Abstract:We measure near-infrared absorption spectra of PbSe quantum dots (QDs) with three sizes (4.5, 5.0, and 5.6nm) doped in UV gel with the concentration of 0.25–1.50mgmL−1 by using an absorption-spectrum method. An empirical formula is proposed to describe the correlation of the first–second absorption-peak wavelengths and QD size. The peak-absorption cross-section is measured as 2.76–3.69×10−16cm2 for 5.6-nm QD, and the absorption coefficient ranges in 0.19–0.59cm−1, both associated with the doping concentration and the QD size. Furthermore, the emission cross-sections are determined by measuring the photoluminescence spectra of QDs and using the McCumber relationship, which depend weakly on both the doping concentration and the QD size. For 5.6-nm QD, the measured peak-emission cross-section is 3.36–4.48×10−16cm2 within the range of experimental doping concentration.

Abstract:Monodisperse CdSe quantum dots were synthesized by TOPO assisted reaction in nonaqueous solution.The samples were characterized using transmission electron microscopy,X-ray powder diffraction,size distribution histograms,UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence spectra.The results indicate that the monodisperse quantum dots exhibit zinc blende(cubic)diffraction patterns and high PL quantum yield.Moreover,the mechanism of formation of zinc blende structure was preliminarily discussed.

Abstract:Dendritic Ag2Se nanostructures are synthesized in a dry environment by UV irradiating the hybrids composed of CdSe quantum dots (QDs) and silver (Ag). UV irradiation on CdSe QDs induces a photooxidation effect on the QD surface and leads to the formation of SeO2 components. Then SeO2 reacts with the Ag atoms in either Ag film or QD layer to produce the Ag2Se. The growth mechanism of Ag2Se dendrites on solid Ag films is explored and explained by a diffusion limited aggregation model in which the QD layer provides enough freedom for Ag2Se motion. Since the oxidation of the CdSe QDs is the critical step for the Ag2Se dendrites formation this dry chemical interaction between QDs and Ag film can be applied in the study of the QD surface chemical properties. With this dry synthesis method, the Ag2Se dendrites can also be facilely formed at the designed area on Ag substrates.

Abstract:In the most common syntheses of colloidal nanocrystal quantum dots (QDs), the size of the particle increases monotonically with reaction time. We have discovered a PbSe QD synthesis whereby size can be easily controlled by varying the side-chains of a secondary phosphine selenide precursor. The reaction runs to completion, and thus a desired QD diameter can be achieved by simply selecting an appropriate secondary phosphine. Quenching of the reaction to select a desired QD size is not required. For different secondary phosphine selenides, measurements of the precursor conversion rate show a direct relationship with final QD size, while P═Se bond strength calculations show an unexpected inverse relationship between QD size and P═Se bond strength. Finally, it is also demonstrated that secondary phosphine selenide precursors can provide an effective route for IV–VI QD syntheses on the large scale.

Abstract:Shell thickness control of core/shell quantum dots (QDs) plays an important role in determining their optical properties as well as the corresponding device performance. PbSe-based core/shell QDs are attractive near-infrared (NIR) light emitters for photonic and optoelectronic applications. We herein report the colloidal synthesis of giant shell PbSe-based core/shell QDs through controllable reactions between preformed PbSe QDs and Cd2+ ions in polar solvents. The preformed PbSe QDs experienced cation-exchange reaction in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), while they underwent epitaxial growth of CdS shell in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The cation exchange of preformed PbSe QDs in DMF result in PbSe/CdSe core/shell QDs with similar size (ca. 6.3 nm) but tunable shell thickness from 0.5 to 2.9 nm. In comparison, the epitaxial growth of preformed PbSe QDs in DMSO produce PbSe/CdS core/shell QDs in DMSO with average core size of ∼5.7 nm but tunable shell thickness from 0.5 to 3.1 nm. These resulting PbSe-based core/shell QDs show tunable photoluminescence emission of 1393–1744 nm for PbSe/CdSe core/shell QDs and 1566–1719 nm for PbSe/CdS core/shell QDs. The cation exchange and epitaxial growth reactions of preformed PbSe QDs were further investigated by comparing the interactions between solvents and cation ions through nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. The interactions between Cd2+ and DMSO are stronger than that of DMF, while the interactions between Pb2+ and DMSO are weaker than that of DMF. Abstract:Synthesis of PbS quantum dots (QDs) with uniform and controllable size is of great importance in realizing functionality manipulation, as well as building advanced devices, and these QDs have been normally synthesized via "bottom-up" colloidal chemistry. However, the problems of complicated techniques and the relative high cost of the "bottom-up" methods still need to be overcome. Herein, we present a facile and cost-effective "top-down" strategy for the production of PbS QDs with controllable sizes and narrow dispersions (4.8% < σ < 7%) based on the sulfuration reaction of highly active lead oxide and oxychloride intermediates. We investigated the two-step reaction mechanism of the QD synthesis. Initially, Pb(OH)Cl undergoes a reaction with oleic acid in the presence of oleylamine as an activator, leading to the formation of active lead oxide/oxychloride intermediates. Notably, this distinctive reaction induces the creation of numerous cracks within the intermediates, thereby augmenting the active sites available for the subsequent sulfuration reactions. In that, the sulfur precursor reacts with the intermediates, resulting in the rapid generation of a substantial number of PbS fragments. Over time, these small fragments undergo "ripening" until reaching the "critical" size threshold. Different from the ones obtained by the traditional "bottom-up" method, our synthesized colloidal QDs exhibit a S-rich surface and are confirmed to be N-type. In addition, size-tunable near-infrared photoluminescence renders these QDs a promising material for various applications.
Evolution of Micro-Structures on PbSe Buffer Layer and Self-Organization of PbTe QDs

