, surfactant-soluble, and fixed Cd in heavily and lightly polluted paddy soils by 22.4–49.6%, 13.5–68.6%, and 40.1–16.6%, respectively, in 7 days.

Abstract:Soil contamination by heavy metals constitutes a serious global environmental problem, and numerous remediation technologies have been developed. In this study, a novel soil remediation agent, namely composite hydrogel (leftover rice-g-poly(acrylic acid)/montmorillonite/Urea, LR-g-PAA/MMT/urea), was prepared based on free radical polymerization cross-linking technology. Experimental results indicated that the LR-g-PAA/MMT/urea dosage increased from 0% to 10%, the oxidizable state proportions of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in contaminated soil increased from 8.3%, 23.7%, 54.0% and 11.4%–71.3%, 61.0%, 76.5%, and 27.9%, respectively. Compared with control experiment, the residue state growth rate were 56.6%, 23.4% and 39.8% for Cu, Pb and Zn respectively with 10% dosage of composite hydrogel. Simultaneously, the LR-g-PAA/MMT/urea was also seen to enhance soil fertility, including organic matter content, cation exchange capacity, and N and P contents. Pot experiments for biological toxicity suggested that the addition of hydrogel weakened the toxic effect of heavy metals on cotton seeds, and the action effect was increasingly visible with the increase of hydrogel dosage. The analysis of the mechanism involved suggested that the organic matter and its possessed characteristic functional groups could weaken the biological toxicity via complexation, adsorption, and ion exchange. Overall, the synthesized composite hydrogel exhibits great potential for the simultaneous remediation and fertility improvement of heavy metal contaminated soil.

Abstract:The presence of heavy metals in aqueous media threatens environmental safety and human health, so it is necessary to effectively remove them from wastewater. Through a simple preparation method, lignin ( LS) and montmorillonite ( MMT) were successfully prepared into efficient biosorbents. The prepared hydrogel not only has water absorption and pH-responsive swelling properties, but also has good removal effect on heavy metals. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cd ( II) ions was 587.14 mg / g. The maximum adsorption capacity of Zn (II) ions was 297.13 mg / g.The results of principal component analysis show that the adsorption process of heavy metals is in good agreement with different kinetic and isotherm models. The adsorption mechanism is proposed, which is related to the chemical properties between adsorbents. This study provides a promising and sustainable lignin-based composite hydrogel.

Abstract:Removing heavy metal ions from water is an important issue to improve water quality. However, using cost-effective and more environmentally friendly adsorbents to achieve efficient adsorption capacity remains a challenge. Carbon spheres were prepared by the hydrothermal method and then combined with sodium lignosulfonate to form a lignosulfonate carbon (C/SL) adsorbent. C/SL achieved the adsorption of Pb2+ and Cu2+ after 60 min (the adsorption capacity was 281 mg g-1 for Pb2+ and 276mg g-1 for Cu2+) and had good selectivity and reusability (5 cycles). The simulated experimental data show that the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm are closer to the actual adsorption. Thermodynamic studies show that the adsorption of Pb2+ and Cu2+ is enhanced by the spontaneous process at higher temperature. This study also shows that functional groups such as hydroxyl and amino groups play an important role in the adsorption process.

Abstract:Cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin are three kinds of biopolymer in lignocellulosic biomass, and the utilization of the three biopolymers to synthesize hydrogel adsorbent could protect the environment and enhance the economic value of the biomass. A novel hydrogel adsorbent was prepared using cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose of wheat straw by a one-pot method, and the adsorbent showed excellent adsorption performance for copper(II) ions. Scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis showed that the prepared straw-biopolymer-based hydrogel had porous structure, and cellulose fibrils had crosslinked with lignin and hemicellulose by poly(acrylic acid) chains. The effects of contact time, initial concentration, and temperature on the copper(II) ion removal using the prepared hydrogels were investigated, and the obtained results indicated that the adsorption kinetics conformed to the pseudo-second-order and Elovich equation models and the adsorption isotherm was in accord with the Freundlich model. The adsorption thermodynamics study indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous and accompanied by heat. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that the adsorption behavior resulted from ion exchange. The prepared hydrogel based on cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin could be used for water treatment and soil remediation because of its high performances of excellent heavy metal ion removal and water retention.

