Abstract:Aiming at the network access problem when there are Wireless Nodes in industrial control and measurement systems,we designed an EPA standard oriented Gateway interface and corresponding protocol stack.Relying on this protocol stack,each wireless node is represented by a wired EPA device in plant owning to the Gateway.Every device within the system(including wireless one)is indiscriminatingly operated with the same communication specification from system monitor's point of view.

Abstract:A typical wireless sensor network (WSN) consists of a large number of sensor nodes, and is envisioned to support a wide range of applications. As most sensor nodes are operating unattended for a long lifetime, the need for robust software is very important for networked sensor systems. Simulation of networked sensor systems should be an important phase in application development. In this paper, we provide a detailed technical review of sensor network simulators. We not only list existing sensor simulators in the literature, but also summarize each simulator's advantages and disadvantages. Hence, simulator users can benefit from this summarization. We provide a taxonomy of various simulators based on the simulator architecture, the simulated CPU model, radio model, and sensor model. We point out some challenges of sensor network simulation, and summarize some recent techniques to address these challenges. Simulator developers can benefit from these descriptions. Finally, we further highlight some guidelines from both simulator users' perspective and simulator developers' perspective, and give case studies on how to select a simulator.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed the deep integration of embedded systems and wireless networked systems such as computational RFIDs and embedded sensor networks.These systems comprise of tiny embedded chips,low-power radios,and various sensors.They allow for an instrumentation of the physical world at an unprecedented scale and density,thus enabling a new generation of monitoring and control applications.Traditionally,these systems are highly application customized because of their resource constraints.Customized systems have the benefits of easy developments and good performance.They are,however,not a good fit for wide deployments in the future.If these systems were highly application dependent and inflexible to upgrade,our technical innovations will be severely hindered since the replacement of a large number of sensor products take a long time.This situation would be similar to today's Internet where the deployment of a new protocol is not easy.This calls for a software defined architecture.Software-defined network has been a hot research topic for the networking community.Software design for sensor networks has many differences from the Internet.Most importantly,sensor networks are primarily used for information gathering while the Internet is primarily used for information transportation.Moreover,sensors are characterized as resource constrained due to the small form factor,limited battery supply,and low prices.In this article,we focus on the design of software-defined architecture for wireless sensor networks.The technology of traditional software-defined network mainly focuses on how to make the routing behavior software-defined.Software-defined sensor networks focus on not only software-defined routing,but also other aspects such as software-defined sensing.For the design of a generic and efficient softwaredefined sensor network architecture,we first examine some major challenges,e.g.,the design of a generic software-defined architecture,efficient allocation of resources,rapid update and real-time control,maintenance of network consistency,etc.Among these challenges,the design of a generic software-defined architecture for sensor networks is especially important,and it is the basis for controlling the network in a flexible way.The efficient allocation of resources,rapid update and real-time control,and maintenance of network consistency are also key challenges in implementing software-defined sensor network.The challenge of security already exists in traditional sensor networks as well as the Internet.However,how to design a secure and lightweight security mechanism in software-defined sensor network faces new challenges.To address part of the above challenges,we review some useful techniques.Then,we also present a novel taxonomy for software-defined sensor network according to different abstractions of functionalities,including software-defined sensing,software-defined routing,software-defined measurements,software-defined debugging,and others.The purpose of this article is to summarize the current designs in software defined sensor network,so as to explore a larger research space in this direction.In the end,we also summarize some possible future directions,e.g.,the possible combination of wireless reprogramming and remote debugging,and the design of agile programming model.In the future,we believe that a well-designed software-defined sensor network architecture can greatly facilitate software development for deployed networks,allowing rapid technical innovations.

Abstract:Traditional TCP/IP protocol stack is too huge to be used for wireless sensor networks which have very small resources. This paper researched the design of the special TCP/IP protocol stack on the wireless sensor nodes, added the protocol header compression technique, and proposed a new model using two different nodes and a design of the protocol stack. This model uses a new type of node called supernode to translate between the compressed TCP/IP protocol using by the normal nodes and the standard TCP/IP protocol. It can obtain an efficient and seamless connection with the Internet.

Abstract:The success of modular design and architecture has been observed in many fields. For examples, in the world of computer systems, the Von Neumann architecture set forth the fundamentals of modern computers. Equally important in computer networks is the Open System Interconnect (OSI) architecture, where the hierarchy of layers abstracts network functionalities and hides implementation complexities. In the multiple layers of OSI, the physical layer defines the actual waveform being transmitted in communication medium and the conversion of digital information bits (modulation/demodulation). The data link layer provides the abstraction of communication channel where packets are transmitted. The networking layer routes data packets across the network, and the transport layer defines an end-to-end tunnel hiding the complexity of communications from high layers. A related success story is the Internet.

Abstract:Wireless sensor networks are often deployed in public or otherwise untrusted and even hostile environments, which prompts a number of security issues. Although security is a necessity in other types of networks, it is much more so in sensor networks due to the resource-constraint, susceptibility to physical capture, and wireless nature. In this work we emphasize two security issues: (1) secure communication infrastructure and (2) secure nodes scheduling algorithm. Due to resource constraints, specific strategies are often necessary to preserve the network's lifetime and its quality of service. For instance, to reduce communication costs nodes can go to sleep mode periodically (nodes scheduling). These strategies must be proven as secure, but protocols used to guarantee this security must be compatible with the resource preservation requirement. To achieve this goal, secure communications in such networks will be defined, together with the notions of secure scheduling. Finally, some of these security properties will be evaluated in concrete case studies.