Abstract:PbSe single crystal films are grown on cleaved (111) surface of BaF2 substrate by molecular beam epitaxy. The effects of different Se/PbSe flux ratio (Rf) on morphologies of PbSe films are studied. For PbSe film grown without Se vapor, the surface morphology is characterized by 3D islanding. This feature is changed into triangle holes when low Rf is used, and the dimension of triangle holes decreases as Rf increases. Spirals with monolayer (1 ML=0.354 nm) steps are observed at Rf=0.6. The diameters in plane of spirals range from 1 to 3 μm, and the average step spacing within the spirals is 150nm. The reason for evolution of microstructures on PbSe surface is that the Se vapor has played an important role in the strain relaxation, which can change the growth mode of PbSe films. Finally, we demonstrate the self-organization of PbTe QDs on PbSe buffer layer with the spiral features. The PbTe QDs with two-height distribution are observed. The average heights of the two type PbTe QDs are 11 and 23 nm, respectively.

Abstract:Compound semiconductors have been widely applied in the energy field as light-harvesting materials, conducting substrates and other functional parts. Nevertheless, to effectively grow them in various forms toward objective applications, limitations have often been met to achieving high growth rate, simplicity of method and controllability of growing processes simultaneously. In this work, we have grown a uniform CdSe layer on ZnO/CdS nanorod arrays by a novel in situ photo-assisted chemical deposition method. The morphology and quality of the as-formed material could be significantly influenced by tuning the optical parameters of the injected light. Due to the effect of injected light on the key reactions during the growth, a modified natural light with removal of the UV and IR components seems to be more suitable than monochromic light. An efficiency of 3.59% was achieved without any additional treatment, significantly higher than the efficiency of 2.88% of the sample by conventional CBD method under similar conditions with growth rate one order of magnitude higher. In general, the result has suggested its potential importance for other compound materials and opto-electronic devices.

Abstract:Zinc-blende CdSe quantum dots (QDs) encased in six equal (100) facets are synthesized in a noncoordinating solvent. Their monodispersed size, unique facet structure, and single crystallinity render the narrowest ensemble photoluminescence for CdSe QDs (full width at half-maximum being 52 meV). The nucleation stage can selectively form small-size CdSe QDs (≤3 nm) as seeds suited for the growth of cube-shaped QDs by reducing the concentration of cadmium carboxylates (Cd(RCOO)2) as the sole source of ligands. While resulting in poorly controlled nucleation, chloride-ion ligands introduced in the form of soluble CdClx(RCOO)1-x (x = 0.1∼0.2) would thermodynamically stabilize the cadmium-terminated (100) facets yet kinetically accelerate the deposition of selenium ions onto the (100) facets. Results suggest that it is fully feasible to synthesize QDs simultaneously with monodisperse size and surface structure through ligand-controlled nucleation and growth.

Abstract:Synthesis of colloidal nanocrystals of II-VI semiconductor materials has been refined in recent decades and their size dependent optoelectronic properties have been well established. Here we report a facile synthesis of CdSe-CdS core-shell heterostructures using a two-step hot injection process. Red-shifts in absorption and photoluminescence spectra show that the obtained quantum dots have quasi-type-II alignment of energy levels. The obtained nanocrystals have a heterostructure with a large and highly faceted tetrahedral CdS shell grown epitaxially over a spherical CdSe core. The obtained morphology as well as high resolution electron microscopy confirms that the tetrahedral shell have a zinc blende crystal structure. A phenomenological mechanism for the growth and morphology of the nanocrystals is discussed.

