Abstract:Based on linear elastic fracture mechanics and the scaled boundary finite element method(SBFEM),numerical simulation was performed for a mixed-mode crack propagation model.From comparing the results with which obtained by the nonlinear finite element method(NFM),SBFEM can predict crack trajectories and compute lod-displacement relations as well as load-deflection at loading point accurately and efficiently.

Abstract:This paper presents an improved treatment for those advanced FEMs that use stresses in the crack-tip element for evaluation crack propagation condition. We show that the common treatment of obtaining crack-tip displacements using simple interpolation from the edge of the crack-tip element is inaccurate and is responsible for the jagged jump and unwarping behavior (JJU) frequently reported in literature. In this study we propose a more accurate treatment by introducing an element node with independent degree of freedom (DoF) to enrich the crack-tip element. We show that the proposed approach can relieve the stiffness overestimation of the crack-tip element without disrupting the standard element interpolation process. Results of numerical examples demonstrate that the improved treatment can greatly improve the stress shielding phenomenon and effectively reduce the JJU in load-displacement curves.
The Applied Study of the Element Free Galerkin Method to Crack Propagation

Abstract:In this paper,element-free Galerkin method is adopted.The transmission rules are used to solve the problem of crack discontinuance.J-integral method and the contour integral method are employed in calculating stress intensity factors individually.As a result,the displacement and stress fields of the finit plates with single edge cracks and single inclined edge crack as well as the crack tip stress intensity factors have been successfully derived,and also,the track of crack propagation has been realized.
Finite Element Modelling of Complex 3D Static and Dynamic Crack Propagation by Embedding Cohesive Elements in Abaqus

Abstract:This study proposes an algorithm of embedding cohesive elements in Abaqus and develops the computer code to model 3D complex crack propagation in quasi-brittle materials in a relatively easy and efficient manner. The cohesive elements with softening traction-separation relations and damage initiation and evolution laws are embedded between solid elements in regions of interest in the initial mesh to model potential cracks. The initial mesh can consist of tetrahedrons, wedges, bricks or a mixture of these elements. Neither remeshing nor objective crack propagation criteria are needed. Four examples of concrete specimens, including a wedge-splitting test, a notched beam under torsion, a pull-out test of an anchored cylinder and a notched beam under impact, were modelled and analysed. The simulated crack propagation processes and load-displacement curves agreed well with test results or other numerical simulations for all the examples using initial meshes with reasonable densities. Making use of Abaqus’s rich pre/postprocessing functionalities and powerful standard/explicit solvers, the developed method offers a practical tool for engineering analysts to model complex 3D fracture problems.

Abstract:In order to explain the size effect for materials in the scale of micron meters, the strain gradient theory was developed. There is hard strain gradient which affects the microcosmic crack behavior in the crack tip. The element free Galerkin method (EFGM) has advantages in solving crack problems, requiring no remeshing. However the traditional element free method didn’t consider the influence of couple stress in solving problems. In this paper we calculate the stress concentration factor of crack tip with EFGM based on the couple stress theory, and analyze the influence of couple stress on the stress field in crack tip. The result shows the feasibility and efficiency of the method.

Abstract:A numerical method and its implementation in ABAQUS using X?FEM to analyze multiple crack propa?gation was studied. The displacement discontinuity was approximated by appending enriched items to standard field. We give the initial cracks in the form of point?set or curve functions and dispersed them to the element nodes using Level Set Method ( LSM) . LSM was also used to track crack propagation paths. The local level set update technique was used to reduce the computing scale and the Judgmental Approach has been improved. The display of the process of crack propagation was realized using the commercial software Tecplot. Interaction integral technique was used to calculate mixed mode stress intensity factors. The maximal circumferential stress criterion was used to calculate the kinking angles of the propagating cracks. Influence of mesh and integral zone on simulation results were taken into consideration. Numerical examples were presented to demonstrate the benefits of the proposed implementation.
An Accurate and Efficient Augmented Finite Element Method for Arbitrary Crack Interactions