Abstract:A summarization of published research achievements about interconnection between wireless sensor networks and transmission control protocol/Internet protocol(TCP/IP) networks is presented.Two different ways to connect wireless sensor networks with TCP/IP networks: proxy architectures and direct TCP/IP architectures for sensor networks are discussed.Investigation shows that the proxy architectures will provide simple access and high security level,while direct TCP/IP architectures have better extensibilities and robustness.Also,based on full analysis,a hybrid approach combined proxy architectures is proposed together with direct TCP/IP architectures to have their respective advantages.

Abstract:Recent advances in wireless sensor networks (WSN) have led to many new protocols specifically designed for different kinds of applications where energy efficiency is an essential consideration. Most of the attention, however, has been given to the medium access control (MAC) protocols since they pay an important role in wireless communications and traditional MAC protocols are not suitable for WSN. This paper tries to survey recent energy efficient MAC protocols for WSN and presents a classification of the various approaches pursued. The four main categories explored in this paper are scheduling based, collision free, contention based, and hybrid schemes. Several energy-efficient MAC protocols are described and discussed under the appropriate category. Moreover, requirements for the MAC layer in WSN are also discussed. The paper concludes with open research issues in the end.

Abstract:The book presents a first systematic approach for the cross layer design in wireless sensor networks, where the optimizations for energy efficiency and application QoS are required. A reference model of the network architecture, Embedded Wireless Interconnect, is firstly concluded from the presented studies, as a potential standardized way of the cross layer design in wireless sensor networks. This architecture is also later extended to large-scale cognitive wireless networks beyond pure wireless sensor networks. `The research in wireless sensor networks is boosted by the embedded system hardware advances and a broad range of potential applications. Wireless offers flexibility. The wirelessly interconnected sensor nodes can revolute our perception of the physical world and ourselves, and closely bound the physical world with the cyber-world. We believe our research is on the right track for harmonizing the relationship between human being and the planet that we are living on. Abstract:Wireless sensor networks(WSN) are a kind of wireless communication network made by a plenty of fixed nodes which have limited energy store and restricted computing and communication ability.Hence,traditional network layer design and network protocol aren’t applicable in WSN.Based on the spirit of traditional network layer design,a new cross-layer network model is proposed.The new model is realized in OPNET in which typical applications of route selection and data collection are simulated.The result shows that new cross-layer model can well describe the function of each layer and make network protocol design more concentrative and synthetical.

Abstract:The definitions of some concepts related to security architecture for computer networks are presented firstly in this paper, and then, a framework is proposed from the aspect of security requirements. Based on the analysis of dependence among security services, a method is presented for classifying and rating network security according to se curity services and mechanisms. After the analysis of security mechanisms in TCP/IP protocol including IPSec and SSL, a protocol layered entity model is presented for implementation of security services and security management. From the aspect of entity unit, all kinds of security technologies are organized into to four layers. The place of security management in the architecture and content of management activities for large networks are described. At the end of this paper, further research directions are pointed about the security architecture.

Abstract:The technology of wireless sensor network is a new direction in the field of information science. With the development of science and technology, in modern life, its application is more and more widely. The technology is usually used for information communication in a wide range of network. Sensor network communication can be completed without interference. But the communication process of sensors in some special interferences, such as high-rise block between the sensor or wireless signal interference in the space, communication between wireless sensor network and control terminal may be interrupted. This paper proposes an efficient, stable self-organizing network protocol algorithm in the situation, to realize self organization and information communication. Using STM32 microcontroller as network nodes, it achieves a low power, high speed, high performance wireless ad hoc network, the node and terminal can form a stable network communication, quality of the network communication can be further improved. And compared with the AODV by using NS2, verified the feasibility of routing protocol in this paper.

Abstract:In this paper we propose wireless sensor network architecture with layered protocols, targeting different aspects of the awareness requirements in wireless sensor networks. Under such a unified framework, we pay special attention to the most important awareness issues in wireless sensor networks: namely dynamic awareness, energy awareness and spatiotemporal awareness. First, we propose the spatiotemporal aware routing protocol for wireless sensor networks, which maintains a constant delivery speed for soft real-time communication. Second, we introduce the time-energy aware aggregation scheme, which increases the degree of aggregation and reduces energy consumption without jeopardizing the end-to-end delay. It is the data aggregation scheme to take the timely delivery of messages as well as protocol overhead into account to adjust aggregation strategies adaptively in accordance with assessed traffic conditions and expected wireless sensor network requirements. Third, we also deal with dynamic awareness by proposing a new communication category based on a lazy-binding concept. The evaluation of this integrated architecture demonstrates its performance composability and its capability to be tailored for applications with different awareness requirements. We believe that the integrated architecture, supporting various kinds of awareness requirements, lays a foundation for overall wireless sensor network.

Abstract:In recent times, there have been a lot of efforts for improving the ossified Internet architecture in a bid to sustain unstinted growth and innovation. A major reason for the perceived architectural ossification is the lack of ability to program the network as a system. This situation has resulted partly from historical decisions in the original Internet design which emphasized decentralized network operations through co-located data and control planes on each network device. The situation for wireless networks is no different resulting in a lot of complexity and a plethora of largely incompatible wireless technologies. The emergence of "programmable wireless networks", that allow greater flexibility, ease of management and configurability, is a step in the right direction to overcome the aforementioned shortcomings of the wireless networks. In this paper, we provide a broad overview of the architectures proposed in literature for building programmable wireless networks focusing primarily on three popular techniques, i.e., software defined networks, cognitive radio networks, and virtualized networks. This survey is a self-contained tutorial on these techniques and its applications. We also discuss the opportunities and challenges in building next-generation programmable wireless networks and identify open research issues and future research directions.