Abstract:Sediment and soil contamination with toxic heavy metals, including cadmium (Cd2+) and lead (Pb2+), represents a major long-term remediation challenge. Resuspension of contaminated sediments into the water column, or the uptake of toxic metals from top soil, can lead to exposure of aquatic or terrestrial organisms, followed by bioconcentration, bioaccumulation and biomagnification, which may pose a threat to public health. We have developed a novel nanoscale engineered material, namely ligand-coated dense nanoparticles (Ligand DNPs), which contain a dense WO(3)nanoparticle core and a shell functionalized with a metal-binding organic ligand (EDTA), to effectively sequester heavy metal ions deeper into the soil and sediments. We demonstrate that one application of Ligand DNPs can remove from 60% to almost 80% of the Cd and Pb in two different soil matrices, driving these metal ions deeper into the sediment or soil column via gravity, and making them less bioavailable. Ligand DNPs can provide a relatively fast, convenient, and efficientin-situapproach for the remediation of sediments and soils contaminated with heavy metals.
Remediation of artificially contaminated soil and groundwater with copper using hydroxyapatite/calcium silicate hydrate recovered from phosphorus-rich wastewater

Abstract:Excessive copper (Cu) in contaminated soil and groundwater has attracted continuous attentions due to the bioaccumulation and durability. In this study, the feasibility of remediation of heavy metal pollution in soil and groundwater was investigated using hydroxyapatite/calcium silicate hydrate (HAP/C-S-H) recovered from phosphorus-rich wastewater in farmland. The results show that the pH has a strong effect on copper removal from Cu-contaminated groundwater but the impact of ion strength on the removal is weak. In general, high pH and low ion strength give better results in copper removal. Kinetic and isotherm data from the study fit well with Pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of HAP/C-S-H (138 mg/g) was higher than that of C-S-H (90.3 mg/g) when pH value, temperature, and ionic strength were 5, 308 K, and 0.01 M, respectively. Thermodynamics results indicate that Cu removal is a spontaneous and endothermic process. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results show that the mechanism of copper removal involves physical adsorption, chemical precipitation and ion exchange. For the remediation of Cu-contaminated soil, 76.3% of leachable copper was immobilized by HAP/C-S-H after 28 d. Acid soluble Cu, the main contributor to biotoxicity, decreased significantly while reducible and residual Cu increased. After immobilization, the acid neutralization capacity of the soil increased and the dissolution of copper was substantially reduced in near-neutral pH. It can be concluded that HAP/C-S-H is an effective, low-cost and eco-friendly reagent for in-situ remediation of heavy metal polluted soil and groundwater.

Abstract:The heavy metal ions contained in industrial wastewater are a great threat to human health. Exploring a adsorbent which have low-cost, green environmental friendly, high adsorption capacity, good recycle is key to solve heavy metal ions pollution. Lignin sulfonate was obtained by treating corn stover, and then modified lignin sulfonate was obtained by hydrothermal method. The porous structure makes heavy metal ions occupy more internal adsorption sites. Modified lignosulfonate adsorbent efficiency removes heavy metals in wastewater especially Cu2+ and Pb2+. The adsorption capacity of Cu2+ on modified lignosulfonate is 450.3 mg g-1, Pb2+ is 475.4 mg g-1. In addition, for 40 mg L-1 Cu2+ and Pb2+ using 0.4 g L-1, the adsorption equilibrium is only reached within 60 min. Meanwhile, the removal ratio of Pb is 83 %, Cd is 72 %, Cu is 87 %, Zn is 36 %, Mn is 25 %, Cr is 95 %, and Fe is 99 % in wastewater using 0.4 g L-1 adsorbent in 2 h. This research develops a practical adsorbent to remove heavy metals from actual wastewater.

Abstract:Hydrogel adsorbents are promising tools for reducing heavy metals' bioavailability in contaminated soil. However, their practical feasibility remains limited by the low stability, inefficient removal efficiency, and potential secondary pollution. Optimizing the adsorption operation and the functional properties of hydrogel adsorbents could eliminate this method's drawbacks. Herein, three innovative in-situ remediation strategies for Pb/Cu-contaminated soil were adopted based on the concept of novel TEMPO-cellulose (TO-NFCs)/lignin/acrylamide@MIL-100(Fe) nanocomposite hydrogel adsorbent (NCLMH). Characteristic analyses revealed ideal Pb/Cu adsorption mechanisms by swelling, complexation, electrical attraction, and ion exchange via carboxyl/hydroxyl/carbonyl groups and unsaturated Fe(III) sites on ANCMH besides FeOOH formation. The highest maximum theoretical adsorption capacities of Pb(II) and Cu(II) on ANCMH were 416.39 and 133.98 mg/g, under pH 6.5, governed by pseudo-second-order/Freundlich models. Greenhouse pot experiments with contaminated soils amended with two-depth layers of 0.5% NCLMHs (SA@NCLMH) displayed a decline in Pb and Cu bioavailability up to 85.9% and 74.5% within 45 d. Soil column studies simulating continuous water soil flushing coupled with NCLMH layers, instead of conventional extractant fluids, and connected to NCLMH-sand column as purification unit (CF@NCLMH) achieved higher removal rates for Pb, and Cu of 89.5% and 77.2% within 24 h. Alternatively, conducting multiple-pulse soil flushing mode (MF@NCLMH) gained the highest Pb and Cu removal of 96.5% and 85.4%, as the water flushing-stop flux events allowed adequate water movement/residence period, promoting Pb/Cu desorption-adsorption from soil to NCLMH. Also, the NCLMH-sand column conducting and easy separation of the stable/reusable NCLMHs prevented the potential secondary pollution. Interestingly, the three remediated soils reached the corresponding regulation of the permissible limits for Pb and Cu residential scenarios in medium-to-heavily agricultural polluted soils, alleviating the Pb/Cu bioaccumulation and phytotoxicity symptoms in cultivated wheat, especially after MF@NCLMH treatment. This study introduces promising alternative remediation strategies with high sustainability and feasibility in acidic-to-neutral heavy metal-contaminated agricultural soil.
A novel chitosan-based hydrogel microspheres for efficient heavy metal-ion adsorption