Abstract:This paper presents a new augmented finite element method (A-FEM) that can account for path-arbitrary, multiple intraelemental discontinuities with a demonstrated improvement in numerical efficiency by two orders of magnitude when compared to the extended finite element method (X-FEM). We show that the new formulation enables the derivation of explicit, fully condensed elemental equilibrium equations that are mathematically exact within the finite element context. More importantly, it allows for repeated elemental augmentation to include multiple interactive cracks within a single element without additional external nodes or degrees of freedom (DoFs). A novel algorithm that can rapidly and accurately solve the nonlinear equilibrium equations at the elemental level has also been developed for cohesive cracks with piecewise linear traction-separation laws. This efficient new solving algorithm, coupled with the mathematically exact elemental equilibrium equation, leads to dramatic improvement in numerical accuracy, efficiency, and stability when dealing with arbitrary cracking problems. The A-FEM's excellent capability in high-fidelity simulation of interactive cohesive cracks in homogeneous and heterogeneous solids has been demonstrated through several numerical examples.

Abstract:<p>In this paper, a novel numerical method called field-enriched finite element method is proposed to investigate stress intensity factor, initiation angle and the propagation path of interface crack. The features of the field-enriched finite element method are: (1) re-meshing is avoided during the process of crack propagation; (2) the physical position of crack can be located and the influence of crack on the physical field of whole model can be described by enriching the field variables; (3) the fracture criterion can be flexibly embedded in the field-enriched finite element method to predict the initiation angle and propagation path of interface crack. Some numerical examples are used to verify the effectiveness and accuracy of the field-enriched finite element method. The numerical results obtained by the field-enriched finite element method can be consistent with the theoretical solution, experimental observation and other numerical results obtained by traditional finite element method or extended finite element method. Therefore, the field-enriched finite element method can provide a new scheme to deal with the interface crack fracture problems.</p>

Abstract:A high-order extended finite element method based on the spectral element method for the simulation of dynamic fracture is developed. The partition of unity for the discontinuous displacement is constructed by employing p order spectral element. This method shows great advantages in the simulations of moving crack and mixed mode crack. The numerical oscillations are effectively suppressed and the accuracy of computed stress intensity factors and crack path are improved markedly. Furthermore the simulation results show that p -refinement is more effective in improving the stress contour near the crack tip than h -refinement. The well known form of the explicit central difference method is used and the critical time step for this method is investigated. We find that by using lumped mass matrix the critical time step Δ t c for this high-order extended finite element is almost independent of the crack position.

Abstract:Wave equation method is one of the fundamental techniques for seismic modeling and imaging.In this paper we discuss a rather new numerical method-the Element-Free Method(EFM),which has demonstrated quite successful in elasticity,heat conduction and fatigue crack growth problems.The key point of this method is the absence of elements,which means potential cost savings.Besides,the Moving Least Squares(MLS) approximation in the EFM design leads to high accuracy and smooth derivatives.The basic principle and a simple example of vibrant film are discussed in details in this paper.Finally,some more examples will be given to show the good performance of EFM in seismic modeling and imaging problems.

