Abstract:The main goal of wireless sensor networks is to collect information from the target environment through a large number of micro sensor nodes. However, the constrained resource on each senor node brings great challenges to the information processing procedure in sensor networks. An overview and some open issues of the intelligent information processing approaches in wireless sensor networks are given in this paper to meet these challenges, which include in-network data aggregation and data compression algorithms, distributed database storage and query strategies, and multi-sensor data fusion rules. The advantages and disadvantages of every approach are also discussed.

Abstract:A typical wireless sensor network (WSN) consists of a large number of sensor nodes, and is envisioned to support a wide range of applications. As most sensor nodes are operating unattended for a long lifetime, the need for robust software is very important for networked sensor systems. Simulation of networked sensor systems should be an important phase in application development. In this paper, we provide a detailed technical review of sensor network simulators. We not only list existing sensor simulators in the literature, but also summarize each simulator's advantages and disadvantages. Hence, simulator users can benefit from this summarization. We provide a taxonomy of various simulators based on the simulator architecture, the simulated CPU model, radio model, and sensor model. We point out some challenges of sensor network simulation, and summarize some recent techniques to address these challenges. Simulator developers can benefit from these descriptions. Finally, we further highlight some guidelines from both simulator users' perspective and simulator developers' perspective, and give case studies on how to select a simulator.

Abstract:A Large-scale Wireless Sensor Network (LWSN). such as an environment monitoring system deployed in a city, could yield data on the order of petabytes each year. Storage and computation of such vast quantities of data pose difficult challenges to the LWSN, particularly because sensors are highly constrained by their scarce resources. Distributed storage and parallel processing are solutions that deal with the massive amount of data by utilizing the collective computational power of the large number of sensors, all while keeping inter-node communication minimized to save energy. In this chapter, we conduct a survey on the state-of-the-art of distributed storage and parallel processing in LWSNs. We will focus on the LWSN scenario in which vast amounts of data are collected prior to intensive computation on that data. We argue that current research results in this direction fall into three categories: 1) hierarchical system architecture to support parallel and distributed computation; 2) distributed data aggregation and storage strategies; 3) parallel processing, scheduling and programming methods. We highlight some important results for each of these categories and discuss existing problems and future directions.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed the deep integration of embedded systems and wireless networked systems such as computational RFIDs and embedded sensor networks.These systems comprise of tiny embedded chips,low-power radios,and various sensors.They allow for an instrumentation of the physical world at an unprecedented scale and density,thus enabling a new generation of monitoring and control applications.Traditionally,these systems are highly application customized because of their resource constraints.Customized systems have the benefits of easy developments and good performance.They are,however,not a good fit for wide deployments in the future.If these systems were highly application dependent and inflexible to upgrade,our technical innovations will be severely hindered since the replacement of a large number of sensor products take a long time.This situation would be similar to today's Internet where the deployment of a new protocol is not easy.This calls for a software defined architecture.Software-defined network has been a hot research topic for the networking community.Software design for sensor networks has many differences from the Internet.Most importantly,sensor networks are primarily used for information gathering while the Internet is primarily used for information transportation.Moreover,sensors are characterized as resource constrained due to the small form factor,limited battery supply,and low prices.In this article,we focus on the design of software-defined architecture for wireless sensor networks.The technology of traditional software-defined network mainly focuses on how to make the routing behavior software-defined.Software-defined sensor networks focus on not only software-defined routing,but also other aspects such as software-defined sensing.For the design of a generic and efficient softwaredefined sensor network architecture,we first examine some major challenges,e.g.,the design of a generic software-defined architecture,efficient allocation of resources,rapid update and real-time control,maintenance of network consistency,etc.Among these challenges,the design of a generic software-defined architecture for sensor networks is especially important,and it is the basis for controlling the network in a flexible way.The efficient allocation of resources,rapid update and real-time control,and maintenance of network consistency are also key challenges in implementing software-defined sensor network.The challenge of security already exists in traditional sensor networks as well as the Internet.However,how to design a secure and lightweight security mechanism in software-defined sensor network faces new challenges.To address part of the above challenges,we review some useful techniques.Then,we also present a novel taxonomy for software-defined sensor network according to different abstractions of functionalities,including software-defined sensing,software-defined routing,software-defined measurements,software-defined debugging,and others.The purpose of this article is to summarize the current designs in software defined sensor network,so as to explore a larger research space in this direction.In the end,we also summarize some possible future directions,e.g.,the possible combination of wireless reprogramming and remote debugging,and the design of agile programming model.In the future,we believe that a well-designed software-defined sensor network architecture can greatly facilitate software development for deployed networks,allowing rapid technical innovations.

Abstract:Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have recently gained a lot of attention by scientific community. Small and inexpensive devices with low energy consumption and limited computing resources are increasingly being adopted in different application scenarios including environmental monitoring, target tracking and biomedical health monitoring. In many such applications, node localization is inherently one of the system parameters. Localization process is necessary to report the origin of events, routing and to answer questions on the network coverage,assist group querying of sensors. In general, localization schemes are classified into two broad categories: range-based and range-free. However, it is difficult to classify hybrid solutions as range-based or range-free. In this paper we make this classification easy, where range-based schemes and range-free schemes are divided into two types: fully schemes and hybrid schemes. Moreover, we compare the most relevant localization algorithms and discuss the future research directions for wireless sensor networks localization schemes.

Abstract:In this paper, a new interface is developed in detail that provides terminal users with ways for direct and convenient interactions with the wireless sensor networks (WSNs). It also embraces an Internet based subsystem for remote monitoring and controlling of the WSNs. Different from existing platforms and interfaces, our design is general, extensible and not constrained for specific applications. More importantly, it paves the way for improving the data processing efficiency and avoiding data execution congestion. It proposes the idea utilizing the advantages of existing professional mathematical software tools, such as Matlab, Mathematica and Maple, to process the WSN data.

