Abstract:Bicarbonate-involved homogeneous Fenton-like degradation of dyes and chlorophenols by Co 2+ and Cu 2+ under neutral or alkaline conditions has attracted much attention. However, it has shown poor performance with Fe 2+ , and the mechanism of bicarbonate in the modified Fenton reaction is still unclear. In this study, the performance and mechanism of the H 2 O 2 -HCO 3 − system activated by Fe 2+ for degrading 2,4-DCP under near-neutral conditions were systematically investigated. Batch experiments showed that 2,4-DCP was completely degraded in 60 min under the optimal conditions of Fe 2+ : NaHCO 3 = 1:2.5, Fe 2+ = 8 mmol·L −1 , NaHCO 3 = 20 mmol·L −1 , and H 2 O 2 = 10 mmol·L −1 . The pH of the solution was slightly altered during the reaction, as NaHCO 3 acted as a buffer to maintain pH stability. The dechlorination of 2,4-DCP occurred mainly in the first 5 min, and the dissolved Fe concentration remained stable after 5 min, in agreement with the degradation kinetics of 2,4-DCP. Furthermore, 14 organic intermediates produced during the reaction were identified and two main degradation pathways were proposed. The degradation mechanism of 2,4-DCP involves dechlorination, ring opening, oxidation, and substitution, which are mainly attributed to hydroxyl radicals, followed by superoxide anion and singlet oxygen, as confirmed by quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments. Finally, the toxicity of most of the organic intermediates was significantly reduced based on the quantitative structure-activity correlation (QSAR) method. The successful application of PMC activated by Fe 2+ might provide a new strategy for expanding the adaptability of traditional Fenton treatment in alkaline wastewater.