Abstract:Localization of exciton wavefunctions away from the inorganicorganic interface is proposed for synthesizing colloidal spheroidal quantum dots (QDs) with an ultranarrow photoluminescence (PL) peak width. This strategy is demonstrated by synthesizing uniform-alloy CdxZn1-xSe and CdxZn1-xSe/ZnSe/ZnS core/shell QDs. For blue-emitting QDs, the ensemble PL full width at halfmaximum (fwhm) reaches 10.2 nm and the corresponding single-dot PL fwhm is 5.2 nm. The ensemble and single-dot PL fwhm values for green-emitting QDs are 16.3 and 9.7 nm, respectively. These record-low PL fwhm values for spheroidal QDs are close to the requirements for ideal displays. To control the composition homogeneity, the synthetic scheme is separated into four consecutive steps, namely, nucleation of monodisperse CdSe core QDs, epitaxial growth of thickness-controlled CdSe/ZnSe core/shell QDs with a low degree of spontaneous alloying, Cu-catalyzed alloying for uniform-alloy QDs, and additional epitaxy of outer ZnSe and ZnS shells onto uniform-alloy CdxZn1-xSe QDs. Among all metal ions tested, copper ions are identified to be the best catalysts for forming uniform-alloy CdxZn1-xSe QDs, which can enter a QD rapidly to initiate alloying and effectively exit a QD after the alloying process under the experimentally feasible conditions.

Abstract:Colloidal lead halide perovskite (LHP) nanocrystals are of interest as photoluminescent quantum dots (QDs) whose properties depend on the size and shape. They are normally synthesized on subsecond time scales through hard-to-control ionic metathesis reactions. We report a room-temperature synthesis of monodisperse, isolable spheroidal APbBr 3 QDs (A=Cs, formamidinium, methylammonium) that are size-tunable from 3 to over 13 nanometers. The kinetics of both nucleation and growth are temporally separated and drastically slowed down by the intricate equilibrium between the precursor (PbBr 2 ) and the A[PbBr 3 ] solute, with the latter serving as a monomer. QDs of all these compositions exhibit up to four excitonic transitions in their linear absorption spectra, and we demonstrate that the size-dependent confinement energy for all transitions is independent of the A-site cation.

Abstract:We introduce stoichiometry control within both core and shell regions of InP/ZnSe/ZnS core/shell/shell quantum dots (QDs) to advance their properties drastically, approaching those of state-of-the-art CdSe-based QDs. The resulting QDs possess near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield, monoexponential decay dynamics, narrow line width, and nonblinking at a single-dot level. Quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) with the InP/ZnSe/ZnS core/shell/shell QDs as emitters exhibit a peak external quantum efficiency of 12.2% and a maximum brightness of >10 000 cd m(-2), greatly exceeding those of the Cd/Pb-free QLEDs reported in literature. These results pave the way toward Cd/Pb-free QDs as outstanding optical and optoelectronic materials.

Abstract:A seed‐mediated heat‐up approach is developed for scalable production of high‐quality CdSe/CdS and CdSe/ZnCdS core/shell quantum dots (QDs) with continuously tunable shell thickness. With the increasing shell thickness, the as‐obtained core/shell QDs show a narrow photoluminescence (PL) emission peak, near‐unity PL quantum yield, and obviously suppressed blinking behavior, which enables them to work as good emission layers in quantum dot light‐emitting diodes. A facile and reproducible method for scalable synthesis of high‐quality core/shell quantum dots (QDs) is a prerequisite to facilitate their versatile applications. Herein, a seed‐mediated heat‐up approach is developed for the preparation of high‐quality core/shell QDs with variable shell composition and continuously tunable shell thickness by selection of conventional salts as the precursors. The method is very simple and highly reproducible and, therefore, can be easily scaled up to get gram‐level product. The as‐obtained CdSe/CdS and CdSe/ZnCdS core/shell QDs exhibit intriguing optical properties, that is a narrow photoluminescence (PL) emission peak and near‐unity PL quantum yield. Importantly, the CdSe/ZnCdS core/shell QDs with a size of 11.4 nm exhibit obviously suppressed blinking behavior, and the fraction of nonblinking QDs (defined by an on‐time fraction ≥ 0.95) can reach as high as 96.0% on the measurement of more than 200 QDs. Moreover, quantum‐dot light‐emitting diodes (QLEDs) based on CdSe/ZnCdS core/shell QDs show a peak external quantum efficiency of 14.8% and low efficiency roll‐off at luminance ranging from 1000 to 25 000 cd·m−2. It is anticipated that the presented work will pave a novel way for the large‐scale production of high‐quality QDs and further boost their applications in light‐emitting diodes, lasing, and biological imaging.