Abstract:Pb (II) and Cu (II) are the most critical metal ion pollutants commonly found in wastewater, and prolonged exposure to these metal ions can pose serious risks to human health. Therefore, the removal of these pollutants from wastewater is of particular importance. In this study, soy hull nanocellulose/sodium alginate/chitosan (SHNC/SA/CS) hydrogel microspheres were prepared using the ion crosslinking method, and they were used to adsorb Pb (II) and Cu (II) present in wastewater. The SHNC/SA/CS hydrogel microspheres exhibited excellent toughness (18.67 MPa) and hydrophilicity (21.43° ± 0.65°), which improved their reuse rate. Furthermore, hydroxyl, carboxyl and amino groups served as excellent chelating groups and considerably improved the adsorption efficiency of the SHNC/SA/CS hydrogel microspheres. The SHNC/SA/CS hydrogel microspheres exhibited an ultrahigh adsorption rate and an outstanding adsorption capacity for Pb (II) and Cu (II), with an equilibrium adsorption period of 50 min. The equilibrium adsorption capacities for Pb (II) and Cu (II) reached 116.62 and 94.32 mg/g, respectively. Furthermore, the SHNC/SA/CS hydrogel microspheres maintained a removal rate of up to 80 % for Pb (II) and Cu (II) after 10 adsorption–desorption cycles, demonstrating their potential for reuse. The SHNC/SA/CS hydrogel microspheres demonstrated an adsorption performance superior to that reported for CS-based adsorption materials. Moreover, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that the adsorption mechanisms of SHNC/SA/CS hydrogel microspheres for Pb (II) and Cu (II) included ion exchange, pore filling, complexation and electrostatic attraction. Moreover, a synergistic coordination effect existed between carboxyl and amino groups.

Abstract:There are various of abandoned metal mines in China, and a considerable amount of heavy metal contaminated water is generated through water–rock interactions and accumulated within metal mine gallery. Therefore, the effective removal of heavy metals from metal mine gallery effluent holds significant importance. In this study, sulfonated corn stalk (SCS) and acrylic acid was used to prepare the double network hydrogel SCS-gel. The maximum allowable compression force for the SCS-gel was about 3 times than that of raw hydrogel. The SCS-gel exhibited a stable adsorption capacity within the pH range from 2.0 to 6.0. The maximal adsorption capacities of Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ on the SCS-gel were 111.6 and 370.2 mg/g, respectively. The functional groups of –OH, C-O, C = O, COOH, and −SO 3 - were participated in the adsorption process through coordination and electrostatic interactions. The SCS-gel exhibited promising reusability as the adsorption efficiency for Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ remained at approximately 100 % within 10 cycles of adsorption–desorption. The SCS-gel had an excellent removal efficiency for Pb 2+ (99.8 %), Cu 2+ (99.1 %), Mn 2+ (97.4 %), Zn 2+ (98.8 %), and Al 3+ (95.7 %) from actual metal mine gallery effluent by dosage of 5 g/L with the initial concentrations of Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ , Mn 2+ , Zn 2+ , and Al 3+ were 4.352, 29.20, 13.02, 7.016, and 30.47 mg/L, respectively. In the fixed-bed experiments, the Thomas model has a good description for the breakthrough curves of these heavy metals. These results confirmed the possibility of adopting SCS ethers for hydrogel fabrication and verified its great potential for the practical application for the removal of heavy metals from metal mine gallery effluent.