Abstract:This paper presents an integrated numerical algorithm based on the nonlinear augmented finite element method (N-AFEM) to accurately simulate the arbitrary evolving strong discontinuities (cracks/slip lines) and failure behaviors in geotechnical structures. A novel nonlinear elemental augmentation and condensation scheme was first proposed within the N-AFEM framework, which allows the consideration of nonlinear coupled intra-element cracks without the need of additional nodes or nodal DoFs. Then a modified exponential cohesive zone model (CZM) that considers the coupling effects between tension/compression and shear at the fracture surface was proposed to describe the fracture process of geomaterials. Besides, a nonlinear yielding function based on the Mohr-Coulomb strength theory was introduced into the framework and serves as the fracture initiation criteria for geomaterials. Finally, several benchmark examples were simulated and the predicted results were compared with existing numerical or experimental data to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper presents a new approach to simulate the propagation of elastic and cohesive cracks under mode-I loading based on the vector form intrinsic finite element method. The proposed approach can handle crack propagation without requiring global stiffness matrices and extra weak stiffness elements. The structure is simulated by mass particles whose motions are governed by the Newton's second law. Elastic and cohesive crack propagation are simulated by proposed VFIFE-J-integral and VFIFE-FCM methods, respectively. The VFIFE-J-integral method is based on vector form intrinsic finite element ( VFIFE)and J-integral methods to calculate the stress intensity factors at the crack tips, and the VFIFE-FCM method combines VFIFE and fictitious crack models ( FCM). When the stress state at the crack tip meets the fracture criterion, the mass particle at the crack tip is separated into two particles. The crack then extends in the plate until the plate splits into two parts. The proposed VFIFE-J-integral method was validated by elastic crack simulation of a notched plate, and the VFIFE-FCM method by cohesive crack propagation of a three point bending beam. As assembly of the global stiffness matrix is avoided and each mass particle motion is calculated independently, the proposed method is easy and efficient. Numerical comparisons demonstrate that the present results predicted by the VFIFE method are in agreement with previous analytical, numerical and experimental works.

Abstract:The extended finite element method (X-FEM) is a novel numerical methodology with a great potential for using in multi-scale computation and multi-phase coupling problems. The algorithm is discussed and a program is developed based on X-FEM for simulating mixed-mode crack propagation. The maximum circumferential stress criterion and interaction integral are deduced. Some numerical results are compared with the experimental data to prove the capability and efficiency of the algorithm and the program. Numerical analyses of sub-interfacial crack growth in bi-materials give a clear description of the effect on fracture made by interface and loading condition.

Abstract:SUMMARYThis study develops an element‐free Galerkin method based on the moving least‐squares approximation to trace three‐dimensional crack propagation under complicated stress conditions. The crack surfaces are modelled by a collection of planar triangles that are added when cracks propagate. The visibility criterion is adopted to treat the screening effect of the cracks on the influenced domain of a Gaussian point. Cracks are assumed to propagate in the perpendicular planes at crack front points when the strain energy release rates reach the material fracture toughness. This method is unique in that it uses a nonlinear contact iterative algorithm to consider contributions of crack surface interaction to the global equilibrium equations, so that crack opening, sliding and closing under complicated stress states can be efficiently modelled. Two numerical examples of three‐dimensional quasi‐static crack propagation were modelled with satisfactory results. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:In this paper, a method of crack propagation analysis based on adaptive extension finite element is proposed. This method combines adaptive mesh reconstruction technology with extended finite element method (XFEM). Firstly, the model of engineering structure is discretized with the help of mesh generation software, and the initial mesh is divided. Secondly, Construction of XFEM model, and the tip of crack strengthening function is introduced to describe the physical field properties of the crack tip. The integral equation is solved to obtain the crack tip parameters. Then, the adaptive mesh reconstruction technology is built to refine the mesh of crack tip area through the error estimation of crack tip. Finally, the SIFs at the crack tip were calculated using the interaction integral, and the path direction of crack growth was determined using the maximum circumferential tensile stress criterion. Thus, the propagation path can be well traced.
An Enhanced Finite Element Method with Separate Mathematical and Physical Mesh(ⅱ): Application in Propagation of Cohesive Crack