Abstract:The proliferation of networked embedded devices such as wireless sensors ushers in an entirely new class of computing platforms. We need new ways to organize and program them. Unlike existing platforms, systems such as sensor networks are decentralized, embedded in physical world, and interact with people. In addition to computing, energy and bandwidth resources are constrained and must be negotiated. Uncertainty, both in systems and about the environment, is a given. Many tasks require collaboration among devices, and the entire network may have to be regarded as a processor. We argue that the existing node-centric programming of embedded devices is inadequate and unable to scale up. We need new service architectures, inter-operation protocols, programming models that are resource-aware and resource-efficient across heterogeneous devices that can range from extremely limited sensor motes to more powerful servers. I will supplement these discussions with concrete examples arising from our own work and the work of others.

Abstract:Localization is an important aspect in the field of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) that has developed significant research interest among academia and research community. Wireless sensor network is formed by a large number of tiny, low energy, limited processing capability and low-cost sensors that communicate with each other in ad-hoc fashion. The task of determining physical coordinates of sensor nodes in WSNs is known as localization or positioning and is a key factor in today’s communication systems to estimate the place of origin of events. As the requirement of the positioning accuracy for different applications varies, different localization methods are used in different applications and there are several challenges in some special scenarios such as forest fire detection. In this paper, we survey different measurement techniques and strategies for range based and range free localization with an emphasis on the latter. Further, we discuss different localization-based applications, where the estimation of the location information is crucial. Finally, a comprehensive discussion of the challenges such as accuracy, cost, complexity, and scalability are given.

Abstract:This paper presents a theoretical model of control and communication over wireless sensor and actuator networks (WSANs). We propose two control schemes, a centralized control scheme (CC) in which decisions are made based on global information, and a distributed control scheme (DC) that enables distributed actuators to make decisions locally. Because of global information, CC can obtain optimal control at each step. However, when that information is delivered over lossy wireless channels, it could become unstable. It is demonstrated by simulations that DC could also stabilize the control system analogously with the CC, though with more steps.

Abstract:Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is increasingly popular in the field of micro-environmental monitoring due to its promising capability. However, most systems using WSN for environmental monitoring reported in the literature are developed for specific applications without functions for exploiting user’s data processing methods. In this paper, a new system is designed in detail to perform micro-environmental monitoring taking the advantages of the WSN. The application-oriented hardware working style is designed, and the system platform for data acquisition, validation, processing and visualization is systematically presented. Several strategies are proposed to guarantee the system capability in terms of extracting useful information, visualizing events to their authentic time are also described. Moreover, a web-based surveillance subsystem is presented for remote control and monitoring. In addition, the system is extensible for engineers to carry their own data analysis algorithms. Experimental results are to show the path reliability and real-time characteristics, and to display the feasibility and applicability of the developed system into practical deployment.

Abstract:It is a general trend in computing that computers are becoming ever smaller and more interconnected, and sensor networks - large networks of small, simple devices - represent a logical extreme of this trend. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are attracting an increasing degree of research interest, with a growing number of industrial applications starting to emerge. Two of these applications, personal health monitoring and emergency/disaster recovery, are the focus of the European Commission project ProSense: Promote, Mobilize, Reinforce and Integrate Wireless Sensor Networking Research and Researchers. This hands-on, useful introduction to WSN systems development presents broad coverage of topics in the field, contributed by researchers involved in the ProSense project. Abstract:A wireless sensor network comprises of small sensor nodes each of which consists of a processing device, small amount of memory, battery and radio transceiver for communication. The sensor nodes are autonomous and spatially distributed in an area of investigation. Certain applications and protocols of wireless sensor networks require that the sensor nodes should be aware of their position relative to the sensor network. For it to be significant and to be of value, the data such as temperature, humidity and pressure, gathered by sensor nodes must be ascribed to the relative position from where it was collected. For this to happen, the sensor nodes must be aware of their relative positions. Traditional location finding solutions, such as Global Positioning System, are not feasible for wireless sensor nodes due to multiple reasons. Therefore, new methods, techniques and algorithms need to be developed to solve the problem of location and position estimation of wireless sensor nodes. A number of algorithms and techniques based upon different characteristics and properties of sensor nodes have already been proposed for this purpose. This chapter discusses the basic principles and techniques used in the localization algorithms, categories of these algorithms and also takes a more closer look at a few of the representative localization schemes.

Abstract:Although wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been employed across a wide range of applications, there are very few books that emphasize the algorithm description, performance analysis, and applications of network management techniques in WSNs. Filling this need, Wireless Ad Hoc and Sensor Networks: Management, Performance, and Applications summarizes not only traditional and classical network management techniques, but also state-of-the-art techniques in this area.The articles presented are expository, but scholarly in nature, including the appropriate history background, a review of current thinking on the topic, and a discussion of unsolved problems. The book is organized into three sections. Section I introduces the basic concepts of WSNs and their applications, followed by the summarization of the network management techniques used in WSNs.Section II begins by examining virtual backbone-based network management techniques. It points out some of the drawbacks in classical and existing methods and proposes several new network management techniques for WSNs that can address the shortcomings of existing methods. Each chapter in this section examines a new network management technique and includes an introduction, literature review, network model, algorithm description, theoretical analysis, and conclusion.Section III applies proposed new techniques to some important applications in WSNs including routing, data collection, data aggregation, and query processing. It also conducts simulations to verify the performance of the proposed techniques. Each chapter in this section examines a particular application using the following structure: brief application overview, application design and implementation, performance analysis, simulation settings, and comments for different test cases/scenario configurations.