Abstract:A novel two-step controlled basic water phase method has been developed for synthesizing size-tunable and water-soluble CdTe/Cd(OH)2 core/shell quantum dots with high quantum yield and good stability. The size of the prepared CdTe/Cd(OH)2 core/shell quantum dots can be easily manipulated by varying the concentrations of NaOH solution step by step. The maximal emission wavelengths of the series CdTe/Cd(OH)2 core/shell QDs were from 513nm to 610nm (emission colors tuned from green to red). The CdTe/Cd(OH)2 core/shell quantum dots not only possess high quantum yield (up to 83%) but also exhibit excellent photostability (being stable after being stored for more than 2 months). The CdTe/Cd(OH)2 core/shell quantum dots were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction spectrometry, ultraviolet–visible spectrometry and fluorescence spectrometry. The water-soluble nature of the CdTe/Cd(OH)2 core/shell quantum dots offers great potentiality for their chemical and biological applications. This method is easily controlled, low-cost and reproducible. So it is possible to extend this approach to the preparation of other size-tunable inorganic metal hydroxide capped core/shell quantum dots.

Abstract:Fabrication of semiconductor single and double quantum dot (QD) nanostructures is of utmost importance due to their promising applications in the study of advanced cavity quantum electrodynamics, quantum optics and solid-state spin qubits. We present results about the controllable growth of self-assembled single and double SiGe QD arrays with an ultra-low areal density of 1 × 10(7) cm(-2) on nanohole-patterned Si substrates via molecular beam epitaxy. The two dots in a double QD (DQD) aligned along the elongation direction of the nanoholes and show unsymmetrical features in both size and composition due to the asymmetric nanohole profiles after Si buffer layer growth. The interdot spacing between the two dots in a DQD could well be adjusted by changing the elongation ratio of nanoholes. Moreover, whether a single or a double QD formed in a given nanohole was found to be determined by the growth temperature of the Si buffer layer, the reason of which is given by the calculation of the surface chemical potential around the nanoholes after the buffer layer growth.
Controlled Synthesis and Characterization of Znse Quantum Dots

Abstract:Adopting improved metal-organic "Green method," Colloidal ZnSe quantum dots were synthesized by using cheap and low toxic zinc oxide (ZnO) in an organic solvent system of 1-hexadecylamine (HDA), lauric acid (LA) and tri-n-octylphosphine (TOP). The effects of HDA dosage, injection temperature, growth temperature and time on the microstructure and optical properties of ZnSe were studied by means of X-Ray diffraction(XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), spectrofluorometers and ultraviolet spectrophotometer, respectively. The results showed that ZnSe quantum dots with the best range of the size evolution were obtained under the condition of injection at 280 degrees C and growth at 240 degrees C by choosing the optimal parameters of ZnO:HDA:LA = 1:2.1:5.2 and TOPSe = 1 mol/L. Its size became larger and the emission peak shifted obviously to red with increasing the growth time. Meanwhile, the obtained ZnSe was of the wurtzite structure, had good uniformity and fluorescent characteristics.

Abstract:Lead selenide (PbSe) nanostructures with well-defined star-shaped morphology are successfully fabricated via a facile organometallic synthetic route from the reaction of tetraphenyl lead (Ph4Pb) with triphenylphosphine selenide (Ph3PSe) in dibenzylamine (DBA) with the assistance of oleic acid (OA) and oleylamine (OAm) at 220 °C for 30 min. The structure and shape of the nanocrystals are investigated by techniques of XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, SAED, and EDX, and it is interesting that the obtained PbSe nanostars present Pb-rich features, although the PbSe nanostars are still in typical rock salt phase. Experimental investigations and ATR-FTIR studies demonstrate that the media of DBA, OA, and OAm with an order OA > DAB > OAm play important roles in the growth of the PbSe nanostars with well-defined shapes because the media not only serve as solvents but capping materials. The synergetic effects of the media are also favorable for the growth of PbSe nanocrystals with the well-defined star-shaped morphologies in the current reaction system. Meanwhile, varied PbSe nanostructures with cubic, side-cut cubic, and octahedral shapes can be fabricated by regulating the relevant reaction conditions, and all of these nanostructures prepared in the procedures demonstrate Pb-rich features due to the selective capping effects of the media to the exposed Pb(II) ions. It is confirmed that the specific shape and geometry of the nanostructures can be tuned by controlling the exposed crystal surfaces and/or the corresponding compositions via the variation of reaction conditions in the media.