Abstract:Hydrogel is a promising adsorbent for heavy metal removal. In order to conserve the environment by avoiding the hydrogel disposal problem after the adsorption process, this research work was carried out to explore the feasibility in synthesizing biodegradable cellulose hydrogel and cellulose/gelatin composite hydrogel. The effect of cross-linker volume percent and gelatin weight percent towards the adsorption capacity of hydrogels were investigated. Cellulose hydrogel with the lowest cross-linker volume percent, H6 (6 v/v%) has the greatest swelling ability (4650%), highest biodegradability rate (79.5%), and highest adsorption capacity (28.4 mg/g) compared to other cellulose hydrogels. Less compact structure of H6 has the potential to facilitate the movement of Cu2+ ions into the hydrogel network, increased the accessibility of the Cu2+ ions onto the active sites of the hydrogel, and thus enhanced its characteristics and adsorption performance. The addition of gelatin into cellulose hydrogel network has further improved the swelling ability and adsorption capacity of cellulose/gelatin composite hydrogel attributed to the presence of amine group from gelatin which has stronger affinity towards water absorption and presented stronger binding propensity towards Cu2+ ions. The experiment data was fitted better to the Freundlich model, indicating the occurrence of multilayer adsorption. This success of this research study has confirmed the potential application of cellulose hydrogel and cellulose/gelatin composite hydrogel as a more sustainable and environmental-friendly adsorbent for the removal of heavy metal from wastewater.

Abstract:This study investigates the adsorption efficiencies of twelve hydrogel groups, including chitosan, pectin, sodium alginate, cypress, bitter ginseng, dandelion, persimmon leaf, and magnetic hydrogels, for the removal of copper ions, methylene blue, and congo red from aqueous solutions. The hydrogels were characterized using SEM, XRD, XPS, BET, VSM, TGA, FTIR, and DFT calculations to elucidate their structural and functional properties. Adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and mechanisms were thoroughly analyzed, with models fitted to the experimental data. Among the tested hydrogels, pectin-cellulose demonstrated the highest adsorption capacity for copper ions, Phellodendron-polysaccharide-cellulose for methylene blue, and magnetic cellulose-based hydrogels for congo red. This research highlights the potential of these innovative hydrogels as sustainable solutions for wastewater treatment, effectively addressing critical environmental challenges by removing hazardous substances. The findings provide valuable insights into the adsorption processes and contribute to the development of advanced materials for environmental remediation.

Abstract:In order to avoid the secondary pollution of the toxic residue of chemical crosslinking agent accompanied by chemical hydrogel adsorbent and enhance the adsorption performance of physical hydrogel, chitosan/calcium alginate/bentonite (CTS/CA/BT) composite physical hydrogel was constructed. The formation mechanism and structure of the composite hydrogel were determined by FTIR, XRD and SEM. Adsorption performances of the hydrogel toward Pb2+, Cu2+ and Cd2+ in water under different condition as well as multi-ion competitive sorption were investigated. The adsorption processes were described with the canonical adsorption kinetics and isotherms models. With the utilization of XPS analysis and adsorption thermodynamics analysis, it was found that the adsorptions were spontaneous physico-chemical adsorptions. The results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of the hydrogel for Pb2+, Cu2+ and Cd2+ reached up to 434.89, 115.30 and 102.38 mg·g−1, respectively, better than those of other physical hydrogels or chitosan/bentonite composite. Moreover, the composite hydrogel improved the collectability of bentonite and showed a good reusability. The modification of bentonite and the formation of hydrogel were completed simultaneously, which greatly simplifies the operation process compared with the prior similar works. These suggest that the CTS/CA/BT composite hydrogel has promising application prospects for removal of heavy metal ions from water.

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) pollution in paddy soil has caused serious harm to human health. Nano-ferrous hydrogel () composites could be an ideal material for paddy soil Cd removal due to the excellent adsorption performance and mechanical strength. But the 's performance in a paddy field remains unclear. In this study, was applied to a Cd-contaminated paddy field when planting water spinach ( Ipomoea aquatica Forssk). The results showed that effectively removed Cd from the soil (37.6 %) and water spinach (34.5 %) after 30 days. The concentrations of Pb, Zn, Cu, and other metals in soil and water spinach were co-reduced. When the dosage was 30 g·m −2 , the effective functional distance was within 30 cm. application had a positive effect on soil nutrients. The soil nitrogen and organic matter contents increased by 16.1 % and 13.8 %, respectively. No significant effect on soil total phosphorus and potassium contents was presented. The survival rate of zebrafish in the acute toxicity test of was 98.9 %, indicating its biosafety. In addition, application decreased soil microbial community diversity probably due to the decreased pH. The microbial metabolism tended to enhance, suggesting a restoration of soil microbial community function after Cd removal.