Abstract:Basing on separation between mathematical meshes and physical meshes,the enhanced finite element method(FEM++) makes it easy to describe discontinuous deformation.The cohesive zone model(CZM) which can avoid the stress singularity at the crack tip is one of the most effective and simplest model to simulate the interaction within fracture process zone.FEM++ and CZM are applied to simulate the propagation of arbitrary cohesive crack by enriching mathematical node in this paper.The rule of mathematical node enrichment and mathematical element definition are also summarized,and an 8-16 node CZM element is proposed for cohesive crack.At last,three point bending beam is analyzed to illuminate the efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract:The jointed rock mass contains numerous embedded cracks, their propagation have significant impact on the stability of rock mass. However, it is very hard to study the embedded crack propagation through physical experiment. But when using the numerical method, i.e. finite element method, to numerically investigate this problem, the representation of 3D interface and mesh generation with consideration of setting up joint element has been a tough problem. To provide a simple and efficient method for failure analysis of jointed rock mass, the paper employs the 3D element partition method. The 3D element partition method actually develops a four-node contact element by taking advantage of the geometry character of the tetrahedron element. When a fracture cuts through a tetrahedron element, the nodes at different sides of fracture can construct 3 or 4 contact pairs, based on which the stiffness matrix of partitioned element is derived. When using this method, the cracked body can be directly meshed regardless of geometric integrity of jointed rock mass. Thereafter, many tetrahedron elements are intersected by pre-existing fracture. For those intersected element, the partitioned element stiffness matrix is adopted whereas for the rest, the normal element stiffness matrix is adopted. This makes the simulation of jointed rock mass highly simple and efficient. The comparison between the tested and the simulated results of elliptic crack propagation suggests that the present method can capture the features of 3D embedded crack propagation and is effective.

Abstract:It is demonstrated that the eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM) is of remarkable efficiency in simulating crack evolution by eliminating the need for remeshing and refinement. In this paper, it is shown how to enhance the solution efficiency through a comprehensive mathematical investigation of the solution process using XFEM. A typical example is presented to illustrate the disparities in nodal displacements along the two symmetric faces of the crack resulting from the approximation of XFEM. By analysing the structure and components of the global stiffness matrix, the underlying causes of these discrepancies are identified. Building upon these findings, two improvements of the solution are proposed to gain an acceptable accuracy in computing the nodal displacements. The first improvement consists of the subdivision of the enriched elements depending on the characteristic of the distribution of Gauss points. The second improvement is set by determining the optimal number of Gauss points in each sub-element near the crack tip. To calculate the stress intensity factor of the crack under surface pressure, such improvements are applied in conjunction with the interaction integral method, which significantly reduces computational time and eliminates the influence of surface tractions. The numerical solution is validated by comparing it with the analytical solution and the standard XFEM solution. The proposed improvements can enhance both the accuracy of the solution and the computational efficiency of XFEM.

The algorithm is discussed and a code is developed in this paper by using this method for simulating fracture in inhomogeneous materials. The maximum circumferential stress criterion and interaction integral are reviewed briefly. Several numerical examples are presented to prove the capability and efficiency of the algorithm. Numerical analyses of fracture in inhomogeneous materials give a legible description of the effect on cracks made by interfaces. Some numerical results are compared with the analytical solutions.
A Discrete Element Method of Spring-Connecting Rigid for Numerical Simulation of Cracks Propagation

Abstract:A discrete element method considering the force acting effect on multilayer neighbor elements is proposed to solve the problem that the crack growth path is affected greatly by the discrete elements assembling form.The spring stiffness parameters and fracture criterion of the discrete element in the algorithms of one-layer adjacent neighbor search,two-layer adjacent neighbor search and three-layer adjacent neighbor search are derived using the conservation law of strain energy.The crack growth paths of Kalthoff and Winkler's plate dynamic shear test are simulated using different-layer adjacent neighbor searching algorithms.Simulation results show that the effect of the discrete elements assembling form on the crack growth path declines when the layer of adjacent neighbor search increases.The propagation process of crack is less influenced by the elements assembling form in three-layer neighbor searching algorithm,and is in good agreement with the experimental result.The difference of the crack propagating time between two discrete elements assembling forms is only 2 μs.It is concluded that the discrete element method with the three-layer adjacent neighbor searching algorithm is a useful tool for simulating the fracture process.
